Brand spanking new

ETA: just realized this should be in the "gear" area. My bad! I'm a genius today. :)

Hello all! ;) Just nabbed the 135mm L f/2 for $696.96 off the Canon 20% off refurb sale. :) Talk about fast shipping! Ordered at midnight on Saturday night into Sunday morning and it was in my hands today.

Anyway, I also recently purchased the 85mm f/1.8 (as in, just in the past month).

For those of you who have both the 85 and the 135, what do you like about each of them, and do you find it redundant to have both? I am hoping that I will have uses for both lenses and figured I'm not going to be using the 135 indoors whereas the 85, I may be. I shoot primarily portrait photography. I just could not pass up the deal on the 135... and so far, I have loved my 85. It's well, Wisconsin here, so I'm counting down the days until spring so I can get out and shoot.

Ah, and shooting with a 5DMkII here. I am still figuring out this forum and how to edit signature and such. :)

looking for an >400mm third party lens

My Canon 300mm 2.8 II is heavily broken, a NACA 7. I used it with the 1.4 & 2.0 converter
Now I am looking for an new lens >400mm.

As I looked in the www, the Canon lenses are extraordinary expensive. Does anybody own an >400mm third party (Sigma, Tamron, Tokina,...) lens that is worth buying? I do not want to spend another 8000 € for this lens....

Bodies and cell towers?

Question to all our physics and engineering experts here: I found an interesting location that is at the top of a building with cell phone transmitters attached to it. I think they're for major US carriers in case the frequencies used make a difference.

The place has the usual warning signs a la "may exceed the usual blahblah". From a medical standpoint I'm certain that it's a no-issue. But what about camera gear? I guess I might not want to use wireless triggers there but anything else at risk?

Thanks

35mm 1.4

I am currently missing a large aperture lens. I am really looking for one for portraits And wedding/event environments. I looked at the sigma compared to the canon and it is way better based of the digital picture ISO 12800. Also there is the 35mm f2 is that looks pretty amazing but I first want to know if there is a huge difference between 1.4 And 2 at 35mm. If not that huge the is on the f2 would be amazing for video for me.
I have wanted a 50mm for a while but am just waiting because I would like to see a new one. The 50mm 1.2 and 1.4 is so close in quality but I would like to buy a sealed lens that isn't one I am going to want to upgrade Down the road.

Is a 35mm tight enough that the background stays blurred? Or would waiting for a upgraded 50 be better?

Canon 6D (Body Only) which lens to purchase?

Hey Canon family, I have little dilemma. I'm thinking of purchasing the Canon 6D (body only) but I just want peoples opinion who have owned the specific lenses that caught my attention. The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 & Canon 135mm f/2L. This is going to be my first DLSR and I've been doing extensive research before I bite the bullet coz I know that its going to be a good investment. I have a 7 months old son and I just want to document his growth as much as I can (portraits). My wife and I are also going to take him to my homeland (beautiful island of Philippines, I know My man Manny going KO'd bad! he's probably still sleeping, jk) (street photography, landscape, architechture). Anyways, any feedback from pros, amateurs, etc. on what lens YOU would purchase first if this your first camera would be much appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Google Glass

So I've been taking an interest in small sensor cameras - the Canon S100, my cellphones, the Memoto and Google Glass. Under the adage of "the best camera is the one you have with you" I've been working on these cameras to see how good I can get with them.

On Glass, I'm a software engineer by day and will be one of the first in the world to have a pair as part of the original "Glass Explorer" program, probably in the next month. I also was selected to take part of the "Glass Foundry" event where I got to spend a few days with it at the Google office.

I'm excited about using this new platform, and am interested to see what I can get with an "always there POV" camera

How lucky are you??

..yesterday, luck, location lighting and the fact that I had my camera with me all played a part in getting a few nice images. During the course of 12 minutes I made about 40 exposures and managed 2-4 keepers...I didnt plan this and if I wasn't lucky that the traffic was smooth flowing I wouldn't have had the time...More images and info on my lucky 12 minutes here at...http://thelazytravelphotographer.blogspot.com/

Canon 6D or 7DMKII?

There is a lot of speculation out there about the rumored 7DMKII. That being said, I'm currently in the market for a pro-sumer camera and these are basically my two options (6D vs. 7DII). I know, "Why are you debating on a camera that doesn't exist?" Well that's where I come to you guys for help. Should I sit and be patient for a new pro-level cropped body, or just go with the entry level FF? I know that the 7D is known for it's fast AF points, but also not too fond of high ISO's. Then there's the 6D with a basic AF system, but very nice performance in high ISO's.

Shooting with a 60D, I mostly photograph cars, and some other small macro photography. Not much landscaping unless necessary.

Canon Primes FOV compared by Canon Reps

Came across this interesting short video, persumably by Canon personnel.

It compares some common canon primes, L and non-L, with the subject staying still and the video appears not to have received too many hits, so I wanted to share for those who may have missed it.

It is charming if you are a jaded, cynical old hand and highly informative for the newbies who don't have a feel for what it looks like through the view finder with various lenses in one go. Ah..hem, I found it charming :P

In passing, I notice he stays at ~near minimum focusing distance for 85 f/1.8, 85L, and 135L generating interesting FOV comparison:

Yosemite in the wintertime

I just came back from Yosemite. I have to admit that February is now my favorite month to visit that region. The valley floor is still a bit busy, but the hiking trails are pretty quiet. I was not able to see the Horsetail Fall's Fire Fall due to it being cloudy when I went to watch it. There were well over a hundred photographers there waiting to catch a shot though! Anyhow if you have the option too, I would highly recommend staying a weekend in Yosemite during the month of February. Just don't wear tennis shoes!!!

I did notice that about 80% of photographers were walking around with a 70-200 F2.8 (canon/nikon/tamron/etc.). For the life of me, I could not figure this out! For my entire trip, I was constantly reaching for my 14mm uwa lens. If that was not on the camera, the 50mm was. I only put my 70-200mm on my camera 3 times over the course of the trip.

I do understand wanting that focal range for the waterfalls when observing from a distance, but these lenses were everywhere. Does anyone know why everyone in Yosemite has that lens attached to their camera 24/7???

Anyhow, here are a couple pictures from the trip. Hope you like them!
Also, feel free to critique the photos. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Tripod recommendations? Gitzo 1 or 2? Ball head ?

Hi!

I need to get a tripod for 5d mk III. I will be using 24-70mm II most of the time, outdoor.

I did my research and it seems like Gitzo is mostly recommended.

With my gear, will it be safe to get Gitzo 1 series? or just go with 2 series for safety?
(I prefer a lighter tripod but wasn't sure if 1 series is sturdy enough?)

And any recommendations for a ball head?
With Gitzo 1542T, it seems like Markins Q3T is a good combo, but does that work well with Gitzo 2 series too?

And if anybody can recommend a LESS PRICEY ball head with as good quality, I would really appreciate it!

** if available, can you please post links to the products too?

Thank you!

6D Live View Change White Balance

Hi! I just opened my Canon 6D! Woot woot!

Anyways, I have been using the 5D Mark II and I usually mess with the white balance/Kelvin while in Live View. So I can actually see the color and temperature change. I can't figure out how to do this on the 6D. I can do it in the menu, but not in Live View.

Does anyone know if this is possible and if so, how?

Thanks!

5D Mark III - Sensor Cleaning - Clean Now

Could you 5D Mark III owners test or confirm something for me please?

I've had the 'Automatic Cleaning' option enabled in the Sensor Cleaning menu since new (seeing as it's enabled by default). This performs as i'd expect like my 40D. If you put your ear right up to the body you can hear a tiny couple of electronic sounds. I believe this to be perfectly normal.

However I've just run the 'Clean Now' option in the Sensor Cleaning menu on my 5D Mark III for the first time.
And I expected it to just do the same as the Automatic Cleaning that runs when you switch on and off, but instead it made a few very audible noises. More like a motor sound which repeated a couple of times.
Is this normal? Can I get you users to check it on yours to see if it's the same? Remember I'm specifically talking about the 'Clean Now' option in the Sensor Cleaning menu.

Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 ZE Planar

Hi,

The Zeiss 85mm has been playing on my mind for quite a while now. The basic reason why I didn't but it till date was because it was too fussed about the manual focus but now with the 6D, I'm contemplating buying this lens and changing the 6D's focusing screen to aid in manual focus.

I just have two questions here -

1) How difficult with the manual focusing be after changing the focusing screen? (I've never changed a focusing screen of any of my cameras so am wary of the performance)
2) How does it compare to the Canon's offerings?

Thanks ... J.R.

7DII and D400 Specs

There is an interesting letter over on DPReview http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3387936#forum-post-50901841 that purports to be from Nikon Europe that unequivocally states that the D7100 will not be Nikon's flagship APS-C format camera.

On paper, the D7100 is impressive. If Canon responds with something close in the 70D, it makes me wonder what they'll put in the 7DII. I'm not sure the current rumored spec list for the 7DII would be sufficient to justify an $800 difference in cost.

On the other hand, I keep wondering if the 70D and 7DII will share the same sensors (Or for that matter, if the D7100 and D400 will as well). There is a part of me that thinks Canon may differentiate the two by offering slightly fewer megapixels but better low-light performance in the 7D, as they have done with the ID-X.

Hard to say. I just thought the letter was interesting and worth starting a thread for people to consider what it might mean for the 70D and 7DII.

7D "error code 20

Has anyone experienced the "err 20" on their 7D,, or other Canon DSLR?
A friend got the error several times on his 7D, and is sending it in to Canon
to see if they will repair it. The camera is not under warranty, and his fear is that
he will end up with a $1,600.00 door stop
As I understand it, the error code indicates a mechanical malfunction on the mirror?

<p><strong>Patent for wide angle fluorite concepts

</strong>Canon has filed patent for a wide angle fluorite concept. Such a patent could be part of a new ultra-wide zoom lens, perhaps a 14-24 or a replacement to the 16-35. Egami also thinks it’s possible this patent could be for the EF-M mount. It’s an interesting read, even when Google translated. Lens purchase strategy

Hello all,

I imagine many of us are having a kind of strategy to purchase lenses that cover our needs for the shooting style we have. My approach was to get f/4 zooms (back problems) and combine them with fast primes for low light and better sharpness (even though latest f/2.8 zooms seem to nullify the latter) when needed. Then, probably some of us are basically going for more of a lens to lens evaluation for the purchases, considering + & - of getting in in addition to or replacing one or more lenses in the current lineup.

What is your approach and why?

Cheers!

2 flash setup advice

Hi

I've been dabbling in a 2 flash setup using pixel king flash triggers a canon 580 ex ii and 430ex ii.

My question is when I set it to 1 group ettl. Wil both flashes fire equal power even though the 580 is more powerful?

Similarly when using ratios, do I have to adjust my ratio myself to account for the 580 being stronger?

Many thanks.

What am I doing wrong???

I get good pictures. But my percentage of unsharp ones is horrific. With all lenses.

I like shooting wide open, and I'm shooting active toddlers, so I know it's not easy. But still, I have 5D mark III, I am aware of shallow DOF, I am aware of field curvature, I am aware that shooting 1.8 on 1.4 lens may lead to focus issue (can't remember the term). Still, I don't get what am I doing wrong? Are kids that quick that 1/160 is so often smudged? I tried 1/500 and it did help some, but not completely. Do I shake the camera when firing? Any ideas?

Few example, 2 bad ones and one ok (all 1/160 50 [email protected]). Third shot is ok and is fired the same second when second shot (bad one) was fired... Quite often, it seems to me like there is nothing in focus, so I started thinking I'm shaking the camera, but when 1/500 didn't solve it, I got lost...

Help...
