Just got my 5DIII, should i keep 60D?

I just spent my first night taking photos with my new 5D III. I don't care what anyone says, it's a wonderful camera. Specifically, i'm loving the silent shutter and the high iso performance. Those features plus the build quality are a huge improvement over my 60D.

That noted, i'm thinking that even though i'm not a pro photographer it might make sense for me to keep my 60D. For what i would get for selling it i think i'm better off using it to extend the range on my 70-200 2.8 ii.

In other words, won't i get better results with the 60D at 200mm than i would with the 5diii and a teleconverter (which i would have to buy if i sold the 60D)? If it's even close, i'd obviously prefer to have the flexibility of a backup camera and the fold out LCD for video.

Frequency/Patterns for Rebates? (or for Promo Codes)

Does anyone have a feel for how Canon generally runs its rebates? THere are a batch expiring on the 1st, but I suspect this will not be the last we see of rebates, right? When would we expect them to return? When they release all these new lenses they are talking about this year? For Christmas?

Also, are there ANY promo codes actually working right now for lenses? Either retail or direct from Canon??

Sony's rumored FS-700 and Canon C300 problems...tough day for Canon video

Canon lenses vs 3rd parties...

Hey Photo Folks,

I'm consider new to the photo community...well, at least most recently with intense regained interest. I bought a Rebel 4 yrs ago and used it just for lesiure. Recently, I just bought the 5D Mark II and got it w/the kit lens (24-105). I also have the 50mm 1.8, but is looking to increase my lenses. Should I buy mainly Canon L lenses or consider 3rd parties, such as Sigma and Tamron, etc.? Your inputs are much appreciated. Thanks.

5D mk III HDR samples.

I've seen some interest in HDR samples and comparisons of the different presets. I tested it out the other day. Here are some samples of the different looks you get from the presets.

Why no low ISO DSLRs?

In my film days I used to shoot Kodachrome 25 or 64, and low ISO Kodacolor, mostly landscapes. I liked the fine detail.

The threads always talk about high ISO and low noise, but, what about low ISO and no noise? I, and, probably others, are willing to use a tripod and shoot at low ISO.

But, then, my understanding of digital vs film is just beginning. I use a G11 and a 60D

5dIII vs 24-70 II

I have a 5d mark II and the 24-70I , given that the new 24-70II is so awesome and will be out soon would i be better off buying the updates lens instead? I really don't live at high iso settings, landscapes don't tend to run move around, and the center point is golden on my "antique" 5d mark II autofocus system. I am very happy with the color i get up to 1600, but i mostly shoot 100-800. I have a 1d mark III also, so with all that being said would a new 5d mark III really be better than a lens that can actually resolve 21 megapixels?

I'm planning either the Mk III or the Mk II. Getting tired of listening to all the rants from folks who don't have the camera, so thought I'd ask you owners if you're happy with it, as you're the ones who would know.

Is 5DIII softer than 5DII?

I received my 5DIII a couple of days ago, and haven't done extensive testing with it yet, but I plan on doing some studio shots tonight. I did notice in some of my high ISO comparisons that the 5DII seemed sharper in some instances. And yes, I was shooting RAW and used the LR ACR 6.7RC to do the conversion.

Then, while looking again at the DPReview comparison, looking at the RAW versions of that studio image they shot I'm noticing the same thing ( but I don't know what method they used ).

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Huge gap in Canon pro-sumer products

There is the aging 7d (summer 2009) at $1500 or less
Now there is the 5d3 at aobut $3500
and the 1dx at $7000 give or take

From what I have seen and read here there is nothing planned for a new 7d.
This means Canon has 2 new cameras that based on the high price will appeal to a
tiny percentage of the market. Don't get me wrong, they look amazing and will certainly
please those that have $4000+ to get into this high-end market.

With the economy not so rosy in the past years how can they ignore the sub $2000 market
where the masses are? I know they surely sell a lot of sub $400-600 rebels yet I cannot undestand
leaving out all of us advanced amateurs.

Yes, I could get a 7d but after having a 40d for almost 4yrs getting a camera as old as the 7d would
not be something I would do (and they are still expensive in my part of the world).
I shoot a lot of indoor sports and the 40d is not the best for this. I would like the 1d4 but it is still
way over my budget (I do not get paid). I am sure that a new 7d would have better IQ, better low light performance and perhaps even faster AF.

Rokinon lens; Are they worth playing with?

I just noticed bestbuy is carrying this brand of lenses, and they have some interesting sizes at cheap prices. I understand we can't be talking an extremely high quality lens, but for the small dollars, are they worth playing with if you want to try some extremes out..

Of particular curiosity are the 800mm f8 mirror for $200 (I always wanted one when they were more popular and never did get it) and the 8mm f3.5 Aspherical Fisheye for $300.

They also have an 85mm f1.4, but I think I really rather buy a Canon L version of that lens.

Can't decide if its a wast of dollars that could go towards a real lens, or a good way to try out certain focal lenths without a heavy investment.

HDR quirk?

so I'm planning to take pictures in the HDR mode for a job.
i was going to use this new separate CF and SD card thing to separate the raws from the jpegs(it only creates the HDR in jepgs which makes sense)
here is the issue:
when i try to do that, even if i choose raw only in the camera settings, on the CF card i get the raws and the jpeg HDR.ok.
but on the SD card i get 3 jpeg representing the raws, and the HDR jpeg.

but, when I'm in the same setting, except choose a standard method of saving the media, instead of separating to different cards, i get the 3 raws and the one jpeg on one cf card. 4 files, which is right. i have no idea why or how if i chose to separate the cards i get 3 more jpegs representing the raws on the sd card too.
weird.
i would just like the 3 raws to save to one card and the 1 HDR jpeg to save to the other.
is this how it is?
or am i doing something wrong?

5diii problem with touch wheel

I'm hoping that I'm just doing something wrong but I can't get the touch sensitive wheel to work in video mode. Silent control is turned on and I have tried in M and Av modes while recording video. I've tried touching every part of the wheel but nothing is changing. I'm really thinking there is a problem with the camera and wanted to see is anyone on here has any ideas????

</strong>I have heard from a couple of places that the Canon EOS-1D X may be delayed, yet again. The latest we’re hearing is that arrival of the camera body won’t be until June, 2012.</p>
<p>We’ve also heard allocation to stores is based on preorders from CPS members. In other words, CPS members will get to the front of the line for 1D X preorders. This may not be true in all countries, but it is in a couple I have confirmed.</p>
<p>This isn’t confirmed by Canon yet.</p>
