Trip to Montana, Landscapes

Went to Montana for a couple of weeks, had some great views and thought I should share. Shot with a Canon T1i and a 50mm 1.8 II or 17-40mm F/4L. I got a Neewer 52mm ND fader and feel in love with it, did not remove all that much sharpness and was only five dollars, also used a Dolica AX620 B100 Proline which I got for $40 and I would highly recommend it, it was light and had a great ball head. Please give feedback!

AF Assist for Canons 61/41 AF

I covered a major event in Trinidad this weekend - its called a carnival band launch, is a promotion for Mardi Gras 2013 held by all the major carnival promoters in Trinidad. It was an outdoor night amphitheater type environment where the conditions except for the main presentation are all low lighting conditions. I posted on
some of the challenges and summarized the shooting for what was my first major night event with the 5DM3 on my blog. I am amazed that you can get shots like this http://www.wilmark.johnatty.com/harts2013/h30876b03#h30876b03 at ISO25600, and there are many more at ISO25600. The biggest challenge is getting focus fast enough. Its a real pain. I wish somebody designed something to make the Canon 61/41 system perform better in dim light situations. Like a shoe mounted LED lamp. I know i can put a full flash and just maybe use the preflash, but this makes the set up heavier. And that issue with the black squares really messes things up too. You can only get focus when there is enough character in your framing with light in it. This really hampers your ability to use the low light capabilities of the new cams. What do you do to solve this issue? Are there any commercial products?

17 ts-e vs 24 ts-e

Hi all.

I want to buy the 17 or 24 ts-e, and I need some help which one to buy.

My photography besides portraits is landscape city scape architecture. I have a 5D mark III and mostly I use it when I shoot this kind of pictures the 17-40 with a Hoya ND 400 filter and a Hoya MC circular polarizer. And yeah even at f/8 f/11 is way to soft. I would like if it possible a sharpness close to my 70-200 2.8 IS II, thats why I chose this two lenses. Most of my shots are done within 20mm so, I like to shoot wide.

What I thought to buy is the 17mm, and if I need closer I will put a 1.4 TC III and if thats not enough I put it on a 7D.

My concerns are the lack of filters, the lack of hood.

Does anyone own(ed) both and tell me an opinion?

I tried to read everything what I found about tilt shift lenses but I still dont understand the following:
If I buy the 24 and I put my camera on a tripod, and I put let say a tall building in the picture, and it doesent fit in, and I would need a wider lens to cover the building, can I just tilt or shift the lens and take a few shots and than I put them in PS together as I would do with a panorama shot? Will it look exactly as it would have been taken with a 17 tse, or it will have bigger distortion?

Cheers

Going to FF from APS-C, need lens advice

I'm looking at either a 28-300 or a 70-300 lens to use with a FF body. I use 70-200 f/2.8L IS that I use with my APS-C and I want to make up for what I lose on the long end. I'd like your answers to:

1. What are the pros and cons between the L and non-L versions of the 70-300 besides the cost?
2. Is the zoom mechanism of the 28-300 as much of a nuisance as the 100-400 that I used to have? Does the zoom range make it worthwhile? Is it overly heavy?
3. I have the 1.4x and 2X teleconverters, would using them on my 70-200 be better than going with either 70-300 or 28-300?

Thanks in advance.

The Mirrorless Future

I was away from the site for a while and I see my profile, comments, and “karma” (good move CR) are all gone.

I saw the Canon product road map and chuckled a bit. Yes, Canon will put out more of the single reflex systems with hefty prisms, slap-down mirrors that “lock up”….with incremental tweaks to what is essentially last century ideas…to squeeze out profits with what they already have to the very last, wheezing, painful, breath. This is how companies work; this is how Canon will work, as long as they possibly can.

They will tease; introduce smaller mirrorless “systems”, just to keep a Canon-head like myself from jumping ship to a full frame competitor with less-storied lenses. We complain, we moan, write long comments on blogs for other Canon-heads, but at the end, we are like those vacant-eyed calves they put on the conveyer belt… helplessly, meekly, bleating, we go down the “road map” to become yummy veal for Canon ;)

But the future is now… some of what Canon does will depend on what the competitors do and what the market demands. I say “some” as one can never underestimate the sheer optimism (naïveté?) of a diehard fan who will hang on tooth and nail even if the platform is being overtaken, not in steps, but in bounds.

I am happy with my Canon gear for now, as with everything, it is a balance; no one is perfect. I am sure Miss America has one tit smaller than the other if you look hard enough ;) Only a pedantic fool will expect his Canon SLR to bring his beer in high resolution at 90 fps with a DR of 2 million ;). For the size of the sensor, the resolution, the quality of lenses, and the “I am used to it” factor… Canon is good. They are delivering at a slow, steady, dollar-squeezing pace.

But to get back to the product road map, some of this will be dictated by the market forces. Full frame mirrorless in a decent form-factor will have to come at a faster pace than I glean from that road map picture CR posted. And I predict it will … it has to.

Because, as with everything, there is an end to even the mindless optimism and naïveté of the diehard fan. Canon is likely to drag it out for another 4 to 5 years… with “almost there” teases to keep you buying… we will have to wait and see.

But here is a sacred promise I make in the presence of other vacant-eyed calves on the conveyer belt… ID-X is my last miorred SLR… I do not plan on buying anymore “intermediate”…incremental flagships.

Enjoy your veal! ;)

Cleaning Camera - some questions

I do take care of my camera (and lenses)
I am curious how you do that.

1. What do you clean on your camera (what parts)
2. Do you detach parts of your camera for cleaning? If so, what?
3. And what do you use for cleaning for what parts of the camera?
4. How often a year do you clean your camera (or after what kind of shooting) ?

And, how often do you replace your memory cards? Or do you continue to use them until they start to show errors?

Just bought the shorty 40mm...

Headed to England next week on a 2 week trip... I thought this lens would come in handy on my old XSi for my wife to use. Should basically turn it into a "P&S" that she can walk around with easily. I'll probably stick it on my 7D every now and again too when I don't want to pack much gear for an outing...

Has anyone used this on an XSi? Any pictures of it on an XSi?

When it comes in I'll definitely post a few ;-)

More Big Megapixel Talk

The next EOS-1

While Canon called the EOS-1D X an amalgamation of the EOS-1 line, I don’t think everyone truly believed that the 1D-X was going to be the only flagship level camera in the lineup forever. It may have bought them some time while they got the EOS-1D X to market and worked on getting the EOS-1D C to market as well.

New Camera at the Olympics

I received two reports from the London Olympics that a 40mp+ camera was being tested by a couple of select photographers. The cameras housing was that of the EOS-1D X. It was also mentioned the camera had a significant framerate for a resolution that high, one mentioned it at 8fps in RAW. There were other unspecified “new features and technology” in the camera body.

A seperate source has said it is possible that Canon will announce a big megapixel camera in 2012 for release sometime in 2013, however that has yet to be decided within Canon.

Another 1DX issue isolated - flash related - but need help replicating

Ok so I am going to get my replacement body tomorrow (flew in too late to pick up on saturday). However I have just come back from a pre-wedding shoot this afternoon and the same flash related issue popped up again.

Equipment list:

1DX
600EX RT
EF 70-200 F2.8 L IS USM II
Sandisk 60MB/s 8GB CF and Sandisk 90MB/s 32GB CF (i normally use match pairs but didn't have time to clear the full card prior to the shoot)

Issue:
-------

Shooting in broad daylight, Direct flash being used for fill, AV Priority, F4, ISO 200-800+ (HTP on), EC +1/3 and FEC -1 2/3, HSS.

Now in single shot mode it works fine. But i had the couple move around a bit so switched to AI Servo and this is where the issue begins.

The camera literally locks up - screens are powered, vf is powered but the lens doesn't rack in portrait or landscape, depressing either shutter does nothing, powering off the body does nothing.

Turning the flash off and turning the body off fixes the issue for a few frames but after a good 20 frames it repeated the issue.

-Switching lens to a 50mm and the issue didn't come up again.
-When this first happened overseas I was using the same configuration 600EX with 70-200.
-On a 7D this same config doesn't have the same issue.

Thoughts?

learning bike shoot

Hi again. I am planning to go malaysian Motogp in Oct so I figure I would go out and practise first on my 24-105 before I dive in and buy a 70-200 f4.

BUT, most of my shots came out blur AGAIN.
I was trying to 'pan' a little. exif should be available

any and all comments and suggestions welcome

Good Wireless Mic For Video??

I have a canon hf m500 and am looking for a wireless mic I can use with it that I can use for video. There are a lot out there but so many say the ones for $100 are crappy and I don't want to spend like $600. I'd be using outdoors and in doors. When outdoors the camera would be aside filming me I guess while I take pictures type of deal while I talk. So something with decent range that's affordable and compatible with the camera lol.

Why do my photos not look sharp pic included....

HI guys I picked up a 7D and a 400mm 5.6 but I am having trouble getting sharp images. I also have a Pentax K5 and have no problems getting tact sharp with that.

for example here is a bird pic I took today I over exposed it because I was told to with the 7d to fix noise and such. I croped it a bit to lower the image size.

the settings I used was ISO320, 400mm, f5.6, 1/250 and I was using a tripod.

Survival of the fittest/luckiest

About a year ago, I (almost?) inducted myself into the photography Darwin Awards as I watched as my 20D/24-105 fly off my truck box @ ~50mph onto the road, resting finally on the middle line. It was inside my dry bag as I was headed out to do some kayaking but not padded or anything. The battery and door blew apart and a small chunk of the battery area went south as well. A small bungee later and some glue and it still works to this day. The lens worked for about another 8 months, suffering only a few missing edge plastic near the main objective. Could you share your close calls or not so close regarding mishaps/bonehead moves and the durability of your equipment so I feel better.

BG-E11 alternatives: which one?

Hi,

I'm currently looking for a grip for my 5DIII. Unfortunately, I'm limited in budget for the next months and then, I'm looking for the alternatives. My 7D have a Canon grip and I'm really happy with it, but after reading several user reviews of "non official" grip, I think I can go with it for now.

The first model announced was the Pixel Vartex (some discussions are on this forum) for $78-85

I also discovered that Phottix have one.

I saw some other models, cheaper, but they doesn't look like the official one, and I prefer buying a non offcial grip which is better of course...

Then do you already own one? Do you have some advise (except buying the official one)?
Thanks!

100mm f/2.8L IS vs 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II for Macro

I am trying to decide on which lens to get next. I want to play with Macro but I like the versatility of the 70-200.

My question is: wouldn't a 70-200mm at 200mm, even with a minimum focus distance of 4 ft., get me a closer look than a 100mm at a min. focus distance of 1 ft.? Will the picture be sharper with the 100mm Macro? I don't know the math to calculate and I don't have the lenses on hand to test it out.

I'm leaning towards the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II. From what I've read, images are very sharp through this lens. They both have IS, they are both f/2.8 apertures. I can use the 70-200 for portraits...i guess I can use the 100mm for portrait work as well. But it seems the macro lens is a specialty lens. Eventually, I'd like to own both but would the 70-200mm get me by on macro work at all? (I hope this is not a stupid question!)

Yes, I've heard about the 180mm f/3.5L and I would be open to considering this lens. I have a 24-105 so I'm also concerned about adding some variety to the focal lengths I already own. I've got the wide end covered but am seriously lacking on the telephoto side. It seems the 100mm macro would only be used for macro.

Any insight from experienced users would be great. BTW, I'm shooting on a 60D. I will eventually purchase a 5D mkiii and keep the 60D as a 2nd body.

Happy shooting to you all =). I look forward to reading your replies.

1D X won't wake from sleep

I've been a long time watcher of the canonrumors and forum websites. My first post here.

I'm trying to narrow down a problem I am having with my 1D X and EF 180 f3.5 L Macro being used with the EF 1.4x III Extender. If the camera goes into sleep mode it won't wake up by pushing the shutter button. Turning the power switch OFF and back to ON the camera is unresponsive (it won't turn back ON). Removing the lens and Extender from the camera and reattaching them, the camera comes back to normal operation. Also removing the lens from the Extender (leaving the Extender on the camera) operation comes back. (Edit: Turning the camera OFF and back ON before it goes into sleep also results in normal operation.) With the Macro lens alone operation is normal.

I have tried this combination of lens and Extender on my 7D and 5D Mark III and it works perfectly. Using the Extender with my EF 500mm f4 L IS and EF 70-200 f2.8 L II IS on the 1D X, again operation is normal.

Does anyone have this combination of lens, camera and Extender who could duplicate what I am seeing?

I have contacted Canon through E-mails and they don't have a resolution for me yet.

Thanks in advance for any help you may have to offer.

Weather sealed 1D4?

My 1D4 is/was in mint condition. I bought it used with a tiny number of shutter actuations. I took it out and it started to rain. No problem thinks me, its weather sealed, a little rain wont do it any harm. Well, it stopped working. Dead. Sent it to Canon repair center, just been returned, "uneconomic to repair". So a pro body, weather sealed against rain etc goes out in one rain storm and dies. Thats £3000 down the drain. I've spent many 10's of thousands on Canon gear and im furious. The 1DS in the same storm works a treat. Any advice on what should be done next other than cancelling my 500f4 and moving to Nikon?

NEED HELP!!! 70-200 F/2.8L IS II USM vs. 70-200 F/4L IS USM

Ok fellow Photogs,

I know someone just posted a very similar post but he was comparing the f/4 IS w/the f/2.8 non IS.
Canon's having another rebate and I just purchased the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II USM for $2200. However reading some of the posts from the other similar question, I'm starting to think, should I return the 2.8 IS II & get the f/4 IS for a $1,000 less and use that to get my next desired lens, the 35mm f/1.4 selling for $1329 now at B & H. (total of these latter 2 options will be $2528, which is only $328 more than what I paid for the f/2.8 but at least w/this option, I have 2 lenses.

Now, I shoot w/the 5D Mark 2 w/grip and have the speedlite 430EX. I also currently have the 24-105L and 50 f/1.8 II. I do not shoot action, no sports, etc. I do portraitures, scenery, vacations, indoors, and assist w/weddings here and there. What's the better option for me:

1) stick w/the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II or
2) go w/the 70-200 f/4 IS & 35 mm f/1.4 (or something else/a prime you would recommend in this price range for what I'm shooting).

Please share you valuable insights
Thanks a lot!!
