Getting started with 600EX-RT, advice?

So I got my first flash, a 600EX-RT. So far I just got a Gary Fong Lighsphere diffuser for it and that's about it. I was just curious as to what fun things I can do with it just to experiment. I've always shot with natural light/reflectors, but I know flashes open up a whole new world. I feel like I'm clueless as to where to start, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Newcomer looking for budget wildlife equipment

A colleague tells me his son (late-teens rather than small child) is interested in getting a camera for shooting wildlife. Since he doesn't have much cash (budget to be decided) he'll be looking at the cheap end of things. As it's been a long time since I've looked at the entry-level stuff I need your help to show the lad what's on offer. A quick look around the web suggests it may be:

1. EOS 1100D (there's a £30 cashback deal on until 24th Jan.). Can get this for £278 (body) or £339 (with 18-55 IS).
2. EF 70-300 f4-5.6 IS. Can get this for £279 (US import) from same place I got my 300mm 2.8 IS so I know the guy is trustworthy.

The only drawbacks I can see are the 1100D doesn't have sensor cleaning and is only 3fps. Of course you can't expect 1DX performance for that money but I do have standards ;).

Any advice would be welcomed. All options are possible though maybe not second-hand (who knows how high the body was dropped from? :o)

Let the arguments begin!

An EOS 3D Mention [CR1]

The myth!

The EOS 3D gets another mention over at Northlight, this time in the form of a 50+mp camera body that will appear in late 2013 or early 2014.

While I am pretty sure we’ll see such a camera eventually, I’m not sure when it will materialize.

Canon seems to be taking their time with a big megapixel camera, here’s hoping it’s because they want to get it right. I also think Canon is getting the “popular” lenses upgraded first to help get the most out of the upcoming big sensors.

From Canon France

Canon France has begun teasing us about a new product. They have titled the teaser “Creativity with a twist”. With the graphic they also say (Translated):

“Soon, we will share information that will change the way you look at the world…”

By the image below, it looks like they’re talking about small camcorders. Or maybe they’re going to take another run at a TX1 type of product.

I notice the missing camcorder and missing ping pong ball, what does it all mean? I’m sure whatever it is, we’ll see it for CES in just over a week.

Yet another second body/backup camera question

To make the story short, my wife and I started a photography business for candid portraits and journalistic style weddings almost six months ago and are seeing enough business and opportunity to take the plunge on a big purchase to upgrade our equipment.

I currently shoot with a 50D and she has a T3 and we have stretched these cameras to their limits.

We are potentially buying two cameras. The first will be a 5DmkIII without question, but the possibility of buying a second is still in the air. If we are going to take the plunge from a business perspective I'd like to buy two 5D3s, but that's out of our budget coupled with the lenses we need to upgrade.

We could probably get by with the 5D3/50D/T3 as backup but I don't trust the T3 to compete with anything once a light is turned off. It barely squeaks by at ISO800, and that is unacceptable to me if we should need it.

What would you all suggest as the second camera? The 6D is outside of budget and close enough in price to the 5D3 from an investment perspective that we'd just get two if we could swing it, but we can't. So that leaves the the 7D and 5dmkII.

For those of you that have used these cameras at weddings and other candid events, what would you say the highest acceptable ISO is when shooting RAW? What about AF performance at f/2.0 and below in okay to worse light?

I know full-frame is the best option for portraits, but the 7D is pretty cheap brand new right now, so I don't want to take it off the table.

Thank you once again CR ::)

5D II or 5D III or 6D?

Hi, I know that this topic has been well covered in the past but I am having a real hard time deciding what to do so I thought ask professional's opinion.

I am currently shooting 5D(mark I) and have few L lenses(16-35,24-70,70-200,35). I did not think about upgrading to mark II in the past but now that price is reduced to $1600 or used ($1300ish?) I thought It might be a good buy. Although, 6D is now going for $2000 and I will not surprise it will go down to $1800 sometime soon. At same time, Mark III is still a little expensive for me but needless to day it is BY FAR the best choice(of course).

I am NOT a pro photographer who makes living by shooting. I should not be spending more than $2000 but if you all suggest mark III then that would be a possibility. I have been wanting to get a 135L for a while so I am thinking about just getting a used mark II and get a used 135L (around $2000?) or get a 6D new for $2000 or just be smart and get a mark III(around $2800?). I have bought used lens but never a body, is it a bad idea? Would you choose used mark II($1300or less) or 6D or $2000? I love shooing in low light and I don not care about WI-FI or Video at all. In fact, I probably never will use those things.

Thank you very much and I really appreciate your suggestions!

A few words on Adorama's customer service

Hi Everyone

The legendary Helen Oster answer and after a few emails I got a $200 dlls gift certificate in my hands... Super easy, no problems at all.

I Just want to share with you guys this, because is the kind of "details" that make us keep "loyal' as customers

The IS of Canon 70-300l

Was going to get the 17-40mm for $699 at BH for myself for Xmas but am stumped now that Adorama has the 70-300l is for $1099. I could probably get $350 for my non-l 70-300is on ebay so the lenses would in essence cost the same amount.

question about the description of the 70-300l - note below in red

Designed to deliver ultra-high quality images along with lightning fast operation, the new Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS USM telephoto zoom lens brings a favorite zoom range to the celebrated Canon L-series of lenses.

It features two Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) elements for improved image quality and reduced chromatic aberration, incorporates a floating focusing mechanism for sharpness from close up to infinity, plus an IS system that increases usability by approximately four stops.

The EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS USM features a function that prevents erroneous operation when the lens is mounted on a tripod or monopod. Gleaming white, with an optional removable tripod collar, dust and water resistant construction, and a newly developed Fluorine coating that keeps soiling, smears and fingerprints to a minimum, its phenomenal performance and flexibility is assured.
---------------------------------------------

what does that mean? it auto detects when the 70-300l is on a monopod. I use my 100-400 on a monopod and keep the IS on all the time? does this have anything to do with the 70-300 not having a tripod collar? sorry if this has been discussed before, I haven't had time to look at past postings about this lens and have to order by Jan 5.

Need a little help with 300mm 2.8 IS that I just bought used...

I just received the lens and started playing around with it and immediately noticed that when the IS is turned on, it makes a clearly audible "whirring" sound while focusing and for 2-3 seconds after focus is locked. When IS is off, no "whirring" sound.

I have several lenses with IS and I've never heard anything like this. Is 2-3 seconds of "whirring" normal for the 300mm 2.8 IS?

Would appreciate any feedback since I'm in the return window....thanks.

Not just the EOS-1D C

There have been a few mentions of a new Cinema EOS DSLR body being announced in 2013. It would take on a smaller form factor than the EOS-1D C and would not shoot 4K video.

It wasn’t mentioned which DSLR it would be built around, but I think an APS-C Cinema EOS based around the upcoming EOS 7D replacement would be a good place to start.

The EOS-1D C has yet to reach the retail chain at the time of writing this, but it’s said to be arriving “very soon”.

From a new source, so take this with a grain of salt.

What lenses should I take to India?

Hello there folks! This is my first post so go easy on me, okay :) I'm heading to S.India at the end of Jan for six weeks and was just wondering if you think a 16-35mm f2.8 II and 50mm f1.4 are enough to capture most scenes(street, portraits, landscape etc...) Traveling light is a priority so can't really take a big tele and to be honest I don't really shoot over 100mm that often(not yet anyway). Also should 3 batteries get my 5D mkii through a whole day or two of heavy shooting as I'll be away from charging points quite often? Thanking you all kindly and happy to be here! Merry Christmas :)

Canon 580 EX ii Lock-Release not working

Hi... I have a two years old 580 EX ii... Over the weekend, I was taking pictures and when done, I tried taking it off the camera. Press the release button and normally, then I can slide it to the left to release it so that I can smoothly pull it out of the camera hot shoe. I pressed the button and then noticed that the lock release slider wasn't moving. Normally, I hold the camera on my right hand and then use the left hand to do it. I noticed a tension. I tried again... What? It wouldn't move. I then hold down the camera against the floor, left hand on the flash, right hand on pressing the release button. Still didn't move. After a while, I was able to get it off. I was confused. I put it away.

10 minutes later, my wife wanted additional pictures. I put it back on. Putting it goes fine. When done, I couldn't take it off again. I struggled with it after some times, and managed to take it off. That was on a 5D3.

Next day, I tried the flash on my 7D. Took two shots with it. Then tried taking it off. This was worse. It was like it was super glue onto my 7D. After numerous attempt, I got it off.

Anyone has experienced this behavior? Up unitl now, I have no issue with it and it performs flawlessly.

Second lens for first time FF user

I've just ordered a Canon 5d classic and 50mm EF lens as a first try at full frame. I've no other compatible lenses and was wondering what I should buy next. I'm mostly interested in landscapes with some portrait work as well, and I wouldn't mind macro capability for flowers etc. I was looking to spend up to £300 for my next lens, or maybe £500 or a couple of lenses.

What would your first choices be?

Thanks in advance

Any update to the 60D in next 6months?

This is my first post, be gentle.

The time to sell my t1i with accessories and a lens or two is quickly passing me by. My question is what to upgrade to. 60D seems like a great deal, and even if it was updated this would fall out of my $1000 price range(body only).

It seems like I should go for the 60D while its still around unless the t5i would be better or the 7D will fall under $1000 after an update in the next 6 months.

Which of these scenarios seem likely? Thanks for your help.

Bokeh confusion.

Hello learned friends.
I recently did a job for a client who wanted me to take pictures to sell land/second homes in his farmland.
I am attaching two photos: Bath Tub and Glasses.
I like the bokah on the shot with the glasses but somehow do not like the way the sand is going out of focus in the bath tub shot.
Is it me of does anyone else also find it unpleasant?
Tech info (same for both shots!) 70-200 II f2.8 @200mm.
Thx,
Sanjay

Yongnuo flash sync

Hi, I currently have a 600EX-RT that I use with my yongnuo YN-622C triggers and they work great. I am wondering if the YN 560 II flashes will be controllable from my 5D2 through more YN-622C units (I still work on full manual), or is it only the twice as expensive YN-565EX that work that way. Also, is it just worth it to pay half the money and go full manual with YN-560 II and YN-RF603 and go up to the flashes to change their output?

If anyone has experience with the YN-560-IIs and the YN-622Cs help would be appreciated :)

Thanks

Helo,

i just upgraded my gear to a 5dmk III with a 24-105...i used to have a pentax k20d since 2008..
I am a graphic designer and work mostly with posters, logos, catalogues, advertising, and ofcourse photographs i need for my work (product, scene, urban, portrait...) Im on a tight budget since i paid 3699 euros for my new canon kit.
Im looking for a very sharp versatile lens that would give me the best results in an allaround kind of way, the 24-105 is sweet but not enough as i really miss extra crispynes and bokeh for art shots. I would like to have a secnod lens in my kit and not spend any money for at least a year or two.

I am definetly thinking about buying a prime, these are my choices:

- Canon 135L 2.0 ( to expensive)
- Canon 85 1.8
- Sigma 35 1.4
- Sigma 85 1.4 (mixed feelings)
- Canon 35L 1.4 ( to expensive)
-Canon 100L macro 2.8
- Canon 40 2.8 pancake

Or maybe the budget L lenses the 17-40L or 70-200 f4

Please help im a bit lost

thank you
