Camera Help 7dii 5d3 or 6d

I need help with making a educated decision on my next camera. I currently have a canon T2i and use it for taking pictures of my daughters all star cheerleading team. These events are inside and the action is fast in usually dark arenas. I recently bought L 70-200 2.8 IS II. This lens takes outstanding pics on my beginner camera. I am looking no to upgrading camera and have been waiting on the 7dii. Should I wait or on this camera to maybe released some day or look into another camera.

Input on Lens Decision

Since I upgraded to FF I'm not shooting much at longer focal lengths and rarely use my 300L or 1.4 teleconverter. I shoot some portaits, macro and am doing more landscapes. Here's my current equipment list:

5DII
24-105L
50 1.4
70-200 f4L IS
100L
135L
300 f4L
1.4X III Extender

I'm considering selling the 70-200L, 300L and 1.4 extender to buy a 70-300L. This would allow coverage of longer focal lengths with less equipment. I don't think I'd miss the constant f4 and I rarely shoot over 300mm. I'd have some money left over to possibly put towards a UWA, since I am shooting more landscapes.

Appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks,

Craig

Canon 1DX vs 5DIII Wildlife Comparison

I just completed my two week eval of the Canon 1DX shooting wildlife exclusively. I shoot regularly with a 5DIII and was curious to see what the 1DX might offer over the 5DIII. I paired it up with a 600 f/4 and shot with and without a 1.4X III converter. I tried the 2XIII but at AFMA -20 it was still not focusing...tried a few manual focus shots and LV but gave up. I spent the first few days getting the 600 and 600+1.4x focus adjusted using AFMA. Tried the dot method and Focal and just gave up and did it by hand shooting ducks on a lake. All of my testing was done in RAW mode and images were compared/processed using PS CS5.

Here are my comments after using the 1DX for two weeks shooting various waterfowl and bald eagles:

• 12 fps does not really offer much. Sounds nice in theory but for wildlife I think it’s excessive. 6 to 8 gives you enough to work with.
• 1DX shutter is LOUD!!!! So loud that it scares away anything in earshot. The 5DIII even in high speed drive mode is much much quieter. Drop the 5D3 into silent mode and ducks within 20ft still cant hear it.
• Shooting up to ISO 1000 I did not see any improvement in noise levels. I’m sure it’s better but not enough to notice in real world situations.
• 1DX is 18MP full frame. Compared to my 5DIII at 22MP full frame, I believe the noise patterns on the 5D3 are actually smaller and less noticeable. Probobly due to the slightly higher pixel density.
• I did not see any improvement in image sharpness
• I did not see any improvement in dynamic range…though I’m sure it’s better…just cant see it in real world wildlife use.
• The thing soaks battery like no tomorrow. Had to charge the battery at 50% after two shoots. Compared to two weeks with the 5DIII and dual batteries in the grip. 1DX you can only have one battery at a time.
• Some of the added firmware features are nice and there are more programmable buttons but I didn’t find them useful or necessary over what I already have on the 5DIII. None of the extra features on the 1DX offered anything useful for wildlife photography over the 5DIII.
• 1DX costs twice as much.

The 1DX is clearly geared up for action sports photography and is a bit more rugged and water sealed than the 5DIII. As much as I wanted to qualify it as a BETTER wildlife camera, I just could not. Pixel peepers will have their say but for those of us that live in the real world, the 5DIII is just as good as the 1DX and due to the higher pixel density I would put it slightly ahead of the 1DX for this kind of work.

These comments are based on my opinion shooting wildlife for 30 years. Others will have their opinions and I welcome them for the sake of open discussion.

Wild dogs at impala kill at savuti in Botswana

We left camp in the twilight to travel along the west bank of the flowing Savuti river to Motsipi island in Savuti National Park. As we turned a bend we found the wild dogs devouring an impala kill. every now and then they would stop & scan their surroundings.

Cheapest way

I really want to go full frame by the end of June as I am the photographer for a wedding at the end of that month, but I am on a very tight budget. I would like to buy the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and the 24-105mm lens; I live in the UK and would like to know the best way/places of getting this camera and lens at the cheapest price possible. Yes I understand this may mean not getting this equipment new.

Thanks very much! :)

Better Dynamic Range in a Camera

I own a Canon 5D Mark III which is a great camera. I still have my 500D which is still a very good camera which I still enjoy using. The 5D has better ISO and Focusing and lots more buttons. It has a bigger sensor which does help improve image quality and does nice things with depth of field. The ISO improvement is really great.
One thing that maybe is better (but not obviously better) is the dynamic range of the sensor.
I can't see a whole lot of improvement over a 500D (I may not be looking properly).
What would be a great leap forward would be a sensor that captures the light in a scene with all it's ranges like an eye would.
I've seen in places that some people think the human eye has a dynamic range of around 20 stops other saying 6.5.
I've also seen it said that the dynamic range of a camera (9-11) exceeds the dynamic range of print (6.5 stops).

I am not a techical expert in this area and I know the eye is quite a complex mechanism and the brain also tinkers with an image but:
When I look at a scene with alot of different light I can take it all in and I see a picture in my mind.
When I take a photograph of it certain areas are lighter or darker than I saw.
I then have to edit my image to something approximately to what I saw (or thought I saw).

How hard is it to make a sensor with a higher dynamic range?
Can it be translated into something you see straight off on a screen or a print?

I'm sure a company that could produce a camera that produces images more like how a human sees the scene as would really be onto a big winner.
What would it take to do that?
Is it better dynamic range ability or is it something else that's required?

Kind Regards

Smartphone Photos - iPhone / Droids / Nokia / others

Hi,

People go on and on how they can get amazing photos with their iPhones. I've seen posts on this forum that people have given up their P&S in favour of the iPhone.

I checked up this section of the forum and didn't see any iPhone image gallery.

Please post your best iPhone images here.

I always carry a P&S with me so I don't click many images from my iPhone. However, I checked and there were a few images which I clicked with it - posted below, not very good perhaps but I'm not too sure what to expect from this "camera" which is used by me only in SOS situations.

Cheers ... J.R.

PS: I edited this post and changed to title to include all smartphones ... on popular demand of course! The the smartphone image battle begin ;D

Recommendations for Selling Expensive Telephoto

I'm considering selling my Canon 400mm DO lens. I have sold a few lenses on Craigslist in the past but never anything as expensive as the DO.

We looked at a online quote from B&H but their price seemed really low $3100 for perfect condition.

Has anyone else sold a large telephoto? If so, how did you price it (since there are so few for sale) and what method did you use?

Appreciate any suggestions.

Help Me Build My Lens Stable!

So I'm making the switch to full frame, not all at once, but over the course of this year. I could use some feedback on my choices and the order I should be purchasing to maximize utility and versatility. I currently have a 60D, 10-22, 50 1.8 II, and 70-200 f/4 IS, and 430EX II.

I shoot a lot of portraits. I quite enjoy shooting wildlife and do so on several trips a year (though I am inclined to rent for that as needed). I enjoy landscape as well and while I consider it a priority, I don't know if I do so enough to warrant the 24 TS. I've also been working on starscapes and such. I travel quite a bit and take a fair bit of street stuff as well as finding myself in dim churches, museums, etc meaning I'd like some fast glass. Also macro. Lastly, while I haven't shot a wedding, I have done some events and performances and would like to make that a larger part of my shooting. I also may be gearing toward work as a PJ at some point soon.

What I'm looking at...

(sell 60D, 10-22, 70-200, keep 50 b/c why the hell not?)

5D III (toying with the 1D IV for build and speed but perhaps as a second body next year?)

16-35 II (traveling, street, some landscape, group or environmental portraits even)
70-200 2.8 IS II (everything...weddings, events, portrait, some closer wildlife)
135L (covers my portraits, some street stuff, events/stage stuff)
24 1.4L (not as good as the TS but it's more versatile. churches, markets, lowlight, astro)
100 Macro (L or not? IS can come in handy and its only a $240 difference, weather sealing is a selling point)
50 1.4 (better bokeh than the 1.8, which I'd keep as backup or lightweight setup)

MAYBE a 600-RT but that likely comes last.

So...help me out. What would you change given my shooting tastes? Does the order of acquisition matter? I considered the 50L but I figured I'd have low light covered well and the difference in price nets me the L macro at a minimum.

Thanks in advance for all the help! If you want some degree of feel for what I shoot, visit www.rfaganphotography.com.

New Member to my Canon Family

Greetings everyone!

I picked up a near mint condition Canon AE-1 Program for $100 a couple of days ago. Also started developing my own black and white, I'll post up my results later once I get a decent scanner. For now, I want to show off my new member.

Came with:

24mm f/2.8
50mm f/1.4
50mm f/1.8
80-200mm F/4
188A Flash and Charger
Manual and Case

A real steal I think, if I pick up an OM-D I may grab an adapter as well. I wish Canon would produce a body similar to this, it's everything I want in a digital camera. This was shot with the 50mm F/1.8 II and EOS 1000D.

P.S. Does anyone know if the 188A would work on my Rebel?

70-200mm F4 IS vs 70-200mm F2.8 non-IS (70-200mm F2.8 IS ver. 1?!)

Hi guys,
Currently, I only have a 50mm 1.4 and 24-105mm L on a 60D, and its all fine for my shooting, but when I help others photograph events, I found it a bit short.
Usually, I'll photography assemblies/stage presentations for people, and the 70-200 would come into great use.
So, I have around $850-$1000 USD to spend on a 2nd hand 70-200mm... It'll take me sometime to save up to around this range, but, I wanna have a goal ahaha. :)

So, here's the question, should I spend $900 on a used 70-200mm F4 IS... OR around the same price for a used 2.8 non-IS? Or... Spend an extra $170 or so on a used2.8 IS ver.1?

Usually, I'd be shooting at ISO 800, F4 and at 1/50th of a second on my 24-105, which i know, is way too slow of a shutter speed to shoot a 70-200.

Also, in terms of sharpness, would they all be similar to each other, and perhaps on par with my 24-105mm?
I also want a good amount of shallow DOF, well, having the option wont hurt would it? But is F4 on a crop going to provide enough shallow DOF? F4 vs 2.8, is the DOF really noticeable to the average person, a mere person who knows nothing about photography?

IS better suited for my situation or 2.8s the way to go? I prefer not to spend that much as I don't get paid often, so 70-200mm 2.8 IS ver.1 isnt my preferred route...

5D Black AF points...NOTHING + Spot-meter?

Hello,

What do you guys thing,
Will Canon arrange this or not? if yes, when?
The next firmware that is about to be released in April, apparently will not include this!!!!

And... i cannot really realize that Canon didn't make the spot-meter function to any AF point
at least to some of them!!!! can it be done via a firmware???

I know that is not up to us but just to have a better idea of any possible firmware,
Thank you for your opinions

Serious doubts about the noise in my 5d mark 3....

Hi, I am by no doubts an expert in this but this looks really funky to me....
I uploaded this to vimeo so it isnt ideal by any means but i compared the two shoots and it isnt to far off either regarding the noise.. to be honest it looks even grainier on the original file. put on vimeo it smoothes out some of it.

IMG 7089 on Vimeo

shoot with a canon 5d mark 3
with a canon 16-35 II usm L lens
picturestyle: cinestyle
Iso: 320
aperture: 3.2
shutterspeed: 40
other settings:
1920p 25F ALL-I
auto ligtning optimizer off

Is this kind off noise really normal? And I know cinestyle makes it look a little bit worse but ive tried all the picturestyles and it doesnt differ much on my footage.

Film EOS Body

Hello fellow Canon users. First I apologize if this post doesn't go on this particular category but I think is the best place to ask.

I was looking online for info about the now out of production film EOS bodies. I started to photograph in the digital era about a year and a half ago after years wanting to study about it. When I finally had the money like ten years ago to actually take a course (I still had my dad's old Pentax MX) all school switched to Digital.

Now that Im always studying and teaching Lightroom in a school, I have that urge to shoot film.

And I need the more veteran Canon shooters to tell me what a good pro-sumer to pro could I buy, so I can take advantage of my EF mount lens.

I was looking the EOS-1N but I think it will be too heavy, for an overall shooting. And then I stumbled into the EOS-3 which looks a lil more slim in weight than the 1N. Any other body I can look into? And Id love to hear about EOS-3 users as that one is the one I most interested right now. Thanks!

Do you see lenses when you check the time?

Hi,

sometimes (maybe after looking on lens offers too much), when I check what time it is and I look at the numbers it reminds me of a lens, e.g., I looked at my phone and saw 17:55 so I thought of my EF-S 17-55mm... (quarter hour ago it was the 17-40mm WA zoom I want and an hour later it was my first 18-55mm kit lens)

Anybody else crazy in this way? (and how about after you read about it? :) )

By the way, I guess most of you use the 12h am/pm time so would only see UWA zooms like the sigma 8-16mm or canon 8-15mm, right?

Sigma 120 400 vs sigma 120 300 os 2012 + 1.4tc

I have a sigma 120 400 which is an ok tele for wildlife shots. But I find it sucks in low light. The af is too slow and hints terribly.

I'm interested in last years sigma 120 300 os as I already have a canon 1.4tc mk ii. Which would yield a 400mm f4.

Does anyone know how these two lenses compare on 5d mk iii (or otherwise)? I.e 120-400 vs 120-300+tc.

I'm interested in af speed, low light capability (ie covered woodland) and iq primarily but I've always found the colour cast on sigma 120400 to not be very accurate (more of a green tinge).

Any thoughts?

Filter holder/adapter for Samyang 14mm f2.8

Considering buying the Samyang 14mm f2.8 for landscape photography. I was wondering if anyone out there knows if I can attach a filter holder/adapter with this lens. I found this site offering the holder and the adapter for the Samyang but I am not sure about the quality of this product. Anyone used this product from Lucroit (Hitech Filter Systems) or know any other brands that make filter holders/adapters for this lens? Also, was wondering if system will take Lee's square ND/GND filters?

Best way to clean dust off focusing screen of 5D3?

There's a large, black speck of dust in the upper-right when I look through the viewfinder of my 5D3. I suspect (but don't know for sure) that it's on the focusing screen and not in the viewfinder itself.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty OCD about this stuff and I know that speck will drive me crazy even though it won't affect the pictures. Some folks here and elsewhere have described using a blower to successfully clear the dust. (I do have a Giotto Rocket Blower.) Can someone describe that procedure — especially with an eye toward minimizing the chances of introducing new dust?
