Ebay items from Hong Kong?

Has anyone had any experience with ordering items from Hong Kong on Ebay? I'm skeptical as many places are selling "new" items for close to used prices with free shipping. For example, right now I'm looking at a Sekonic light meter and they are selling cheaper than what they go for used locally. Most of these places seem to have at least a 99% rating, but I just can't help but think it would be like ordering from China (potential knock-offs). Has anyone taken the leap of faith?

5DMIII or 5DMII + Lenses, from a 550D?

Hello,

I've owned a 550D since its launch and I am beginning to get very serious about my photography. I'm looking to go from being a hobbyist to at least a part-time paid shooter. My main focus is landscape, portraits, events, and documentary film work. I don't shoot sports very often, but it's one of those things where when I do need good AF, I want it there.

My glass consists of a EF 50 1.4, EF 24-105, and a Tokina 11-16. My budget is 3.5k... the price of a MIII.

My question to you all is would it better to put all of my money towards the MIII, or a MII and a lens like the 70-200 2.8? I plan on selling my 550D+Grip to contribute towards this purchase. I feel like the MIII would be a better investment in the long run, but more glass is always nice.

I know there were a lot of words in there, but I appreciate any advice you can give a fellow photographer! If there is any other info you need about my needs/shooting style, let me know!

Mark III or D800 for Landscape - HDR Shooting

Friends,

I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction.

I shoot landscapes and mostly 5-7 bracketed shooting that is merged via Photomatix (I will never use the in-camera HDR option) Video is nice, every once in a while for the kids, but it is not a feature that really concerns me.

Most of my photography is done around sunrise/sunset. Shooting in lowlight (dusk) is crucial.

I know this is a "Canon" forum, but was just looking for some honest help.

Best,
Zach

Canon 35mm f/2 vs Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 vs Canon f/2.8

I'm looking to purchase a fixed lens for my Canon T1i because I feel that by having a zoom lens, I'm losing that feeling of actually being in the shot.

I also heard if you purchase a new lens, it's better to get a fixed focal length lens rather than a zoom lens.

Anyways, I've been trying to decided between these 3 lens. I'm really liking the Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 even though it is a manual only lens.

Can anyone help me find a good fixed focal length lens that has good IQ and isn't going to burn a hole in my pocket?

(PS. I already have the Canon 50mm f/1.8, but I feel like it's more of a telephoto on a crop sensor)

I can't decide between the 7D and the 5D Mark II

I currently have an EOS 1000D, which is pretty bad, and the better I get at photography, the worse it feels.
So now I'm looking to upgrade.
I have spent about 8 hours today, looking at lenses and bodies, and I have narrowed it down to the 7D VS. the 5D Mark II. The problems is that I can't decide between them.

I do mostly Studio Photography, but I also love to shoot animals, and stuff that move. I have tried the MK II for a short while, with a wide angle, and I was blown away by the FF.
But on the other side, I want accurate and fast auto focus, and 8FPS sounds tempting. I won't be able to afford either of these for about another 4 months, If I'm lucky.

BG-E11 questions

Not sure if this is the first post, but there seems to have been little interest in the grip, but I have a couple of questions, one of which will probably not be answered until it goes on sale.

First one is that it seems from the pics of the alloy shell that the batteries will go in from the side like the 1D series instead of from the back in the BG-E6. If this is the case then the batteries will need a carrier, but I do wonder why a battery grip couldn't have the NP-E3 type battery pack of the 1D series?

The second is the issue that the battery grip has had with compromising the weather sealing, not just on the 5D MkII but others when water entered through the cameras battery compartment. I doubt anyone can answer this unless Canon has mentioned it or they've asked a rep.

I like a battery grip, it makes the camera much easier for me in portrait, especially with an extra set of controls.

T4i Video

I've been thinking...there's a lot of hate from "elite" and "proper" photographers regarding video in SLR bodies. Canon might be in agreement with this haters, considering the marginal video improvements in the 5D3.

I'm wondering if there might be more video improvements to the T4i. That would make the snobs professionals happy and give some of us what we really need.

Thoughts?

New HDR Mode in EOS 5D III

According to Mason Resnick at Adorama (http://www.adorama.com/alc/article/Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-III-First-Look] http://www.adorama.com/alc/article/Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-III-First-Look,) the new Mark III will be able to merge multiple exposures in-camera to create HD images.

This sounds like a nice feature, but what I would rather see is an HDR mode that uses a third of the pixels dedicated to each of the following: lower ISO, nominal ISO, higher ISO. I think the camera has enough pixels to do this. That would dramically increase the camera's dynamic range plus it would make it possible to shoot subjects that move in HDR.

Anybody else more excited about wireless flash over 5DMKIII?

I don't know, the new 5D is nice but there's nothing really remarkable it seems to me. An evolutionary rather than revolutionary change. While the new flash is also an evolutionary change it's a much more welcome one to my mind. I've put off getting third party wireless - expensive, and I dislike the big, ungainly thing that you have to stick onto your hot shoe. Yuck ... build in to the flash with full ETTL support - beautiful. This is a huge change.

I preordered three and the controller when it becomes available for preorder. I already have a 580 and the previous generation (480 I think), pity that the flash doesn't mix optical and RF control, but that's what EBay is for. I this this will give me much more creative control then upgrading to the MKIII or a new lens at this point. Anybody else?

Dilemma - 5DMkII for £1300 or 5DMkIII for £3000 ($2060 vs $4755)

OK, here's my dilemma. I attended Focus on Imaging yesterday in Birmingham (UK). I had the opportunity to handle a 5D MkIII and it did feel good in my hands. The specs are also more advanced than the MkII. However, the asking price is currently £2999 (approximately $4755) whereas there were new 5D MkII bodies on sale for £1300 (approximately $2060) at the Camera World stand.

So, I could have a 5DMkII now (proven and tested technology) for almost half the price of the 5DMkIII at some undefined time in the future (new technology, possible bugs to iron out). Looked at another way, I could have two 5DMkII bodies for more or less the price of one 5DMkIII body.

I had a 1Dx on preorder, which I cancelled because that is almost double again the price of the 5DMkIII and to be honest I started thinking of all the nice glass I could buy with that sort of money.

I'm not a pro sports or wildlife shooter, so a 5DMkIII or even a MkII would probably be more than adequate for my needs, if I'm totally honest with myself.

I'm tempted just to get a 5D MkII for £1300 ($2060) and see how I get on with it for a few months until the 5D MkIII and 1Dx have been out in the field, some real world reviews/comparisons come in and any teething problems are ironed out. Another factor in this decision is that I'd like a FF camera to take with me on holiday to the Far East on 12th April and wonder, even with a preorder, what the likelihood is that I'd even have a 5D MkIII in my hands by 12th April?

What would you do?

Canon celebrates the first 25 years of EOS.

Canon is celebrating 25 years of photography expertise with the anniversary of the launch of its iconic EOS System. Since its introduction in March 1987, the EOS System has grown to become the world’s most comprehensive range of digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras, interchangeable lenses and accessories, favoured by photographers all around the world.

The Canon EOS System was launched in March 1987 with the debut of the EOS 650 SLR camera and three interchangeable, EF mount lenses, including the EF35-70mm f/3.5-4.5. This month, the system will commemorate its long, rich history with the celebration of its 25th anniversary.

EOS stands for ‘Electro Optical System’ and is also the name of the Greek goddess of the dawn. The EOS series was the world’s first fully electronic mount system and heralded a new generation of AF SLR cameras. During the film camera era EOS SLR cameras garnered high acclaim from a wide range of users for their innovative technologies and designs, which focused on Canon’s key concepts of high-speed and ease of use. During this period, Canon pioneered new advances in technology and launched the top-of-the-range EOS-1 professional SLR in 1989. In 1993 Canon continued to expand its user base with the introduction of the compact, lightweight EOS 500 (also known as the EOS Kiss or the EOS Rebel XS in certain parts of the world).

Following the year 2000 introduction of the EOS D30, when the popularisation of DSLR cameras was in full swing, Canon developed advanced technologies, such as its proprietary CMOS sensors and high-performance DIGIC digital image processors, in an effort to offer products that fulfilled the company’s key concepts of high speed, ease-of-use and high image quality.

With the flagship EOS-1D X at the apex, and the newly introduced EOS 5D Mark III boasting excellent image quality and video functionality, Canon’s rich digital SLR camera line-up serves the needs of all levels of users; from professional photographers to entry-level photo enthusiasts.

Canon’s interchangeable EF lens range, introduced alongside the EOS SLR camera system, has come to lead the industry. With Canon’s optical technologies at its core, EF lenses incorporate such innovative technologies as the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), Image Stabilizer (IS), Sub-Wavelength Structure Coating (SWC), anti-reflection technology, and multi-layered Diffractive Optical (DO) elements. The current EF lens line-up comprises over 60 models, making possible a diverse range of imaging-expression possibilities.

Furthermore, with the recent launch of the Cinema EOS System of professional digital cinematography products, Canon’s EOS System now supports motion picture production and other high-end video capture applications.

Canon will continue to refine its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technologies, striving to produce exceptional and reliable cameras and lenses that cater to the varying needs of users while contributing to expanding the culture of photographic and video imaging.

Upgrade from 550d (t2i) to 5d II (autofocus)

Hello,

I currently own a 550D with 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 F4 lenses. With introduction of the new MK3 I was wondering if it might be interesting for me to upgrade to a 5D2 (+ a 16-35 or 17-40 lens in the not-too distant future). My main area is portrait, zoo-photography (esp. flying bird-of-prey shows) and landscapes.

Now I've been scavenging the internet to see how these camera's compare (besides FF, micro-adjustment, higher mpix, iso performance). You mainly see the 5D2 (advised for studio/portrait/low-light 3,9fps) compared to the 7D (with quick AF, advised for sports)

Now my main questions is how the AF of the 550D compares to the AF of the 5D2 - especially in the case of (flying) bird photography ?
I know I'm able to capture that with the 550D (with a pretty high miss-rate, admittedly - but that's not necessarily the camera's fault ^^ ) -

Below an example I shot with the 550D - how would the 5D2 do in this scenario?

Regards

March 22nd Release date in the UK

Just got off the phone with Calumet (UK).

I ordered the 5D3 on the day of announcement and in order to secure it I needed to put £100 down so I went and paid the full amount over the phone. In conversation the release date they have there is March the 22nd, which is a Thursday. Further there may be a possible deliberate association with it being 22mp on the 22nd.

If this is true then that's great, I've two weddings that weekend and can really put it through the mill.

1Dx is still labelled end of April though.
