5D M III Jpgs no processing

All of these images were converted from raw to jpg and resized down to 6x4 and 300 dpi, thats it, no crop, no enhancement of any kind. I know i can be more thorough and get shots in jpg at the same iso same place but to tell you the truth the light was changing rapidly at the point i took these.
One thing i'll say about noise. You can get awful noise from 400 iso from any camera if its underexposed the key to keeping noise at bay is good exposures for you who are new to this or just havent figured that out.

I did these shots in a rush so sorry about all that. I did shoot today around the house and i will say i have not prob shooting 25,600iso, the detail is retained and for weddings if i need it i wont feel guilty using it.

Also This was accomplished with CS5 with the beta update. LR doesn't recognize the raw files yet.

5D3 "Dark Ring" Issue Seems To Be From In-Camera Sharpening

I saw this "dark ring" issue with my 5D3 today.

I was shooting daffodils etc. in sunlight against dark backgrounds. I was shooting RAW + JPG.

Got them home, and saw dark borders around bright parts of flower petals etc.

Since I'd been shooting RAW too, I tried re-processing in camera and turned sharpness down to minimum and created another JPG.

Looked at that on the computer and the dark border was gone.

So I've reduced the sharpness setting on the camera now.

AF might be way better, sensor barely at all, video mode only half fixed(?)

looking at some AF tests on some forums, early tests, rather brief, etc. etc. keep that in mind, hint at a really humungous improvement in AF. In one test a guy focused a fast lens, wide open, barely any DOF on his little girl's eye and the center point 5D2 was dead on sometimes and somewhat off sometimes only truly nailing focus about 50% of the time, the 5D3 was dead on pretty much every frame, considerably better performance; using the left point, the 5D2 was off on by far most frames, looked like 80%+ off, while the 5D3 appeared to be just about dead on on every single frame. :D

So the AF earlier results, at least for non-sports tracking, are showing some very encouraging signs. I also saw one guy post a perfectly focused shot of a backlit shopkeeper with tons of brigher and more contrasty and detailed stuff behind him, a test that canon af has often failed on, certainly below 1 series, so that was looking great too.

OTOH, one of the guys posted a high ISO comparison and yeah the 5D3 was better, but wow it looked closer to only 1/3rd stop better. :( Granted using ACR is NOT the best way to test and maybe at the super duper high iso above ISO6400 the story would be different. But if this result held up then we have basically the same sensor as the 5D2 with just a few minor tweaks while nikon put much process sensors in the D4 and D800, even the D4 a non-exmor, managed to improve 1 stop low ISO DR over a few years, but Canon not a single bit :'(. It seems Canon is investing less in sensor fab while charging a lot more for their equipment now. :-\

So we are facing a new situation, we are like the Nikon of old, body performance may be fantastic but the sensor kinda pales in comparison (although maybe at ISO1600+ it will be top notch current so it may only be behind on one end of the scale, IF it does get to D3s-type leves on the top end that is certainly a nice improvement, no doubt).

Hopefully the more careful tests of DxO will paint a better picture of the High ISO tale though. And we will at least get high ISO up to D3s,D4 standards. This guy's test looked a bit worrisome, looked questionable to even match the D800 at high ISO, but other tests make it seem quite possible. ANd it's all but been established that the D800 will be noticeable better at ISO 100 for scenes having large dynamic range (they really are not that hard to come across, in part, people were so used to thinking them impossible, they don't even see them anymore in their photographic mind's eye and automatically right them off without even thinking about it).

But the early AF tests are looking VERY, VERY good so far. The body performance seems great this time.

ADD: I've since seen reports from a few people who shot a game or two and they said it did better than their 1 series body when it came to AF.

ADD: The video is apparently blurry and not real 1920x1080 again, getting blasted on the video pro blogs apparently, if they couldn't do 3x3 smoothtly since those blocks are too large compared to the AA filter without having to blur down res to stop aliasing then why not offer a second, cropped mode, using 2x2 blocks like the C300? That may have made the video on this totally killer and been better for the wildlife videographers just in general.

Yet Another 5DII/5DIII Dilemma

I am a long time lurker and first time poster. I have been shooting with a 7D for the last 2 years, always with plans to upgrade to FF. I am an enthusiast who shoots all types of photography; macro, landscape, wildlife, sports and family. I don't shoot much video. I currently only have 1 EF-S lens (17-55) and a number of L zooms and primes. Now that the 5DIII is shipping, I am unsure if the additional cost is worth it to me. I feel I have 2 options:

1. Keep my 7D and buy a Mark II kit (7D primarily for wildlife/sports and Mark II for family, landscape & macro)
2. Sell my 7D and 17-55 lens and buy a Mark III kit (will sarifice wildlife reach)

I realize the Mark II has autofocus limitations and the Mark III is a superior camera. As I'm an enthusiast, I don't really need a back-up body. I'm having difficulty pulling the trigger on the Mark III and am hoping some objective feedback will assist me in making the decision (I'm actually leaning towards the Mark II). Thanks!

How to Edit 5D MK III Raw files in Lightroom(Windows)

Note, it has been pointed out that sone users (Ones I trust) have found that DPP is producing soft images. Rather than recommend it, I am going to rewrite the process to explain how to use the RC1 version of Adobe DNG converter until we find out whats going on with DPP.

Thanks to those who posted the link to info about DPP.

You have your new Canon 5D MK III and want to edit the raw images in Lightroom. Since Lightroom does not yet support CR2 files from a 5D MK III, here is a alternate method.

Note, If you use Adobe Photoshop, install the Adobe Camera Raw 6.7 RC1 here: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/cameraraw6-7.html

Your camera came with DPP, EOS utilities, etc, but experienced testers have found the first version of DPP to produce soft images. so here is a better method than using DPP.

This is a abbreviated process on how to get the images into lightroom using Adobe DNG. It is a release Candidate version and subject to change, but users, including myself have had good results.

[list type=decimal]
[*]If you haven't already, download Adobe Digital Negative Converter 6.7 RC1 here: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/cameraraw6-7.html Click the accept terms box and a list of versions will appear. Select Adobe DNG Converter for the computer you use. (Do not select Camera Raw for use with Lightroom, it works with Photoshop).

[*]Install the software

[*]Transfer the cr2 images to your computer using the utility of your choice.

[*]Open DNG Connverter, select the folder with the images. As far as I know, you must convert all the images in the folder, jpeg images will be ignored.

[*]Select or create a save folder, it can be a different or sub folder from that holding the original cr2's.

[*]If you wish to create a new name for the files, you can do it here, but be careful, or you will lose the correlation with the original cr2 file numbers.

[*]Advanced users can create their preferences. Be aware that some of the preferences can greatly increase fole size, or make smaller files that have lossy compression. The default settings are a good place to start.

[*] Click Convert

[*]Open Lightroom and import the dng images as you would any other image.

[*]At this point, you are editing what amounts to a raw image in Lightroom and can export it to jpeg, etc for upload to your web site.

Good luck

Will the 5DIII require 1 or 2 wireless receivers for my 580EXII

Like many of you I'm waiting for my tax return to splurge on the 5DIII (upgrade from my 40D). I recently bought the 580EXII speedlite and have been strictly using it mounted to the shoe on my camera. I'd like to start using my flash off camera and this is where I need some help. I think that the 5DIII and the new 680 speedlite will be able to transmit/receive from one another without any additional hardware such as two pocket wizards.

My question is if I get the 5DIII with its transmitting capabilities, will I be able to buy a single pocket wizard to act as a receiver for my 580EXII or is that technology proprietary to Canon? I bought my speedlite on sale for $400 and it would be cheaper for me to just buy one pocket wizard but if it's not compatible I think I'd be better off just selling the 580EXII and paying the difference to get the 680.

Thanks in advance for the insight/advice,

Omid

Worth upgrading from 100mm macro to version II?

[Edit: as has been kindly pointed out, there is no "version II" as such. What I'm referring to in the title is the 100mm f/2.8 L IS USM Macro versus its non-L non-IS predecessor].

I already have the 100mm f/2.8 macro and have always found it difficult to obtain sharp hand held images. I'll be travelling soon and I'm wondering if it would be worth upgrading to the 100mm f/2.8L II IS, particularly as I probably won't be lugging a tripod everywhere with me and in any event as I'll be with my family I probably won't have the time to think too much when macro photo opportunities arise, least of all set up a tripod.

Does anyone have direct hands on experience with both lenses and if so, I'll be grateful for some feedback on how they both perform in the field and whether the upgrade is worth the additional cost.

Also, I'm wondering if 100mm is sufficient for 1:1 images of nervous flighty things e.g. flies, dragonflies etc or whether a longer focal length lens would be better. Having said that though, the 180mm macro costs twice as much and also doesn't have image stabilisation - coupled with the longer focal length, I should think that would make it even more difficult to hand hold?

I'm erring towards investing in the 100mm f/2.8L II IS, but what do you think?

EF 14mm f/2.8 L II & Cokin X-Pro filter holder

Has anyone used this combination of filter holder & lens together on a FF body? I would LOVE to hear any input. Mainly, I am wondering if it will vignette with 2 filters in the holder. I plan on using the universal ring adapter & have heard that it DOESN'T vignette with one filter in the holder. Is that true? Will it vignette with 2 filters?

Also, I know that there is issues stacking Cokin filters. I'm not planning using Cokin filters but buying Singh-Ray GND filters instead.

Thanks in advance!! :)

5D Mark III versus the Mark II

For those that have received their Mark III (this includes you Craig), how does the camera compare to the Mark II? Is it a significant improvement?

I am considering upgrading and trying to figure out if it is worth spending $1,500 to do so.

Please only folks that have the camera -- I know the specs difference, but very interested in learning more from the folks that have used both.
