Any difference bw used and new 24-105mm lens?

Hi, I have a 24-105mm lens that I bought in 2008 used. Based on the serial code, it was made in 2007. I have been using it with my canon XSi for 5 years in the hope that I would eventually upgrade to full frame.

That day finally arrived and I just bought a 6d! Thing is, i bought the bundle so i have another 24-105 mm lens that is brand new.

I am going to sell one of them but should I keep the 2007 one or the 2013 one?

My old 2007 lens has no scratches and I don't think it has much dust. It does have quite a bit of zoom creep though, so that when I point it down, gravity pulls the front element down, zooming in. Is that cheap to fix?

I figure selling the new one on eBay will net me about $125 more compared to the old one.

Here are some other possible factors: Has there been any general improvement in Canon's manufacturing quality over time? Have they improved the coatings or glass elements but kept the same model number? Do the coatings degrade over time? Should mechanical wear and tear be a concern?

Thanks very much in advance!

replacing 7d with 5d3

I currently have a 5d mk2 and a 7d, with 16-35L, 24-105L, 100L macro and the 70-300L for glass. I keep the 7d on the 70-300L for the most part, and use the 5d2 for everything else. I mainly shoot landscapes, but some birds, wildlife etc. but no sports.

I sold my ef/s glass (10-22, 60 macro) and my plan was to stick with the above for a while.

I am thinking about replacing the 7d with a 5d3 since my current lens lineup has headed toward full frame; just wondering if that really makes any sense or not. I would like one body to have the more capable AF and speed that the 7d does for the birds etc, so replacing it with a 6d may or may not make any sense.

I love my 70-300L, but it is not teleconverter compatible (at least not Canon), and I am concerned about losing the reach it gives.

I am wondering how using a 5d3 with that lens and cropping in would compare with using it on the 7d in terms of IQ. Does the low light capability of the 5d3 more than make up?

I could also wait and see what the 7d2 does, but the real drive for this is to just have 2 full frame bodies since I (maybe too rashly) sold the ef/s glass.

Anybody have any thoughts or experiences?

Thanks!

Blue cast in shadows

I've noticed that something that supposed to be white actually has bluish cast in shadow.
For example I took a photo of a tree with white flowers and the flowers lit by sun look white. WB looks fine, however those flowers of a tree which ended up in a shade look somehow blue.
I would expect them to look more pale white, or something towards beige.

Is this a normal thing?

My explanation is that the shade has different temperature and that's why it is off.
How do you guys solve this issue if it happens to occur?

refurbished 5d III, what do you think?

what do you think about getting a refurbished 5D-3? Is it worth it?

Not sure what warranty it would have, but assuming a year - do you think it's worth the risk?

why are some cameras "refurbished"? something was broken when a customer received it? or was it merely a return to the store for no reason?

this is what I'm debating over:
http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_309850_

geez, i can't even call them to ask about warranty. need to be in the US to call. arghhh... i wonder if they'd accept a canadian CC to ship it to a US address....

Yongnuo vs. Godox battery pack comparison

Just received and tried a Yongnuo 8-AA pack. Attached to a 550EX this inexpensive ($45) pack is slower than my Godox 820, which is around $140 delivered where I live (many sellers will not ship such items to Hawaii). Not a scientific test. I used 8 freshly-charged PowerEx AAs right out of a Maha charger. The batteries inside the 550 were also just charged.

Cost difference mitigated somewhat by the necessity of buying eight rechargeable AAs to run the cheaper unit.

One benefit unrelated to speed is that longevity at an event, for instance attached to a balcony over your reception area shooting area. And Yongnuo repeats over and over the need to avoid rapid shooting of 20 or more exposures -- for the danger of overheating.

Perhaps others with both can add to this. I will try my 580 with the Yongnuo in a bit, and make a more quantitative comparison.

200-400 f/4 L IS vs 100-400 vII (hypothetical)

I max out at 200mm with the 70-200 f/2.8 II and have been holding out for a 100-400 II which will come eventually, probably in the not too distant future would be my guess. I can wait however so no major problem either way.

Now we know Canon is coming out with the 200-400, and while it will be horrifically expensive I could swing it. I'm looking to use a longer lens for wildlife photography.

So I've not used any of the L telephotos, any thoughts on these choices versus any of their other tele's from folks more experience than me? Consider issues such as weight, usability (short and long focal lengths), etc. Thanks for your thoughts!

Concert haze causing out of focus pictures

Another thread got me thinking about something and I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone else has experienced it. I was at a concert a few weeks ago and took quite a few pictures. This particular concert was running a lot of haze. I noticed afterwards that many of my pictures were ever so slightly out of focus (front focused). Does typical concert haze throw off autofocus?

Most of my pictures weren't too bad. It is really only noticeable when pixel-peeping, but a few pictures I took from the back of the room were off by about 40 feet. The total room length was probably about 200-250 ft, and shooting from the back, the camera would have to focus through the haze filled room to the stage at front.

Is this a common occurrence in haze-filled rooms, or do I need to take a closer look at the lens that I had the biggest issue with?

What was that link for DIY Calibration of your body/lens combo?

Hi all,

I think it was just last week, there was a post that had someone who had made a video showing how a new technique recently posted by different person for calibrating your lenses to your camera body...and for the life of me, I cannot remember the link (or, apparently the correct terminology for searching).

Can someone post a link to that thread, or just a link to the video again?

Thanks in advance,

Tried Canon 200-400f/4L IS today & asked the price, told it didn't exist :-)

I went to the 'Focus on Imaging' exhibition at the NEC Birmingham (UK) today, while there I waited to get access to the elevated Canon stand to view their larger lens. Once up there, I checked the available lens to try on the stand, and I asked the Canon rep if there was the Canon 200-400f/4L IS to look at, he disappeared and came out with the Canon 200-400 f/4L attached to a Canon 5DMK3 which looked lost on it :(

No photos could be taken on a media card, but could shoot away focusing with it and changing the focus distance between the 1 and 1.4 switch.

I was impressed, even got the other half to photo me :D

I then asked the damaging question, how much, he replied it didn't exist. About the same time another college asked him to remove it from the stand, it seemed it shouldn't have come out, so I was lucky. Well, it was certainly nice trying it and it was not as heavy as I thought it would be hand held.

Camera & Lens Focus Calibration

Hello

I am sorry if this topic has been mentioned in another thread previously but I'd wanted to confirm this from photographers that actually use and take pictures daily professionally and print them as fine art for the final product.

How important and off or spot on are the camera and lenses focus that you buy?

For example, a canon 5d mk 3 w/ 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II, 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.2, 24mm f/1.4

I am aware that there may be some difference depending on the lens and camera coming out straight from the factory
and may have some minor change during handling, etc

But my current boss insists that the camera and ALL the lenses must be focus calibrated to get that spot on autofocus.
And I have tried finding a store that would do that kind of pin focus service but haven't been quite successful.
Would CPS have that kind of service? or will there be another retailer that offers this ind of service?

I'm sure there are bound to be margin of error in spot on autofocus with different lenses due to various reasons but buying from B&H, Amazon, or Adorama, etc will have such problems?
Micro-adjustments seems to be general answer but I'd appreciate if someone would know of such service.

My boss gets his camera and lens focus service done in Korea but I'm currently trying to buy a 5d mk3 in NYC.
Since my need to purchase this camera is urgent I'd greatly appreciate for some helpful answers.

Thanks in advance to everyone.

Nikon to announce a new 80-400 VR lens this week?

Nikon Rumors is abuzz with the news of a new Nikkor AF-S 80-400 f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens ... could this prompt Canon to announce a new version of 100-400 L IS in the near future? ... personally I doubt that Canon would.

As posted at http://nikonrumors.com/2013/03/04/nikon-announcement-this-week-2.aspx/#ixzz2MbGnbQ1z
nikon press center Nikon announcement this week

A quick update: the March 14 date is the actual Nikkor AF-S 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR release date for Japan. I expect the shipping date for the two new Coolpix cameras also to be before the end of March. This means that the official announcement should be this week - probably on Wednesday or Thursday (for some reasons Nikon prefers to introduce new products in the middle of the week). The quick availability of the newly announced products makes sense - Nikon wants to sells as much as possible before the end of this quarter (March 31). This is also probably the reason why the Nikon D7100 will be available a week earlier (March 14th). The Nikon instant lens rebates were also extended till March 31st.

This lens has been long overdue for replacement - numerous patents were filed in the past and the lens had a designated internal number for years. My guess is that Nikon had this lens ready for a long time, but their current financial situation pushed them to release in now (together with the D7100 and the new DX compact camera) in order to meet their financial goals. The expected price is ¥275,000 (around $2,900, US price will be lower).

Birds of the Philippines

Philippine Duck (Anas luzonica) by alabang, on Flickr

Anas luzonica is endemic to the Philippines, being recorded from all the major islands and eight smaller islands. Records since 1980 derive from c.30 localities, most on Luzon and Mindanao. Records from Siquijor and the Sulus remain unsubstantiated. A steep population decline was evident by the mid-1970s, with high numbers recorded at only a few sites in the following decade, e.g. Candaba Marsh (Luzon) which probably supported many thousands in the early 1980s. Subsequent local extinctions and near-disappearances have occurred in several significant sites, including Candaba Marsh and Buguey wetlands (where several thousand were recorded in 1983). Important current areas include Polillo Island (240 seen and an estimated 3,000 present in 1996), Subic Bay (600 seen in 1997), Magat dam (2,000 were seen in 2001) and Malasi lakes (1,320 were recorded in 2002), Luzon. Other recent records come from Mangatarem, Pangasinan (east of Zambales Mountains IBA) where 70 individuals were counted on the Barabac River inside the Manleluag Spring National Park, Cantilan mangroves in Surigao del Sur and from a mangrove fishpond in Bicol Region, Southern Luzon (B. Tabaranza in litt. 2007). In 1993, its population was estimated at 10,000-100,000, but by 2002 fewer than 10,000 birds were thought to remain.

5d mark 2 long exposure processing time

Hi Guys
i am facing a problem when using my 5d mark 2 during night shots
I am shooting at 5 - 10 - 30 seconds and bulb and it is taking as much time for the picture to display on the screen/finish processing as the exposure time

example if i set the exposure to 30 seconds it takes another 30 seconds for photo to appear
and the buffer is going full and making me wait after couple of shots.
Imagine doing it on long exposures, 100 secs each.. i can only shoot couple of shots and it will make me wait to finish precess before i can even shoot another one.

is this normal ?
are you facing such problems, i tried with a friends 5dmark 2 and it is going much faster. even with a 200 seconds exposure the photo is appearing the second the shutter closes, and it is a big problem as i shoot night skies and scenery to wait that long for each photo...

What about a more versatile sensor dimensions?

Hello guys,

I was thinking after Canon announced this high-sensitivity 35 mm full-frame CMOS,
it would be great to have (not new to opinion) maybe a square sensor!

Well, for the video i think it would not be the best choice while it would get a lot of
sensor area out of use, and at the same time the 16:9 format will be a little small.

But i think while it would be The SENSOR for APS-H lovers, it would have some advantages:

Less vignetting, less distortion, less every artifacts, it will use the sweet spot of the lenses, resulting with sharper corner to corner image, maybe more noise but that should get better with the new technology.
That was all about quality, but that's not all. What about the versatility? = Best square Images, not having to turn the camera for portrait format.

But once again, i'ts maybe just a dream, and probably it will never happen mainly because of the video, and of course having another format it's just too much, too small compared to FF...

Learn me on the use of filters!

So, I pulled the trigger and got a used but good condition RB67 6x7cm MF film camera. Awesome! Shot this weekend with it, both B&W film (need to drop it off today) and the Fuji instant develop film. I got started thinking though, filters were a lot more useful with film, since a lot of what you can do digitally with RAW files (color levels, whitebalance, etc) you can't do with film. So, where's a good point to start learning about the different filters and how to use them with color and B&W film?

As a note, I decided to get the 3-volume Ansel Adams photo books. I'll probably mostly start with The Negative, but I will read through the other 2 as well.

Cheap underwater flash

Hi All
I own a Canon Ixus 960 IS with the fitting case WP-DC19. I search now for an inexpensive flash which I could use. One I saw is the Ikelite AF35 which might be useable.
It has to survive diving depths of 40 meters, should use rechargeable batteries and, most important, should work as a Slave which gets triggered by the built in flash.
Any recommendations?
Thanks

<strong>Press Release</strong>

TOKYO, March 4, 2013—Canon Inc. announced today that the company has successfully developed a high-sensitivity 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor exclusively for video recording. Delivering high-sensitivity, low-noise imaging performance, the new Canon 35 mm CMOS sensor*1 enables the capture of Full HD video even in exceptionally low-light environments.</p>
<p>The newly developed CMOS sensor features pixels measuring 19 microns square in size, which is more than 7.5-times the surface area of the pixels on the CMOS sensor incorporated in Canon’s top-of-the-line EOS-1D X and other digital SLR cameras. In addition, the sensor’s pixels and readout circuitry employ new technologies that reduce noise, which tends to increase as pixel size increases. Thanks to these technologies, the sensor facilitates the shooting of clearly visible video images even in dimly lit environments with as little as 0.03 lux of illumination, or approximately the brightness of a crescent moon—a level of brightness in which it is difficult for the naked eye to perceive objects. When recording video of astral bodies, while an electron-multiplying CCD,*2 which realizes approximately the same level of perception as the naked eye, can capture magnitude-6 stars, Canon’s newly developed CMOS sensor is capable of recording faint stars with a magnitude of 8.5 and above.*3</p>
<p>Using a prototype camera employing the newly developed sensor, Canon successfully captured a wide range of test video,*4 such as footage recorded in a room illuminated only by the light from burning incense sticks (approximately 0.05–0.01 lux) and video of the Geminid meteor shower. The company is looking to such future applications for the new sensor as astronomical and natural observation, support for medical research, and use in surveillance and security equipment. Through the further development of innovative CMOS sensors, Canon aims to expand the world of new imaging expression.</p>
<p>Canon Marketing Japan Inc. will be exhibiting a prototype camera that incorporates the newly developed 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor and sample footage captured with the camera at <a href="http://www.shopbiz.jp/en/ss/" target="_blank">SECURITY SHOW 2013</a>, which will be held from Tuesday, March 5, to Friday, March 8, at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center in Tokyo, Japan.</p>
<ul>
<li>An imaging element (aspect ratio: 16:9) that supports the largest image circle size possible when shooting with a Canon EF lens.</li>
<li>A CCD sensor with a readout mechanism that multiplies electrons after being converted from light. Applications include nighttime surveillance and the capture of astral bodies and nighttime nature scenes.</li>
<li>The brightness of a star decreases 2.5-times with each 1 magnitude increase.</li>
<li>Recording of test video footage was made possible through cooperation from ZERO Corporation.</li>

Phottix Strato Multi turn out not to work with Vivitar 285HV

Bummer. Bought a Strato Multi II to test expanding a set of Odin receivers intended for my Canon flashes into my existing batch of Vivitar 285HV units. I had hoped this lower-cost rcvr would fire the Vivitars for those interiors that needed "just one or two more flashes". I am posting to see if anyone here ever tried the Strato successfully with these Vivitar 285's. The Odin rcvr *will* fire the Vivitar. Vivitars offer no TTl feedback. There's just one metal connector in the shoe, and eyeballing that spacing it *does* line up with the Strato's center connector.

The Strato rcvr will not fire the Vivitars with the test button, or a pc cord run from the Vivitar into the 3.5mm receptor at the back of the unit.

This may mean I have to buy a few more Canon flashes. I like the lower cost of the Canon 550EX used, but I already had the Vivitars and hoped to use them mixed with my Canons for a little while.

I had also planned to have the Odin controller tell the Strato to fire a Norman studio pack. That pack needs a quick repair -- in a day or so -- before I can test it, but now I am not to so sure it will work.

your goto everyday lens and why?

I love to shoot wide, wait scratch that, Ultra Wide. It seems that my everyday walk around goto lens is the 17-40. it gives me the ultra wide I like when needed and it also covers the 24, 28, and 35mm focal lengths. Granted, it's only f4 but I have been using it on a 6d and have had no complaints. Maybe one day i'll upgrade to the 16-35.

What's your goto everyday lens?

How do I set button to use only center AF point?

Hello, I just upgraded from an Xsi to a 6D. Pretty excited, but I can't figure out how to focus as I did before.

I don't want to focus by half-pressing the shutter button. Instead, I want to use only the center AF focus point by pressing that button on the top-right of the body.

I have a feeling I have to modify the C.Fn II setting, but am not sure how.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

UV filters (any difference?)

So I bought a couple lens recently (17-40mm and 24-105) and want to get some UV filters for them.

Is there any real difference between various filters?

For instance, Hoya UV filters range from $30 to to $110. My gut reaction is that it is mostly marketing junk and the $30 one is fine. But would appreciate anyone with knowledge or thoughts to the contrary! Thanks.
