First, let me say thanks for all the great knowledge and information I've learned through this forum. I'd say I'm a bit addicted as it keeps me from my work. :

My question:

Is there a way to get focus confirmation in LIVE VIEW x 10 like we see when using the view finder with our MF lenses? Depending upon the amount of light I'm shooting landscapes in, sometimes its very difficult to see the LCD and know for sure I'm perfectly dialed in.

I've used external monitors on previous shoots but sometimes the whole set up is cumbersome and the monitor resolution was not as good as the LCD itself.

Hi. I have got the option on a couple of lens, just don't know which one to attack first.

(I already have a 70-200 usm II 2.8 and other lens for the purposes of background). Moving up to a 5d3 from a 600d so selling the ef-s lens in due course.

Lens I have option on (all used, prices are pre haggle, incl. estimation of freight and customs fees)

Canon f2.0 IS 200mm, price about 5k USD
Canon EF400 IS USM I f2.8 (not the latest sadly), price about 6k USD
Canon EF500 IS USM I f4 prob about 7.5k.

Now the latter is probably going to push the bank a bit.

I will be shooting a bit more indoor stuff and had thought the extra 1 stop would be worth it at 200. But the 400mm would also be good for shooting some outdoor sport stuff as well. It is a 50:50 call really (unless the good lady agrees and I can sell the other lens).

I also have the Sigma 150-500 f5.6 to whatever thingy. That might get 5-600 bucks.

My main though was towards the 400mm, allowing at worst case (!) use of a 1.4 or 2 to get up to 800 / f5.6.

Dilemma dilemma...

I appreciate both are "older" lens but not so old as to be a problem for support (?). Both conditions are relatively good and main thing is optics are good/they've been serviced/no mushrooms growing etc. I know the 400mm is a tad heavier but I can't justify 11k for the new sexy one either.

I need to decide within the next day or so and hope no one has jumped the gun on me.

Assume that the shooting mix is the same at 200 and 400 to make things "level". Is it better to lose one stop at 200mm and gain it at 400mm as I am thinking? The older 2 stop IS (?) on the 400 is not a problem per se (unless someone gives me the new one for the same price, dream) as it will be on a Wimberley head in any case).

So,, care to help a man come closer to some form of sense ?

I need help....

I was wondering how to make the best of photos taken in flat light like the example I attached

I find the areas of the picture where the subject is against the sky particularly problematic

Any advice on post-processing or exposure (preferably without flash) would be gratefully received

Aside from reach,how do the Canon 50 F1.2L and 85 F1.2L MKII lenses compare to each other when it comes to IQ,sharpness,contrast,and color rendering?Which among the 2 also focuses faster?

Finally got around to testing the AF assist lamp coverage of the 430EX II with the 61-pt AF system of the 1D X (and 5DIII). With a focal length of wider than 35mm, the outermost columns (which are f/5.6-sensitive lines) are outside of the coverage area. At 35mm and longer focal lengths, the 430EX II's assist lamp covers all 61 points.

The 600EX-RT provides full coverage, of course.

That is the style camera that Canon should introduce for their M system, together with some very high quality but small and fast zoom and prime lenses.

Also, is it my imagination or does the M-system lens mount have one more pin than the EF lens mount, perhaps for controlling lens zoom from the body?

</strong>ThatNikonGuy has completed what appears to be the first review of the new Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II lens. It’s a pretty good review as he puts them both through the paces. Lots of sharpness, bokeh and autofocus tests were completed at various focal lengths in the review.</p>
<p>He did notice the lenses differ in focal length at 70mm, this is pretty normal. For example, the EF 70-200 f/4L IS is not as wide at 70mm as the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II, it’s more like 85mm in examples I have seen.</p>
<p>His biggest point at the end of the review is how good do you want your 24-70 to be? For an extra $1000 (compared to buying a used 24-70 version 1), is it worth getting the version 2 when version 1 is so great? I can’t help with that yet, as I have not seen one land in Canada yet. It is good to know that when you have to make this decision, there really is no wrong choice.</p>
<p>Version 2 looks to be a little bit better at everything, autofocus, bokeh, sharpness, a more pleasing warmer image, lighter weight. The big downside is you’ll have to go buy 82mm filters, hopefully you have some already.</p>

Currently using the Canon 60D, and maybe down the road (maybe a year or two) will go for a full frame body. I am sure many of you faced the same dilemma. While I'd love the f2.8L IS I or II of this lens, the budget is keeping me from going for it. :'(

Was scouring the flickr pages, forums for photos taken with the f2.8L (non-IS) and f4L IS. Since I have no experience with this lens (considering its weight and size) I was wondering how difficult it is to keep the f2.8L (non-IS) steady while framing your shot. I am asking this because a friend of mine bought the f2.8L (non-IS) but returned it because it was difficult (at least for him) to get a good shot and freeze his subject (unless with high shutter speed). I know this various from person to person, as some of us may have steady hands than others. Any experiences shared here would be really helpful.

Also, I was wondering given the f4L lens with it's biggest aperture of f4; how is it's bokey quality in comparison to the bokeh rendered by the f2.8L at f2.8.

I am guessing the f4L IS is sharper. Correct me if I am wrong.

This is my first post on this forum but I've been a fan and observer for some time. I decided to get into photography late last year as a way to help me "smell the roses" and take a break from work and escape a little. I've loved every minute of it, however I was in an unfortunate accident over Memorial Day weekend and spent the last 3 months in the hospital. I have learned a ton from all of you, and have about one month to go before I return to work. I've learned Lightroom pretty well, I have a 5DIII and feel that I have a comfortable knowledge of getting around it and look forward to getting out and about and taking photos again and growing and learning as a photographer. Since I have a lot of respect for this group I'd love to tap into all of your experience and ask the question of "if you had a month where you could dedicate hours a day to learning and becoming a better photographer, but had limited mobility and likely couldn't spend a lot of time 'behind the lens', what would you learn and how?" I'd love to get to a point where I could put some very large prints on my walls that I was proud of and that I will continue to find interesting. I'm open to learn anything and I appreciate any advice or input that anyone may have. I find myself looking for a little inspiration and want to change my gear up a bit. I currently have a 60D (Gripped) with 18-200 kit lens and a Nifty Fifty. Let me say I love this camera and it always meets my needs! I do not use my photographs as a means of income, just a hobby and way to document life around me for myself and for my future generations. I did not get my 50mm initially when I bought my camera but when I got it in the mail from B+H I felt inspired and began really getting more in depth with my hobby. If I could I would (and I am trying to this day) ditch my 18-200 and stock up on a couple in expensive primes. Don't get me wrong I like the 18-200 for its versatility but find it un-mounted most of the time.
I want to sell my camera to fund either purchasing a 5D II or Classic. My first choice is the Mark II, I do enjoy video capabilities once and a while, and like making large prints for around the house so the higher MP count would be a bonus. But there are no takers in my area for my gear and would be more likely to raise enough for a Classic. My question is this:
Can the 5D Classic still perform well enough for an enthusiast like myself, or will I kick myself for not holding out for an unknown amount of time and getting the mark II?
If you could provide Sample photos from a Classic show casing it I would be greatly appreciative!

I bought my 5d3 brand new, never brought it in for service but thinking about it... before i do,
can i get your advices to why my photos turned out the way it did?

I notice the white line across my photo on the left side going vertically, happens on all
photos on the same spot. btw, the sensor never been cleaned before.

white line appears:
- with my other lens also
- regardless of shutter speed fast or long.
- more noticable when i darken the image (adding contrast, b&w etc..)
- more noticeable when bracketed photos merged into hdr as one photo
- with and without clear mrc filter

I have provided some samples for you to diagnose the problems. each samples with "normal" photo and
with "darken" intentionally for this purpose so you can the line more clearly as to what i am trying to explain. On "normal" photo, white line still appear but less noticeably.

if solutions can be fixed without having to bring it in for service, that would be greatly appreciated.
just don't like to wait or the fear of more problems could persist after bringing in for service due to dissembled/reassembled of parts.

Nikon is making there move soon with the d600 and Canon certainly won't be making their small FF dslr anytime soon.

I am trying to decide on which camera to purchase next - 5D Mark III or the 1D X. Upgrading from a 20D so this is a huge jump for me. I rented the 5D Mark III for a trip to Maui. I'm going to rent a 1D X to shoot my son's ice hockey game in a few weeks.

I've been following the site for a few months now and enjoy reading feedback from the community so I'd like to hear what you have to say about my photo.

Hey guys,

I am currently looking to upgrade from my 550D, now the thing is we just started out own production company next to university and are getting quite a few paid jobs, but I m really at the limit of the 550D.

I am going to Tanzania in January filming for my final uni project for a month (wildlife doc) and want to have a nice camera with me to film, but also I m really into wildlife photography so getting a 5d mark II wouldn't really do the job FPS/AF wise. I will have about £1500 (2300$) saved up by next month so I am really struggling to make a decision, I mean a 7D would be nice FPS wise, but then again for filming it's not really any upgrade to my 550D and the 5D mark ii is just a bit old now i suppose just like the 7d

I guess waiting for Photokina would be probably the best choice? (7d mark ii, fingers crossed)

Any suggestions?

How much would you give for a used 550d (or 600d) in good condition (fully operational, possibly with some cosmetic wear)?
I'm worried that my 400d will need a repair soon. You see I have passed 100.000 actuations and I get some random error 99 messages.
I believe that it's better to buy a new camera, rather than give 100-150 euros to repair my XTi.

I wish I could afford a 650d (love the touchscreen and burst rate) but it costs way too much for me now (750€ in Greece).
So I've gotta settle with something cheaper unless my XTi can make it till Easter 2013...

my first real SLR that I bought was the 450D, so before the age of digital how did Canon differentiate its model line up feature wise? I mean back say year 1998 the determiner of IQ was the lens and film and the paper that it was printed on. My point is, why have so many sensors across a brand's line up, with 1DX sensor, 5D3, 5D2 and then the rebel line up of sensors, if all camera's just over a decade ago had the same ability to capture light correct? So what you pay for then is build quality, FPS, and metering etc.

It states it's a kit that had the lens removed, so is this a good deal and will I still have a warranty? eBay always makes me somewhat nervous but 400 bucks less is a good deal. So please anyone who has bought a new camera from eBay and maybe even from this store tell me is it safe?

two days ago the charger from my t1i, just stop working so today i bought one new in the only photo store of my city, when i arrived to my home, i start to see big differences, the plastic feel cheaper, the sticker on the back is miss placed a little so i decide to open it, and i see this.

I love my country but always is so hard to find a good camera store.

is compared with my original charger that comes on with my t1i.

While doing some manual AFMA testing on my 5D3 (firmware v1.1.3), I noticed a peculiarity about focusing in LiveView - the camera ignores the AFMA setting, and will even not report any AFMA value in the EXIF data! My old 50D always used the AFMA data.

After looking into this a bit more and thinking it through, the observed behaviour seems correct and to be expected. When the camera is in LiveView, the image sensor is used to directly observe the focusing where the focusing is needed and therefore you don't need to adjust for any tolerances between the lens/AF sensor complex vs the image sensor. Thus, you always get the optimum focusing

The downside is of course that focusing in LiveView is much slower than when using the normal AF sensor.

This the 5D3 and 1Dx share so much on the AF side, I assume that this applies to the 1Dx as well. Confirmations of this observation on both 5D3 and 1Dx is appreciated.
