Profit to be made on mark iii?

So i preordered pretty early (12:40 est from B&H) and the camera is 3500. no tax or shipping cost. i just dont know if its the best idea for me to be spending all that money right now. if i get it in the first shipment do you think there is money to be made on ebay? wouldnt it be cheaper for europeans to buy from me for 4000 usd or something? im not a scammer i just wonder if i can make some money for a lens due to canons international pricing policies/availability of product

Canon 1Dx vs 5DIII vs Nikon D4 Processing Power

I have read several comparisons between these cameras questioning autofocus capabilities. One thing that doesn't get much discussion is the processing capability. With the 1Dx having dual digic 5+ processors, does that give it the raw computing power necessary for higher performance autofocus systems and lens control?

There has also been much debate about how much more added value the 1Dx has over the 5DIII, but I believe the autofocus will be much more accurate in the 1Dx over the 5DIII because of the double processors. But then I though, since the 5DIII shoots at half the frame rate, does it only need half the processing power? Autofocus performance may be the same.

Then there is the D4, with it's single processor. Will the 1Dx outperform it based solely on it's processing power?

Nikon Lens Prices

Hi folks,

I'm a long time lurker and am have been using a 1000D for four years. I'll be upgrading to a mid-level full frame this year. I have no huge investment in lenses and could go either way while I'm watching what pans out with regard to test outcomes re D800 v 5D MarkIII.

One often cited comment appears to be that Canon has superior and cheaper lenses.

I was just checking this assertion on camerapricebuster.com with regard to 70-200mm high quality zooms. I'm afraid I'm confused by the alphabeti-spaghetti of the Nikon lens nomenclature...

I've looked but can't find an answer to what the difference is between:

Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II @ £ 1,599-00 http://www.camerapricebuster.com/Nikon_AF-S_70-200mm_f2.8G_ED_VR_II_pc.html

and

Nikon AF-S VR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED@ £ 1,657-72 http://www.camerapricebuster.com/Nikon_AF-S_VR_70-200mm_f2.8G_IF-ED_pc.html

Does anybody know please? Even Google doesn't seem to know this one...

Overall, from a cursory look through my uneducated eyes it appears that Canon lenses are not reliably and significantly cheaper than Nikon lenses. Maybe in other markets? But not from what I can see in the UK.

If anybody can clarify the difference between these two Nikon 70-200mm Nikon zooms I'd appreciate it.

Now that I've finished typing I realise that this would probably have been better posted to Nikon Rumours :- ).

Help appreciated folks.

Cheers

Jon.

Focusing problem while using 50mm 1.4 on 7D

Hi,

I am having a weird problem with autofocus using the 50mm 1.4 on the 7D. Autofocus using the viewfinder is resulting in the images suffering from substantial blur. However, focusing at 10x using liveview is giving perfect focus.

I've tested considerably using a tripod and a cable release to eliminate any blur caused by camera shake but the problem remains as it is.

Any suggestions ...

Cinema Lenses for 5dMark lll

I have experience with 5D as still photographer. I have waited for HDSLRs to progress for film, and now upgrading to 5Dlll for filming documentary films. I am looking at Zeiss CP.2 and the Canon cinematic lenses. I have no experience with these cinematic lenses. I have been reading about differences between still and cinematic lenses, however, I have not seen any comments about using the cinema lenses for still photos.
Any opinions about whether the Zeiss or Canon cinematic lenses would also give excellent results as still photo lenses? I know they are manual lenses, and I am use to using manual lenses. Thanks for any thoughts by anyone using these lenses. Also, any thoughts on preferences for Zeiss or the Canon cinematic lenses.

5D mkIII untouched files for testing purposes (RAW)

All files are RAW and were taken with a 5D mkIII (preproduction model).

For dynamic range purposes (LetTheRightLensIn and Tijn, do you hear me? :D) :

ISO 100, 1/8000 lens cap on.
ISO 100, 3sec lens cap off.

And now the portraits.

At iso 3200 and 12800 you 'll notice a yellow line. It may be due to a weird sync effect from shutter speed/lights, but I'm not sure about it.

Dad shot with 5d mkIII+70-200 II
ISO 4000
Code:

For comparison reasons I took a couple of shots with my dad's 5D mkII+24-70.

70mm, f/4.5

ISO 3200

ISO 6400

I see a yellow stripe here too. Maybe it was some weird sync of lights and it was showing up when I was using high shutter speeds?

5D MK lll Intelligent Viewfinder and focusing screen reviews ?

With all the hands-on reviews of the MK lll, how about some comments on the Intelligent Viewfinder and focusing screen.
After using 1-D bodies for years I'm not crazy about having AF boxes on the screen of my MK ll, so I welcome the change in the new camera.
Can it be set up like 1-D so the selected AF lights up only briefly ?

How bright is the focusing screen and how well does it perform for manual focus ?

The best screen I ever had was the crisp and sharp, glass, all-matte K screen in my old F-1n film cameras. The gold standard for manual focusing.

Also, isn't odd that the viewfinder is described as APPROX 100%. It's either 100% or not, right ?

1.4x Teleconverter; the right choice?

I have a crop-frame Canon (T3i) and only 2 lenses; the lovely EF-S 17-55 f2.8, and an EF-S 55-250 which I lucked into as a give-away after said lens was the only surviving piece of equipment after a friend's camera bag got swiped.

Obviously I already have a native 1.6x distance multiplier due to the camera body.

My question is, would the 1.4x TC be a good purchase? Primarily, I'd think it'd be used to extend the 55-250. It is already magnified x 1.6 to essentially a 400mm telephoto. But if I add in a 1.4 TC, would I be able to get acceptable bird shots losing IQ and a stop or two?

I guess a TC could also give my 17-55 a wee bit of extra reach, but, hmmm.

Note: I am not terribly serious about the long distance shooting, so I kind of hate to buy an expensive telephoto. On the other hand, I hate to buy even the teleconverter if it is going to be unacceptably bad results.

Thanks all.

1Dx / 5D3 AF system limitations, a (perhaps stupid) question

So, per the DP review description,

"The 5D Mark III loses out to the Nikon D4 and D800 when it comes to use with slower lenses or long lens/teleconverter combinations, in that its cross-type points can only be used with lenses that are F4 or brighter (and the double-crosses with F2.8 and brighter lenses). Canon says there's a trade-off to be made and that its approach allows the sensor to be more accurate with the large aperture lenses it expects its customers to use, and allows the F4 cross-type sensors to be placed further towards the edge of the frame."

AF-points1-001.jpg

So, the middle AF point (and indeed much of the center column) is double cross type. All points in the center three columns are either cross or double-cross points.

Does that mean that, if I'm using an f/5.6 lens (say 100-400 at max focal length), I would only be able to use points from columns 1, 4, 8 and 11? Or will the higher accuracy points function with less fidelity? Can I not use the center point with my 25-105?

Seems kinda foolish to force focus off center for slower lenses.

OMG....you always get smited for offering your opinion!

Right, so....Ive discovered that I have been smited like hell....in the same way mosquitos sting you if you walk out into the forest at night. ...

I guess the people who smite me are those who feel insulted because I have not recommended their lenses or bodies in my replies to other people's posts. People smite you because they can't stand their lenses being "unrecommended". Most of the time, thats the only lenses they have and they take it too personally....also I've found that some people can't stand it when others says something negative about Canon.

On this site, by giving your opinion = smite :(

so.....since I have 120+ smites and only 30+ thumbs up, I cant careless about my reputation, so people go on smite me! Your lenses can be shizzle. Canon can sometimes be shizzle. And your camera bodies are probably need an upgrade.

5D Mk. III Best Buy Pre-Order

Anyone pre-order their new 5D's through Best Buy?

They have excellent financing and it's something I'm considering. I haven't pre-ordered yet so I know I probably missed the initial shipment. I usually buy big ticket items from them and have had a good experience the past few years.

Also, any chances Best Buy will have some at the store on March 22?

Lens Calibration Help

I have a 7D and I use a 24-70 2.8L and 70-200 2.8L IS II. Both of the lens seem to focus fine when zoomed in, but when zoomed out, they both miss focus. I do not see how micro adjustment would help this. Has anyone had any luck with any calibration services? I have missed too many shots to not do something about this. Thanks in advance for your help.

"Walkaround" prime for FF?

I'm upgrading to the 5dmkIII soon, and I have never used any FF cameras before. I already have the 24-105mm for general walkaround stuff, but I sure do need some prime for more creative shots with shallower DoF and a nice bokeh, not to mention low light situations. Which fixed lens would you recommend for walkaround purposes? I have heard that 50mm lenses fill that niche, but I'm interested in the opinion of CR's community.

Thank you!

Gear upgrade. Is 7D still worth buying?

Hi Everyone,

I am about to upgrade my old 450d, which served me very well for the past few years, but I'm not quite sure what should I buy. What is the best option to upgrade your old rebel?

I was thinking about the 7D, since it seems to be a very good, high end camera and the price is acceptable. But the 7D will have it's 4th birthday very soon, therefore I'm not sure if it's smart to buy it, or maybe just wait a little for it's equivalent to come.

I'm also thinking about buying the 70-200mm f/4.0 L lens.

I enjoy pretty much every kind of photography.
I started out with macro, went further to landscapes, then city life, portraits, people, motion... I try to get to know a bit of everything.

Maybe if I'll tell you what I've got myself so far it will help you in advising me.

Lenses:
Canon:
15mm 2.8f Fish Eye
50mm 1.8f
100mm 2.8f Macro
18-55mm Kit lens
Sigma:
17-35mm 2.8-4f (This one seems to be at the end of it's days though)
Tamron:
28-200mm 3.8-5.6f

Flashes:
Canon Speedlite 550EX

I appreciate any kind of help!

Best regards,
TehPenguin
