Help me, 5D Mark iii order now or wait for a "possible deal"

I am seriously sitting here ready to pull the trigger and order my 5D Mark iii. I have L glass and currently shoot with a T4i. I do just fine with my camera and LR4, but know that the FF be a better choice, especially for my indoor event photography. If I was ready to order this last month or the month before, i wouldn't be worried about anything, but this close to Nov, I have to wonder if I am going to be angry with myself for missing the next 2750.00 type sale. Typically, do these sales begin early Nov or closer to black Friday/X-Mas? If B and H only drops this camera by 100 or so, I won't care, but saving almost 800 bucks had I waited 2-3 weeks would def make me regretful. I know it shows a 5D3 in my profile, but I had planned on having it by this week...LOL Everything else in my profile I own now.

need help with a lens decision

Currently I own a 24L II, 50L and 70-200mm L IS II. I have barely ever touched the 24L as was thinking about selling both the 24L and 50L and buying a 24-70 II. What do you guys think? I do both video and stills and a lot of the times I would like to just have the flexibility of a zoom. Plus I could always pick up a rokinon cine 35 and 85 for the times I do video? What do you guys think ? This is on full frame btw

Phones better then Canons Compact Cameras

at least in DXO´s video benchmark.....

http://3.static.img-dpreview.com/files/news/2670692826/DxO.png?v=1702

so when canon cameras have such bad sensors.... why not including a phone and make them worth the money? ;D

GPS and WIFI is already there.... touchscreen from the 650D.... and finished is the 6D MK2 with included mobile phone..... hey i might even buy one then..... :)

would i gain any write speed from fast CF on an old 5Dc?

currently using Sandisk Ultra (probably their slowest card now :-\ ) on my 5D1.

i find this combo to be very slow for writing speed (don't really care for reading speed).

and seeing these Extreme (not Extreme Pro) CF cards goes for $35 for 8GB at B&H, wondering if running one of these faster CF would benefit me at all? or is it limited by my buffer? which seems to be small?

I shoot Jpeg most of the time now becoz of this, shooting Raw is really lagging.

i assume the 5d2 and 5d3 has larger buffer, wondering what user with older Canon body like mine are using and want to hear their experience.

Thanks!

Calibrate Canon 24-70L?

I just wanted to know how I can calibrate the AF of my Canon 24-70L when mounted on a Canon 60D. Since there is no AFMA in the 60D does that mean my only resolution is to send it to Canon and have them take a look at it? Also, I dont know if its really an AF issue, it's known to be soft at f2.8 but when set to f5.6 or above it starts to become sharper but still not quite as sharp as I was hoping an expensive lens like this to be. Is this really a known property of this lens? You know, being a little soft. :(

Which lenses for cricket?

Hi everybody.

This is my first post although i have been a frequent visitor for some time and the knowledge i have gained in doing so has been invaluable.
The trouble is stalking other peoples threads won't always yield the answer required. So this is my first question and I'm a little nervous, i've never been very good at public speaking.

70-300L + 135L/200L or 300L IS + 70-200 f4 non IS

Both combinations give similar flexibility in different packages for a similar price. The reason I want the reach of 300mm is for local cricket matches. Although it probably won't be long enough they are the longest lenses i can afford that retain IS.
I currently own the 75-300 III (came as part of the kit with my 550d/t2) and it is impossible to hand hold at 300mm so IS will come in handy even though I'll propbably drag my tripod along anyway.

The 70-300L by all reports is a very good lens the only draw back on a crop camera being the variable apperture which will be 5.6 at 300mm - where most of the shots will be. Which is why i've included either the 135L or the 200L to compensate for low light-action-stopping goodness.

The 300L IS gets me an extra stop of light at 300mm but it leaves me at 300mm. So the 70-200 is included for a bit of flexibility.

My other lenses include the 18-55 kit lens, 10-22, 100L IS macro (the reason for me needing to upgrade my other lenses) and the 50 1.4

So..... if there is anyone out there who has shot any cricket (or other sports that are similar) can you point me in the right direction. Or am I completely wrong in thinking that any of these lenses will be long enough keeping in mind that is is just the local Tasman Peninsular cricket association so i could probably just walk onto the ground if I'm not close enoough.

P.S. The Tasman peninsula is also one of the most scenic areas in Tasmania (Australia) so there will be plenty of other photo opportunities if the cricket sucks.

What lens should I use at my first Fashion Show?

Hi everyone, I have my first fashion show shoot this Thursday and I am wondering what lens should I use and what settings?

The body that I have is: Canon t3i

Lenses:
Canon EFS 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8
Canon EFS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II
Canon EF 85mm USM f/1.8

Flash:
Canon 430exII

Accessories:
Monopod

Battery Grip

I am wondering what settings to use?

I have been told to keep the Shutter speed between 1/200-500, F/stop 2.8-4.0,AI servo, spot metering, and Iso no more than 800 due to the noise and because the t3i does not do well in low light.

I am not sure if I will be allowed to use a flash.

Any suggestions and tips.

Ruined photo, or rescue opportunity?

Hello I recently shot a wedding and during the group photos it became rather rushed as I was given a very short amount of time to set up for my shots. During the chaos and confusion I think one of my flashes malfunctioned or simply turned off, here is the resulting photo. My question, is this photo ruined or is there a way to rescue it? The shadows on a few faces is what is in question if you didn't notice right away :( Hopefully this isn't a huge fail on my part! Thank you everyone!

The choir is about 50 kids and the director wants the something different than the typical riser shots, anyone got any ideas on large group shots? Thank you in advance to potential replies!

Is 5D3 video not 'true' 24fps? FCPX shows it as 23.95....??

Hello all,

Can someone help my confusion. I have my Canon 5D3 set to 24 fps.

I have imported it directly into FCPX...and happened to notice when trying a bit of light color grading...in the effects area, it had been checked convert from 23.95 to 24 fps.

When I imported..I was paused and puzzled a bit, in the import which asked if I wanted to import based on the first frame....it wasn't 24fps...I had to manually set that, but I didn't think much about it.

Anyway, have verified in my camera, video has been set to 24fps...and hasn't ever been changed from that since I bought the camera and made the setting.

I thought I'd read that this was a problem on the old 5D2's, before firmware upgrade...but I'd not have thought it would be anything to worry about on the 5D3...

Can someone help me know what I'm doing wrong or seeing/Setting wrong?

Thanks in advance,

cayenne

G15 and RAW files - grrrr

Well, Canon has dropped the ball. You can shoot RAW with the G15, bring them into ImageBrowser EX, try to open them in DPP, but no go on any edits of any type. It's a format that DPP sees as RAW but cannot display or edit. Of course, Adobe isn't ready for these yet, and who knows when. I've verified this on 2 windows boxes, mac to follow.

How can Canon sell a camera that you cannot work with the files? Don't tell me to use the JPEGS, I would have just stuck with a crappy P&S. The hope that f1.8 and the return of macro capability are what sold the camera to me.

Grrr. Actually, double grrr to you Canon.

5D3 and M/F lenses: please share your experiences

Hi all,
I would like to hear some first-hand experiences from people using a 5D3 and M/F lenses. They can be Canon, 3rd-party or adapted vintage pieces. I am of course particularly interested in shooting at very wide apertures - let's say f/2 as a minimum - and in knowing how precise focus confirmation is without a dedicated screen - like the EG-S.

To be clear, I mean shooting looking through the viewfinder and using the focus points, not in live-view mode.

Thanks in advance for any comment :)

Canon should change name to Coma

I never noticed this on crop bodies but full frame it seems everything that is Canon can be expected to have coma issues. I read about it on the Canon 24 F1.4 before I bought one and kinda just tried to ignore it away and bought anyway. Then I used it on the Milky Way and holy crap. Looking back at a 14mm Canon I had rented with a 5D III it does it too. The Canon 50mm F1.4 I just got...bad at it too. The Samyang 14mm......nada. Here are some interesting comparisons from lenstip which tests for this.

Sure the Samyang 24 has plenty but nothing like the Canon.

I'm assuming the Sigma is on a crop frame but I don't really know. The point is look at the Canon full frame again.

It's crazy if you use these for the night sky just how badly the outer stars have wings and on the Canon 24 especially it's hardly even outer. The stuff extends way in from the corners. It's kinda annoying you spend such a price tag on these canon lenses, meanwhile apparently ol Samyang can handle it better. I wonder what any answer would be for this, surely has to be some reasoning they have so much coma while far cheaper lens can have the same fast aperture build and a huge amount less of the stuff. Having some buyers remorse as I go full frame and try to build up the lens collection for it lol(cause a lot of what I shoot is at night with stars). You stop the 24 down to F2.8 and you still have huge wings on the stars. Last night's images from the 50 I thought I was safe stopping down to F2 but yeah huge wings on the stars as well. What I had hoped would be fun fast wide lenses at night on the full frame are kinda big let downs for that.

Here is a reference image...

Canon 24mm at F1.6....but F2.8 isn't greatly changed.

Canon 50mm at F2 last night.

I need to stop shooting crap with stars for a while that much is for sure lol. But for sure should have gone Sigma 50. I'm not sure on the Samyang 24 vs Canon 24 since other than night sky stars and other points of lights in the corners, that Canon will be better. I guess it's mostly just annoying the fact you pay so much more money to Canon for something the others like Samyang have under control while it's utter ass on Canon. It's almost like you pay that extra money, like $1600 for a Canon 24mm, to have a built in "effects" filter to give huge wings to points of light. But yeah Canon smokes it in more open resolution and don't become more even till F5.6. Guessing wide open at night the Samyang 24 lesser open resolution would be annoying in its own right. But for sure need to come up with some lens for night sky photography that doesn't have these huge ass point of light wings and is a fast lens. Swapping canon 50 F1.4 for the Sigma would probably be a start.

Pointless rant over. Figure maybe some shopping for a night sky lens might find that coma tid bit useful. It's a pretty darn apparent image issue one can expect. I'd rather just see some really heavy color fringing out there on stars than huge wings.

70-300L or 100-400L

I shoot with both a 7D and a 5DMkiii. I currently have a 70-300mm f4.5 - 5.6 DO IS USM, and am wondering if I should upgrade it to a 70-300mm f4.0 - 5.6 L IS USM or the 100 - 400mm. I have found the current lens a little soft on both bodies, certainly when compared to my 24-105L and even my 15-85 EFS.

The 100-400 has the attraction of an extra 100mm, but then it is a much older lens. My main use for this historically has been bird photography, and therefore it is better on the 7D. Can anyone comment?

Thanks

Richard

Powershot Perils

.
The convenience of the Powershot line is hard to overestimate. With the S95, etc., you can put a lot of photography power in your pocket. Unfortunately, those great little cameras can also be easy to lose, misplace, overlook, etc.

Last Saturday I went out on an all-day imaging spree, doing several events and some general street/transit stuff. DSLR in hand, and lenses, batteries, memory cards, etc. in a bag -- and my S95 in my pants pocket. When I got home, my S95 did not come home with me. So, I spent a couple of days calling event organizers, police departments, etc. I also began pondering if there is a Sony RX100 in my future. (That should give Canon pause.)

This morning I got a call from a transit agency. One of their police officers found my camera in a train station and turned it in as found. Reunion is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

It can happen to you! I was extremely fortunate; I really did not expect to ever see the camera again. I also found I was not as prepared as I should have been. Insurance is the obvious first possibility, but that's got drawbacks, not the least of which is a deductible that may not leave much coverage with the lower values of Powershots.

Somewhere I probably have the camera's serial number, but I'd have to do a lot of searching, and I might not have it around here. I had registered it with Canon though, so the serial number is there -- huge help in documenting it with police in recovery.

Anyway, just a word to think ahead a bit. If you've got a Powershot in your pocket, be ready one day to arrive home without it. As the Boy Scouts say, be prepared.

DxOMark vs. Reality

There are lots of posts about DxOMark, lots of support, lots of bashing, some of it fact-based, much of it hearsay and knee-jerk reaction. There are many posts about sales figures, generally fewer than about DxOMark, and generally with even less of them with real facts.

So...let's do a little reality check, about the past 5 years in DxOMark-land and the past 5 years in the real world.

The year is 2007. Nikon has the D3 as a flagship and the D300 as the prosumer APS-C body. Canon has the 1DsIII and D40, respectively. DxOMark scores the D3 as 81, the 1DsIII as 80 - a meaningless difference, by their standards. The D300 scores a 67, while the 40D scores a 64 - that is starting to look like a real difference.

2008 saw Nikon enter the 'affordable' FF market with the D700, which DxOMark scores an insignificant 1 point higher than Canon's 5DII at 80 vs. 79. 2009 had updates to the high-end prosumer APS-C segment, and Nikon's D300S scores a 70, while Canon's 7D scores a 66. 2010 brought us mid-range APS-C updates, and while the 60D with the 7D's sensor scores a 66, the D7000 scores an 80, beating Canon's then-current FF sensors.

This year, the somewhat-less-affordable FF battle continues, with the 5DIII scoring 81, barely better than it's predecessor, while the D800/E scores a very impressive 95/96, soundly beating all Canon cameras as well as every other sensor DxOMark has ever tested, including medium format bodies with sensors with 2.5-times larger sensors.

So, it seems quite clear that over the past 5 years in DxOMark-land, Nikon has been dramatically improving, Canon has been stagnating, and Nikon is way ahead. But that's DxOMark-land. What about the real world?

Canon and Nikon are publicly traded companies, and as such, they publish their annual and quarterly reports (in the Investor Relations sections of their corporate websites). IDC (a market analysis firm) also publishes annual summaries of the market as a whole.

In 2007, Canon had 43% of the dSLR market, Nikon had 40%. In 2010, Canon had 44.5% of the dSLR market, Nikon had 29.8%. So, over years while Nikon was bringing us better sensors than Canon, Nikon was losing market share while Canon was gaining it. Ok, fine, but that's 2010. What about this year?

In 2Q2012 (by calendar year, they report it as 1QFY2013), Nikon had an 18% y/y growth of unit sales of dSLRs and lenses. In 2Q2012, (they report by CY, not FY), Canon had a 47% y/y growth of unit sales of dSLRs and lenses.

So, DxOMark has said Nikon has had better sensors for years, and the sales data show that Canon has sold more dSLRs and lenses for those same years, and continues to do so, as of the most recent data available. The straightforward conclusion from the above is that while DxOMark's Scores have a huge impact on the number of inflammatory posts on Internet discussion boards, they have no meaningful impact on the real world aggregate buying decisions of consumers.

Need your Samyang/Rokinon/Bower/Walimex 35mm 1.4 experiences!

Hi there,

im seriously considering getting the Samyang/Rokinon/Walimex 35mm 1.4 lens since the Canon L lenses are too pricy for me yet i still want really good image quality. Greedy me...

Anyway what are your experiences with the Samyang 35mm 1.4 without using live view! I plan to use it solely with the viewfinder cuz liveview is just too slow for my needs. In my experience if i wanna take a portrait even my friends become somewhat nervous and "camera shy" so i wanna be quick when focussing.

Im mostly running around with m42 manual focus lenses on my APS-C so i imagine it cant be that much different having the Samyang but my fastest m42 35mm lens is just f/2.8
