Powershot Perils

.
The convenience of the Powershot line is hard to overestimate. With the S95, etc., you can put a lot of photography power in your pocket. Unfortunately, those great little cameras can also be easy to lose, misplace, overlook, etc.

Last Saturday I went out on an all-day imaging spree, doing several events and some general street/transit stuff. DSLR in hand, and lenses, batteries, memory cards, etc. in a bag -- and my S95 in my pants pocket. When I got home, my S95 did not come home with me. So, I spent a couple of days calling event organizers, police departments, etc. I also began pondering if there is a Sony RX100 in my future. (That should give Canon pause.)

This morning I got a call from a transit agency. One of their police officers found my camera in a train station and turned it in as found. Reunion is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

It can happen to you! I was extremely fortunate; I really did not expect to ever see the camera again. I also found I was not as prepared as I should have been. Insurance is the obvious first possibility, but that's got drawbacks, not the least of which is a deductible that may not leave much coverage with the lower values of Powershots.

Somewhere I probably have the camera's serial number, but I'd have to do a lot of searching, and I might not have it around here. I had registered it with Canon though, so the serial number is there -- huge help in documenting it with police in recovery.

Anyway, just a word to think ahead a bit. If you've got a Powershot in your pocket, be ready one day to arrive home without it. As the Boy Scouts say, be prepared.

DxOMark vs. Reality

There are lots of posts about DxOMark, lots of support, lots of bashing, some of it fact-based, much of it hearsay and knee-jerk reaction. There are many posts about sales figures, generally fewer than about DxOMark, and generally with even less of them with real facts.

So...let's do a little reality check, about the past 5 years in DxOMark-land and the past 5 years in the real world.

The year is 2007. Nikon has the D3 as a flagship and the D300 as the prosumer APS-C body. Canon has the 1DsIII and D40, respectively. DxOMark scores the D3 as 81, the 1DsIII as 80 - a meaningless difference, by their standards. The D300 scores a 67, while the 40D scores a 64 - that is starting to look like a real difference.

2008 saw Nikon enter the 'affordable' FF market with the D700, which DxOMark scores an insignificant 1 point higher than Canon's 5DII at 80 vs. 79. 2009 had updates to the high-end prosumer APS-C segment, and Nikon's D300S scores a 70, while Canon's 7D scores a 66. 2010 brought us mid-range APS-C updates, and while the 60D with the 7D's sensor scores a 66, the D7000 scores an 80, beating Canon's then-current FF sensors.

This year, the somewhat-less-affordable FF battle continues, with the 5DIII scoring 81, barely better than it's predecessor, while the D800/E scores a very impressive 95/96, soundly beating all Canon cameras as well as every other sensor DxOMark has ever tested, including medium format bodies with sensors with 2.5-times larger sensors.

So, it seems quite clear that over the past 5 years in DxOMark-land, Nikon has been dramatically improving, Canon has been stagnating, and Nikon is way ahead. But that's DxOMark-land. What about the real world?

Canon and Nikon are publicly traded companies, and as such, they publish their annual and quarterly reports (in the Investor Relations sections of their corporate websites). IDC (a market analysis firm) also publishes annual summaries of the market as a whole.

In 2007, Canon had 43% of the dSLR market, Nikon had 40%. In 2010, Canon had 44.5% of the dSLR market, Nikon had 29.8%. So, over years while Nikon was bringing us better sensors than Canon, Nikon was losing market share while Canon was gaining it. Ok, fine, but that's 2010. What about this year?

In 2Q2012 (by calendar year, they report it as 1QFY2013), Nikon had an 18% y/y growth of unit sales of dSLRs and lenses. In 2Q2012, (they report by CY, not FY), Canon had a 47% y/y growth of unit sales of dSLRs and lenses.

So, DxOMark has said Nikon has had better sensors for years, and the sales data show that Canon has sold more dSLRs and lenses for those same years, and continues to do so, as of the most recent data available. The straightforward conclusion from the above is that while DxOMark's Scores have a huge impact on the number of inflammatory posts on Internet discussion boards, they have no meaningful impact on the real world aggregate buying decisions of consumers.

Need your Samyang/Rokinon/Bower/Walimex 35mm 1.4 experiences!

Hi there,

im seriously considering getting the Samyang/Rokinon/Walimex 35mm 1.4 lens since the Canon L lenses are too pricy for me yet i still want really good image quality. Greedy me...

Anyway what are your experiences with the Samyang 35mm 1.4 without using live view! I plan to use it solely with the viewfinder cuz liveview is just too slow for my needs. In my experience if i wanna take a portrait even my friends become somewhat nervous and "camera shy" so i wanna be quick when focussing.

Im mostly running around with m42 manual focus lenses on my APS-C so i imagine it cant be that much different having the Samyang but my fastest m42 35mm lens is just f/2.8

Considering switching to Nikon

I would like to have a serious discussion. I am not going switch in haste, I am justing thinking about this issues. So please, no flames, etc. Well thought out comments are welcomed.

Comparing Nikon and Canon bodies here are my thoughts

5D M3 no match
D800 no match, when/if Canon comes out with a high MP body, it is likely to be expensive.

Canon 1.3 crop in a 1 series body is great, Nikon's FX/DX lacks this feature. The 1.3 crop makes my 500 a bit longer

Not sure how I would compare the 1D X versus D4 (correct body?), but not terribly important since the 1D X is out of my price range.

Canon vs Nikon lenses

Nikon wins in wide angle.
Canon and NIkon both have great mid range lenses (24-70, 70-200). Canon's 24-105 is probably better than Nikons 24-120.

On the long end, similar quality though with the new super telephotos Canon may have an edge in optical quality and definitely on weight. But at what cost?

Nikon has 200-400, Canon has an interested lens in development, not out yet, costs $3000 (?) than Nikon's.

Speciality lenses - Tilt shift I think Canon wins at least for wide angles. Macro - both are great.

Conclusions

Canon - more expensive, lighter weight Super telephotos, weak in the wide angles expect for Tilt Shift
Nikon - less expense, stronger in wide angles,

Anything else?

Upgrading and looking for lens advice.

Ok, I currently own a T41 and the following lenses: 35 1.4 L / 85 1.8 / 100 2.8 L Macro / 70-200 f4L and I also own the 10-22 and 17-55 2.8 EF-S lenses. I am upgrading to the 5d Mark iii and I am thinking of getting the 24-70 v2 and the 16-35 L and selling my 2 EF-s lenses. I will still have a T4i as a second body but don't want lenses I can't use on both bodies. I am looking to start doing weddings, but currently shoot families and models with ease, my events are nice too but tougher to pull off with the rebel. Hence the upgrade to a FF with better ISO. Thoughts?

Canon 5d Mark III Shadow recovery

This shot was taken while i was adjusting for correct exposure. The sky looked okay but the bottom half is obviously underexposed. I wanted to see how much i can push the shadows in post. I increased the shadow recovery slider to +100 in camera raw keeping everything else unaltered. If i can do this in post then this is plenty of available DR in shadows for me.

Left - Original
Right - With shadow recovery slider set to +100

Upgrade or Add

Hey everyone,

Long time lurker but I'm in need of some feedback. I've read a few threads that get close to my question but not exact so hopefully this isn't a duplicate.

I've been shooting with a t2i for about 2 years now, got it a few months before the t3i came out. The full frame itch has always been there but when the 6D was announced I really put some thought into dropping some cash for an upgrade. Prior to that I was looking at just getting a decent L lense to hold me over. I REALLY want the 24-70 II but feel that the 24-105 would be a significant upgrade to the kit level glass I use now at more than half the price. I also lean towards landscapes and portraits but want a good lense for walk around and travel which I think sells me on that one as well, at least for my first big lense purchase.

I also don't have any sort of off body flash which I know is a sound investment.

So for the main question, do I wait and see how a production level 6D performs and grab it with the kit lens or am I better off buying the 24-105L with a 600EX and save up to get a 5D mark iii level body when the time is right?

These are the 2 scenarios I am looking at;
6D + 24-105 L for $2,900
T2i + 24-105 L + 600EX Speedlite for $1,500

I know the 7D mark ii rumors are also starting but I don't know if I really want to invest in another crop body.

I can wait a few more months but am going to be heading to Europe next year and would love to have something by then.

What to get?

I sold my 3 strobes with battery packs to fund purchase of flash units instead, but not sure what to get. I shoot weddings and portraits and would like a flash on a stand and another one for on camera use as well but only have 500-750 to spend on everything. Can anyone help me find a suitable setup to accomplish this? I have a little experience with the 430exII but I could never figure out how to get it to slave.

Any help would be amazing! Thank you.

Back to Cookham

I seem to have a thing for Cookham and the River Thames. A couple of autumnal shots from the (overcast part of) the weekend:

when/how to start a photography business?

Hi! Haven't been on this forum for a while! now that I'm in college and always strapped for cash, I'm hoping to make some money with this beloved hobby.

I've been shooting since sophomore year of high school(portraits, sports, wildlife). Shot homecoming/prom portraits for dirt cheap(Free to $10) for friends and friends of friends. But here, now I have a fresh start to set prices and not worry about friendships getting in the way.

Any tips on starting out?

New 60D or Second-hand 7D?

Well finally the cheque I've been waiting for has arrived and I'm ready to order my new kit! I'll get the EFS 15-85 and the EF 70-200 F4. I already have a 50 f1.8 mk1 and a 28-80 f3.5-5.6 mk2 from my single remaining film body (an EOS 10QD)

I'm almost decided on the 60D body - my budget will stretch to this new but wonder if a second-hand 7D body would be a better choice? I shoot a bit of everything except weddings(!) and do so for fun rather than money. I have a number of SD/SDHC cards already but no CF cards.

Opinions please? And if anyone is interested in a 10QD and 28-80 for their collection make me an offer and I'll but the cash toward a EFS 10-22! ;D

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

It’s coming, just not as soon as you’d like

A couple of known sources have finally popped up to talk about all the high megapixel rumors floating around this site and others. While most of what we’ve posted has been [CR1], there still seems to be a level of truth to it. However, I’m told that IF there is an announcement in 2012 for a high megapixel camera, it would only be a development announcement. There is nothing in the way of marketing or production for the rumoured camera.

Canon has done a very good job in recent months locking down the rumor mill, even going as far as giving far less NDA’s to media types.

I am confident the prototypes are out there, we just may not get our hands on one for a long while yet.

A new EOS 7D Mark II mention

A new EOS 7D Mark II is rumored to be announced some time in January, 2013. The camera would take the place of the 7D and 60D.

Specs are minimal, as should be expected. However, it should have a 20+ megapixel sensor and the ability to shoot 10fps. The frame rate is a “targeted spec” for the camera.

I think we’ll see the APS-C market slow down a bit, now that the D600 and EOS 6D are changing the pricing structure for consumer camera bodies.

Sigma 100-300 f/4 AF problems

I bought the Sigma 100-300 f/4 HSM a few months ago used (good price). On a trip last month, the autofocus stopped working. It still works fine in manual focus. Has anyone else had this problem, with this lens specifically or with Sigma lenses in general?

Annoyingly, I contacted one of their official service centers (CRIS Camera Repair) and they said they cannot repair it because it is no longer made and parts are no longer available. I mean, they were not even willing to let me send it in just to have them look at it. A local camera shop in my city does some repair work and they are looking at it now. I love this lens and would possibly replace it with the same thing if this is just a fluke. But if Sigmas are notorious for the autofocus failing, I will just have to get a 70-200 2.8 and use it with a 1.4X converter.

650D Results on DxOMark

Hi CR Community,

I have been lingering around this forum for some time now, but have not really posted much. Today, I found that DxOMark released their testings for the 650D. However, they showed that the 650D falls short in every way when compared with its competition. So what do you guys think? Personally, I don't view sensor measurement all that seriously, it is how you use the camera and performance in the real world that matters most.

Thanks.

Switching Canon 70-200 2.8L to Tamron 70-200 2.8 or not?

Dear community!

For more then a decade I´m using an Canon 2.8 70-200mm L lens (sometimes with an 1.4 extender). I´d like to buy a new camera body as an exchange for my unsatisfying 7D. (7DII?, 6D?, 5D3?)

My question is: Is the Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 Di SP LD Macro superior to my old Canon 70-200? Could I get an improved IQ with this lens?
Is this newer lens better for am crop sensor or an FF sensor then this old lens? more sharp?

(I do not want to buy an new Canon 70-200 2.8 L II lens. For me, the 3 times higher price is a "no go" for my wallet. For this money I´d buy other equipment).

Thanks
