Problem with 5D III?

I am currently testing my new Sigma 180mm f/2.8 macro lens with my 5D 3 and I am having a weird problem. When I take a photo and look at it on the rear screen of the camera, it shows black circular lines at the edges. Depending on the magnification factor of the lens it can be in the corners of the screen (at 1:1.25) or almost a full circle (at 1:1) But if its at 1:30 or something higher there are no lines.

Here is the same thing zoomed in on the camera.
img2770t.jpg

But when I copy the image to computer and open it up in photoshop or lightroom, everything is fine.
img5873y.jpg

It only happens when shooting at 1:1 or close to it, when I take images at 1:10 or something, everything is fine.

When I look through the viewfinder, there are no lines.
When I look through Live View there are no lines.
When I open the RAW on my computer there are no lines.

When I look at the picture on the camera, there are lines.

I've never had this problem with 70-200 II or other lenses but I never had a lens that had 1:1 magnification and this ONLY happens at 1:1 mag or close to it.

It seems like there is some issue with camera's software that creates a preview of the shot, so it can display it very quickly.

Has anyone seen anything like that before? It's really annoying.

New 600mm f/4L IS Mk II - availability?

I am wondering if anyone has any experience with buying one of these and/or any insight as to when they might be available. My local camera store (Canadian) has told me that it could be anywhere from 6 months to a year before one would be available and that is only if I order it now. This seems a bit crazy, but then look at how long it took Canon to get the 1D X out. Anyone have any ideas as to how long it would take, or what the "holdup" is? Why so long to get one? Thanks.

Canon 2x Extender III AF Performance

Hello,

I took my new 5D3 out for a field test at a motor sport event and was very impressed with the subject tracking capabilities. I was using my 70-200mm and the AF Servo maintained focus from the cars coming into view all the way to flying past me. Perfect.

After just going full-frame I'm thinking about getting a little more reach and am thinking about the 2x extender. I'm happy to take the hit on aperture and IQ (extender III with 70-200 IS II seem to work pretty well together) but my question is about the drop in AF speed.

I read somewhere that AF speed is reduced by 75% but what does that mean in the real world? The lens I want to use it on focuses pretty quickly so is quarter of the speed still ok or an age?

Also, once focus is acquired, will the 5D3 still be able to track the subject or will it drop out due to the AF slower speed?

I'd love to hear from anybody that has this combo and has used it for motor sports. Is the extender mainly for static subjects or those moving across the way - rather than subjects whizzing towards you with speed.

No AF: Broken flexfoil in 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

Yesterday the AF on my 18-55 IS MkI suddenly became erratic and then stopped working. A quick search on the net shows this to be a common problem because the flexfoil that gives the focus ring position eventually breaks due to poor design. Disassembly showed this indeed to be the case on my copy.

I would like to replace the 18-55 with a Mk II version. Filter & hood I can then fit on the new one. Does anybody know if Canon fixed this problem in the new release of this lens?

Note: The 18-55 I use with my 400D when I want to travel with a light & 'expendable' kit. Not really inclined to use a more expensive lens for this purpose :)

Another help me pick a lens yay...35L or 24-105L

This will be my first L lens. Currently have a 50D and nifty fifty and have been borrowing my friends 16-35L for way too long. I am an amateur and mostly shoot landscapes, portrait and some indoor events for fun. I'd like a nice walk around lens but I'm in love the contrast and sharpness of the 35L. I will end up getting both someday but I can't decide which to get first. It would probably be a year before I get the next one. Just looking for other opinions...thanks!

dirty 1 DX --- Dirty 5D MKIII --- does Canon have quality control at all?

I'm starting to wonder if Canon actually have any quality control before send cameras out..... when I got my first 5D MKIII the sensor right out of the box was dirty... full of speckles... didn't come off with the camera sensor cleaning.... sent it back.... got another one.... also dirty... and with a little hair inside of the prism...

Now I get my 1D X ... also stuck speckles in the sensor that will not come off with the camera sensor cleaning... I'm really disappointed in Canon...

Sent my 5D MKII to be cleaned, came back worst that I sent it.... sent it back.... came back a bit cleaner, but not as clean as I can do it at home..... usually you don't see this kind of speckles in regular photos, but when you are making macros with a lens like MP-E 65.... any minimal speckle is a nasty black point...

Am I crazy thinking that a new camera should have a pristine sensor????

Trying to post this with an image but it does not work... :-(

AFMA Callibration - How much is too much?

So I am setting up the replacement 1DX i received today. On the previous 1DX, I only had to calibrate 2 lenses. the 85L needed +4 and the 24L needed +5. With the new 1DX I am at +17 on the 24L and +12 on the 85L. I needed to give the 135L +4. which required 0 on the last. I know each camera is difference but should the AF be that far off? Maybe i am just being way to picky but would hate to think that the camera took a big jolt during shipping...

Center Pinch Lens Caps

I was wondering if anyone has tried these ebay cheapie lens caps? They are low cost with free shipping, so I don't expect a whole lot. If one breaks, I'd just toss it. I was thinking of buying a few of each size I yse.
These could be much easier to remove when a hood is on the lens. I liked the Nikon ones when I had my D800.

Carnival Street Party

Street Carnival in one of the biggest carnival (mardi gras) events in the world. These pictures were taken there in 2011. Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago is the most significant event on the islands' cultural and tourism calendar, with numerous cultural events running in the lead up to the street parade on Carnival Monday and Tuesday.

I am interested in seeing any other Carnival/Mardi gras Events In other parts of the world and how a photographer should capture it. I was having a conversation with other photographers that lamnted that this culturally significant event was reduced to women in gstrings and a few feathers.

1DX err70

Hi all

I've read about the err80 problems which luckily I haven't encountered yet, maybe because I haven't used it with 85L.

But
0.5 sec exposure +/- 3 EV Bracketing (ISO 160 at F/13) causes the shutter to stay open and the camera displays err70 as you can see in the photo attached. This happens with or without a memory card installed.
This is happened on the last (In my case the longest exposure) It works fine if the base exposure I start with is at or faster than 0.5 seconds. The longest successful exposure I got with bracketing was 4.5 seconds.
I am using a 70-200 f/2.8 IS , it first happened with a 2x tc on. Same deal with a 135 f/2.

Interestingly enough, if I change to f/2.8, It works fine at the same shutter speed with braketing, :/

If anyone has any idea or can reproduce this error I would really appreciate any info. I will be contacting Canon tomorrow and see if they have any information.
Sometimes it doesn't display that error and just stays there as if it is shooting the photo but doesn't nothing for minutes straight at what point I restart the camera.

Thanks!

*UPDATE*
There is a firmware issue causing this. Something to do with the timer and long exposures. The next firmware update (no ETA) should fix it. No hardware needs to be touched to fix it. No need to send your camera in if you are seeing this particular issue

Rattling thumbwheel on 5d mk 3 ?

Hello.
I just got my new 5d mk 3 couple of days ago. I notice, that when I'm turning the big thumbwheel on the back, there is a variation of the clicking sound. It's not going all the way (360*) on the same noise level. It's feels like its going smooth for 3/4 of the round and the rest sounds like a much stronger clicking. Is this something to worry about?
Is there anybody who notice this?

Announcements in August [CR1]

What’s coming in August?

Some information came today explaining what will be coming from Canon in the month of August. Currently it sounds like 3 different announcement dates for various Canon imaging products.

First up?

Printers

We’re told that we should see new ImagePROGRAF printers sometime very soon, possibly next week.

PowerShot

New PowerShot cameras at the end of August is almost a given. I am told we’ll get a true replacement to the G12. The G1X was never really meant to replace the lower end cousin. I am also told we’ll see a small camera with an f/1.9 lens. There was no mention of specifications for either camera.

I also expect a new superzoom or two for the PowerShot lineup.

EOS M

I find this a bit unlikely, but it was also mentioned we’ll see a second EOS-M camera announced in the fall, probably not before Photokina though. It would be the “pro” model. I’m confident one is coming, I’m just not sure it’s coming that soon.

A new wide angle zoom lens

A new wide angle zoom for EF should be announced before Photokina in September. Could it be the long awaited EF 14-24?

EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x

There are tons of these lenses in London currently, I expect an announcement this fall and pretty fast availability.
