What is UDMA 7?
Answer:
UDMA 7, which stands for Ultra Direct Mode Access 7, is the latest transfer mode under the UDMA interface. UDMA 7 allows a maximum transfer rate of up to 167MB/sec. This can be compared to the previous UDMA mode, UDMA 6, which allowed transfer rates of up to 133MB/sec.

So even Lexar is leaving room for a faster card by having a 150mb/s card instead of a 167 mb/s card. Sandisk is lagging behind a bit offering a max speed of 100 mb/s.

Theres a bunch of Canon Firmware updates to bring cameras up to udma 7 spec. 50d,5dm2,7d,1dm4, and prob others. I included links but they are not direct to them all sorry. If you have any of these cameras i would def get the update. I wish i could get one for my 1dm3...

As a professional photographer, many of my travels take me overseas to remote and often desolate 3rd world countries. Places where GPS data in the metadata would be very, VERY nice.

Since I started shooting with my first Canon DSLR, the 10D, I thought with each revision, THIS TIME, canon will put the GPS receiver IN the camera, rather than a hot she mount that is big, expensive, cumbersome and not realistic to keep on the camera device. So here we are, a dozen cameras later, at the 5D3, and the best we have is a $270 GPS receiver?

My thoughts... GPS Receivers are wicked small, incredibly efficient, and present in just about every single handheld device we carry. From a financial and business perspective, I cant imagine that Canon actually sells too many of these external GPS units. Who wants to pay for this cumbersome thing? Instead, Canon should put this modern GPS technology directly into the camera body itself. Marketing a new DSLR with "GPS Receiver built in!!!" would be far more attractive to buyers, and end up selling far more camera bodies, and ultimately make more money that trying to sell an external unit. Even if they were to mark the cost of each body up by $5 (the cost of a VERY good GPS unit, the kind we find in iPhone4) They would make more money than trying to sell this GP-E2!

I am a little frustrated that we are this far with technology with no Built in GPS. Id like your opinions!

I need to get my focus point to always be displayed in red like my 1dm3. Its a pain to have to hit the focus point grid just to see if i have the right focus point on the subject when its dark.

I also want to have custom flash settings for my custom settings, that is not allowed as yet. I have one settings that i want only low light and disable the flash but have my flash assist beam from my flash helping to lock focus.

Also I'd like the ability to save all my custom settings to a card so if i have a second 5dm3 i can just load them in.

Im sure i am forgetting a couple but of all of them the flash settings would prob least likely be done by Canon but i hope i am wrong.

My 5D MkIII can not archive focus on subject that has solid color with light distributed evenly on the surface. example the walls, i tried this on all my walls with different colors, green, coffee, white, the test i did was during the day, with enough light.
my pink cabinet, powered off monitor screen, etc.

I must move the focus point to some place that have color difference like edges in order to achieve focus.

my 60D is more successfully achieving focus on these situations on the monitor screen and pink cabinet.

is it the same with your camera?

Looks like both Sony and Canon will be making huge splashes at NBA 2012 this year!

Sony coming out w/ 4k camera at 8k, meaning that the 4k DSLR will fall into that price range to rival it!

So we have Sony, Canon, and RED w/ 4k cameras in the 8k to 10k price range.

I already had an idea that the 4K DSLR would be priced in the upper 7k to 10k range but part of me was hoping that it would drop down to the 4k-5k range so that I could get a camera to upgrade my video feature from the Mark II, but this recent announcement by Sony just pretty much confirmed that the 4k DSLR will drop in the 7k to 10k price range!

At this point it seems the only way that Canon can differentiate their 4k camera from Sony's 4k and RED's 4k camera is by having that hybrid functionality of video and photo in which the 4k DSLR will have the picture features of either a 5D Mark III or what seems to be more likely the picture features of a 1Dx.

Maybe w/ this shift toward 4k resolution this could be price drops in the FS100?

I am struggling a little bit to adapt to the lack of the visial focus confirmation on the 5D Mk iii. Okay, it does exist - in the bottom right corner of the viewfinder but it isn;t obvious and requires a very deliberate movement of the eye to look at it. This wasts time and slows things down, IMO.

I pretty much use the centre focus point for 99% of the time. On the Mk i and Mk ii, regardless of the ambient light levels, the focus point always momentarily flashes the instant focus is achieved. Since I shoot wedding I turn the audible focus confirmation off. This little flash of the focus point gives me the confidence to know that focus has been achieved. No more wondering.

But on the Mk iii this only happens in low light. In medium to brighter conditions, unless you waste half to one second to take your eye off your composition and check the tiny focus confirmation icon on the bottom right corner, you do not know that the camera has achieved focus on the subject.

I wish they would make a firmware update to add this to a menu item and make it an optional visual focus confirmation - either as it is (low light only), or to always give the little blip of the focus point.

Have been reading up on D800 and 5D3's user manuals...
Gosh, Nikon's new face-detect technology inside the viewfinder is awesome!
Not only does the face detection works with
high-speed phase focusing but it also works with exposure calculation based on the face alone!
In addition, it works with i-TTL too!! This is a paradigm changer for wedding photographers!

Implication is that when capturing any backlit portraits, there is no need for exposure compensation
if u turn on "face priority" in D800 or D4! This also helps bounced flash portrait photography immensely.
There is no need to "guess" the flash expo compensation and chimp anymore!! U get excellent focus
and decent exposure in the 1st shot!

Canon, do u realize this Nikon feature is going to kill us all Canon portrait photographers!
Please, Canon, I want this in the next Canon DSLR!

As if this is not threatening enough from Nikon, Sony's new Exmor backlit sensor used in D800 is
another game changer. It is not just another "better" tweaked CMOS sensor from a different manufacturer. It is
not a "tweak" of CMOS technology, it is another revolutionary technology by itself. It is like Nikon is using a gun to fight with Canon's sword. The ISO advantage of Exmor's backlit technology cannot be under-estimated.

Canon, please, hurry up! Perhaps licensing Sony's sensor technology is a fast stop-gap solution!

Very useful feature in my opinion, and not just for landscapes.

Current bodies: 5dm3 and 7d
Current lenses: 10-22, 50 1.4, 24-70L, 70-200 F4L, 70-200 F2.8L IS II

(The 2.8 IS II was a gift, that is why I have two in that focal range.)

So.
I'm thinking of:
selling the 10-22 and the 70-200 F4
buying the 17-40 F4L and the 85 1.8

I'm looking for feedback on if you guys think this is a good route to take or if you would do something different.
With the 5dm3 the 10-22 is limited to the 7Dd only.

I'll be shooting video with my new 5D III and I keep reading that I should double the frames per second
30p/25p/24p to get the proper shutter speed: 30p->1/60 25p->1/50(PAL) and 24p->1/50 (closest speed).

SO my question is why and that I might better understand, what is the logic behind this?

Shooting 1080/30p I find that shutter speeds over 1/60 look very Jittery and I know that that can be used as an effect or look. I guess I find 1/60 a little jittery as well, so I windup shooting at 1/30- am I making a mistake?

Is there an update yet so ACR/Bridge can read 5D3 RAW files? If not, any word as to when. Hate to think I just spent $3500 and can't even view the pictures (I only shoot RAW).

...First of all, I hope no one interprets my post as a flame-bait troll post, I write this as a current owner of both Nikon and Canon SLRs (film & digital). Let me explain how I arrived at my decision, after carefully considering and evaluating all the initial reviews and sample pictures I've seen from the D800 on the various websites. I have a feeling that the D800 would be like what I felt when I saw the pictures from a D200 and D2x, sure, both "tested" well if you read the reviews at that time for both cams, some even claimed then that the D200 noise & overall IQ was as good as that from a 30D, the crop IQ king at that time IIRC, while the D2x, according to those same reviewers, compared favorably with the 1DIIn & 5D even though it had a 1.5x crop sensor. I'm also one of those who thought that the Nikon D50 6MP CCD had better IQ than the D80, D40, D40x while others were pointing to charts & graphs to say otherwise. Anyway, I'm not saying the D800 sucks or what, nor am I saying that I'm getting the 5D3, since if money was no problem I'd only be choosing between the D4 & 1DX to be honest. But I'm also not one of those +2000 fill-lighters, +10EV digital exposure compensators, +20 luma/+20 chroma noise reduction slider-movers, or 800% pixel-peepers nor is my hobby cropping & resizing every damned picture that comes out of my camera , nor do I even shoot RAW all the time since I don't have the time to develop every single frame or tweak every setting just so to "maximize" the digital negative. Really, how many shots in a week do those "I only shoot RAW" guys make and do they have time for anything else? Most real pros I know don't even do that, and these are the guys that are so busy they don't even participate in online forums like this!

I hope no one bashes me for what I just said, I think I need to buy another lens or two instead of getting some other body. I'm still withholding judgement on the AA-cancelled D800E though. I'm currently shooting with a 5D2 & a pre-owned D300s I won on eBay. I have recently upgraded to full frame to a 5DMKII. The good news is that I can now shoot with my 24-70, 70-200 and 50 1.4 on the FF body and its been a very pleasant experience.

I have also sold my cropped body and my beloved cropped body wide angle lens. The sigma 8-16mm. Its lovily piece of kit. Sharp to the corners and gives nice colours. The only down side is that it is a bit slow at 4.5 and it is not FF.

Im looking for a full frame wide angle lens and have considered the 16-35 MKI and MKII. The MKII isnt perfect, and at this price, it is comparable to the much better 14-24mm from Nikon. I have heard that you are able to shoot with an adapter. Anyone can give any guidances what this adapter is and how much it costs.

I have been toying with the thought of getting the Nikon lens and shoot with manual focus. Be interesting to hear from anyone who has actually done this. I am buying this lens for a travel lens. So I will be shooting most of the time out and about everywhere, which means the AF would be really handy for fast shots.

Canon 50mm f/1.4 is normal quality. I want to get a new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM. What's your suggestion?

Hey everyone, I was wondering what would be better, to buy the 5D Mark III with the kit lens (limited budget), or 60D (or T3i/T4i) with some pro lenses such as 24-70, 70-200, and/or primes. I personally think the 5D is a better option although I won't have the best lens kit as I will only have the 24-105. What would you guys do?
