500 x $10K or 600 x$13K

Hi! I have a hard time making my mind.... First, I'm not a pro, I do not make money with my photos, it's just something I do really enjoy and instead of spending my money on cars or bikes, I do on camera gear, I consider it less dangerous and the money can be recovered much easier by selling in case of need loosing less than when you sell a used car or bike.....

I for a looong time being thinking into get a long prime, a 500mm or a 600mm, it's a lot of money for a hobby, but I think I will enjoy it, and also have already a few repeated or overlapping focal lens glass that I will sell to help pay for the prime, like a Sigma 120-300 f2.8 (the last one) and also have the EF 70-200 f2.8 L II with the 1.4 and 2X extenders, so don't really need the Sigma, also have the 24-105 f4 L and got the 24-70 f2.8 L II and a few more that can go.....

So the thing I guess is, does the extra 100mm really worth the extra $3K on that lens? For what I was able to see, the difference in sharpness between the Canon 600 and the Sigma at 300mm with the 2X extender is abysmal, does anyone have a chance to compare these two first hand?

Am I crazy for wanting to have one of these lenses for a hobby use? Love birds, but the sort of crappy autofocus speed I'm getting with the Sigma and the 2X extender and the so so quality it's discouraging.

The bodies I have are 5D MKIII and 1D X

Thanks.

Need advice: Rumored 14-24 f/2.8L vs existing 16-35 f/2.8 L Advantages?

Hi, although my bank account is set up for saving, just a question towards the professional and more advanced photographers out there: As how important do you consider the additional 2mm on the wide end which will be offered by a rumored 14-24 f/2.8 L. Does it make a big difference or what would you do? What are the probable advanteges on the wide end?

As an enthusiast amateur I am on a budget and first considered the Sigma 12-24 f/4.5-5.6. But it is a tad too slow for my nightphotography preferencies: nightscapes and milky way preferably during moonless nights.

So, maybe I'd go for a 16-35 instead which as equivalent to the Canon EF-S 10-22 on my former 30D expect the difference in speed (about one stop, but permanently). The price tag surely will be another argument, as it will be considerably higher than the one of the 16-35 f/2.8 L (CHF 1361.00 online over here).

Thanks for your advice. Cheers, Pedro.

Yet another help me decide thread...

Been lurking on this site for quite some time and I think it's a good time to pose the upgrade question because I have a severe case of Upgradeitis :P

A little background on myself. My first camera was a Canon AE-1 when I was a sophomore in high school. Upgraded to a Elan II after high school, on to a G3 and finally to my current kit a T1i ( 500D ). I consider myself a serious amateur.

I'm also a member of a studio for which I am now a staff member. I worked with both Canon and Nikon's but I feel most comfortable with Canons since that's what I grew up with.

I can't begin to tell you how much I miss shooting full frame. My son will be starting digital photography in a few weeks at his high school so I will be giving him my kit so daddy needs a new DSLR ;D

I do not want a crop sensor and although the 6D appears to be a fine camera I just don't see it as much of an upgrade with the AF system( 9 points going to 11) and build quality, shutter in particular. Which leaves either the 5D Mark III or the 1Dx.

Currently I have been concentrating on studio lighting so that's what I have been primarily shooting the last 18 months but I shoot everything, landscape, time lapse, sports etc.

I understand that the 1Dx is twice the cost over the Mark III and I'm fine with that. I guess my question is it too much of a leap going to the 1Dx over the Mark III? The AF systems on both cameras are similar so the learning curve should be about the same.

I see that the prices have come down for the holiday season. It's speculative I know but would now be a good time to buy or should I wait for the rebate period? I usually get my tax refund in late Febuary. I also want to pick up either a 85mm f/1.2L II or a 24-70mm f/2.8L II.

Thanks for taking the time to read and look forward to seeing your feedback

Please help, did I receive a defective lens? 40mm f/2.8

Hi, I just got my lens from Amazon yesterday, and everything is working good except it makes this really weird noise when I focus manually on MF mode, it's even louder than the AF sound which I find strange... Is this normal?

It sounds something like this: Manual Focus Noise from Canon 40mm F/2.8 Pancake STM lens on T4i 650D

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Does a 39.3mp Sensor Exist? [CR1]

Big megapixel

We’ve heard previously about a 46mp image sensor that exists and is in testing. We’re now told that multiple large megapixel sensors exist, and one that is sure to reach market is a 39.3mp sensor.

There is also a suggestion that we will see DIGIC VI processors before the larger megapixel camera(s) reach the market in late 2013 or early 2014.

This comes from a new source, so take it with a grain of salt.

I’ve also heard from two different people that the earthquake that happened in Japan is still affecting manufacturing and development of new products at Canon, though Canon would never officially admit to such a thing.

As far as new stuff goes, we should see the APS-C segment and lenses addressed before a large megapixel camera arrives on the scene.

*EDITED* USB Cable for 5D Mark III

I want to run my laptop as an external (EDIT) monitor. I am using the USB cable that came with my camera to test out the EOS Utility. My question however is do I need a special USB cable or will any of them with a mini end work? The one that comes with the camera looks to have a fuse on each end or something. I'm looking at buying a 25 ft or at least a 10 ft cable. Something of that nature.

Thanks for the feedback! I love this forum!

5D III and 300 2.8 II hit rate for sharp pictures very low

Hello,

I have a 5d III and the 300mm 2.8 II.
According to test this combination should crate fantastic sharp photos, but I have really big problem that to get sharp pictures.

I normally use the center focus point as single focus point.
I realized that objets that are more than 10 - 15 meters away the hit rate is very low.
I did go through the AF menu from A-Z but I found no solution. AFMA made everything only worse.

I attached one picture of many, that are all no really sharp. ISO 100, 2.8 1/4000

Does anyone of you has similar problems. With my other lenses I never had such problems (70-200 2.8 II, 24-105 4, ...)

Thank you.

Best Regards,
Flo

3rd party BG-E9

So I have this 3rd party BG-E9 grip. I've had it for probably a little over a year now. However, I dropped it around 8 months ago and the lock for the battery compartment broke. that discouraged me a little. But that's not my problem. I picked it up again to try and use it (still works and all. I missed the grip), but there was a sticky substance on it. No one has spilt anything or it or the likes. I cleaned it and it was not sticky anymore. But then it's stayed on my shelf for another 2 months with no use and still there's this sticky substance on it. i'm just curious as to what's happening. not that it doesn't contain a battery in side as I alternate them now in my 60D (and 5D 3). It's just really interesting. I also caught a whif of the smell on my hands and it smelt sort of mechanical (I don't know how to explain it. The downside of being a musician).

Moving on from my 7D to 5D MK III 24-70mm, 24-105mm or prime

Okay, I"m thrilled to have finally received my 5D MK III! Coming from my 7D I have some of the longer focal lengths covered, 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II and the legendary 100-400mm L. Most of my wider lenses are EF-s Lenses like my wonderful EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8...

I need some wider glass for my 5D III any suggestions? I'm looking at 24-70 f/2.8, 24-105 f/4, or maybe primes like a 24mm or 35mm or 50mm f/1.4... any thoughts?? EF 85mm 1.8 is on my short list, but it's not really wide...

Thanks!!

More time with the EOS 6D

When I brought the EOS 6D to Costa Rica as my only camera body, I honestly didn’t think I’d like the camera all that much. I’ve had the luxury of using some great cameras like the EOS-1D X and EOS 5D Mark III. However, after a little over a week with it, I must say that I’m very impressed.

The Good (So far)

The image quality is top notch, I find colour rendition and dynamic range to be terrific.

Build quality, the camera doesn’t feel cheap.

The ergonomics are better than I thought they’d be.

The center AF point is quite good.

The Bad (So far)

Battery life is terrible if GPS and WiFi are on.

There was the odd time 1/8000 would have been nice.

The outer AF points, while better than the 5D2, aren’t as accurate as the center point.

I have big hands and the control pad inside the dial can be inaccurate if not pressed perfectly.

I still don’t like the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II on the EOS 6D. Mainly because of the bulk of the lens compared to the body. The results are terrific, it just doesn’t balance well. I wouldn’t use a battery grip on a small camera, however it may feel better if you do.

I will continue to evaluate the camera during my stay in Costa Rica and work towards a full review of the EOS 6D.

Below are some images from San Jose, Costa Rica taken yesterday.

Marriage Proposal Video

This was a beautiful night to shoot a proposal at Sea Port Village in San Diego CA. Check it out and let me know what you think. There were a lot of things I would change and would have done differently while shooting, but there is very little time to plan for something like this, especially since we kept getting moved around by the security guard which messed up the whole original plan! Anyway check it out! I did record this music as well.

5D3 + 50 F1.2 L

Just bought 50L f1.2. Mount on my 5D3, the center focus point is accurate from f1.2 throughout the range and all distance. However the left most, right most, top most and bottom most cross point are all front focus. Is there anyone has experience that if Canon Service Center (Irvine, CA) can help adjust the 5D3 internal computer to make those 4 out side cross points focus accurately? Or I'd better return the lens within 30 days and forget about 50L? I called them and they say that they can help but no guarantee. That sounds to me "why bother the effort". Any suggestion?

About using the Canon Drop-in Circular Polarizing Filter PL-C 52?

Hi Forum Readers!

About the use of the Canon Drop-in Circular Polarizing Filter PL-C 52

I am a bit interested in how often you actually use this filter and in which situations you find the desirable use of the Drop-in Circular Polarizing Filter PL-C 52 with your tele-lenses from Canon?

The benefits may be the many?(I am considering if this filter would be part of my equipement?) but there is also this fact of a light loss of up to 2 stops, but maybe a fast glass like EF300mm with f/2.8 would be the right lens to be equipped with this filter? Is the filter-effect affected if you are using the lens stopped down (like f/8)?

I am mostly interested in the end result, what the Drop-in Circular Polarizing Filter PL-C 52 can add to your photographs compared to photos without this filter.

Anyone here who maybe like to share something, about your experiences, when you are using this filter?

Wishing you all a very good new year 2014!

Greetings to you all!

A1200 for $35

.
Just ordered a little Powershot A1200 from the refurb store. At $35, how can you go wrong? Sale ends today.

The OVF is what got me. That, and the simplicity, I guess. Throw in a couple of AA batteries, paste it to your face and go shooting.

No RAW, no IS of any kind. But an f/2.8 28mm zooms to f/5.9 at 112mm.

And if it gets run over by a bus, no big deal (just get it off your face before the bus comes!).

Upgrade from 6D from 450D

Been pondering a change to full frame for a while now, the 6D has whet my appetite, but in order to fund, I'm proposing to sell a fair bit of crop kit, specifically my current 450D and kit 18-55mm lens, my 15-85mm, my 10-22mm and possibly my very underused 70-300 IS - which would net me about £1000-1200, leaving me to find about £450 to buy a 6D body.

I'm left with the 135mm L and 50mm 1.4, but I'm wondering about a wide option, my local camera shop has a second hand 28-135mm for £125, would I be selling myself short and better off with a cheapish wide prime, 28mm 1.8 perhaps ? Looking at my shots in the last year, my 135mm & 50mm have been used most, I'm using my 15-85 and 10-22 mostly at their widest.

I'm keen to slowly build a good lens set, interested in the yet to be released 24-70 f4, plus the 8-15 in due course, I'm not shooting much beyond 135mm as I generally shot portraits, plants and landscape, but my lingering thought right now is just how much gain will I get from the upgrade, specifically in terms of light collecting performance, imagine noise and colour rendition over my 450D

Go on, help me press the button - and no buy a 5DIII pundits thanks ;-)

Dropped my 70-200L F4 onto the carpet from my bag. Advice.

While under the ravages of the flu, I dropped my 70-200L F4 onto the carpet from my bag. I guess it dropped about 4 feet. What tests do you recommend to make sure it is still functional? If the lens is broken (hopefully not), what are my options? The lens is just over a year old.

I love it very much and feeling bummed out (the flu does not help matters; I am freezing cold and feel completely out of it which is why I dropped it).

Thanks for any advice.

Poll: where do you expect the price of the (rumored) 45-50Mp EOS to be. Under $4k, $4k-5k, $5k-6k, $6k-7k, higher. Now, I know we're not having a crystal ball, the point is where are we investing.

Reminding 5D2 went down in history as a camera with tremendous potential and hidden added value (video) at affordable price. Now that's the kind of innovation we want from Canon. An affordable 21Mp sensor beating N@kon's 35Mp IQ is the answer for example. So, let's see what the rumored price expectancy is and see if Canon surprises.

The best for '13.
(hope it's not $13k btw).
