Noob first Canon: For first video prime, 85mm 1.8?

Hello all,

I'm getting very close to pulling the trigger on getting my first HDSLR, the 5D mkIII.
I'm going to get the kit lens with it, and I can also afford one prime.

I'm trying to make my prime dollars count here, and from my research have been thinking that the 85mm 1.8 would do the trick. Fast enough for doing some good videos (most at home to start with, cooking shows, etc)...but also as a good walk around lens for video and stills.

From what I've read, it has much faster focus than the 85mm 1.2, good for stills...and was thinking that not going for some razor thin DOF of the 1.2, that the 1.8 would be better for video too?

As an aside, I also have an OLD lens that I was going to experiment with. I found my old, old and very unused from decades back...Nikon FA camera...with its 50mm 1.4 (I think?) lens on it. I was reading that these old Nikon lenses can work decently for video, just have to get an adapter. So, figured I'd experiment with that too...especially for video since it is a manual lens.

Anyway, just wanted to sound off on my thoughts I'd put together from reading these forums and lots of research and demos I'd seen on Youtube.....and hoping for input.

OH...one last thing.

Right now, I would only have iMovie to work with on my Mac...can I use the footage off my new 5D Mkiii directly into iMove for post work on it?

Thanks in advance,

cayenne :D

Noob first Canon camera: 5DMk3, You can't use the RAW stills yet?

Hello all,

I've been following the rumors here for the past few months. Awhile back, I was on a video shoot for the Canon 5D Mk2. I was blown away by the video, and wanted one.<P>
I've been talking to and learning from some local still shooters and am excited about working in stills and video.

I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on a 5D MkIII, but from some posts, I'm getting the impression that there is no software out there, that you can download and do anything with the RAW shots you take on the camera. Is this true? Is jpeg the only format you can take off the camera to do anything with post?

I've got enough saved to get the camera with kit lens, and was thinking of getting the canon 85mm 1.8 as my first prime. Right now, I only have iMovie and iPhoto that come with my mac, and figure that will be good to start learning with...but am now a bit hesitant in thinking that I may get this wonderful camera, but not really be able to do anything with the stills or footage I take with it.

Can someone tell me if I'm missing something? What are my best options? Will iMovie and iPhoto work with the content I take with my new 5D mkIII when I get it?

This is my first post, thank you in advance for any information and/or links to things to read up on....

Lens advice: which prime should I buy first?

I finally made the jump from point-and-shoot to DSLRs with the 5dm3 kit. I am having a lot of fun with the camera and, even in relatively inexperienced hands, I am able to take gorgeous pictures. I would like to buy a fast prime for general purpose photography, i.e., walking around the city, the park, etc.

Would you recommend the 50mm L or the 85mm L? Or, should I go for a wide angle prime?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Canon Direct refurbished thinning the herd?

Hey all,

Has anyone else noticed that recently the number of models available via Canon Direct (refurbished lenses and speedlites) has dropped from 5 pages of items to two pages of items? And that certain popular lenses (70-200 F/2.8L II for starters) are off the list?

Could this be indicative of what CR has been reporting, that Canon will be producing a record number of lenses this year, including but no limited to 24-70 F/2.8L II (we already know about this), 35L II, 200-400 2x, etc? Could it be indicative of less lenses being returned to Canon? Is Canon moving away from the practice of refurbishing and selling directly to the public? Or is this normal?

600ex-rt in stock at Crutchfield

Just ordered a 600ex-rt from Crutchfield, and it will be shipping out today. Cancelled my still-pending order at Amazon (never even got a shipping estimate from them on it)

Crutchfield has now come through twice for me.. for the flash, and for the 5D3 kit! And I'll have over $250 in store credit to use with them as part of their rewards program... sweet!

Canon 5D Mark III Body-Only Purchases From Broken Kits Question

I'm sure many of you have gotten your 5D3 bodies from what was originally the kit with the 24-105L. I expect my 5D3 body tomorrow, also from what was a kit. My question is has anybody run into a situation where they bought their body from the kit, and the retailer removed more than just the lens from the kit (such as the battery and charger, etc)? We all know that there are some unscrupulous dealers that will sell lenses, but remove the carrying case and hood from the box, only to sell them separately. Thanks all!

How do you store your gear when not in use?

My gear has exploded over the past 6 months as Im getting more pro. This means I had to buy a big camera bag to put all my lenses and accessories in.

However, I love to hold my camera once in a while. It is an addiction. I like to take it out and have it seen in my room. Its like a decoration! the 5DMKII + battery grip with a L lens on there. Say the 24-70mm. At the same time, each time its out, I feel it's getting dusty lol.

where and how do you store your gears? And if you put it in a camera bag, do you usually take off the lens and put the body cap on the body and store them seperately?

A bad workman blames his tools? (5DMkIII)

What is the real situation regarding 5DMkIII image quality?

  • There are real problems and I regret my decision to purchase

    Votes: 2 4.9%
  • There are real problems, but they will be resolved easily via a firmware update

    Votes: 1 2.4%
  • There is nothing wrong with IQ, but it's not as big an improvement as expected

  • There's a noticeable improvement in IQ over the 5DMkII

  • It's too soon to tell

    Votes: 21 51.2%

I've had the 5DMkIII for about a week now. I haven't had the opportunity to use it in anger yet, just a few casual test shots around the house. However, looking at all the complaints in the forums, particularly about image quality, I have to admit that I'm in real danger of catching a bad dose of buyer's remorse. This was supposed to be an all round camera that would last me the rest of my life (or a very long time anyway). On the other hand, it has been gently hinted at in various threads that some of the problems might be more to do with lack of familiarity with setting up and using the camera. Also, quite a few of the posters reporting problems e.g. with soft images have only recently upgraded from crop to full frame, which might also be a steep learning curve in itself? Jeff Ascough's words stick in my mind i.e. "So are there any negatives to owning this camera? Maybe just one. You will lose the ability to blame the camera for any shortcomings in your own photographic ability." Is this what is happening here, at least to some extent? I'm also reminded of Lloyd Chambers' articles on image sharpness i.e. there are so many reasons why images might not be sharp, most of which can be resolved (excuse the pun) by good shooting technique. Only when all other alternatives have been explored can the finger be pointed at the equipment. So, what do YOU think? Are there REAL problems with 5DIII IQ or is it just a case of "a bad workman blaming his tools" or maybe just excessive "pixel peeping"? I'm not pontificating in any way, shape or form here, just don't want to believe that I've spent my money unwisely. Most importantly, I'm off on a trip of a lifetime in a couple of weeks and intended to take just the 5DMkIII with me with a view to coming back with some saleable images and perhaps recouping the costs of the trip. In fact I bought it with that specific purpose in mind. Now I'm beginning to wonder whether I should buy a 5DMkII as a backup or even a replacement - at least the MkII has a proven track record and all it's various quirks are well known. With the 5DMkIII, it's beginning to feel like a "leap of faith" to rely on it completely as my only camera body. What would you do in my position?

PS: please take part in the poll

Suggestion for Camera/Laptop backpack

I'm currently looking at a Lowepro Fastpack 350, but I'm wondering about its size, it looks big, but its got this big compartment up to that basically wouldn't store any camera equipment securely.

Anyone have a suggestion for a good, solid backpack that can also accomodate a 17" lappy?

If theres something around the size of the Fastpack 350, but makes full use of the size for camera equipment it'll be nice, and useful.

At the very least, it'll need to accomodate a gripped 50D, 17-40, 24-105, 70-200 f/4s, 50 f/1.8, 135 f/2 and a 430EXII. That list might be expanding soon (considering a Sigma 85 1.4), so extra space would be good.

Bonus points if its waterproof & has a loop/storage for a tripod.

Not overly big that it wouldn't be allowed onto an airplane though

Edit: Also: I carry both a crumpler strap and spider holster, and use either one of them, so will need something that doesn't get in the way of the holster when I do use it

What lens for Fashion/Astrophotography/Video?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the realm of DSLR's (shot on a film SLR for many years, soon to progress to digital). In the next month or so, I will be buying a Canon 60D body, and a Nifty Fifty lens.

I will be getting into Fashion Photography as a career, and although my work is so far unpaid, I wish to buy another lens to suit the above gear. I want a lens that I can progress into when I upgrade the body (so preferably an EF lens).

I'll be using the lens for Runway, Studio, and Location shoots.

Now, here's the tricky part. As my work is unpaid, the lens budget would be about $600. As well as it being for Fashion, I would like it to be suitable for general photography also.

The trickier part still? Is there a such thing as a lens that is good for Fashion... AND Astrophotography? Astro is another passion, despite there being no money in it.

And then...would that one lens be good for Video?

For all I know, such a magic lens exists only in my mind - but any help is most welcome!

Thanks in advance :)

I just can't comprehend some of the negativity on the 5d3...

I can promise you this isn't a complaint, I'm just thoroughly confused at what people who are looking for a way to make short films/documentaries/etc. have to worry about when it comes to the 5d Mk. III when we already have major production examples of its quality in both Hollywood and Television.

I am as new as they come in regards to DSLR's and pro-sumer cinematography, so perhaps I'm being severely naive, but if we already have proof of the pro quality that the 5DII was able to produce, what's with the "regretting this purchase" air that I'm seeing from so many people?

If any of the doubters have seen the "House M.D." episode "Help Me", it was entirely shot on the 5d MKII with Cannon Primes and a few zooms. Even while watching a sub-par quality rip on the internet of the episode, I could not believe how filmic the episode looked. They weren't using $3k Cine lenses, they weren't using some crazy PL rigged mounts; they were using relatively standard glass. On top of that, for anyone that's seen "Act of Valor" can also see a lot of the amazing footage the 5d2 was able to conjure up, most ALL of the first person helmet cam shots as well as a notable scene in which one of the main villains is observing a warehouse full of bomb-makers.

I think a lot of people don't realize just how much post makes a difference. While I understand that House and Act of Valor were shot using studio lighting equipment (just like any major production), why is there so much flak being shot at the 5d3 when it's predecessor churned out filmic quality pieces that I described? Is that notion being completely ignored for the sake of comparing spreadsheets with sensor sizes, codecs, and other specs? It's almost as bad as the PC Overclocking community, disregarding well established products such as cooling radiators and water blocks just because something else came out that beats it by 1 degree Celsius. I'm relatively certain that everyone here can understand NO DSLR can match a $200k studio grade film camera, but once again, given produced examples there really should be nothing to complain about. Like I said, I'm pretty damn new to the DSLR market, but this is just my two cents.

Any thoughts?

5DIII is SHARP!

I've done a bunch of tests at different ISOs. Here's just one of many examples. This camera definitely produces some sharp enough images, at least for me.

ISO 100, RAW processed in CS5 (ACR 6.7). All I did in CameraRaw was slight increase of clarity contrast, and then some USM in CS5.

edit: most of you probably know this but some may not. To see the full picture, click the link right under the picture and once the image opens, zoom in to 100%.
