How reliable is the studio test on dpreview? 7D sharpest of them all.

Guys, if I compare the raw files of 5dIII, 5dII, D800 and 7D at any ISO and "zoom in" on the queen of hearts, the 7D is the best camera around. ;D.

OK, must be something like focal point I guess, but in a studio test the focal point could be (should be) the same if you take shots to compare hardware.

How come the black and red of the 5dII and the 7D on the Kodak card are similar and completely different from the black and red of the 5dIII and D800 (which are strangely enough similar too).

Sorry for being so ignorant, but can this be explained or is DPR not to be taken serious?

5D Mark III & Possible 1D X Issue With PocketWizards

Pocketwizards

I received the following report about PocketWizards and the 5D Mark III. I have not confirmed this myself.

Been using PW products for 8 years now. I currently have a Canon 1D Mark IV, which works great up to 1/800 at the studio with hyper sync, and preordered a 1D X. I just bought a Canon 5D III and won’t sync at shutter speeds higher than 1/160 using Mini TT1 and Paul C. Buff Einstein Flashes fitted with Poceket Wizard Power MC2′s. Any speeds higher than that, it will give u the dark band on the bottom of the frame.

I called Tech Support and they say it’s not compatible yet and although the 5D III should sync at at least 1/200, the actual speed of the shutter is lower (approx 1/160). They don’t even have a test camera yet and they expect the soon-to-be-released 1D X not to be compatible either. They will be working on a firmware update as soon as they have a 5DIII to work with.

5D Mark III - Can't Save Settings to Card

I have multiple 5D Mark III's (and multiple 1D Mark IV's).

Every day, I want to start the day with the same base camera configuration. If I make a change to the base configuration for my 1D Mark IV, I save the settings to the CF card and transfer them to the other bodies.

I find it hard to believe that the 5D Mark III provides no way to save configuration settings to the card or attached computer via EOS Utility. Canon CPS confirms this.

Am I missing something here? If you have multiple camera of the same type, shouldn't there be a way to transfer settings from one body to another?

Canon 200-400/1.4x vs. 600/4 II

This isn't really a vs. question as I am well aware of the utility of these two lenses. I have long wanted a telephoto and am thinking of finally saving for one. These two lenses are at the top of my list but as it will take me awhile to save up I really only have the possibility to buy one.

The following are the major uses I am planning:
- Bird and wildlife photography. I love to photography all types of birds. I also enjoy photographing mammals - though they are more difficult to come across.
- Zoo photography. For the most part these are the only mammals I often get to see other than squirrels.
- Sports. Both my sons love playing baseball.
- Travel. Once in awhile we travel somewhere interesting such as Peru or Africa. Although for this particular case rental is an option, it is nice to have something I am used to.

Note that I will be using these with a FF 5D3. I do own a 7d but will likely sell it soon.

First, I am aware that no one has had the opportunity to use either of these lenses, but let's assume they are both excellent optically and that the 200-400 is sharp even with the extender (for $11k it better be). Therefore it comes more down to utility.

What I really like about the 200-400/1.4x is the flexibility. It should make a great safari lens and zoo lens. For sports, the focal length is right where I need it. The zoom capability should also help greatly as kids run around the bases. The smaller size also makes this a very useful travel lens. I also like the presumed close focus distance (assuming it has specs similar to the Nikon 200-400). Occasionally I manage to get quite close to a bird and I enjoy taking closeup shots of leaves from a distance.

The main disadvantage of the 200-400/1.4x is the length. For most birds on a FF I would prefer more.

What I really like about the 600/4 II is the focal length. On my 7D, my 70-200/2.8 II + 2x III gives me an effective 640mm and it is barely enough. I would certainly love to go higher and the 600/4 II would give me an 840/5.6 that is still very sharp. I also like that the new model is much lighter - making it easier to deal with. Generally with birds I find the focal length I need is the max I can do, so the zoom isn't as useful.

The biggest disadvantages of the 600/4 are that the length is a bit too long for baseball (though as my kids get bigger I will be forced to stay further away) and it is heavier and more difficult to port around. The 200-400 is light enough that I may take it on trips where wildlife is not the main focus, but the 600/4 would like accompany me only on serious safaris. Of course, for safaris I can always rent the 600.

Still, most of my bird photography is not done on vacation but is done almost every day. My office is within walking distance of an area that has quite a few birds and I take walks there every day during lunch. Therefore, whichever lens I pick up will likely be used at least twice a week.

Therefore, I like the flexibility of the 200-400 but also like the length of the 600. Given my needs, which would you go for?

Your Mark III and settings.

So, I have a question. I've recently purchased and acquired my 5D Mark III and have moved on up in a massive leap of camera scale, both in price and quality and technological advancements. That and I've read more posts than I care to about people beating both sides of the stick of "It's GREAT!" and "It SUCKS!" and would like to know from those who have actually taken the time of day to read the manual or already know what they're doing, to know what settings you personally have taken to clarify your images if you felt it was needed.

Now, please don't take this as an "I'm wanting to ask and not read the manual myself" excuse- I actually intend to do so while I'm on a trip in Vegas this weekend all of Friday, Saturday and sometime Sunday, to leave the camera at home, take the manual and in my off gambling time (when I've lost more than I care to :P which may be constant and frequent) read up on the whole thing. My other thing is, yes- I tried to do a search but never found something that relevant without tons of Mark III/D800 flame comparisons etc.. so I felt pretty justified trying to create a helpful thread. Those disclaimers said, something I've found of use is what follows:

I found that specifically, at least with my kit lens and the one or less hour of shooting I did (without checking on a computer, mind you, just zooming in on the LCD), I found that the central auto focus did better when I changed the AF mode from Single Point AF (Possibly the default? I don't remember what it was before messing with it) to Single Point Spot AF. This seemed to help net some sharper images from what I could tell zoomed in, but I still have a lot of other settings to alter to suit my preferences and a load of new things to learn. For instance I never knew I could (and apparently I could do this on my 20D..) focus with the AF button on the back and set up the shutter button to only fire the shutter. Need to read up on how to do this- mainly because it makes so much more sense to me.

My only hopes in this topic are to shed some light on what some of those hidden gems are that some might not know about, specifically the crowd who are jumping into the more professional series of bodies from the prosumer cropped bodies which were less customizable (if that makes sense??). Basically (to clarify): What settings did you immediately set after prior Mark II knowledge or reading the manual or other experince when you picked up your Mark III and began to shoot with it to test it out?

I also intend to come back and post anything else I find useful like the Spot AF later when I have a little more time to. Cheers to all the useful commenters ;D and Boo to all the haters >:( (but I still love you, hehe, cause they complete the yang to the yins and often make for some amusing to read topics)

5D3 Autofocus System

I am a pretty technical person who holds an engineering degree. I am finding the autofocus system instructions in the 5D3 manual to be the bare minimum (which is expected in a manual) and they really don't help fill in the gaps on how / when to use specific modes. Given that I just paid a significant amount of money for this camera, I feel that if I don't fully understand the autofocus system, I am underutilizing my investment.

Are there any other resources out there (web / book) that will do a better job of teaching the focusing system?

Zeiss 50mm Manual focus decision time

So I'm looking to indulge on my manual focus fetish..
I'm debating between the Zeiss 50mm Planar and Makro-Planar. at this focal length I don't plan to do any actual macro work, but I'm seeing generally better reviews of the Makro-Planar and Dx0 has a profile. this will be just general carry around, maybe product photography or portraits/street on a crop body. So has anyone played with both? is there a reason, other than f-stop(which I'm reading that 1.4 on the Planar is kinda soft) and price to go with just the Planar as opposed to the Makro?

I'm also considering the Voigtlander Ultron 40mm.

This will hopefully be used as a nice 50-ish lens to compliment some decent wide zooms and be the only manual focus until I can get a tilt/shift (which I obviously won't use for walk-around). Not really interested in the canon 50's as I'm wanting something more nostalgic without resorting to adapters.

B&H Customer Service experience on 5DMKIII

well i just thought i would share with you, i pre ordered on the 3/2 10:40am, i wasn't in the first batch shipped last week. so i called everyday since friday to get an update, the feedback was possibly the week of 4/1, but more than likely after passover. so on tuesday i placed an order with Lensrental to cover shooting Wrestlemania to raise money for make a wish, and then cancelled my order with B&H, they were understanding of the situation. so today i went to fedex to pick up my rental, when i got home there was a door tag from Fedex?? I called fedex to see where it was from..........yeah B&H still shipped the camera last night. i never received any emails on shipping and i had already canceled the order, and now i have 2 5DMKIII , one rental and one from B&H that i cancelled. so i am a little let down that i got the rental, but more let down that I moved the funds from my checking account back to my savings once i cancelled. just thought i would share.

Canon smarter than we think

As the new 5DIII starts to appear in the real world I think I'm starting to get a better feel for Canon's strategy and, I must say, it seems pretty brilliant.

When Canon announced the 5DIII they placed a lot of emphasis in their announcement on the camera being the result of feedback from professional photographers. But, of course, "professional" is a very broad term that can cover a lot of very disparate specialties.

Now that we are seeing some examples of what the camera can do, it seems like they focused on one particular, but very large segment of the professional market – wedding and special event photographers.

Early examples seem to show a camera that performs very, very well at higher ISOs. Not necessarily in the stratosphere, but rather significant improvements in the 1600 to 6400 range. A range that I suspect many wedding photographers find themselves needing. The autofocus improvements, of course, benefit everyone, but event and wedding photographers don't get the chance to refocus their shots, so improved autofocus would certainly be beneficial.

At the same time, the camera is very well-equipped for ordinary studio work under controlled lighting situations. So, no compromises for studio work but more flexibility in the field. Not to mention some improvements in video for those who need to use it for that purpose as well.

Now, of course, the camera is great for other purposes as well, but it does seem to have some significant improvements that will benefit a large and very competitive segment of the professional photography market.

In short, what I am saying is that it seems as though Canon really did study their market closely and may have produced a camera that is intended to sell, rather than a camera that is intended to be popular on forum and testing sites.

This web site is making me question why I lurk here

As a long time lurker and recent active poster I continue to be shocked by the thrashing, whining and crying here regarding the real and imagined limitations of the 5D Mark III. If you read Nikon Rumors ( you should it is very informative and professional) nothing like that happened there with their two recent introductions and there were almost no catty attacks at Canon as you find regularly against Nikon and any firm that doesn't worship Canon properly or at the same time knock it down appropriately.

What I find most interesting is the crappy quality of 90% of the photos that these anxious obsessives have posted here to get feedback. I'm talking about crappy composition, worthless lighting, impossible focusing situations, horrible white balance and basically most norms of decent photography violated in the service of complaining, worrying or hand wringing. Much of this was just impulsive childish behavior - pure and simple. When you can't tell the trolls from the faithful things have gotten out of hand.

That all said, of course there are issues and the camera, as amazing as it is, did not meet all the expectations and there have been some surprises. How could it? There were compromises made along the way - ie. 22 vs 36 Megapixels - there would have been complaints either way. You can just make a list but from where I sit it is was mainly cup half empty or half full. I have played with two copies and I would love to have one!

I wonder what the reception would have been if it was priced $1,000 cheaper? Would it have been received with less anger and skepticism. Don't get me wrong. It is all not emotional but, I'm afraid, much of what is written here sounds like what a grammar school child that is waiting and waiting and waiting for a beanie baby would write. It could never meet all the needs once it was shipped from Amazon. Was the packing enough for my beanie baby? Should I have waited for another color? What is coming out next?

There is a lot of very worth while information also available here from very knowledgeable shooters but the nut cases and the unstable one are winning out. I have learned a great deal about Canon products and photography in general reading here. That is why I lurked and will lurk.

In closing....if your blood pressure has risen since the introduction and you are hitting refresh every few minutes, take a chill pill, learn basic photography first, read the friggin' manual, do the necessary adjustments to the camera and its settings ( don't be a d0uche!) and finally take some decent shots that you can share for feedback and assistance. Most importantly buy from a retailer that will calmly accept your return. That is a sane option if this camera is ruining your life and, of course, there will always be Nikon. :)

I find early adopters without the proper risk taking temperament are the root cause of most the problems here. Canon's product has become secondary. Thank god the introduction of the flagship model will cost almost what a car costs. The angst will mainly be virtual.

Strange sound inside 5D III (?)

Hi, I just bought a new 5d mk III and I am just wondering what kind of sound can I hear from inside of it. All the time when I press a shutter button (even half way) I can hear some "strange sound like really small twisting ventilator" from the part where the battery and the card is. It takes always same time - about 4 seconds and after that it stops and 5D is quiet until next press of shutter button. My 7D does not do it. It is not an IS. It is just "something", but I can hear it very well.

Any suggestions?

Technical Invite

Canon has sent out another invite for April 16, 2012. This will be beyond the screening from the other invite.

Could this be the hoped for 4K DSLR Canon has already teased the world with? As some would say, is this what videographers wanted the 5D Mark III to be?

We have heard the 4K DSLR would be announced sooner than later, however it’s rumoured availability would be in the distant future.

5D mark III silent shooting

So I just received my 5D mark III yesterday and I couldn't be happier. I do have a quick question that I can't seem to find an answer to. I am amazed at how quite the silent shooting mode is and would love to use it all of the time but are there any downsides to using that mode besides less frames per second? I doesn't put any extra stress on the shutter or anything else does it?

Canon 5D MarkIII & 1Dx - 1080p/60fps???

I want to share my thoughts & questions with all you people of Canon Rumors.
Who knows, maybe some of you knows the answer to my question.

I'm curious...

1x Digic IV is required for processing 1080p at /24/25/30fps (Canon 5DMark II)

1x Digic 5+ (aprox. 17x faster than Digic IV) is required for processing 1080p at /24/25/30fps (Canon 5DMark III)

2x Digic 5+ (on the side + 1 Digic 4 for mettering) is required for processing 1080p at /24/25/30fps (Canon 1Dx)

C'mon Canon... ::)

O.K. so you have improved video codec in 5dMarkIII/1Dx series, and that's great, but...
With improved codec, you delivered extreme processing speed, particularly in 1Dx (double power od 5dMarkIII which is already 17x faster than 5DMarkII).
I hope all that power is not implemented for shooting stills only?!

So my question is how much raw processor power does 1080p/60fps video really needs? :o

Is the Nikon D3200 the real competitor of the 5D3? (Instead of the D800)

http://nikonrumors.com/2012/03/28/nikon-d3200-coming-in-april-with-a-24mp-sensor-and-many-new-features.aspx/

The 5D3 and the D800 are 2 completely different cameras. Yes, they are both excellent for what they do (or mainly aimed for) but very different. I see the only thing they have in common is they both have been released in Q1 of 2012. That's it. Why compare them then? Even Nikon said somewhere (correct me if I am wrong) that the D800 is not really a replacement for the D700. How about the D3200? Well, it is supposed to be a replacement for the D3100. But the (rumored) specs are definitely closer to the 5D3 than the D800, that's for sure.

What do you guys think?

*UPDATED* 5D Mark III Issue with EF 200 f/2L IS Official Canon Response

*UPDATE* Canon’s Official Response

Canon USA has issued an official response to the 5D III IS noise issue:

“We have acknowledged that when using the camera with specific lenses, there is an abnormal noise during IS operation when the shutter button is pressed halfway (or remains pressed halfway), and we are now considering the countermeasures. We will let you know about the countermeasures as soon as they are finalized”

The two affected lenses are the Canon EF 200mm f/2.0 L IS USM Lens and the Canon EF 800mm f/5.6 L IS USM Lens.

Note that image quality is not affected by the abnormality. Also note that this noise does not occur during Live View including during video capture.

The Bugs

No camera these days is going to launch issue free, and a very noticeable one has shown up with the 5D Mark III is used in combination with the EF 200 f/2L IS. The issue being an odd and rather loud noise from the what seems to be the image stabilizer. I have noticed this first hand while using the combination in AI Servo mode.

Others have noticed it, and there’s a thread on the FredMiranda forums about it.

I have tested multiple 5D Mark III bodies with the following lenses. I also tested multiple 1D Mark IVs with them as well.

300 f/2.8L IS

300 f/2.8L IS II

400 f/2.8L IS

400 f/2.8L IS II

400 f/4 DO IS

500 f/4L IS

600 f/4L IS

800 f/5.6L IS (this came out the same time as the 200 f/2L IS)

Conclusion

I could only obviously reproduce the issue with the EF 200 f/2L IS on the 5D Mark III bodies, there was zero issue with the 1D Mark IV. I have two EF 800 f/5.6L IS lenses, and initially I didn’t notice the noise, but it is slightly there once I took the lenses out of the office. It sounds a bit louder on the 5D Mark III than on the 1D Mark IV although the 200mm is definitely louder. I could be hearing things on the 800.

I have noticed images aren’t quite as sharp with the EF 200 f/2L IS on the 5D Mark III, I imagine it has something to do with the IS issues in AI Servo mode.
