Canon 1D X Raw Files -- Amazing

This image was an experiment I did back in July to see just how far the 1D X files could be pushed.

https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=335e18a4c22a5621&id=335E18A4C22A5621%21166

The photo was underexposed by at least 5 stops on a cloudy day and then pushed to the absolute maximum (+10.0 exposure) by Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.1. A little bit of noise adjustment was then made. But no curves, or any other fancy manipulation was done.

Enjoy the killer... the 1D X!!

Update: Same scenario, overexposed by 3 stops. Pulled to match the previous image.

https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=335e18a4c22a5621&id=335E18A4C22A5621%21167

The underexposed photo was at 1/1250th of a second.

The overexposed photo was at 1/5th of a second.

Let's count:

0 stops: 1/5th (pretend like this is ISO 100)
1/3 stop: 1/8th (iso 125)
2/3 stop: 1/16th (iso 160)
1 2/3 stop:: 1/32nd (iso 320)
2 2/3 stops: 1/64th (iso 640)
3 2/3 stops: 1/125th (iso 1250)
4 2/3 stops: 1/250th (iso 2500)
5 2/3 stops: 1/500th (iso 5000)
6 2/3 stops: 1/1000th (iso 10,000)
7 stops: 1/1250th (iso 12,800)

And the photo itself has several more stops of dynamic range in it.

Cool thing is the comparison with the ISO. Basically, this camera can take a single photo and capture an effective range of exposures as if multiple photos were taken ranging from ISO 100 to ISO 12,800.

What would you do?

Well I've done a ton of business with Adorama in the past. So this isn't just a one time deal where I sent gear in to have evaluated for money or a trade. I sent in my 1D Mark IV just to see what they'd offer, and I didn't like it. So they sent it back. Well, they sent something back. I opened the package up tonight and it was a 5D Mark II, not the 1D Mark IV that I sent. I immediately contacted them and they said they are on it and would contact me back as soon as possible. This was about 3-4 hours ago. How upset do you get and how much do you push this so early? I'm beyond upset. Depending on the outcome of this I may never do business there again.

Canon in San Jose?

Anyone know what happens at this Canon location? I drive past it at least twice a day and haven't had the time to stop in. It has an orange grove as a neighbor across the street with the rolling hills to the east.

Is it a corporate office? service center? r&d site?

http://www.yelp.com/biz/canon-usa-inc-san-jose

I've browsed the top Google results and didn't come up with much. Any knowledge here?

GODOX Propac PB820

Anyone used these? I'm so tired of charging AA's with my 3 CP-E3 battery-packs it's not even funny, and EVERY time I want to use them the batteries have drained. I used 2700 mAh Sanyo AA's and after a week I had to charge again (they haven't been used)

So now I want something I can plug directly to the batterypack and charge them all at the same time.

I read good reviews, and the price is great and I've looked inside one and it looks pretty good!

My QUESTION IS:

How does it hold up after a year or three's use? Do they keep their power level, do they fall apart? I'm not a person who throws them to the ground two times a day, but they will be put to use.

Lenses listed in Group A, Group B, Group C... Why?

http://downloads.canon.com/CDLC/EOS_1DX_AF_Guide_CDLC_Updated_June_2012.pdf See page 37.

In the autofocus guide for the 1Dx and 5D III, Canon divides their lens lineup into groups that allow different numbers of cross type sensors to operate. I thought this was strictly a function of aperture, but if you look at the lists, that does not seem to be the case.

Does anyone know what other factors might be involved?

Thanks,

Mike

<strong>NEW POWERSHOT CAMERAS ‘ZOOM PHOTOGRAPHERS IN’ CLOSE TO THE ACTION AND OFFER FAST AUTO FOCUS SPEEDS TO HELP CAPTURE THE MOMENT IN STUNNING QUALITY</strong></p>
<p>LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., August 21, 2012 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced two new additions to the Canon PowerShot digital camera lineup designed for the on-the-go photographer looking for large extended zoom in compact easy-to-use cameras. For all those times when the action is just out of reach, Canon offers two new super-zoom solutions, the new PowerShot SX500 IS and PowerShot SX160 IS digital cameras featuring an impressive 30x and 16x optical zoom, respectively. Both cameras are equipped with Canon’s latest advancements in auto focus (AF) technology enhancing AF speeds over previous SX-series cameras to capture the excitement in brilliant clarity and quality. The extremely responsive high-speed AF lets you capture great shots as they happen, with significantly reduced lag time. With incredible zoom capabilities, fast responsive AF, stunning resolution and easy-to-use features, both cameras are stylish and compact to take along for any occasion to help you get a good shot from the back of a school theatre or the sidelines of a game.</p>
<p>Borrowing from Canon’s optics expertise, these new models include long-reaching zoom and Canon’s Intelligent Image Stabilization technology which analyzes the scene being shot and compensates for camera movement for steady images and video even while panning or walking. In addition to the great optical features, both of these new cameras are also equipped with Canon’s Smart AUTO mode – which will automatically apply optimum image settings for 32 different shooting scenarios. In this mode, the camera automatically identifies the ideal setting, making high-quality images easy for anyone to capture.</p>
<p>“In photography, there is no substitution for great optical zoom and while our customers may not always be close to the action, these cameras are designed to help bring their photos and videos in close, with great image resolution and quality as if they were standing right there,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A.</p>

</strong>With a 24mm wide angle lens and an incredible 30x optical zoom (up to 720mm) packed into a compact design, the PowerShot SX500 IS enables users to pull subjects in close and capture stunning, high-quality images with a 16.0 megapixel sensor and powerful DIGIC 4 image processer. With such incredible zoom capabilities, the camera is also equipped with Canon’s Intelligent IS system for rock-steady images and HD video even at full-telephoto zoom. A 3.0-inch LCD screen makes operation easy and intuitive, and displays the scene with brilliant clarity. In addition, the camera is equipped with a Zoom Framing Assist feature – a Canon technology that makes zooming-in and framing subjects quick and effortless. This feature is a tremendous benefit for those times when you lose sight of your subject after zooming in. By simply pressing the Zoom Framing Assist button located on the lower front left of the camera, the lens will quickly zoom out to help you re-locate and frame your subject. A frame box appears on the LCD as a guide to place your subject in and releasing the button quickly brings the camera back to the initial “zoomed-in” range. The lens retraction and extension is faster using the Zoom Framing Assist button than the zoom lever, and allows the photographer to keep the camera more stable for the shot, this is particularly helpful for those trying to zoom in and shoot pictures of animals or moving subjects.</p>

</strong>With its compact design and powerful 16x optical zoom, the PowerShot SX160 IS is a versatile camera with a dynamic optical zoom range from 28mm wide up to 448mm, perfect for everyday use. This model also features a 16.0-megapixel sensor, DIGIC 4 image processor and Canon’s Intelligent IS system – providing ultimate functionality in a compact, easy-to-carry design. The camera is always ready to shoot video with its dedicated movie button to start and stop recording HD video instantly and uses the full range of optical zoom when recording, without sacrificing HD resolution. The camera’s large 3.0-inch LCD provides a beautiful display when shooing and recording video or simply scrolling through menu options. Powered by AA batteries, the PowerShot SX160 IS is ideal for easy and convenient shooting on-the-go even when charging a battery may not be an option. The PowerShot SX160 IS digital camera will be available in red or black.</p>

<strong>The Big Megapixel

</strong>The rumours are starting to fly with Photokina around the corner. Below is the first spec list of a camera said to be Canon’s big megapixel entry.</p>
<p>Please remember, the “EOS-3D” name has been rumoured about since about 2005. With every major photo show, we get lots of mentions of its existence. What I do think is different now, is the “3D” name makes a bit more sense. I think this because the “5D” name is no longer the automatic “big megapixel” camera in the Canon lineup. There is room and separation between a 22mp 5D and a 40mp 3D. My other issue with the “3D” name, is the camera wouldn’t be 3D. However, add the “X” at the end and that should help alleviate any confusion with consumers (believe me, there would be).</p>
<p>Below is a spec list I received today, take it with a large grain of salt as it is a new contact. I’m still on the fence as to whether or not we’ll see another DSLR for Photokina, lots of conflicting information (<em>Thanks Canon</em>).</p>
<p><strong>Canon EOS-3D X Specifications</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>46 MP</li>
<li>3.7 frame per second</li>
<li>Dual DIGIC 5+</li>
<li>ISO: (25) 50-6400 (12800)</li>
<li>AF: Same as 1DX</li>
<li>USB 3</li>
<li>CF+SD</li>
</ul>
<p>Another feature mentioned about the camera is better heat dissipation of the sensor compared to other EOS cameras. Apparently, this results in industry leading low ISO performance.</p>

First YN-622 Review (video)

This is pulled from another user on a different forum - http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1212530&page=8 - (also, feel free to merge it with the existing thread, I just wanted to make sure people would see this)

http://youtu.be/NTUuFGTHskY

Here are my conclusions.

At first it took me a second to get these started, but then I realized I accidentally set them in the wrong mode (holding channel for 3 seconds putting them in mix mode).

-Currently they don't work on my 1d mark IV, but yongnou has contacted me and is working on a fix. They currently work on my 5d3 and my 7d. I honestly thought they'd work fine on the 1d and 7d, but oh well.

-The build appears roughly the same as the pixel kings, minus the weirdo shape the kings had. The locking ring seems nicer and the metal hot shoe appears beefier (from what I remember, I sold mine two weeks ago).

-the pixel kings came with a nice carrying case and cables. the YN622's didnt, I wish they did. Looks like I'll just have to find a way to safely transport them.

-Quick start up time / shoot time. You can see in the video I shoot with the transceiver (tx) off, then turn it on and shoot right away without any issues.

-Manual / ETTL ratios is very easy to control especially on the 5d mark III. This is exactly how I expected them to work.

-MIX mode i haven't gotten into yet, again, i JUST got them today and literally opened them, and started filming.

-haven't used these with any YN560's yet, but im assuming they work just like dumb triggers

-i CLEARLY need to read the manual.

-I wish there was a USB port for possible firmware updates.

-LOVE the fact that they are transceivers!!

-Didn't test long distance, but will this weekend at my wedding. Since it's on 2.4gHz i'm sure it will be fine.

DragonFly Series

A perfect landing on the antenna of my car. This beauty actually waited patiently for me to get my camera and almost seems to pose for me. It was as if she was looking at me with equal curiosity. Both shots came about 20 seconds apart. The one is framed with the soft blue sky and the second was taken from a different angle. Then after she flew away she came back for another series. A true gift as I have always wanted to get a shot like this of these beautiful creatures.

Low Light options

I have a canon t2i and a canon 15-85, 50 f1.8, 55-250 lenses (no tripod)

What the best option to compliment my lenses and give me better low light capability.
I will be at a cousins indoor wedding and want to be able to take some nice pictures, also when traveling in museums, restaurants, etc.. however I find that the 50mm is to long for those occasions.

I was thinking one of the following 3 options:
1. buy a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 nonVC and use built in flash if needed.
2. use existing 15-85 and buy a Sigma 30mm f1.4
3. use existing 15-85 and buy 430ex flash

each option costs ~$300-$400

Which option will give me the best results and are the best bang for the buck???

anyone have any cures for lenses fogging/dew during astrophotography?

I've only recently had this happen but now that i'm doing more of this thing it's bound to happen all the time. I was really surprised to see it on my images. I didn't see a thing on the LCD out in the field, but i'll be looking closely in the future. I've added an image that most clearly shows the problem. thanks

How to take more than one photo on self timer with 5D Mk III?

Hi There!
I'm pretty sure that on my 550D I was able to set the self timer to take up to 10 frames in a row on self timer, but can't for the life of me find in the manual or on the camera how to do this on the 5D Mark III, I can only find how to take one single shot with either a 2 second wait, or 10 second wait. Does anyone know if this is possible at all?
Thanks!
Sam.
