1DX tweak and fix list

Outside of the black af points:

Here's my first one:
---
For custom button configuration [af-on] option to register/recall shooting function I would like to add a one-shot/ai-servo option.

This way I can bind my custom ai servo setting when the button is pressed then switch to one shot - single point or spot when my thumb is off:

[af-on] pressed:
Ai Servo
8-12fps
Manual
1/1000
f8
auto iso
servo untouched
61 points on
af on
af-linked spot metering/eval

[af-on] depressed
one-shot
3-8fps
AV
f/4
auto iso
servo untouched
single point af/with front toggle switch to spot af
eval metering

Unless I have set it up incorrectly I can’t work out how to do this with a single button – I have 90% of this config setup except to change from one-shot to ai-servo I need to use one of the front hotkeys to switch. Makes sense to me to be able to just do it in one button as it saves the finger gymnastics :)

(if anyone has worked out how to do this would love to hear it!)

Question...To UV or not to UV...that IS the question!

I have always used UV filters on all of my lenses. For me, it is cheap insurance against accidental damage to the lens glass. However, this past weekend shooting with a friend is making me reconsider this...

I met a gentleman who was told to me had been shooting for decades. He had some pretty impressive equipment (Canon) with him to boot! He looked at my gear and asked if I always shot with UV filters and I said yes. He then said, "Why? Why would you spend $$$ on a top quality lens and then shoot through a UV filter that can distort the image?" Needless to say, I had nothing to say. He then said that keeping the damage off of your outer lens glass was the hood's job and to not worry about it.

I looked at my friend and he said he agreeded with him and that he never used filters. He told me that you truly can get a better quality image without using UV filters...

Guys? Opinions?

Lens to take to Kruger National Park South Africa

I may have the opportunity to visit Kruger this August and will take my 5d mkiii and 50d. With the camera's i'll take a 300mm 2.8L 70-200 2.8 mkii L and 24-105L with 1.4 and 2x extenders. Does anyone have any advice on what other lens I should pack/rent/buy.
I have never been on Safari so all advice will be helpful on lens or any other equipment needed.

Thanks

Patent and New Lens

It's always so exciting to hear about new lenses and bodies. Many of use here are always wondering when new lenses and bodies are coming and its always so difficult to figure it out. Especially when you are getting ready to get new gear or upgrade your gear. At CR they post new patents very often and I get so excited to see what's coming next! There are usually at lot of detail about new goods but first thing they post is Patent release date and filing date. For example new 24-70L II's patent was filed on April 2009 and Published on October 2010. Is that mean it takes more or less 3 years to get a product to consumers or its up to Canon? It would be so nice if there are pattern that we can guess when we one is coming. Please let me know about what you think! Thanks

1DX available from Boolchand's (2 units)

For those that may be interested or are sitting too far in the pre-order queue, Ravi at Boolchand store is telling me they are receiving two unit of the 1DX next week or so and they are not sold yet. They are in the US and offer free shipping with no tax since they are actually in the US Virgin Island! They are a Canon dealer.

You can contact them at [email protected] or [email protected]. Their phone number is 340-776-0794. In case this could help some of our fellow Canon user over here :-). I had contacted Ravi myself for a 1DX to get it before B&H but since I already got mine in Canada from a local store they still have some...

Hope this helps...good luck...

Wide Canon L choice: 14L II 2.8 or 16-35 II 2.8

Hello people,

Been lurking around this site watching various posts from time to time. I got a new 5d mark iii and my current lens set-up consists in a 24-105 (kit lens from my mk ii), 50L, 100-400L. I'm thinking of buying a wider lens than what can offer the 24-105 at the widest setting.

So which one would you recommend if any? Or stick to the 24?

PS: I'm amateur (ie i don't make money out of this).

Cheers

Help Choosing My Next Lens? :)

Just for a bit of fun, I thought I'd ask around to see what people would recommend as my next lens. You can see the lenses I currently own below :) I was going to get the 85mm ƒ/1.2L USM II, however I have been thinking lately that the 50mm might have me covered for a while, and I should get something drastically different to add more variety in my line-up.

Should I get a macro? Or Maybe a tilt-shift (If so, what focal length? I've read that the longer a tilt shift lens the more exaggerated the effect, however only the 17 and 24mm's are L series), Wait for the new 24-70? Or get something a bit longer 135 or 300mm prime?

Any suggestions are welcome! Budget is around $2,500 :) Go nuts! And thank you in advance!

Also worth noting that 300mm was one of my favourite lengths on film, and I'd love to have that focal length, however I don't think I'll be able to afford the ƒ/2.8 version, is the ƒ/4L still a good lens? Or is it aging now? How does it compare to the new 70-300? (despite the obvious lack of a stop)

7D vs 5D3 vs 5D2 well-lit, bright subject reach test (ISO100 and ISO6400)

Here is a comparison of ISO6400 reach for a bright, well-lit, high contrast subject (the reach advantage for 7D will be less if the subject has dark tones or is in a darker part of the image or you underexpose in general, while it's still very clear, surprisingly, for a bright subject well lit it might be barely there for a black crow in a dark corner of an image most likely; I may do mid-tonality reach comparison later since many subjects might fit that scenario):

top image is the 7D re-scaled to match the bill size on the 5D2 - you notice that it delivers BOTH less noise, less artifacts and more detail than the 5D2 and slightly more detail and less artifacts than the 5D3 with maybe a touch more noise

second image from top is the 5D2 - you notice it retains a bit less detail than the 5D3 bill

third from top is the 5D3 bill - you notice that it and the 5D2 show a less detail than the 7D bill even at ISO6400, the 5D2 shows tons less

bottom is the native size 7D bill - bright subject, well-lit the 7D still has a sizeable reach advantage over the 5 series cams, especially compared to the 5D2

but again for a subject that is not so super contrasty and is made up of many tones much farther from white the reach advantage may prove to be much less

make sure to click the image to see it at full scale

If you use firefox make sure to click all of these images to make sure you are seeing the full 100% view
and note that the 5D3 looks brightest and the 7D darkest so at ISO6400 the bodies are probably not applying the same gain so the effective ISO compared here is highest for 5D3 and lowest for 7D most likely which would give 5D3 a slight disadvantage and the 7D a slight advantage.

Post your landscapes where animals play a major role...

I'll start with a couple I am currently working on from a vacation a few weeks ago. I only had a couple brief minutes to capture these shots as I was with my GF and her parents and we just happened to drive through this park as the sun was setting on two consecutive evenings. They all waited in the car will I snapped a few frames. Comments, questions and critiques are welcome in this thread. Lets see yours.

How to light for Fast Action at night...

I am doing some shoots tonight with some friends, we are going to capture the moment that a Tarpon eats our bait, and then shoots out of the water. Here is an example of what I am talking about:

http://www.insideflorida.com/images/cities/tarpon_big_jump.jpg

Main difference, will be that ours is at night. This behavior is very common with these type of fish, especially when they get hooked. So my question is what lighting would be recommended to get a decent exposure. In most cases the fish are 20-30 feet away, so my 2 600EX's are not very handy here, possibly a spotlight? I have 1 assistant on the boat that can give me help with this lighting. The camera + lens being used is the 5D Mark III and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. I got a few hours to run to a local dive shop (spotlight?) or to my local photog shop if anyone has any suggestions.

Thanks so much for any and every bit of help!

So, which memory cards for video?

I use a 60D right now with Transcend 32 GB SD cards and have never had any complaints. I am looking to get myself a 5DM3 soon and would like to know what memory cards people are using or suggest for shooting video mainly as well as photos. Should I go with SD or CF?

I currently have 4 of these in my Amazon cart http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002P370AI/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&smid=A23M3KL3V61UGY

But it would be ideal if I could use SD cards and swap between the 60d or 5D if ever in a pinch. The bottom line is wanting to know what is the best bet with 5DM3. Thanks!

American football in Poland

So on Sunday I was at the game - final match of the Polish National American Football League.
This was my first american football game I watched live, as this sport is not so popular in Poland. What do you think about those photos and video?
Shot with 5d2 and 7d, different lenses.

What did I do wrong?

I was taking shots of some friends and seem to mess up a few like this. The focus on the guy is completely missed.

I was using 5D3 - 50mm 1.4
Av - 1.4
AF Point Expansion with Center point selected.

I took about 4-5 shots and they were all same with the focus missed on the guy. Is it because my DOF was to shallow? Or Do I need to use a different AF selection mode?

Please advise.
