How long are the current lens instant rebates slated to last?

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure what lens I can get before the rebates currently running end.
Are these slated to run through the end of Dec 2012? Think they'll extend into 2013?

I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on the 70-200mm L USM IS II....at $2099, minus almost $500 I have in rewards dollars from Crutchfield (from what I bought the 5D3)...this is gonna be a sweet deal....but wondering when the instant rebate ends....

Thanks in advance,

cayenne

or do you guys believe it will go lower than that during the thanksgiving or holiday sales?

Any advice/insight would be greatly appreciated. This is my first full frame camera and excited to pull the trigger.

Q: A dedicated Still Image DSLR without video? Thoughts?

This is a purely hypothetical question but I'm guessing many of you have thought about it once or twice.

I'm curious if anyone else would consider a DSLR designed, dedicated and optimized solely for still photography worthwhile / desirable?

Quite simply: If you could get better still images from a camera without video, would you buy it?

- Would you buy it instead of a hybrid model with video features if it produced better still images?
- Would you buy it if the images were the same but it was designed differently for still photography use?

Does anyone else think compromises might exist in hybrid DSLR designs in order to offer HD video on the same sensor?

- Would a sensor designed for dedicated still photography perhaps offer better specs, IQ, sensitivity, speed, [insert other perceived benefit here]?
- How much better would a dedicated still photography camera perform if it didn't have to produce video as well?
- Would the CPU, processing and firmware possibly be less complex, more efficient and stable?
- Would the control layout and ergonomics, menus, etc be easier to use and offer more versatility and/or control?
- Is it possible that video features have delayed R&D while engineers work out new challenges due to the hybrid designs?
- Do you think video increases the price of the camera? Is it logical to think a dedicated still camera might cost slightly less while still offering better images?

Just thought I would throw it out there to chew on. Might make an interesting discussion. Thanks for your time.

Upgrade advice: 6D or 5D2/3?

Okay, so I know there's been a lot of topics like this recently but I believe that advice might differ from one person to another. So here goes...

First of all, I would like to emphasize that photography is strictly a hobby (although it does come in handy with my image processing research from time to time). My previous system was a 60D with the following lenses: EF-S 15-85, EF 50/1.4, Tamron 70-300 VC USD. The body and the 15-85 lens have already been sold to facilitate the move to FF.

For my type of photography, I enjoy doing landscapes, macro (although I use an extension tube for budget reasons), portraits (still subjects mostly... and my pet dogs!), and general travel photography.

So here's the thing. I understand that the 5D3 is by far superior in terms of AF functionality. With my 60D, I've had no problems dealing with focus though. Sure, I have a hard time tracking my running dogs and focusing spot on when there's fast motion but is that really just the difference? To give you an idea of what I've shot, here's some samples:

http://500px.com/nightsky87

Is there anything wrong with the focus on those?

On the other hand, the 6D has the WiFi functionality and low light focusing capability as well as UHS-I support for much less. So, so far I'm leaning towards that. It seems to have a similar AF as the 60D and even the controls! Before anyone says anything, I find the remote control/monitoring capability of the 60D (with a USB cable and my Nexus 7 tablet) great especially for my research work.

Finally, there's the good ol' 5D2. Is there really any reason to go for it instead of the 6D? Again I'll say this before anyone complains, I know there have been little reviews on the 6D but most seem to say that the AF system works fast so that might be good for me. So lets just work with what we know at least?

So basically, any other insights might help. Anyone? :)

Help!! 17 TS-E vs 16-35 II vs 17-40 vs 14II vs. Tokina 16-28 2.8 for Landscapes

Hi everyone!

So I am leaving in 24 hours! to go to Washington and Portland OR. I shoot with the 5d mark II. I went nuts and bought the 17 TS-E, the 17-40 and 16-35 II and I am trying to decide which ones to keep and take along with me on the trip.

I am not experienced with TS-E but understand the main concepts and like how sharp they appear to be in the corners vs the zooms. I shoot with a Tripod and don't mind the lack of AF (but would prefer to have it!)

I like that the 16-35 is f/2.8 but I don't know if the image quality is enough to justify the price. and obviously the 17-40 is the budget friendly choice and can use my 77mm screw on filters (BW 10 stop ND and CPL)

I also ordered the Tokina 16-28 2.8 on sale for $750, but I have not tested it yet. The reviews I read seem to agree that it is at least as sharp as the 16-35II but is heavier and can not take filters.

I do not have have the 14II but have shot with the Rokinon 14 and know that the canon 14II is better all around and has auto focus to boot. My only concern with the 14 is that the ultra wide perspective can get old. Plus with the TS-E I can stich together shoot for really wide FOV.

So, with all that said, I turn to the opinions and expertise of the CR community for help. Just keep in mind I only have 24 hours to decide!!!

Thanks in advance for your responses.

<strong>Firmware Coming?

</strong>There has been a lot of questions wondering when Canon will release a firmware update similar to the EOS-1D X that adds the blinking red AF point when in AI servo mode. While I figured they were working on it, I wasn’t quite sure why it hadn’t been brought to market or included with the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2012/10/canon-eos-5d-mark-iii-firmware-adds-hdmi-af-upgrades/" target="_blank">announced and upcoming firmware update</a>.</p>
<p>This is a direct quote of what I have been told:</p>
<blockquote><p>They are testing that at the moment but don’t know if it is possible to implement. The former system had a different type of focusing screen and it was easy to handle because it had no reflection in the viewfinder. The new system, with the LCD screen inside the viewfinder is reflecting the red light back and this can affect the light metering system. In the EOS-1D X, the viewfinder box is bigger than in EOS 5D Mark III, which aids in making it possible and workable. In the EOS-1D X they alternate red illumination and metering, and this is why there is the red blinking. With the EOS 5D Mark III, they are testing it but they are not sure if they can make it operate in the same way.</p></blockquote>
<p>This sounds logical enough, and it’s good to know they are trying to implement it.</p>

Will the release of the 6D affect the 5D MkIII's price?

OK, so apologies for banging on this line a bit on previous threads, but 2K+ is a lot of money to cough up!

That said, the 5D MkIII is currently at the £2300-£2400 mark here in the UK. I have three options:

1. Buy at my favourite camera shop now at this price.
2. Order from HDEW (or Digitalrev/Pro Camera Store etc.) grey market for ~ £1950, saving a whopping £400.
3. Wait and see if Canon lower the price.

Option 1 basically guarantees me peace of mind with regard to problems, but I would be pretty p*ss*d off if Canon dropped their prices to the £2000 mark in a few weeks.

Option 2 insulates me against possible Canon UK price cuts, but leaves me bitten by the paranoia bug!

Option 3 leaves me without a 5D MkIII and with no guarantee of getting one any cheaper.

What's anyone else's take on this; is the release of the 6D likely to affect the 5D MkIII's price (either up or down), should I be more worried about the strength of the Pound/Euro versus the Yen? Or am I overthinking this sh*t to the point where I am starting to lose my marbles? :-\ :-\ :-\

Camera Servicing

I am in a bit of a pickle, for the last 18months I have been living and working in Uganda, but am from the UK. its very very very dusty here, and my camera is getting a little dirty (tho not the sensor thankfully) I have also been having the old "Cannot Communicate with Battery Error" every now and again which seems to be a common issue with the 7D. My girlfriends going back to the UK for about 3 weeks over christmas and was tempted to send my camera with her to get it services, my only issue is as much as i look after it, keep it in pelican cases and try and keep it away from the dust, its soo SOOO SOOOOOO dusty here I feel it might just go back to the point it was when i sent it in, in a short period of time. I will be moving back sadly in Sept 13, so the real question is should I wait till then or would it be a good idea to get it done before.

The Cannot connect to battery error has disappeared now, for the second time so thats not causing a issue any more.

also, does any one know any good value service centres in the UK where I should send it to?

Rich

I hope this post made sense!

100 f/2.8L or 135mm f/2L

Hi Everybody,

I'm looking into getting a 100 f/2.8L or 135mm f/2L, to do some portrait/ macro work. I won't be using the Macro a ton, but would like the feature. As of today, my budget only allows for one or the other, so I could use your help in deciding between the two.

Right now, I'm using a 24-70 f/2.8L Mark I, and a 50mm 1.4 on a 50D Body.

Recommendations?

DUST!!!!!!! WHAT TO DO!?!?!? (resolved)

I am doing my best to keep my cool. I have dust in the viewfinder, at least I think that is where the beast lay. I didn't notice it until I was wiping down my camera with a lens cloth and decided to wipe the dust off of the viewfinder glass. Now everytime I look into the viewfinder I can see two spots, one; a j-looking object next to the center focus point, and two; a spot just a bit lower and to the right. The dust doesn't seem to affect the pictures what-so-ever, but I am super OCD about these things and besides that, the specks are simply annoying. I have three shoots in the next four days so I would LOVE it if you all had some advice.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

-Tabor

It is on/in my 5DII with a 17-40L that has a filter, (if that makes any difference). Also, I've been shooting all day and this has not come up until the moment I wiped off the viewfinder... :'(

Advice for potential rate/releases

So, I've been doing some live band photography for a while, a ton of one particular artist whom I love her music, and she got me in touch with a DJ which I got some shots, and he's looking to pay me for the full res shots (already offered what I consider a reasonable amount). He also has links within the music industry with some bands, and possibly send me some more work. Yay!

However, I need to define my rates, rather than just play it by ear. Here's what I was thinking of telling him, for me to start at. What do you guys thing? Am I giving too much away in terms of releases?

I was thinking $70 for 45-75 minute performance (plus any venue fees, if required), which includes delivering non-watermarked 7-15 web size (1200px long edge like I gave you) images, and up to 3 full resolution images of any of the delivered images with full release other than a credit requirement for things like magazines/album covers/social media/etc. Additional full resolution would be $15 per image with the same releases.

135mm L

Question:

I have a pretty decent array of lenses and prefer to shoot with primes. I am covered on the wide end with primes, but for longer focal lengths I end up using my 70-200 IS II. I have the 85 1.2 and LOVE it, but I was looking through Lightroom EXIF data and realized I do a ton of shooting in the 120-155mm range with the 70-200.

I really like tight face shots, and I like the bokeh of the 85 1.2. For those that have both the 70-200 and the 135 f/2 would you say it's worth getting the prime? I see people here talking about how much they LOVE their 135 and I see some of the shots and they look fantastic, but I often wonder if they have the 70-200 or not and which would they use if they had to choose.

Anyone have any thoughts? The price on the 135 is one of the more reasonably priced primes and I can't decide if it's a MUST have or if if would be something that gathers dust.

Any chance of 1D IV and 600EX compatibility in the future?

Wondering if there is any chance Canon will make a firmware update for the 1D IV so they can use the group function with the new 600EX flashes? I know Canon doesn't want to do this for all their cameras, but doesn't it seem like they should give pros who have invested in 1 series cameras as new as the Mark IV this update? Thoughts?

Best Lens for photographing children

Hi folks,

What is the best lens to take photos of toddlers and moving babies. With just borns it is easy - My 100MM macro works perfectly (f2.8). just born don't move much and the speed of focus is fast enough.

This weekend i was taking photos of children at a birthday party (friends party and i was just a guest playing with my camera) and found that i like the separation of the 100 mm macro, but the speed of focus was not enough. I took out my 24-70 and found the focus OK but the separation wasn't there. I also felt that the 100 mm was just a tad too long for the space i had at the party.

I was first thinking 85mm F1.2, but then realized that the focus speed is too slow. So my question on what is best?

I also have a 70-200 zoom, but that just scares the kids and I can't run around the place as easily with the monster zoom :)

First 6D review up - does [KR] read [CR] ?

If you enjoy a good laugh, check out what pops up when you google "canon 6d review" - it's the busy bee "Mr. JPEG" Ken R0ckwell (if that guy exists at all and isn't a front for a clever team) that knows how search engines work, so no "hands on" here though it really is a "no hands on" review:

www. kenrockwell. com/canon/6d.htm
www. kenrockwell. com/canon/6d/vs-5d-mark-iii.htm

Actually he has a point when he states that the specs of the 6d are made to upsell the 5d3 to "rich people". But he seems to read this site because he enjoys contradicting some things that are eternal common knowledge here, so esp. the 5d vs 6d is worth checking out :-> ... just that the 5d isn't $3500 anymore, but he didn't notice that.

The 6D has a simpler AF system. You may prefer either; gearheads will prefer the 5D Mark III.
The Canon 6D adds an eight-way up/down/left/right control to the big rear control dial, and thus eliminates the need for the old thumb nubbin.
Top shutter and sync speeds are the same. No one uses 1/4,000, much less 1/8,000, so the 5D Mark III having 1/8,000 makes no difference in actual shooting.
Yes, there are many minor differences in the sensors and shutters as I'll outline below, but these are designed merely to help upsell innocent rich amateurs to the 5D Mark III; they aren't different enough for a real photographer or someone without a spare $1,400 lying around to blow on camera bodies to worry about.

Birds in the neighborhood park --- Green Bee Eater

These days I find these Green Bee Eaters in plenty.

The Green Bee-eater (Merops orientalis) (sometimes Little Green Bee-eater) is a near passerine bird in the bee-eater family. It is resident but prone to seasonal movements and is found widely distributed across sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal and The Gambia to Ethiopia, the Nile valley, western Arabia and Asia through India to Vietnam.[2] They are mainly insect eaters and they are found in grassland, thin scrub and forest often quite far from water. Several regional plumage variations are known and several subspecies have been named.

5D3 lens correction profiles - only jpg?

Hello thar!

I did not use the lens correction built into the camera for now, but I have a question. Does it only apply to pics shot in jpg or also in RAW? I know that you can edit Raws directly on the camera regarding vignetting n stuff, could I also use the profiles of the lens correction for that or is it done manually?

Or in other words, does the lens correction do ANYTHING if i only shoot in raw?

Conversion to Nikon

I'm not much impressed by all the doom and gloom some people talk about Canon on this site. My view is if they really think what they say on here they would be best going out and using what ever it is they think is so fantastic. It would be a lot less stresfull for them.

Having said that I will soon be a Nikon user. My 1Dx is such a great camera it has taken a picture that won me first prize in a national competition, well its in a national paper anyway :), and the first prize is a Nikon.

Well I'll be happily getting the best I can out of that camera now, accepting it for what it is and enjoying my hobby.
