5D mark iii & off-camera flash

Hello Everyone
I have been searching the forums for answers to these questions, and have found variations but not really what I was looking for, so I am hoping some one can help me out.
I recently got a 5d Mkiii. Previously was using my 60D to fire my 580 ex II remotely off camera (I don't really like having flash on camera if I can help it). Obviously with the Mkiii I can't do this, so I was weighing a few options... esp since I would like to start doing multiple flash set-ups... so this are the options I have been weighing...

A) grab an ST-E2, or decent equivalent (help), us that, and then add either another 580 or 430 down the line
B) sell my 580 and get two Yongnuo 565s for the same price, and prob even the 622s to control
C) some sort of mixture of the above... but I am not sure how that would work.

If I am not mistaken, each Yongnuo requires its own 622 to be controlled, correct? But with the canon line I get one ST-E2 and it will fire flashes off camera without receivers? And if I have a 580, should my second flash also be 580, or will a 430 suffice for fill if the 580 is the main flash?

Mostly family portraits, etc... should have mentioned that!

thanks very much!

January 8, 2013 Announcements?

Not hearing much…

CES starts next week and with it a lot of camera companies will be launching consumer level products. Last year Canon launched the PowerShot G1 X for CES and that was about it.

No media events have been planned by Canon for next week. 99% of the time if Canon is launching a significant camera, there is some kind of media invite to showcase the new cameras.

However, when lenses are announced, that is not always the case. There was no media invites when the EF 24-70 f/4L IS and EF 35 f/2 IS were announced.

We’ve heard that two, possibly 3 lenses could be announced on January 8, 2013, but we have not received any confirmations from known sources yet.

Canon 5DIII and Media Cards...

I know that this is an old discussion topic...but I just am trying to clarify things for my (old) brain.
Regarding how the 5DIII records to to the two different card types, my readings and my own findings with my
camera tell me that:
1. If I write to the CF Card ONLY the write speed will be native to that card (with or without an SD card in the camera). i.e. a 600X card will record at or about 45MB/sec.
2. If I write to the SD Card ONLY the camera can only write up to 20MB/sec regardless as to the write-speed of the SD card that I put in the card slot. i.e. If I put a 600x SD card in the slot with 45MB/sec rated speed, the Camera will only be able to write to that card at 20MB/sec.
3. If I have a CF card and an SD card in each slot, both rated at 45MB/sec and set the camera to write to both cards simultaneously, in the same image type to each card (i.e. RAW, Jpeg, etc.), when I record an image, both cards will be written to at the slower, 20MB sec rate.
4. If I set the camera to write to both cards with different imaged types (i.e. write RAW to the CF and Jpeg to the SD, or visca-versa the writing will take a longer time than if the camera was set to write the same type of image to each card as in #3 above.
Question:
What is the fastest CF card that the camera can write to at the cards native write speed? i.e. how fast can the camera write to a CF card?
Any input to confirm 1-4 above or to increase my understanding of my camera would be welcome...I think I have it correct..but I could be wrong.
Thanks.

Oops, did it again !

So there I was, nice looking deal on a second hand Canon 17-40mm lens, down to the shop, the lens offered just the right focal range for me on my 6D, but the lens looked well used and had loose rings... Asked how of tern they had them in, quite often came the reply, what about the 16-35 I asked, oh we don't get many of those second hand... Can I try one please ? Out comes a 16-35mm II, onto the camera, snap, out comes the credit card for a new lens. Naughty me. ;-)

I'm guessing many of us do this with camera equipment, what's your tale and did you get into trouble with your significant other half ?

How does one change camera appearing under the poster's name?

My profile became available to be edited and I've got everything situated except this particular data field. Canonflex showed up first and after editing was enabled by the admin, Powershot something or nuther appears there now. I can't find this discussed anywhere and I don't know the name of the data field to do a proper search. Maybe this is something the Admin takes care of, I dunno know.

Anyone still using a 20D?

I have a 20D, and am waiting to buy a 5DMkIII this year if I can save up a bit. Should I simply assume the 20D is obsolete? I still really like it, and 8mp seems nice enough for some things that won't be blown up over 5x7 or so. Is anyone still shooting with this older camera, or is the tendency to simply let it go? It's such a dear friend....

Canon SX 50 v. Panny FZ200; is it just me, or does Canon smoke it for IQ?

Is it just me, or does the Canon not smoke the Panasonic on image quality in this review? The reviewer is touting the constant f/2.8 aperture throughout it's 24x (600mm) range, and granted that does give nicer background blur/subject separation, and of course that can give higher shutter speed and all...BUT. He never talks about the IQ differences in his own comparison shots.

http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Panasonic_Lumix_DMC_FZ200/

It just seems like from his shots anyway that the Canon gives much sharper images.

5d3 and FoCal errors

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this, but I recently purchased the FoCal software to help with autofocus adjustments and am running into an error (and not getting any responses trying to use their support). I'm hoping someone else on this forum has run into a similar problem and might have a solution (or ideas to try).

When running the MSC test the program is giving me the following error:

`A failure occured trying to focus. The reported error is: DoPhaseDetectAF: Action timeout'

Exposure on the target is ~1/25 f/2.8 iso 100 and when depressing the shutter button the camera is able to acquire focus quickly without problem.

Camera (Body Only) or Camera with Bundle Kit

Hi everyone, this is my very first post so please be gentle. I just recently became a father of a 5 months old baby, and me and my wife likes to take our son for his photoshoot every 3 months. Well, having your child photographed by pro does not come cheap so instead of doing that, I'm going to purchase my very first DLSR camera, debating on Canon 60D or T4i, although I really want the Canon 6D or better yet the Canon 5D Mark III (out of my budget) and learn the basics of photography. So, I just want peoples opinion on what's smarter for point and shoot person to entry level photographer on what to purchase beforehand. Is it better for me to buy a camera with bundle kit or just buy camera (body only) because a friend of mine told me that its very important to have great lens. I also want to know peoples suggestions on what lenses I would need for portrait/low-light landscape/cityscape photography. I've read a few must have lenses, Canon EF 50mm f1.8 (for the low price) & Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM (for quality).

Thanks everyone, appreciate it!

Exposure and focusing help with tilt/shift lenses

I just purchased a TS-E 24 II. I know exposure is usually best set before applying any T/S adjustments. However, there seems to be a lot of difference in the actual exposures, even when using this method. I set exposure using only the Manual mode (all manual, no auto ISO!), which works pretty well. Does anyone have a method they use to speed-up the exposure accuracy process?

Also, I have found that focusing in manual exposure mode, can be difficult in Live-View using the exposure simulation mode (too dark). So I do not use it (exp sim) except in bright sunlight. For tripod-mounted shots I have found some workarounds. However, I plan on doing a lot of handheld work with this lens too where I will be focusing strictly through the viewfinder. Any suggestions or methods out there that have worked well for you?

Thanks in advance!

Why would a beginner not buy an EOS 650?

A friend has asked me to recommend a camera (that does everything!), so I've been looking at the specs of the 'entry level' Canon DSLRs.

In the UK, the 650 comes bundled with an 18-55 II for 498 GBP ... I'm not sure there's anything else that represents the same value for money in the smaller chip size?

I'm also going to suggest they handle a few DSLRs and compare them with mirrorless models to see what they think of the handling. Any recommendations ?

Great stills, not so great video

Gizmodo has reviewed the EOS 6D and found it to be a great still camera. However, they did notice the video produced by the EOS 6D is prone to pretty bad moire, something that doesn’t affect the EOS 5D Mark III.

As I’ve told most people, if serious video is your thing, get a 5D Mark III. We are hoping the moire issue can be resolved somewhat with a future firmware update.

Gizmodo Conclusion

“If you are most interested in stills and don’t care that much about video quality, the 6D is a great value—it produces top-notch pictures, with very few compromises, at a lower price than we’ve ever seen. But if you are looking for the video prowess of the 5D Mark III, plan to pony up that extra $900.”

Evaluating Usage of a Canon 1D Mark IV or any other video capable DSLR

I've been on the lookout for an excellent deal for a used 1D Mark IV and found a few with ridiculously low shutter counts, some at less than 5,000 and many under 10,000. It just occured to me that thousands of hours of video may have been shot by those camera bodies. Does anyone know if that affects the shutter counts and if not, does video hours affect the useful life of the camera.

6D vs 5D mark III

So, here is a review and a bunch of tests on dynamic range, low light, focus, and video between these cameras:

Canon 6D Vs. 5D Mark III Hands On Review

Interestingly enough the video on the 6D looked much sharper than the 5D. However, while my video didn't have much Moire in it, other tests are showing this is a huge issue in the 6D and not so much in the 5D. Canon must have removed something to make the 6D sharper that no longer defends against Moire.
