Regrets -- Your One Missed Picture?

.
"Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention "

-Frank Sinatra
My Way

I just looked at a picture of a saguaro cactus and suddenly realized I never took a picture of one. From 1996 to 1999, I lived in Tucson -- could have stepped out on my balcony anytime and got a picture. Sadly, I wasn't taking pictures during that period. I don't think I took more than one or two rolls of film pictures in those three years.

Anyway, it got me thinking about missed pictures, ones that good, avid photographers might regret having missed. What was a picture that, for one reason or another, you just didn't get -- one you could have but it didn't happen? I don't mean going to the moon and snapping one of Armstrong's footprints. I mean one you probably could have taken, one you missed, one that failed that will never happen again.

Mine may be a saguaro in a desert sunset, maybe up in the purplish light of Sabino Canyon. I'll have to think about it. I don't think I'll ever get back to the Sonoran Desert, so that's a regret.

I'm curious. How about you?

What is meant by Shutter count in 5D Mk III menu?

I opened the box after receiving what I thought was a brand new 5DMk III from Adorama and was going through the menus and found a menu titled, "Shutter count" and to the right the number 209...Canon support tells me that this is some form of file numbering system in place from the factory and totally unrelated to shutter count as it is labeled. Why would it mean anything other than shutter count? That's like saying that the white balance setting is really the aperture setting isn't it? : ) I think I purchased a used camera under false pretenses. Would any of you concur?

Where can I find a 24-70 Series 1 sample file?

All,
I will be upgrading and have preordered a 24-70 Series 2. But for my current Series 1 I would like to know how the sharpness and/or CA stacks up. Can anyone contribute the location of sample files that can be reliable comparisons with which I can judge the performance of my existing lens? I know the subjects of my tests will be different but I think I can judge based on knowledge of the subjects I see in the sample files.

These files would have to be available at 100%, preferably not jpegs... a tough requirement. I will look on the www.slrgear.com site run by Imaging Resource (www.imaging-resource.com); I would like more than one source.

Thanks, in advance, for suggestions.

New to Canon Rumors

Hello all,

This is my first post in the forum so please be gentle with me.. I have been reading through the forum for the past six months tracking the slow progress of the 1DX and other things that have caught my eye during this time..

A little about myself if anyone is interested.. Im 23 ( just ) and am living in "sunny" North Devon in the UK, I work in a nation wide camera shop ( If you live in the UK then will know what shop I'm on about ) I truly enjoy my job working with photographic equipment and giving my advice to people.. Iv been into photography for over 8 years starting off with a Fuji S5000 bridge camera ( got to start somewhere ) and loved it..

Within the past 13 months I have seriously invested in Canon and mac equipment.. My kit list is rather long so I do apologise.. My first DSLR was a Canon 7D which was closely followed by the 5D MKII, Lens that I have in my kit are as following ( All canon lens )
15mm 2.8 Fisheye
50mm 1.4
24-70L 2.8
16-35L MKII 2.8
100mm L macro 2.8
70-200L 2.8 IS MKII
1.4x MKIII
2x MKIII
2 x 580 EX II

That was my entire kit until as of yesterday 03.09.12 where I was able to pick up my long awaited 1DX and 400mm 2.8 IS MKII and 24mm T&S .. One word to describe them AMAZING!!! With the little testing that iv done the results have just blown me away..

Now comes the sad part for me, as I was playing around with my new toy today I was taking some pics of my 3 year old black lab playing with a coiled pipe.. I got some great shots as she was jumping on this pipe right up until I got a mechanical error... I didn't think much of it as I thought it was a firmware issue. Removed the battery fired it back up fine, go to look through the viewfinder to see a weird looking line across... So I took the lens off and BANG out fell the focus screen on to the floor :( so now I have a scratched dirty focus screen.. I tried compressed air to knock off anything before placing it back in the camera but its not good... I feel a little miffed, Im going to contact CPS tomorrow and see what they will do.. I should have photographed it with one of my other bodies before I did anything, now I feel like they might turn around and say I have to pay for the repairs :(

Anyway sorry that was such a long intro to me, hope to hear back

Cheers
Alex

Nikon D7000 vs Canon 7D In the AF Area + Others

I was wondering if anybody has practical experience shooting both the Nikon D7000 and the Canon 7d and had anything to say about the Autofocus accuracy. The Nikon D7000 - at least the one I have - seems to be having some focusing issues. I wanted to explore the Canon side of things (without necessarily dumping Nikon) and have always been interested in the Canon 7D. All other differences between them being aside, does anybody here have any practical experience shooting with both cameras and can they tell me if either one is generally significantly better, or is the AF accuracy in both expected to be the same?

Actually any other comments on the Canon 7d vs Nikon D7000 comparison (from a PRACTICAL point of view, I know the differences in specs and price!) appreciated.

Canon EOS-1D X AF at f/8 with the Kenko 1.4TC

From Arthur Morris

Arthur has written a great article about getting f/8 autofocus with the new Canon EOS-1D X. A lot of birders used the EF 800 f/5.6L IS with the Canon 1.4x TC & EOS-1D Mark IV for example. The biggest complaint with the EOS-1D X has been the inability to get f/8 autofocus.

However, with the Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DGX 1.4 teleconverter you can give the EOS-1D X the ability to autofocus at f/8 with the EF 800 f/5.6L IS. Another plus of using the Kenko teleconverter is you’re able to move the AF point at f/8. With the Canon teleconverter on say, the 1D Mark IV, you only had the center AF point active.

Arthur has posted lots of images to show the image quality that is possible with the Kenko 1.4x TC.

From Arthur Morris

Once I got down in the mud I discovered that AF with the the Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DGX 1.4x AF Teleconverter was fast and sure and accurate. I have been out every morning and afternoon since then and have totally fallen in love with the 1DX. That first afternoon I managed to get a huge gob of black, sticky, gooey much all over my brand new camera. It was a proper baptism.

A new 400mm suggested

There is a suggestion that we will see the announcement of a new EF 400 f/5.6L before Photokina in September. I would imagine such a lens would include IS, but I guess a lot of people assumed the same for a new EF 24-70 f/2.8L II.

Transition from crop to FF.

This is probably better suited for the lens forum but what the heck........Even though I had been a 35mm film guy for many years, and Canon as well of course, I sold my film gear to fund my purchase of of my first digital camera, a Canon 10D several years ago. After feeling I needed to update a couple of years ago, I decided to go with a 7D. Again, another crop body. A great camera no doubt and I love it. Now, I just bought a 5D2 and it's been quite a little visual reaquaintance with looking through a lens actually designed for FF and adjusting back to where things were visually before crop cameras. My 16-35mm 2.8L Mk2 is just wow on my 5D2 while on my 7D I thought is was almost just barely adaquate for a WA lens. My 24-70 is also great on it as well. My 70-200 will probably be living on my 7D with the other two reserved for the 5D2.

help-bizarre happening with 1DX and canon 50mm/f1.2L

Hello all, first time caller, long time listener. Looking at a couple of shots from yesterday, i noticed a very strange sensation on some shots taken with a 1dx and a canon 50mm f/1.2L. I've never quite seen anything like this before. color Ghosting around the gentleman with the flyer over his face and that rainbow line across the the back of the cameraman's head. Both the lens and body are new. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

back of the head is at 100iso 50mm f/1.e 1/1600 sec
man on stoop is at 100 iso 50mm f/2.8 1/500 sec - the effect around his right arm is particularly baffling.

Both are exported as shot with not correction of any sort.

A question about dust...

Hi, I have a question about how well the latest generation of cameras handle dust.

I have a trusty 5D mark 1 which I picked up new (but cheap!) when the mark 2 was introduced. It's undoubtedly a fab camera and if I'm brutally honest I can't strongly claim that my "capabilities" as an amateur photographer are constrained by what the camera can and cannot do.

I have 3 lenses that I use: the 16-35 f2.8L II, the 24-70 f2.8L USM and the 70-200 f2.8L IS USM, and invariably I need to swap from one to the other and back again when I'm out and about. Despite my best efforts, I do have problems with dust getting onto the sensor and I end up cleaning the sensor with pec pads / e2 solution before any significant trip - but although the camera starts off clean enough, a few days later and I'm back to square one.

My question is, does the latest generation of cameras fare much better? I know they have some sort of ultrasonic vibration mechanism built in, but how do folk get on with the dust issue these days? I'd love an excuse to pull the trigger on a new camera (e.g. a mark 3), what with the advances made with low light photography, live view and better autofocusing - all sound fantastic. But what about the dust?!!

Thanks!
Nige.

EX600RT with 7D and 60D HSS

I am reading conflicting information so am seeking some clarification. Will HSS mode work on my 7D and 60D with the new 600RT's in radio mode or do the flashes revert to optical mode to do HSS? I currently have a local buyer for my Pocket Wizard set and two 430EXII's and my intention was to get two of the new 600's with the money from my sale thinking the new set up would be easier to use. But I don't want to lose HSS in radio mode. I am reading some posts on POTN where they are stating that they are getting HSS with the older cameras in radio mode but I am concerned if they are using them indoors that perhaps optical mode is being used by the flashes and the users are mistakenly assuming radio mode is still working. Any observations here regarding this issue?

5D Mark II price

Hi, I was about to buy a 5D Mark II kit with the 24-105 from B&H yesterday and noticed that the price went up quite a bit from 2600 to 2800 and it seems to hit everywhere. Any idea if it's ever gonna come down (black friday, christmas, ...) or if it's gonna run out of stock any time soon? I guess the production lines have stopped by now. I don't have a big budget and every hundred counts.

Oh and I'm Canadian and the prices here are just through the roof with 15% sales tax so no way I can get it locally. And as far as I know, B&H and Adorama are the only ones that ship to Canada regardless of the limited USA warranty.

Thanks!

So on Saturday there was in Poland another American Football game. It was rather a show game than a serious competition. Below are some photos I managed to make with the 5D2 and 70-200 F4 L IS and a video.
