Clouds, my first serious time-lapse!

Hi guys, i'm new on this forum, and to introduce myself there's a time-lapse!

Clouds on Vimeo

The technique of time-lapse has always fascinated me a lot, and I decided to create my own, which shows the world where I was born and where I live, where I take refuge when I want to spend some relaxing time with these landscapes that have nothing to envy to any place on earth.

I tried to look with different eyes.
I tried to remember the most beautiful places I know, then I have searched for new ones.
I waited for the right day and the right time for each shot.
I spent more than 5 hours to take pictures manually, without the intervallometer.
I took 3205 pictures in RAW, for a total of 55Gb.
I spent over 20 hours on the computer to process RAW files and to assemble the video sequences.
I spent three days listening to hundreds of audio tracks to find the right one.

This is the result.

For photos I use a 5D Mark II mounted on a Manfrotto 055XB Aluminum Tripod with Manfrotto 701HDV video head with the following lenses:
Canon EF 17-40mm f / 4 L USM
Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM

Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG's odd behavior on 5D3

So two “Siggy” 85's freaked out my 5D3... Has anyone had a similar experience?

Should I be concerned that either Sigma damaged my 5D3 or do you think this is some fluke? Either way, I sent both Sigma’s back to B&H and Amazon respectively. Sad because the IQ from that lens was nice for the money.

It was working fine just through general shooting then I decided to order a second copy to have something to compare the first against along with a single copy of the Canon EF 85 f/1.8 USM and started testing (USAF 1951 resolving chart - mostly for element misalignment and also FoCal for focus and sharpness).

First thing that went wrong was FoCal would continuously crash regardless of which Sigma lens copy I used (I Google’d and a few others are experiencing this with FoCal + Sigma 85). It would require a full power down of the camera to get FoCal to work again without crashing. If I mounted the Canon 85 1.8 *without* powering down after a Sigma freaked it out, even the Canon would cause FoCal to crash.

Then it gets more interesting… USAF test shots – 10 second timer, manually de-focusing lens before each shot. Canon 85 1.8 – no problems, Sigma – if I manually de-focused TWICE *consecutively*, the 10 second timer "turned into" a 2-second timer (no joke) EVEN THOUGH the top LCD on my 5D3 showed it as still being in 10-second timer mode. Have you EVER seen this? So get this – even if I switched to one-shot drive mode and BACK to the 10-second timer it was STILL behaving like a 2-second timer! If I powered down and back up, all was well 10 second timer again. This was repeatable with BOTH Sigma copies without fail. The Canon 85 1.8 (if I restarted the camera before mounting it) worked 100% fine.

Needless to say, I personally may never purchase another Sigma again. Other posters in various forums have had FoCal crash and other odd experiences with Sigma lenses on Canon bodies. Forbid one of these lenses damaged the 5D3.

Trade 28-300 for 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8

I'm considering this trade. It's nice to have the 28-300 and carry just one lens vs the two but the others are much faster at 2.8. Most of my photography is of my kids so either low light concerts and plays or outdoor soccer, baseball and basketball. The 2.8 is better in low light but is the depth of field too shallow to use with movement such as soccer or plays so you end up shooting at a higher aperture? I have a 5d mark 3 so can always increase the iso. I love the effect of a 2.8 but is it practical to shoot sports wide open? Also would I miss the 200-300 range for soccer and basketball? I'm a novice so your advice would be great. Thanks

7d2 Video specification speculation

Pardon the pun in the title, it's Friday afternoon and I'm getting goofy.

Adding to my wish list of things that are unlikely to happen, along with AF-point-linked spot metering, I'm wondering what the chances are of seeing higher frame rate video in the 7d2. Obviously this is not based on anything more than line items on CR1 spec lists about "improved video", and there are lots of ways to improve video.

But, given that the 7d is geared towards sports shooters, might Canon include the ability to shoot 1080/60 (or better?) This would be a better spec than the 5d3 and 1dx, but the GoPro3 can do it, and that's a much smaller, cheaper little device. Plus, I want it to happen, and therefore I've convinced myself it's possible.

Do you use lens correction profiles when processing raw files or not with LR4

Lightroom 4. I have been using raws all the time now and I finally checked the lens correction button and I noticed my images getting brighter and stretched (undistorted?) I mainly shoot in clubs and some portraits. I honestly didn't noticed the pincushion effect but now that I know about it I am wondering if my images might be better in the long run if I correct them. I use a 24-70. I get slight pincushion on the long end. SOmeone help me thanks....

TS-E 45mm & TS-E 90mm Finally Getting Replaced? [CR1]

<p><strong>The L treatment</strong>
There are a few reports out there that Canon will finally replace the TS-E 45mm and TS-E 90mm in 2013. We should expect a replacement announcement in Q2 of 2013. Both of these lenses have long been rumoured to be on the replacement docket. No one has come out and said they’ll be “L” replacements, but I think it only makes sense. This would give Canon the largest high end tilt-shift lineup on the market.</p>
<p>Also mentioned in the same announcement breath, was Canon answer to Nikon’s 14-24 f/2.8. A very long awaited lens.</p>

<p><strong>Projector Pen</strong>

Canon sent this invitation out for the press event next week on March 22. Beyond the standard paper invitation, they sent a pen with “IXUS/PowerShot” on it. The pen doubles as a projector, and projects the invite information.<strong>

</strong></p>
<p>It’s interesting that EOS is not on the pen, unless the function of the pen is a hint about a new PowerShot.</p>

Own a 5D3 - need a backup...

Hi Everyone,

I presently own a 5D3. Have had the 5D3 for three months now and really love the camera. Wish I could own two 5D3's. I would get the 5D2 as a backup, but @ ~$1,200 used, it's just way more than I'm willing to spend after investing in lighting equipment. ~$700 is the absolute limit for me, even lower is better.

I am looking to get a better backup to the 5D3 than my 20D is (no contest) and I am considering a used 5D classic or used 50D. I realize they are completely different options with pros and cons to each, but here is my thought process. Please note that I am a prosumer turning professional and will be taking more and more family and couples portraits with a near-future goal to shoot weddings.

1. 5D will match the full frame of my 5D3 so it makes for a closer 1:1 backup in terms of FOV.

2. 5D appears it would have better high ISO performance. Likely better IQ and shallower DOF because of the FF and higher DLA for those narrow aperture landscapes as the size of the photo sites being larger. The 50D actually has a pretty low DLA of f/7.5 vs. the f/10.1 of the 5D3 and f/10.2 of my 20D.

3. A feature lacking in the 5D classic that I would very much be missing that I have in my 5D3 is AFMA. This is one huge benefit in my view of the 50D and on a tangent, where I believe the 60D falls short and hope to see a 70D with AFMA again. I want to be able to tweak my lenses myself (so long as they aren't way out of spec). I sent lenses in when they exceed +/-5 AFMA.

4. Would down-sizing/sampling a 15MP image out of 50D down to 12MP to match that of those images coming from the 5D overcome any higher ISO noise from the 50D (to a point - i.e. ISO 1600)?

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

Zoo Photos with 5D MIII

Hi Everyone -

Got to try a Canon 5D Mark III from CPS, to help my decision to buy it or the 6D. I have taken it to a zoo and took some pictures. Please check and share your comments. Hopefully it will help me to make up my mind and go for 5D MIII.

Did I get an expected result from Reikan FoCal?

All,
Please comment. I just bought a used 1DsMk3 and saw a consistent "back focus" -- that is, with a few different lenses images appeared to be focused on a point a little behind the intended point of focus... best I could remember, of course, where I asked for focus. Not 100% but a lot of images showed this.

I own Reikan FoCal and made some time today to test as the sun went toward setting (we rarely have low winds here...) and got through the following lenses: 24-70 v2 (at 70); 70-200 v2 (at 200); and the Sigma 35mm f1.4. The last test was asked to soldier on through what I know was too dim a light. Yes, I know it's best to do this with sunlight.

The results were all positive numbers like 4, 7, and 5, respectively.

So are positive numbers in FoCal consistent with my description/observation of back focus?

I do plan to redo this under better conditions. Hard to get all the factors -- including time -- together. I did like having the test run automatically, as my 5DMk3 has the annoying SDK failings that Reikan tells us are NOT in the 6D camera software.

Thoughts?

Iceland with my Mark III (feat. Orcas, Seals and Auroras)

Hello everybody!

I just finished my Video i shot in Iceland with my 5D Mark III

Iceland in the wintertime

The Videos were shot using several tripods and a Glidecam 4000pro. Some of the timelapses were shot with a StageZero Dolly from DynamicPerception.

Lenses in use
Canon 50mm F1.2
Canon 70mm-200mm F4
Samyang 14mm F2.8 (really really love that one)

I really enjoy that way of filming and would appreciate comments and critisisms. Some of the timelapses were flickering despite I tried to use long exposure times. Any suggestions?

Many greetings!

Is micro adjust setting stored in the camera or lens?

Is micro adjustment setting stored in the camera or lens?

I bought a 2nd hand Sigma 50mm 1.4, I really like the lens build, IQ and specially the bokeh. However it tends to front focus and is very noticeable at 1.4.

I was thinking of renting a 50D/7D/5D to micro adjust my sigma, then use it on my 60D.

I'm hoping someone with experience doing this could shed some light before I rent a camera.

Thanks!

How's the 70-300L?

I have a T1i, Sigma 17-50, Canon 100 2.0 and Canon 200 2.8 and am very spoiled by the image quality. Anything less would be a very large fail.
We're off for our big Alaskan trip and I'm undecided (for my telephoto needs) whether to just stick with the 200 2.8 and deal with the limitations (in exchange for the ridiculously great image quality), add a 300 f4 IS (which could potentially be a hassle) or get a 70-300L (which could serve many purposes to include outdoor sports and events).
Another option might be a 70-200 f4 IS or non-IS or one of the consumer grade 70-300's.
Any insight would be great.
Thanks.

I've recently acquired a Sony NEX-6 because I wanted to get a good (APS-C) compact system camera and Canon isn't quite there, yet. The last few years I've been pretty loyal to Canon, until now.

What other camera brand do you actively use, other than Canon? If you like, please specify which model and why.

5d3 Timelapse. Should i lock up the mirror?

Hi

I'm about to make a timelapse movie (dawn, dusk and stary night) next week, using a 5d mkIII. But im considered about the helth of the machine, dont want to waste mirror count.

So i was thinking about using mirror lock up function to save the mirror mechanism.
Does it worth it? Should i be considered about the sensor (continous lights) instead? Is there any dangers, disadvantages?

So im looking for someones experience in this field.

Thanks
