Help me decide... PLEASE

Hey guys,

Im Alex and I have a problem... Joking aside I do have a serious problem, I have been bitten by the Prime lens bug and now I'm after getting a new prime...

I already own the 400mm 2.8 mkii IS and I have seen some of the images out of the 500mm and 600mm and this is where my problem starts... I do a lot of surf photography and birds of prey so both are perfectly suited to my needs... If I do decide to get a new prime I have told myself that this will be the final lens I buy ( told myself that 5 L lens ago )

Which one do you guy think I should be looking at more seriously?

Cheers

Super Tele Zoom Lens substitute for a spotting scope?

I am hoping that someone here may be able to give me some insight. I am an amateur photographer and avid long range firearm enthusiast. I need a spotting scope to see pencil diameter sized holes in paper targets at 300yds. To accomplish this with a spotting scope I am looking at minimum $1300 with my employee discount. I would much rather sink that money into a prime lens or converter and get dual purpose usage from my investment. I tested a 100-400 Canon prime at max zoom on a 7d body today in full sunlight and it was just capable of accomplishing this at 100, maybe 150yds in better conditions since there was a lot of mirage in the 90 degree heat on the beach where I tested. Does anyone who has had experience with Canon lenses above 500mm converted or not have a guess at which mm I may be able to do this? I was hoping that I could get a 2x for the 100-400, but I am not optimistic that this will get me past 200yds. Maybe a 500mm with the 2x?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

St-E3 + 600ex-rt + 430EXii

Does anyone know if its possible to trigger a 600Ex-rt via an ST-E3 and at the same time have the 600ex-rt trigger the 430exii.

From what I can see and I hope I am wrong the 600 works in either radio or optical modes and cant trigger a 430exii when its triggered itself by radio from the st-e3. I've triggered the 430exii from the 600 while its on camera, which is obviously straight forward enough however I was hoping that in order to avoid buying another 600 I could use the 430exii as a cost effective double flash set up if I ever need it.

Any suggestions or confirmation of my thoughts welcomed.

Cheers.

Exposing to the left?

Hello all.
I find that both my 1dx and 5d3 expose a bit to the left and not to the right (recommended by many).
Am I mistaken or any of you also noticing this? 1dx does this bit more than 5d3.
I work in aperture priority.
Should I dial in slight over exposure in the compensation menu or leave it as is and boost in PS?
Thank you.
Sanjay
PS-I am spending next ten days in Masai Mara and will go to lengths to find internet to see your helpful comments. So please respond at your earliest! :)

6D as a Compliment to 5DMkiii

There has been a sort of love hate reaction toward the 6D. I feel that the 6D is the perfect complimentary camera to the 5Dmkiii. Many pro photographers need a second camera, and I believe the 6D is perfect if you use the 5Dm3 as your primary camera. Almost every feature is complimentary. The 5D lacks the fancy connectivity/gps capabilities not to mention the remote EOS software for your phone, the low light focusing ability. The 6D lacks superior focusing, video ability and a few others. All while maintaining similar IQ. I have not heard this discussed. If you own both, you have almost all you bases covered with duplication of the most important qualities. If only the 6D could be had for 1500$ or less - maybe in a few months, the ebay offers will appear.

50mm 1.2 / 85mm 1.2 VS Zeiss 50mm1.4 / Zeiss 85mm 1.4? Which should I buy...

Hi everyone,

New user here in need of some expert opinions before I spend BIG on primes....

I'm looking to purchase a very wide aperture lens...my current widest lens is the 100mm 2.8 IS L Macro lens.

I want something that will be great for ultimate bokeh and street photography. I had a look at all these lenses today but cant decide which one is best without really getting to use any...I cant rent where I am either.

The Canon 85mm 1.2 is nuts...but the Zeiss lenses, especially the 85mm 1.4 is just beautiful. I have never had a manual only lens so Im worried I wont be happy using it.

Can anyone fill me in? I'm looking for the sharpest lens with the best most bokeh...is there a difference between the 50mm 1.2L and the 85mm 1.2L?

Thanks for your help everyone.

1D X Serial Number with New Firmware

Does anyone know if it is possible to tell which firmware a 1D X has on it simply from the serial number?

Am about to get one, but would prefer one that has all the latest firmware on it so I do not have to do that, until they release the new firmware in May. The shop I am buying it from says it has just come from Canon so one would expect it to have the latest but still, I thought it may be worth asking here.

Is it possible to tell from the serial number?

Thank you.

5D3 candle light High ISO (102400)

5D3 candle light shot at ISO H2 (102400)

Set up: Shot with 35L. Zero lights in any of the rooms with only the candle seen. Aperture priority f/1.4 generates shutter speed 1/1000 sec. House cat is mostly dark grey and you can see her under normal lighting in another post:
http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=314.msg226144#msg226144

LR4 and export: Everything that had a sliding dial on LR4, I set to zero (first pic and crop). No sharpening, no NR etc… WB was ‘as shot’. LR4, by default, wanted to set NR “color” slider to 25 which clearly cleans up the picture a bit even if everything else is still at zero (second pic and crop). I am not a post-processing officianado, so be gentle.

I realize I can get a much cleaner picture by using a sensible ISO and slower shutter speed, but I just wanted to play with the extended ISO a bit. Coming from film, not so many years ago, getting a relatively discernible image at such low light and high shutter speeds would not even be thinkable for me. I do see the banding up top and the general ugly noise, but either today’s sensors are wonderful or I am one of those saps who is too easily pleased. Cheers! :)

Edit: Just uploaded the original CR2 Raws to skydrive, hope this works:

An extra shot that is slightly more exposed at 1/800 sec taken moments apart with the same setup as the primary:

Compact Camera suggestions?

Hi again,

I have a friend that is a personal trainer and is in need of a new camera. He wants to be able to take action shots of himself in his gym, as well as have capability of taking video if possible for marketing purposes. He has a budget of $400. The priority is taking action shots, not so much the video. Again, I don't know much about P&S cameras, so I was hoping to get suggestions. I'm assuming he'll need a good aperture and ISO performance, and a decent MP count (12ish).

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Landscape prime

Hi,

Currently shoot my landscapes with the 24-105mmL and looking to upgrade to a decent prime. Had my eye on the 24mmL II for awhile. Any landscape shooters have a good experience with this lens?

Anything else I should consider? If I'm gonna spend this much money, I want to make a good decision. Not really interested in tilt/shift or something with a protruding front element.

Thanks!

25mm EF Pancake

I have no empirical proof but I believe the 40mm pancake is a bit of a success for Canon. I certainly hear very few detractors on CR and it’s definitely on my list.
Do you think there is any chance they will make a 25mm pancake to go along with it? using the same shell as the 40 would it take much lens design?

Buyers held hostage - CameraMator App pulled from App Store

I just received this email from "Planet5D"

ATTENTION: The following information may concern you because you may have previously pledged to receive a CameraMator Kickstarter project reward

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sanho Sues Former Software Developer Partner Wooblue And Wooblue’s CEO Usman Rashid For Unlawful Removal Of CameraMator App From Apple AppStore And For Fraud And Breach Of Contract

FREMONT, CALIFORNIA (February 20, 2013) – Sanho Corporation (“Sanho”) – a leading designer and developer of electronics and electronics accessories – sued Wooblue, Inc. (“Wooblue”) and Wooblue’s CEO, Usman Rashid, for fraud, breach of contract, unfair business practices and other claims in a complaint filed today in Alameda County Superior Court.

“Sanho had no choice but to protect itself and Sanho’s customers after Wooblue and Rashid deliberately and wrongfully disabled the thousands of CameraMator products already in the hands of Sanho’s distributors and customers,” said Sanho President, Daniel Chin. No trial date has yet been set for Sanho’s complaint.

Wooblue and Rashid breached the parties’ development agreement for the CameraMator product and application, which is used with Sanho’s revolutionary Compact Universal Wireless Adapter, (“CUWA”). Sanho’s patent-pending CUWA technology allows a device with a universal serial bus (USB) port (such as a computer, camera, or music player) to communicate wirelessly with other devices, such as a mobile phone or tablet computer. Sanho’s claims arose after Wooblue and Rashid unlawfully removed the CameraMator application from the Apple AppStore and other similar markets. Sanho’s complaint alleges that Wooblue and Rashid took that action knowing that it would harm Sanho’s relationships with its customers and distributors.

After Sanho announced its CUWA technology and made application kits available for developers, Rashid approached Sanho and sought to partner on the development and sale of the CameraMator product and application. According to Sanho’s complaint, after sales of the CameraMator took off following its debut at the most recent CES and Macworld trade shows, Wooblue and Rashid tried to extort more favorable business terms from Sanho by holding Sanho’s customers hostage and taking down the CameraMator application rendering any unsold CameraMator products unusable. Further, by taking down the application, any owners of CameraMator products who did not download the application prior to Wooblue and Rashid removing the application from the AppStore will not be able to use the CameraMator product that they purchased.

Details of the Sanho vs Wooblue/Usman Rashid lawsuit can be found at: http://www.hyperblog.com/2013/02/sanho-sues-wooblue-for-pulling-of-cameramator-app/

Bummer

Now that’s a real bummer isn’t it? While

If you read the court documents, you’ll see that the makers of CameraMator (Sanho) have spent over $185,000 marketing this device only to have the app yanked off the App Store shelves! Yikes!

The disagreement (according to paragraphs 30-34) is due to the software developer of the App “becoming greedy” and wanting to re-negotiate their deal – and when they didn’t get a new deal, they pulled the application from the App Store knowing it would totally kill all sales.

Its official now. The new EF 100-400 from Canon is on its way! *** FAKE ****

This is irrefutable.

Why?

Cos I finally gave in and bought a new 100-400 today. I had tried one that belongs to a
colleague, and wasn't too happy with it. But my new copy works pretty well.
Pretty poor light here today but still happy with the results at ISO4000+ on my
5D MK3.

Shot at about 4 meters away in sub-zero temps (making me shiver), no noise reduction
EF100-400 IS at 400mm F5.6 1/1500s ISO 6400 .

Cheers Brian
