Where is the 70D?

We’re told today that the 70D has been pushed into April, we had hoped that an announcement would be coming next week.

DIGIC 6

DIGIC 6 will be introduced tonight in the SX280 HS as reported a few days ago. We’re told we can expect DIGIC 6 to make its first appearance in an EOS camera inside the EOS 70D.

18mp Sensors

Keep an eye on the SL1, as it has a brand new 18mp sensor on the inside. As present, we can’t confirm that it’s also in the T5i, though it would make sense. We’re told that the 70D will have the same sensor. This is from a new source.

Lenses

Nothing on the lens front, though we expect to see one announced with the EOS 70D.

The EF 00-400 f/4L IS 1.4x is becoming a running joke with folks at Canon, I don’t think any one really knows why it hasn’t been officially announced yet.

1Ds III

I would like to sell my 1Ds III to scrounge up some much needed cash (getting married... and that is expensive!!). eBay will not let me sell since my seller rating is too low apparently... and Amazon not getting any chance either.

Anyone can suggest how I could go about it? It is still a pretty good body from Canon and I do not want to let it gathering dust there in the closet...

Best sports lenses for Canon 7D

I plan on getting a 70-200 f/2.8 USM IS II lens for my 7D and I want to use it for capturing American football games in the fall. I think this lens can handle the games and the 70-200 lens has looked great on 7D videos on Youtube. I wonder though if I should invest in another lens too. Im still getting the 70-200 but I might want to take pics of the whole stadium and the surroundings. The high school stadiums in Texas can be wide open and there are some wonderful sunsets that can be even more spectacular when there is a partly cloudy sky. Palm trees in the Valley. Mountais in El Paso. Endless sky in The Plains of West Texas and lush trees in East Texas as well as the urban landscape of Dallas area games. Would it be wise to get a smaller lens--like a 24-70 or a set prime lens? Also, I hear these lenses are also great for video on a 7D.

Also, the 70-200 f/4 lens is signifigantly cheaper. I could be able to swing that lens in a month. Would it be wise to get it and use it for daytime settings and baseball games? Like I said, I'd still get the 2.8 but the 70-200 f/4 looks to be a good set of glass.

One more question. Anyone got any takes on the 28-300mm L f3.5-5.6 lens? I havent seen too many reviews or vids on it. Is this lens real good for sports?

Thanks for your feedback. Still learning the 7D but so far so good.

Who to approach (Canon/Reseller) for camera donation to NGO

Hi,

I'm currently volunteering for a local, community-oriented conservation NGO in southern Belize, C.A. The organization is funded on a project basis and has very limited funding for buying "fancy" camera equipment such as a DSLR. Do you guys think there is any chance that Canon would be interesting in donating a basic, lets say 650D with 24/2.8 and a macro, to our organization or are we better of trying to contact resellers directly? The camera will be used by our rangers to take pictures of plants they find the the nature reserve they manage and by our volunteer botanist.

Video direct to iOS?

When I try to transfer video recorded on my 5D Mark III directly to iOS (by dragging to the 'videos' section in iTunes), I get a message when I sync with my iPad that the video was not transferred because it is not in a compatible format.

I usually fix this by opening the video in QuickTime Player 7 and then exporting, being sure to save the audio format as AAC (instead of uncompressed PCM which is the default format from the camera). However, I'd love to be able to skip this step.

Is there a way to have the camera encode the audio in AAC format (or some other iOS compatible audio format) so that I can go straight from the memory card to the iPad? If not, is there some simple and convenient way to do this in software on the computer that doesn't require me to re-encode each video file?

I'm just curious what is the "experience" in terms of years that CR folks have been shooting professionally / seriously (for hobbyists).

Speaking for myself, a hobbyist who had a DSLR since 2009, I started shooting seriously only since December 2011 so I am in Option 1.

Review: San Francisco's Annual Professional Photography Review

The PhotoAlliance 'Our World' annual photography portfolio review was held this past weekend in San Francisco. It's a national juried portfolio review and some some 3,000-5,000 photographers apply to in hopes of getting their work seen by professionals, with around 50 accepted. I was lucky enough to be accepted and was pretty excited to attend.

grahamclarkphoto-82.jpg

The event took place on March 16th and 17th between 10:00AM - 5:50PM, with an opening talk on the Friday before. It was held at the San Francisco Art Institute, which overlooks the bay up near Pier 39. The cost of entry was $40, and around $700 if you're accepted. The way it works is an accepted photographer selects ten out of fifty reviewers. The photographer will meet with ten reviewers, but only five of the ten will be guaranteed.

Who were the photographers that were selected? What kind of work did they present and what were their impressions of the PhotoAlliance Portfolio Review? I took some time out of my Saturday and Sunday to connect with some of the photographers to get a sense for who I had the pleasure to show with, and what kind of work they were showing.

To see who some of the photographers were and what their work looked like, check this out: http//www.grahamclarkphoto.com/photoalliance-portfolio-review-2013/

Conclusions
For professional photographers looking to expand their horizons and network with other photographers and people in the art community, the PhotoAlliance 'Our World' Annual Portfolio Review held in San Francisco is a great event that could be really useful. It has a hyperlocal emphasis, so for those who live elsewhere in the country you might find the network effects a bit limiting.

[FILM] Which is "quicker" a SLR (AE-1, SRT-201) or Rangefinder (GSN, QL17)?

I'm going back to film because of my photo 101 class and I am using this as an excuse to add a new film camera to my collection. I'm looking at cameras that existed during the 1970s or older. I have one camera from the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. I'll wait 10 more years to get a camera from 2010s D:

Anyways, any one here have any experience using a film rangefinder other than a Leica? Something like a Canonent QL17 or the cult classic Yashica 35mm Electro GSN. I want to use one to get a feel of what a rangefinder has to offer. Another reason why I'm looking for a rangefinder is to have a small, unobtrusive film camera that I can put in my messenger bag. I like the idea of using a rangefinder as my camera of choice because 1. I don't have a risk of getting any real expensive equipment stolen 2. My friends won't think I'm a weirdo carrying a HUGE DSLR (or SLR)

Please, let me know if you have any opinions or if you want to side with my girlfriend and say I have too much camera gear.

-She will not get off my back for having a Point and Shoot under our pillows -.- YOU NEVER KNOW!

Question for owners of Canon 200mm f2.0 and 70-200mm f 2.8 II lens

I finally purchased the Canon 200mm f2.0. It's an amazing lens by itself and produces great photos. It's also huge and with the hood, takes up all the space in my backpack.

The 70-200mm is smaller, relatively cheap, more versatile and at 200mm f2.8, can get close to great results, but not quite the same caliber. Do you guys still manage to make use of both 70-200mm f2.8 II and the 200mm f2.0 regularly? What are your thoughts?

24-70 IS ii v 70-200 IS ii

Hi all. Im relatively new to the world of photography compared with what appears to be a plethora of experience here. I guess therefore i categorise myself as a hobbyist that merely dreams of being able to enter the realms of engaging in right brain work like this as a full time experience one day.

I currently own a 5D Mk3, 50 1.4, 24-70L 2.8. I shoot anything of visual interest - i cant really say what my preference is. My question is whether it is worth selling my 24-70 to upgrade to mk2 or whether i get the same bang for my buck with the extra reach of the 70-200. My inclination is to the latter - mainly because of the reach, although the weight has been mentioned as being prohibitive (particularly as a travel lens). But i struggle to understand how 860g versus 1500g can really come into the equation??

Your highly valued opinions would be much appreciated.

$2,800.00 budget

Hello CR friends.
Have you ever got the fever to buy a new car? Well I have the fever to buy a full frame camera. I'm not a professional, just a hobbyist. I currently own a T3i, with a kit lens, a Canon 50mm F1.4, Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II. I also have a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 that I'm selling. For the last 2 months I've read so many reviews, watched every video on YouTube, as well as many on vimeo.

If you had 2,800.00 to spend, what you do?
Canon 6d with kit lens or 5d MK III body only

I feel the 5d MK III would hold it value longer that the 6d.

Future of STM and USM

While there is a lot of chatter over the new Canon bodies, I'm kind of surprised there isn't much discussion of the new 18-55 STM lens.

Not this particular model, but the fact that Canon has introduced their third STM lens. From what I understand, STM is targeted to video (smoother focusing) while USM is best for still photos. Anyone disagree with that? Is STM the wave of the future or will we eventually see USM and STM models of all lenses?

40mm f/2.8 Wow what a lens

I was a little unsure about the 40mm f/2.8, but i wanted something small for travel and general use without sacrificing qualify. Reading all the MTF charts and positive reviews on this lens, i went ahead and bought it. My first impression after taking the first shot was WOW. I'm really impressed. It exceeded my expectations. This lens is extremely sharp, easy to handle, great Bokeh even though it's only 40mm. Focus may not be the fastest but it's pretty fast and will work great for most situations. Here are few portrait shots taken with this lens. It was a cloudy day, no other lights used. Shots were between f/2.8 and f/9 on a 5D Mark III. The only thing done is post was crop, vignetted few images for added effect, and adjusted white balance.

Gear upgrade: 2 primes vs new body + 1 prime??

Hi guys and girls. I plan to upgrade my gear and as it usually goes I have no idea what to do :) After this upgrade I think that I won't be buying anything for a very long time so I need some advice.
Currently I have 24-70 f2.8L, 70-200 f2.8L IS II, 5d mark II and 3x Speedlite 600EX RT. I will be doing some weddings this summer as a second photographer and this is main reason for upgrade.
I was thinking of this two options:

- EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM + EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM
I need something wide...24-70 is great but sometimes (not too often) just not wide enough.
85mm F1.2 well you all know what this thing can do. This would be really helpful in dark churches. Some places don't allow flashes and I don't want to be too intrusive during the ceremony. Also this would be great for portraits.
I also considered 50mm 1.2 but after reading some reviews it appears to be too soft for a lot of people.

- EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM + 5d markIII
I am thinking about new camera is mainly because of bad auto-focus on mk2. I had a lot of missed shots with it(mostly in low/bad light). Second reason is group mode support for Speedlite 600EX RT. I still have no clue why canon did not add this in the older camera models. And lastly better high ISO performance.

So what would you suggest?
PS besides the weddings sometimes I shoot concerts, astrophotography and lots of family pictures (usually kids running around).

PPS great site and forum :)

Thanks in advance.
