Friends, help me choose a better one! Thanks

hey! i am an actress and intrested in directing. i was planning on buying the t4i since i’ve been told that it is much better for videos. i am looking to shoot short films. now i talked to a friend today and he said with my budget, it would be better to buy the t3i and invest the left over money into the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Digital SLR Lens, rather then buying the t4i with the standart or 18-135 mm lens. what do you recommend? i dont understand sh** about cameras to be honest, but am really determined on learning. so i do want to do the best investment with my money in order to be able to progress in the directing field and be able to shoot some nice films. thanks in advance! 40mm Pancake Malfunctioning?

Folks;

I got my 40mm pancake earlier in the week, and had been enjoying it on my 5D3.

But tonight, it simply wouldn't focus, and made a most peculiar sound. I switched lenses and everything was fine, so I assumed it wasn't the body. Then I put the 40 back on and it worked. A little time later, after turning the camera off then back on, it didn't work again. I removed it and immediately put it back on, and it was fine (camera off...but cycling power did not reset the problem).

I haven't experienced any problems with any other lenses (24-105L, Sigma 50f1.4, Canon 28f1.8).

Sounds like it needs to go back to Canon...anyone else having this problem? Could it be a user issue?

Thanks!

Help with 1D X viewfinder or focus screen

Hi all. I was taking a few pictures on the 1D X and saw that there are some black dots. I thought it was the eyepiece/viewfinder and cleaned that out, but it was still there. So I took off my lens and looked above the mirror and find some black dots that doesn't seem to want to come off with a brush or air blower. I'm guessing that's the focus screen?

I'm wondering what kind/model the original it is and if I can simply replace that if necessary. Thanks for any assistance. :-[

Bought Nikon stock today, just for laugh-ies

Was feeling a little nutty today, and bought 100 shares of Nikon (NINOF) at $28 a share. Had rolled old 401(k)'s into Fidelity, and was squirrelling away the proceeds into a lot of new investments. The order has not cleared yet, but I assume it will do so Monday.

Was considering buying some Canon, but at present the stock didn't look promising enough even for a lark. Also, Canon does copiers, etc., so it seemed like less of a "pure photo play", which is what I thought was interesting in the first place.

Maybe if this grows, after some years, Nikon can buy me a nice Canon to play with in my retirement.

Feel free to check in from time to time and flame me royally if I lose my a*s on it! Will teach me to stick to mutual funds where qualified professionals make the investments.

Canon EOS 1D X arriving at K&S

Per request I was asked to post when the camera arrived: The Canon EOS 1D X on which I put a deposit with Keeble & Shuchat Photography (http://bit.ly/Mwykvo) back in 2012 March 17 with the help of Garry Cohane (http://bit.ly/Mq1xK7) arrived, along with extra batteries and a 2nd charger on 2012 Jul 19. The GP-E1 GPS unit is still on back order.

I hope someone finds this helpful.

disruptive technology and the 5D3

Those following the Canon sensor technology, esp. the market disruption caused by the D800, will find this comment from the-digital-picture.com rather interesting:

Canon didn’t release any disruptive technology in this case.
..... (of the 5D3)

which raises the question: to stay competitive, does Canon need to turn heads and release disruptive sensor technology - something that drops jaws? the t4i sensor isn't disruptive and neither is the 5D3

Even the 1DX sensor does not strike me as disruptive, from the comments and reviews anyway. the camera appears to be a highly optimized implementation of incremental changes to a mature technology, very well executed, the best Canon has ever offered and capable of outstanding performance, to be sure, but not disruptive in the case of the sensor itself. is the 1DX sensor disruptive? 1DX owners please tell us.

the problem for Canon (well for anyone looking to Canon for "disruptive" sensor technology") is that having just asserted the flagship $6K body would they then, early in the 1DX life, introduce a FF body containing a disruptively better sensor with better DR and/or RAW noise performance ? Time will tell if Canon takes any cues from Nikon in that regard.

One approach would be to introduce a disruptive capability set in a crop sensor. Its hard for me to imagine an entry level FF or even a 5D4, eclipsing the 1DX in IQ -- even if it had inferior feature set. Perhaps, however Canon could introduce a disruptively better crop sensor. With the IQ potential masked by the high pixel density, I wonder if the next generation of higher-end crop bodies might begin to approach 5D2 IQ levels, perhaps.

So everybody's here excited about news on new mirrorless toy from Canon. Having read almost all posts, I haven't found any topic about the price. So let's speculate - what will be the initial price of the EOS M body? I think it would be set between 599$ and 799$.

Edit: Price anticipation in US in US$, or in UK in pounds, or in mostly Europe in Euro :) You know what I mean...

Canon 1DX in stock, 7/20/12

Hey everyone, I wasn't one of those folks who pre-ordered the 1DX and decided just to wait it out and see if there are any bugs or anything before I committed myself to the 1DX. Being an early adopter can be a pain sometimes. After hearing lots of positive feedback and info on only a few minor bugs I decided it was time to buy. But everyone has been pre-ordering this camera since March so how the heck was I supposed to get one in the next couple of months?

As it turns out, a friend of mine sent me a message to let me know that Murphy's Camera in Lexington, KY had filled all of their pre-orders and have 4 in stock! Well, they had 4 but I bought one but there are still 3 left!

You can contact Don Barker at 859-255-1013 to see if you can snag one of these amazing cameras. I opted to drive 2 hours to pick mine up so I could have it for a wedding this weekend but of course they will ship it to you.

I'll be working on my review and maybe even post a few tonight.

Keep 70-200 f4 IS or go for f2.8 IS II?

Having recently moved from a 40D to a 5D3 I'm possibly in the position where I can sell my current 70-200 f4 IS to a colleague and get a f2.8 IS mk2.

Whilst I've read about all I can about the f2.8, I still need some convincing:

1. The f4 is fantastic. It's sharp and light enough that I can carry it around all afternoon in my hand without any bother.
2. The f2.8 is faster and the IS is no doubt better BUT it is almost twice the weight of the f4.

As I have arms like wet noodles the weight is a slight issue for all-day shooting but not necessarily a deal breaker (I've got the 300mm f2.8 IS too but I don't handhold it all afternoon).

So the real question is: is the f2.8 IQ significantly better than the f4? (The fact it should focus quicker and track better with the 5D3 is also a given).

What should I do?

Thanks for any opinions.

GoPro HD Hero 2 for Dogs...Help!

Hi everyone! I'm a big reader, but rare poster, so apologies in advance if this is in the wrong part of the forums. I'm a Canon shooter, own a 5DMkII, 7D, and lots of lenses, which which I have captured some amazing shots of my beautiful German Shepherd and her puppies (she was pregnant when we rescued her). I've increasingly come to want to get a GoPro HD Hero 2, and experiment with getting shots from her POV in the park. I've seen videos online of some other dog owners who've done that, and think it's a really cool idea!

That being said, does anyone from this site have firsthand experience using the HD Hero 2 with animals? Any tips or suggestions? I'm thinking the 'Outdoor Edition' would make more sense to buy than the Motorsports or Surf Edition for my intended purposes...is that correct? Being that I don't own a car (NYC!) or surfboard, I probably wouldn't need those mounts. Would you recommend an accessory like the GoPro chest harness? The guy whose videos I've already seen on Vimeo used strong tape to hold the camera to his dog's harness, he didn't use the GoPro harness...but just cause he's the only one who posted a video, doesn't mean he's the only one who experimented, so I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I know the earlier GoPro models are fine for my intended use, but I'm pretty set on the HD Hero 2. Does anyone know if and when GoPro would release a successor? I don't want to get the HD Hero 2 only to hear the HD Hero 3 came out the next day :-)

From Austria

Just back from a short trip to Austria and took both of my cameras with me. When I need speed, the 645D just isn't built for that so bird shots will nearly always be done with the Canon. I do find that the Pentax has much better dynamic range than the Canon, although the Canon's inbuilt HDR is good and even better as it retains the RAW files. Here are some more shots including some of the Maltatal Dam, which is Austria's highest at about 700ft high.

Which to keep? EF 70-300 IS USM or 70-200 4L IS USM

I may have to downsize some of my zoom lenses and the two that I may have to choose between are the EF 70-300 IS USM lens and the EF 70-200 f4L IS USM lens.

Now of course, the "L" is a better lens in every way, but I like having the little bit of extra reach of the 300mm. What do you guys think? If you could only keep one, which one would it be?

Lovin' my 5d Mark III

I have had my mark III for about two weeks now and have been shooting a lot of hummingbird and macro shots. My previous camera was a 40d which I thought took excellent pictures.... that is until now! While I still think it takes great pictures, the 5d is just amazing. I was really worried about losing the crop factor for some pics, especially the birds. However, the Mark III more than makes up for this with it's low light capability and the substantial bump in resolution. I have been amazed at how much I can crop some of my full frame pics and they remain excellent. I am getting shots now that I never dreamed of with the 40d, and the 61 point autofocus, don't even get me started on how much I already love that! Anyone with a crop body that has concerns about upgrading and losing the crop factor, don't worry about it if you upgrade to the Mark III. I can't pick up my 40d anymore, it just can't compare. I was going to keep it so I would have two bodies, but I'm starting to think that it may go and I may buy another full frame, possibly a Mark II. :) :) :) :) :) :)

Soon…

We should see the new Canon mirrorless next Monday, details are still being confirmed about specifications and all that.

Don’t expect anything too “retro” or “rangefinder-esque”, as this is going to be a mass market consumer electronics type of camera. It’ll be more Nikon 1 than Fuji X-Pro 1.

I will post more when I can, a lot of what’s going around is pretty contradictory. Canon seems to have done a good job plugging leaks. :)
