Unable to AFMA 70-200mm 2.8 is II

So i am so excited that i finally got this lens. Sad part is no matter what i do i cannot get it into focus. It always seems to be just a bit off. On closer inspection i noticed i had it at +20 the highest AFMA available and it cannot get accurate focus. It is just a slight bit front focused. I feel like for a 2500 lens I would want it to be acurate. As i am typing this i am wondering if its on when its at 70. The sample images are all cropped and shot at 200. Should i send it and the camera to canon? I have acquired what i consider to be a set of bodies and lenses i am content with(minus 5d mark iii) and i have heard you can send all you equipment to canon and have it all calibrated to each other. If so what does it cost? Or am i being to picky?

Canon Warranty on Unauthorized Dealers and/or Grey Market

I saw this on another forum...

CPW started a poll to see if unauthorized dealer items are eligible for warranty. Also to see if grey market items are eligible for warranty. Canon "says" one thing in their policies but what they actually do might be different.

Poll: http://www.canonpricewatch.com/warranty-poll/

So if you've tried to get warranty service on an unauthorized dealer item, please report your experience on the poll. And then we'll all know whether or not they honor warranty on unauthorized or not.

Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM

this way i'll have some incentive to actually do it. (now that started a thread)

my sigma arrived today. first thoughts, it's heavy and seems very well made. hood snaps in place in a very nice positive manner. The focus ring has a short throw, and a just very so slightly scratchy quality. but my wrists might be more fine tuned than others ;D The focus ring also has a fair bit of damping, it's not going anywhere by accident. I'm impressed so far. I'm not reviewer, and i don't do much in the way of my own little tests, but i'll breakout the tripod and get something up. whatever i do, i guess i'll do the same with my 24-105 and 16-35 just for kicks.
anyway, i hope to get this up shortly.

With my 5D MK III is an f/2.8 lens really needed???

Hi All,

I've been mulling over this since I bought the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II this past weekend. Not sure if its buyers remorse or rookie mistake in not realizing the capabilities of my new 5d MK III.

I currently use a 5d MK III and while using my 24-105L f/4 i noticed that I can easily shoot dimly lit indoor scene (church wedding, night indoor events, etc.) just by bumping up the ISO to 8000-10000 and the images look very good still! I have not notice any drastic increases in noise and even so I can get it out using software. Now I have not tried printing these shots yet BUT even in 100% crop the images looks good.

Is there any merit to this line of thinking that f/4 lenses are good enough to use for dimly lit scnese using the 5d MK III? Should i exchange the 70-200mm 2.8 IS II with the 70-200 f/4 IS and save the $900 difference and apply that to a 16-35 MK II or the 35 L? Your opinions/experience would be great on this! thanks in advance!

standard zoom upgrade

Hello guys,

in spring I bought 60D with 15-85 and I was pretty happy about it. Based on reviews and shots it should have been very good lens and it really is. When my 100L was delivered this september I instantly realized I like images from my 100L much more.
Basically now the situation is, that my 15-85 is stuck in bag until I really want to take wide shots like landscapes or there is no working distance. Also there are much less keepers from 15-85 then from 100L.

Should I consider selling 15-85 and upgrading to 24-70mkII or 24-105? Is it worth for 60D? I like to shot wide open so f/2.8 would be advantage for me, but €2k+ pricetag is something what make you think. Standard zoom is very useful lens to have for general shooting. In the future I would like to move to FF so please consider this too. Somewhere back in my mind there is also idea of buying 50L (based on posts here) and maybe later add some wide and fast prime.
So guys, what are your thoughts?
Thanks

Best/Quickest way to move AF points around when shooting? (vs Focus/Recompose)

Hi all,

I've been wanting to try to be able to quickly set my focus points where I need them while handholding, looking through the viewfinder....and shooting.

I saw a guy on CreativeLive that shoots weddings, and he says he does this quite a lot, rather than try to focus and recompose...

I think I'd like to do that too...but man...I just can't seem to get it to work well for me...as that every time I have to push the 3rd from the right of the 3 buttons top right of the back of the camera to activate the AF point changing...and then with my thumb...move the joy stick around to move the focus around.

Is there a way to fix the camera so that all you have to do, is move the joy stick and not have to hit that button first every time? I could do this if I didn't have to click that button THEN move the joy stick for every shot.....

I've not found a way around this....anyone have a suggestion or setting I may have missed?

Does anyone else do this...or do most people try to focus then recompose...click the button down halfway to focus, move over...then finish clicking all the way down to trip the shutter?

I'd heard some people don't like to focus and recompose, since with the spherical nature of the lens...that focus and recompose can sometimes lead to soft images...?

Thoughts? Suggestions? How do you do it?
I'm talking single shot at this point...no AF servo.......

Thanks in advance,

cayenne

Just pulled trigger on 70-200 2.8L IS II USM - NEW - $1625.99

OH man..I'm excited...my xmas gift to myself.

I just wasn't going to chance the Canon instant rebates not being extended past EOM....and I may need this lens to try to shoot some stuff for a quick makeshift portfolio so I can apply for volunteer photog at next years JazzFest....so, early xmas present for myself.

I got the great deal at Crutchfields.....no tax...free shipping.

Canon price with rebate = $2099.99....I bought my 5D3 w/kit lens plus the 85mm f/1.8 from Crutchfield, signing up for their rewards points, and an offer at the time for double rewards (you can often find a coupon for this too)....

So, rewards points worth $474 cashed in.....subtracted from the $2099.99, gave me the lens shipped for $1625.99.

Now..can't wait for Friday for it to arrive at my front door to play with this weekend!!!

haha!

When I was in Kenya, we had an incident at Lake Nakuru with a baboon entering our vehicle and scaring the you-know-what out of me. He was sitting on my 5D Mark II, but he didn’t eat it. It turns out Ed Hetherington had the same sort of thing happen and sacrificed his Canon EOS 5D Mark II and EF 16-35 f/2.8L II for some fun photographs. The good and bad news? The lens lived, but the camera is touch and go.

BigValueInc - Ad claim of Canon USA Warranty is blatant lie, buyers beware!

CR recently ran a tip about Canon EOS 5D Mark III Body $2499. Go to the eBay link and the ad clearly states at the top for all to see "Canon USA Warranty" which is in fact a blatant lie.

I called Canon and asked them specifically about their warranty policy after reading their written legal warranty description. Despite the legal language not including a single mention of "authorized dealer", their stated policy is that they do not honor warranty on any item not purchased from an "authorized dealer", reasoning that non-authorized dealers are considered the "first purchaser", not the "reseller". According to Canon, that makes the buyer from BigValueInc the second buyer of a used camera. Yet the BigValueInc ad prominently lists it as "New" with "Canon USA Warranty".

BigValueInc is not on Canon's list of authoized dealers. In fact BigValueInc even states in their "about us" section that they are not an authorized dealer.

Yet there it is right at the top for all to see "Canon USA Warranty" and "New". Both of which are in fact a blatant lies.

It's also interesting that eBay is looking the other way on this matter.

I almost bit on one of these for $2886 after missing out on the $2499 deal...glad I looked into it closer...and felt this info was worth sharing.

Believe it or not, 5D3 user misses the 300D reach...

I miss the reach of my 300D and the 100-400L. With that combination I thought I got 640 mm focal length. Then I bought the 5D3. And the 400 mm seems to be - well, 400 mm! So I decided to get back to Rithmetic. Well, 400 x 1.4 = 560. 5.6 x 1.4 = 7.84! Wow! that is less than f8. And hopefully, Canon will deliver next year - meaning 2013 on f8 focus.

Now There is the Sigma 150-500 that is a f5-6.3!

So the question is, should I get:

The 1.4x III extender for my 100-400L

The Sigma 150-500 mm lens. I intend to keep the 100-400L.
What experience do you have on the Canon 100-400L + 1.4x
OR
The sigma 150-500 mm Lens

Thanks in advance.

Rustom

Technical novice upgrading to EOS 5D?

I am thinking of upgrading from an Eos 30D to an Eos 5D MkII. Basically I am a hobby photographer who'd like to do stills along with video at a much higher image quality. My style is not so much about perfect detail and technical images - I don't mind a little dithering from noise and blur. My problem with the 30D is its focus reliability, along with low resolution and no ability for video.

2 things I'd like to know are -

Do my needs justify a 5D over a 7D?

Will my lenses now be useless?

-Canon Zoom Lens - 17 mm - 85 mm - F/4.0-5.6 - Canon EF-S
-Canon Lens - 50 mm - F/1.8 - Canon EF

Here's some of my photos for ref:

Takumars, Anyone?

Anyone else here like Takumars?

I have a 50 1.4 Super Takumar, the kind with the Thorium, which I love shooting on my 7D. It seems ideal on the 7D for sharpeninjg corners the poor man's way. I also like the warm glow it gives like everything. Sure now, and it could be added in post, but I like the visceral sort of feel it brings. At some point I might even get around to posting some of my favourite images from it! I also like the fact that it is all metal, and the focussing is epicly smooth.

Anyone else out there like them?

First Time Ever Filming, Feedback Appreciated

Shot with a 60d and a 17-55 2.8 IS. I think one shot was done with a 7d and a 50 1.8. I used my setup though for practice. Used 24 fps at 1/50 shutter speed.

This was obviously done in low light and I cranked the ISO as high as it goes for the dark scenes.

I've just read that ISO's 160, 320, 640, 1280, 1500, 3000, etc are the best performers when it comes to ISO. Then I read something about dynamic range and I got a bit confused.

All help and advice is appreciated. Thanksssss.

Picture Styles: 5D Mark III

So I've been searching for preferred 5D III picture styles for stills, but all I can find are ones common for videography. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I only ask because I think that I may have subpar copies of the 24-70 II and 70-200 IS II; unless I add sharpening to my user-defined styles, or use one of the default presets with added sharpening, they look noticeably soft. I have been shooting in faithful/neutral without added sharpening, and the results are quite discouraging.

On the other hand, right off the bat without AFMA, my 100 macro IS is tack sharp even without added sharpening. Therefore, I don't think that my body's the issue. Either they are bad copies or they require significant calibration, perahps?

Selling question...

So a couple months back, before the 5d mk II price drop, I picked up a well used 5d mk II from a very trustworthy seller that was just selling his back up for some cash for about $1500. This probably wasn't the wisest choice I've made, even though he was a nice guy, but he said he was not able to get an accurate shutter count. At the time I didn't really pay much mind to it because it came with the first party battery grip and two batteries and it was a heck of an upgrade from my 60d in my eyes then. Anyways, now I have finally gotten the actual shutter count, a whopping 251k. Does anyone on here think this is even worth selling to someone or will the count just scare away anyone that sees it? I've thought of selling it with the grip and batteries again of course, along with a 16gb cf card and a 32 gb cf card with hopes of breaking even with what I paid for or at least to make most of it back.

p.s. Is asking for what I paid for now way too much? With all I am including, any suggestions on how I could price it accordingly? The body is well loved as they say, with really only cosmetic wear, same with the accompanying grip.
