Amazing details with the mk III

Well....i just came back from the studio from a dear friend
We did talk a lot about the mk III (....though he is waiting for the D800E )
We printed some images I took today and we were very impressed with the camera output
I find the image quality at base ISO to be extraordinary !
We did some large print with his gigantic Epson GS6000..... I was on the floor to see how great the print came out and well the detail where retained despite printing so big!!!
Here s the picture we printed
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1032&thread=41044663
5D mk III with the 100m 2.8 L

Believe me when I say that this is an incredible camera!!
superior to the great mk II

No reason to be jealous at the D800 pixel count
Resolution in not only about numbers....

Cheers
Ettore

Have soft images? This helped me a ton!

Just like many others on here, I was experiencing less than sharp photos on my MD3. They were good, but I felt like something was missing.

Before jumping into micro adjustments and trading my body for a new one, I assumed the most likely cause to my issue was in fact the user. Me.

I'm not used to a sophisticated AF system (coming from the t3i). So I decided to educate myself on it by just going out and shooting with different settings.

Normally I would shoot on "Auto AF" and would get less than sharp results. Then I switched over to Spot AF and the results are much better!

NOTE: These shots are both from in camera JPEG's and have had zero editing. I simply cropped them, and saved them out of photoshop. These are not processed RAWS, so I imagine the RAW file could have been sharpened much more.

Video Review @EOSHD

EOSHD guy is not happy with the Mark III because of he codec seems to add noise to the video and when compared to the GH2 (HACKED), the GH2 fair relatvley well and is far cheaper!

I have seena few other sites bragging on about the GH2 (HACKED) vs other cameras!

Now I recall Digitalrev reviewed the GH2 using native video and it was pretty much a coin toss between that and the 60D and in some parts the 60 besting it.

So to conclude is the 5D Mark III waiting for a hack before we see its true video potential? Also will any hacks trigger Canon to make it official or fix the codecs as they did with the 5D Mark II?

And finally whats the chances of the 4K DSLR being a 8MP camera? Essentially shooting stills at 24 FPS with no AF! It would be a no wow photo camera, but for video it could be the sharpest around as long as the codec is done right!

Received used (!?) 5D III from Crutchfield

Now I cannot believe my bad luck. After getting a defective one from Adorama, today I got 2nd body from Crutchfield. Came well packaged in box with peanuts, but the camera box itself is dented and molested - looks like opened before. I did not notice any marks, smudges or fingerprints on the camera or accessories, however.

Called Crutchfield and they will take it back. They are saying it must have come from factory like this.

EDIT: I'll see if the camera works okay before deciding to return it. It just sucks to get such an expensive toy in a beat up box. I initially thought it was used - made a mistake of inserting an empty but previously used card, so the camera likely picked up the last number and started with picture #69, so I thought it was removed from the box and perhaps use. But I cannot really tell if any pictures were taken with it. Neither EOSInfo nor eoscount.com are able to read the shutter count of 5dIII yet.

So the only issue is the beatup box, judging by crushed corner dropped on the floor. Whoever is handling these $3500 items could put more care into it.

5dmk3 day one tweaks...JPG adjs i.e -Light Optimizer, iso adjustments, etc&othrs

Anything you turn off/on day one of receiving your new 5dmk3? I turned off the light optimizer but noticed a few others i was not familiar with. I think iso related?

I hate how you have a few options, usually low, med, high. I find myself turning them all off, otherwise im obsessed with how it may or may not affect my shots.

Any recommended on or off settings suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

5D2 vs 5D3 ISO100 around 50 test raws

So I spent about 8 hours doing this last night
3 tests, all ISO 100

test 1 - the AF micro adjust method using the canon utility
test 2 - shooting a test chart off a tripod
test 3 - handholding a shot to confirm

all tests using center point only
I also turned off the in camera lens correction stuff
anyway all the exif data is there

test 1 and 2 lit by 4 5500K constant lights & shoot through umbrellas
test 3 ambient tungsten light at night

lenses tested
16-35 f2.8 II
50mm 1.4
Sigma 85mm 1.4
100 f2.8L IS Macro
70-200 f2.8L IS II
300 f4L (i had to bump iso on test 3 up to 800 for these being hand held)

I didnt test the 24-105 because my wife was out and had the lens but i will do it and add it in

during this i discovered to my horror that the kenko DGX teleplus 1.4 teleconverter does not work on the 5Dmk3
nice of canon to kill that for me :( :'(

Overall I feel the images are sharper however I think the 5Dmk2 still beats the 5Dmk3
I have not done any detailed manual focusing tests yet and havent done any more AI servo tests using the 70-200 yet either... maybe tonight.

Anyway happy downloading and comparing.

How do you test your new camera body?

There have been a flurry of posts since the Mk3's hit people's hands of either problems or soft images. Until reading these posts I would have never thought of checking a sensor for dead pixels by shooting images with the lens cap on.

So I wanted to ask, in what ways do you test a new camera body for functionality? Any other checks you routinely perform like the dead pixel test above? Do you always do an AFMA with each lens in a closed environment?

Auto Focus question

Hey there! I've been taking photos with my 5D Mk II for some time now. fact is, I always use the center focus point. And by always I mean always, I'm used to focusing and recomposing. My question is simple: all of you having cameras with complex autofocus systems (1D, 7D, and now 5D Mk III), how do u use autofocus? Zones? Center point? Etc...

I would like to read what you have to say.
To specify a bit, let's talk about portraits ( I cannot imagine myself using something different than the center focus point), concerts, sports and landscapes.

Thanks in advance & take care :)
Nico :)

5d3 Meter underexposing

Long time Nikon shooter (D700's) just switched to Canon (2 5d3's). Love the new setup but having a hard time understanding what's going on with my metering. No matter which metering mode I'm using, it's consistently underexposing by about 2/3's to one full stop. I've done numerous tests putting both cameras' meters against my Sekonic so I'm not just looking at my lcd thinking it's dark. Unfortunately, Canon won't let me push my exposure comp in manual mode like my Nikon's would so anyone have any ideas how to fix? Haven't been able to find that many people are having the same issue but it's the same in both cameras so doubtful it's a solitary functional issue. Anyways, thanks in advance for the help.

Sony to release square ff sensor body?

http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr3-hot-new-sony-a1s-with-full-frame-square-sensor/

The new A1S SLT camera with square sensor: According to two different sources Sony has a working prototype which one of my sources told me is called “A1S“. The real incredible news is that it has a Full Frame square sensor. Don’t know if it is 36mm x 36mm or a bit smaller. The source said that “will change the world of Full Frame photography“. The very good news is that all current Alpha and Minolta Full Frames lenses will work on it without any issue!
While it might only have an optical viewfinder like other sony bodies I have to agree with the comment on the site: "Take that Nikon D800 and new Canon 5D!". And it makes me wonder if it's still a clever idea to invest in high quality canon lenses that will last a decade or more if the big money r&d competition seems to do better than the not that revolutionary advancement of the 5d2->5d3 after a couple of years.

Disclaimer: I love Canon, I have a Canon, I won't sell my Canon. But still...

Canon 5DmkIII vs Nikon D800

I currently own the Canon 5DmkII. When cost is considered - for my next camera I am actually considering switching to Nikon. It seems to me that the D800 is more camera for less cost. Why would Canon charge more for the new version of the 5D then Nikon charges for the D800 when the D800 is a 36MP camera? Someone tell me why I should not abandon Canon and switch to Nikon. Yes I have a lot of money tied up in 3 Canon L lenses however ignore that. I want to know if I am missing something with this picture?

Filter and preference question

This may or may not have been a debate that's been beaten to death, and I couldn't think of the right search terms to isolate exactly the question I'm looking for without sifting through thousands of results so please forgive me if I strike a nerve with someone- but I had a couple of questions on filters.

First off, I'm not a pro but in that medium between pro and novice, somewhat intermediate, but with a flare for photography which I picked up studying architecture and design. Anyways- that's a little background on me, and I've been shooting roughly 4-5 years on a 20D with non-L lenses, however I just purchased and am expecting shipment of a 5D3 with the 24-105L lens (took me roughly 3 years of debate between the 105 or 24-70 but I just decided to buy the 24-70 later on in a few years when the Mark II comes down in price, hopefully). I'm very careful with my gear, but accidents do happen, as I dropped a 12-24 Tokina with a filter once in a freak accident, the filter shattering and the lens being safe. Shoot full Manual 90-100% of the time, never auto. Hopefully that's a good enough background for those who would like to know before answering questions as I've found it helps.

I have recently found out through a different forum post in regards to the 5D3 and some off topic banter that there is a difference of opinion in the community of using lens filters or not, and would like some clarification on the matter. I saw a video of a nifty 50 1.8 being beat to death with a hammer and no issues coming of it, but I put little faith in that when it comes to a $1000+ lens. In my experience, some of the cheapest things made today, can take the world's biggest beating but it's the pricey stuff that can't. I just wanted to know what the advantages and drawbacks were of using filters on L-glass or your more expensive lenses. I only have the 24-105 on the way and a Canon 1.4 50 as far as my expensive ones go, but am looking to potentially expand into some nice primes later on.

I do understand it boils down to a personal preference, I read arguments about if the lens filter shatters, it could scratch the main lens' glass, but I've also heard other pros swear by it that it has protected glass on occasion where the lens was dropped, the shattering of glass turned out to just be the filter and saved the lens. So I guess my real question is- what is your personal preference and why, and what is the preference of the people you know and admire?

Up until now I was determined to head out to my local Samy's Camera once my 5D3 arrived to get the filter (and potentially show it off.. hahaha) because I've always heard you should always have one but I wasn't sure which one I should get which led me to finding out about this debate. Now I'm back to square one in lens knowledge it seems, HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!! :-[

Best lens/TC setup for football game

I am looking for the best solution for shooting a football game. I will be shooting from the side of the field and end zones. My camera is a 5D MKII; I know not the ideal sports camera. I have a 70-200mm F/2.8L which I know will be too short. I was planning on renting the 400mm F/5.6L for some wildlife photos, but now I might need something more versatile. I am considering between the options below:

70-200mm F/2.8L with 2x TC III
100-400mm F/4.5-5.6L
400mm F/5.6L

Thanks for your recommendations.

Help me test large aperture Prime AF accuracy

So I have a the new 5dmk3 and a 50mm 1.2L. I have been trying to get the micro adjustment on the lens just right, but but I figured out why it had been a bit confusing up to this point. If I use the center point (or any AF point within the metering ring) I get spot on tack sharp AF on like 90% of the shots with 0 MFA. BUT, if I use one of the outer AF spots I get pretty bad back focusing (like +15). I thought maybe it was the body I had, so I just went back to the camera store and exchanged it for another body hoping that I would at least be able to figure out if that was the variable. Turns out this body is exactly the same. This makes me think it is either difficult for the AF to get a good lock due to the aberrations of the glass the closer you get to the edge, or something wrong with the lens itself (it is brand new and date code is uz0909). I'm also just wondering if this is the price you pay with AF on really fast glass. That is where you come in. If you have fast glass (1.2) try checking the AF accuracy on center point and a more lateral point and lets see if we can come to a consensus. I'm especially interested in 50mm 1.2 as thats what I'm working with. I tested my 70-200 2.8 and it's pretty spot on with no MFA, on both center and lateral AF points. I'll post a few test shots of my 50 when I get home later.
