From FredMiranda.com

Fred Miranda has posted his review of the Canon EOS-1D X. I always find his reviews easy to read and quite detailed in real world situations.

Conclusion

Overall, the 1D X is a very versatile camera. When you shoot with it, you feel like it can handle anything. Combined with ultra wide-angle lenses, the 1D X captures amazing full frame landscape photos. It does costs more and has less resolution than the Canon 5D Mark III (Read our Canon 5D Mark III vs Nikon D800 review), but you’ll get great dynamic range, less banding, and body that you can take anywhere under any conditions. Sports and action shooters have found a match made in heaven. Only time will tell if other realms of photography will embrace it too.

Nikon user Swapping to Canon with a 5D3

I've been shooting a D700 for the last year or so & have found it to be a great body. That said, the FX lens offerings don't appeal to me as much as the Canon EF/L range and so I've decided to upgrade to a 5D3 instead of a D800E.

I'm not hugely invested in FX glass, quite the opposite actually so I won't be losing much at all on price.

The 6D may have me reconsidering a little but I'd really like to be out shooting now rather than waiting for a new body to be announced then actually available at some point in the future.

Cheers :)

gear advice for second body

Slight conundrum over here and not quite sure which way to go. I have a 7D and an 5dmk3. Since I bought the mk3 the poor 7d has sat on a shelf. I brought it with me on a few weddings but just could't reason why I'd bust it out (go figure, can the 7d pull down awseom f8 images at 1/125th and ISO 6400??? Nope...lol. On the last wedding though, I did find myself not liking the run back to my lenses to swap (missing the moment), or staying with the lens on camera (getting the moment but not in the way I wanted). I have a 24-70 and a 70-200 currently. So what I am thinking is pick up a fast prime for the 7D (or, save up for a second mk3!).

So, which primes would work? I really like the idea of a 50mm 1.4, but, i think I'd really like that for the mk3. 50 on a 7d would be more like 80mm. So would that lead to too much overlap? I want to be able to pull the 7d back into the fray. Would a 50mm be too long? Other lenses I'm considering, the 28 1.8, not as fast as the 50, but it would be like a 50 on FF. The 35mm 2.0 also looks nice, it's a stop less than the 28, but closer to the range I'm thinking. Or, more expensive but go the opposite direction - the 135mm 2.0 (hard to bite the bullet of a $1000 lens for a backup body).

I feel like the 50mm has the most use on both camera advantages (for when I want to go nutty with DOF). But 50 is more like 80 on the crop which makes the decision difficult. 80mm does not fit, lol. I'm either range limited or range duplicated (why use the 7d+50mm if i have the 70-200 mounted on the mk3, and, if i have the 24-70mm mounted on the mk3 the 50 on the 7D really isn't a bump in range.) Should I consider an 85mm 1.8? (go 85 on the 7D and 24-70 on the mk3???) uggg....not sure which way to go...

Yikes! Shorty McForty for $129

It didn't take long for the McForty to drop. AUD$129...with free shipping. That's getting close to 50 f/1.8 pricing.

I know some people feel a bit ambiguous about eGlobal but I have had no problems at all with smaller items like this. For big dollar items, particularly those with CPS qualification relevance, I do stick with my regular local dealer.

Batteries for Canon EX 600 RT...

Hi! Which batteries are you using for your flashes? I used to use regular Energizer NiMH with a 15 minutes charger, they give a good 500 something fires with the 580 EXII, but the problem is they need to be charged the very same day you are going to use it. They lose they charge in just a few days. On the other hand, the Eneloop hold they charge for really long time but takes like a whole night to charge.

Wonder what are you all using....

my desert softbox solution

So I had to shoot some people and they decided high noon in the middle of the desert was a good idea ::)

I had 2 speedlights and a large reflector and some phottix odins.
I only had about 5 mins to setup and about 20 mins to shoot

since they were wearing high visability clothing with reflector strips direct hard light was out so i made myself a windproof softbox :) the silver side of the reflector is hung over the saftey cage so the whole back behind the lights is silver refelector thats the translucent insert scrim which just happens to fit perfectly to fill the back of a prado :P

i adjusted the position of the lights (they are just lying down ontop of my camera bag behind the scrim) after this shot moved them back and spread out a bit i just pulled the highlights down 100% to show the speedlights better

135mm + 1.4 extender _VS_ 70-200mm f/2.8 IS mkI

I have the Canon 135mm L. It's my longest focal length.

If I want to shoot at longer focal lengths, would it make more sense to get an extender for the 135mm... or get a lens that has/includes a native 200mm length? Image quality is important. And I don't mind changing lenses (I'm mostly a prime shooter anyway).

I'd like to avoid paying an extra $1000 for the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS I, when all I really want is that 200mm length. Or how about the Canon 200mm f/2.8 L? My concern with the 200mm f/2.8 L is the lack of IS. Of course, that's also an issue for the 135mm + extender (but extenders are cheap, and if the IQ is 90% of a non-extended lens, I could probably settle for that until I have more funds).

Looking for Opinions/Ideas

Hey, gang! I'm looking for some advice on where to go next with my equipment. Currently, I'm shooting with a 7D, 24-70 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L MkII, Sigma 50mm 1.4 and do a lot of outdoor shooting (more people focused, less on nature/environment), and the ocasional portrait (mostly my kids, but have done and enjoyed doing a few paid gigs for friends of friends).

It's all served me nicely so far and I've been of the mindset that I'd rather invest in glass than a body, but the two L lenses I own have served me so well, that I've been hard pressed to find another lens that's really worth investing in based on my style of shooting.

While I don't *have* to buy anything, I'm looking at trying to expand what I do and looking for suggestions on where to go. I've never really been into landscape shooting, but I've also never owned a full frame and a wide angle lens. Macro seems like fun and I have been eyeing the 100mm f/2.8L macro for some time, but I'm just not sure how often I'd really use it. So that leaves me thinking a full frame body could be the way to go. The high ISO performance could open up more indoor shots, the improved auto-focus would (or at least, should be based on my experience with the 7D) help me capture even more great captures of hard to predict and fast moving kids (I don't really take advantage of the 7D's burst rate), and everyone raves about how much "better" full frame is/feels.

So knowing that my goal is to diversify and/or expand my style and improve the quality of the photos I'm taking (as in, I'm happy with what I've been doing and just want to improve the IQ), what sort of recommendations would you suggest?

tl;dr - Want to diversify/expand my "street" and occasional portrait style, looking for suggestions. Already have a 24-70, 70-200, and good 50 prime with a 7D. So do I go body with a MkII or get more glass? If glass, what do you feel brought more to the table: wide angel or macros?

5d3: HDR VS Multiple Expsosure vs AEB

I have never done HDR with the exception of playing around with the in camera HDR functionality.

My question is I may take some shots this weekend that could benefit from HDR processing and was wondering if I could get some tips on the best approach. From what I can gather, the multiple exposure function is just that, it does not alter the exposure with subsequent frames.

I would think shooting bracketed with at least 3 frames would be best. Obviously I would shoot on a tripod.

- Is AEB bracketing the best approach?
- If so, what are the best settings (0,-,+)
- How many frames should I shoot of each scene?

Thank in advance.

5D III Manual Mode Problem

When in the studio shooting manual mode with my 5D III, I get an "L" indication when I try to change the aperture using the rear wheel. The aperture won't change. I am able to successfully change the aperture using the LCD screen display. I do not get this problem with the 1D-X or 5D II. What am I doing wrong?

Help with efs 17-85

My 17-85 is failing every few shots it gives me an error 99 or error 00. I looked at the canon repair site and it could cost about 150 to repair. My question is it worth repairing the 17-85 or should I look to replace it? If I choose to replace it i can only spend about 600 dollars. The next part of my question if I replace it could I find something decent for that price.

not entirely sure what the buzz about 16 bit PROCESSING is, i thought the processing is 16 bit already but the data is only 14 bit? (two bits are always zero).

does this mean it´s 16 bit from the sensor, through AD, to the prozessor?

Canon Official Retailer VS Parallel import

Hi I am looking to buy a 5Diii so just a quick question on retailers
So the official Canon retailer sells the body in NZ for 5100 and the guy that parallel import sells it for 4450
This is all crazy since it sells for 2750 Aus as a parallel import ?

Anyway so what is the real difference in the box ? The guy in the Canon store told me is that it is not a NewZealand guarantee and they cannot guarantee where the camera comes from? But what is the difference of the shiny new camera in the box is what i want to know? Or is it all about the after sales support ? I mean e-bay, Amazon all sells them ?

Seeking for opinion about body option.

Hi guys,
I am a wedding and event photographer. Recently i would like to get myself into sports photography.
I have a 5D2 and a 5D3 for my job, since i have a 5D3, 5D2 mainly use to shoot group photos, where situations everyone stand still and capture 3-4 per group then next..then next..then next.........5D2 is used because i wanna save the shutter life of 5D3.

So...since i wanna get myself involved into sports photography...i am considering to sell my 5D2 for a 7D. Would 7D 1.6 crop + 10-22 quality be good enough for group photo tht usually taken by 5D2? would it be able to replace my 5D2 as my back up camera? I know my 5D3 is fast enough to shoot sports..but again..i wanna safe the shutter of the FF for some work require better quality, dof or wide angle etc...

This is difficult for me, because if my 5D3 has something goes wrong, i can use my 5D2, still a FF...but if i switch to 7D...no longer FF...and i dont know about 7D quality as event and wedding work..
Please suggest....

Thanks for your time reading!!
