two new lenses vs 5D3 Kit

I have been struggling for a few months with my purchase decisions on new lens and body.
I currently own 30D and 50mm 1.4 prime, and wanted to get additional lens and new body.
With the 5D3 full spec and pricing tag, I am considering the following two options:

  • Get 5D3 with 24-105 kit
  • Wait on body and get 24mm 1.4 & 70-200 2.8 II

I have immediate need to take indoor low light group picture as well as indoor telescope pictures, and my 50mm prime is either too limiting or too short.
One additional question: if I go with the second option, will I be able to take advantage of the two L lenses on my 30D camera? (beside the crop factor I am aware of?)

Thank you in advance for your advise.

5D Mark III -- Compact Flash (CF) or Secure Digital (SD / SDHC)?

I'm looking for opinions / experiences / knowledge / etc. on the differences between using CF and SD. I've got experience with both--CF in my EOS 30D and SD in my wife's point-n-shoot.

I'm stepping up from the 30D to my recently pre-ordered 5D3. I've got a small collection of compact flash cards that I'm planning to replace both for speed and capacity reasons. My question is... With the addition of a dual CF / SD card slot in the 5D3, is there an advantage of using one card format over the other? As near as I can tell, the available speeds, capacities, and prices are relatively similar.

Is there something I'm missing? What are the prevailing opinions out there?

16-35mm II 2.8

I bought a 16-35mm II USM for my 5DMII and everything is perfect except for sometimes when i focus the metere goes a little wonky after the makes the "focused" noise. it usually happens when there is alot of light in the picture. Is it just all the light messing with the focus? or do i have a faulty lens?

it doesnt happen very often..which is why im thinking its because of the light. im just a little worried.

About the 1Dx?

The new 5DIII looks like a great camera and will perform as expected I'm sure but... What about some 1Dx precision?

Does Canon has a firm release date for the 1Dx? Also, they said that the camera was announced in advance to be able to gather some feedback from people and maybe make some correction before the release. Any news on what could change between the announcement date and the release?

Things like comparing images on the screen is a nice feature of the 5D I would like to get with the 1Dx... That is, when it finally comes out...

I was hoping Canon would take to opportunity of the 5DIII launch to talk about the 1Dx and maybe have some new sample / info out... Nothing yet :\

No Focusing Screens for 5D MIII?

From the specs it appears that the new 5D essentially shares the same viewfinder as the 7D and that interchangeable focusing screens will no longer be available (they also don't show up on the Canon site as they do with the 1D X).

This is likely a deal breaker for me as manual focusing through the viewfinder with the standard focusing screen, and the 7D focusing screen, is practically impossible to do accurately with fast aperture lenses. Specifically, Zeiss lenses will be much more difficult to use. Anyone who claims otherwise isn't as critical of focus as I am, because when a viewfinder can show a DOF no wider than f5.6, getting critical focus at f1.2 requires trial and error at best.

Yes, you can still use LiveView, but that is only practical when shooting from a tripod (landscapes, for example). It's too awkward to use LiveView in normal shooting conditions (for me anyway).

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I find this to be a bummer.

5d3 Batteries

Hi guys,

I just went shopping for some of the lp-e6 batteries used in the 5d models, and I'm wondering if people have had good experiences with the off branded batteries. Canon batteries are abut 50-60 dollars and off brand are about 10-15 dollars.

Thanks!

Anyone for a cheap FF 9D ?

With the price of the 5DMk3 going up so much, currently at about 80% more than the Mk2, the rumour mill is suggesting that both will remain on sale, indeed, both are still shown on the Canon UK site, could this be a testing of the market for a value FF model, a 9D perhaps, sharing either the 18 or 22mpx sensor to finally replace the Mk2 towards the end of the year ? Priced at 7D levels, basic AF and functions.

I want to see some 1080 @ High ISO (low light) Videos from the 5DmIII.....

Been searching and found nothing but 720(or smaller) videos which look to be around 200-400 ISO
That is no comparison whatsoever to a 5DmII.

720 is garbage and used for low quality work.

I want to see a downloadable demo in 1080 at ISO 2000+ to see if it's really that much better at video than a mII.
I am pretty skeptical at this point...especially since there is no 1080 @ 60FPS.

Not that the camera should only be based on the Video, but I would really like to see comparable data to see if it is *really* any better in that department.

If it was priced at $3000(US), I would order 2 right now, but I just can't swallow $3500(US) unless there was a MASSIVE, significant difference in the video quality over the mII or even the more reasonable, $500(US) difference, in the Nikon D800.

The D800 has some pretty decent low light, high ISO, video performance!

It is a selling point that is valid to me as the user and might not reflect others views.

Just hoping someone can point me in the right direction for finding some good 1080 video examples!

Is 5dmkiii a good investment in the long run?

I've been positively stunned by the great high-ISO performance of the new 5d after reading the review by Jeff Ascough - http://blog.jeffascough.com/photographers/2012/03/canon-eos-5d-mark-iii-review.html

The price seems a bit high, that's true, but I just want your opinion - I'm switching to FF from 550D, I currently have 24-105mm f/4, and 50mm f/1.4 by... some other brand :) For 3500 I could either get 5dmkIII or mkII + 70-200mm f/4.
But the main problem is that f/4 is a little bit slow when paired with mkII, and its high ISO performance is disappointing, so I won't be able to use these lenses (70-200 f/4 and 24-105) in low-light conditions.

So the question is, isn't it better to grab the much more costly mkIII while saving quite a good amount of money on lenses? I know ISO does not equal aperture, but I mostly do photojournalism so I don't care much about bokeh and DoF. Any opinions are appreciated, thank you.

5DIII..AF Assist beam..AF Illuminator

Hi,

I am new to Camera world.
Can anyone make me understand What is AF Assist beam ?
Is it the same people are complaining about a AF Illuminator.
Below is from 5DIII specifications page.

AF Assist Beam
(1) Enable

With an EOS-dedicated Speedlite, AF-assist beam is emitted automatically when necessary.

(2) Disable

(3) IR AF assist beam only

* No AF-assist beam with flash bursts.

LULZ Nikon Used Canon 5D Mark II DSLR Footage to Launch D800!

http://www.steves-digicams.com/news/whoops_nikon_uses_canon_dslr_footage_to_launch_d800.html

Whoops.

Seems Nikon is not only using Canon EOS-5D Mark II-captured video from TSO's film 'The Mountain' to sell their new camera, but they never asked his permission and are, therefore and perhaps more disgracefully, violating his copyright.

EOS Cinema Still On The Way?

I'm a bit confused. I've read reports of EOS Cinema cameras in development, but the stories are a bit old. Of course, the C300 is out, but was that the camera the old reports turned out to be?

Or are there still more affordable, DSLR style EOC Cinema cameras on the way some time in 2012?

If so, it would be a dream come true. The 5D Mark III looks great, but something more affordable in the cinema line would be amazing.

Anyone happen to know?

How is the 1Dx better than 5Dmk iii? Can someone please enlighten me....

Having seen the now confirmed spec of both new cameras, I just cannot for my life see how is it justifiable to pay Canon almost twice as much for the 1Dx, as much as I want to.

OK, I know that the 1Dx has:

Higher iso at 51,200 (but it is the image quality that count, and is 1dx better at iso 25,600 than the 5D iii?)

2 Digic 5+ processor (but how does it affect the photos it output?)

Faster FPS? (Simply not relevant to me personally, I don't do sport photos)

All in all, disappointed at both camera upgrades...

Videographers happy with 5D Mark III?

Hey everyone, i'm interested in a DSLR for shooting video. I've been waiting for the 5D announcement to decide which camera to get. I have no experience with these, and i'm just wondering if it looks like it will have all the improvements that videographers were hoping for in the Mark III.

Do you think it's the best camera to get in that price range to shoot video?

I've thought about the Canon XF300 with 50mbps bit rate, and 4:2:2 color. Three 1/3" images sensors (small!)

I wonder if it'd be better off making a 5D Mark III rig?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Flash triggering of older flashes

Forgive me if I missed this somewhere in the storm of information this morning, but does anyone know:

Can the new 5D3 can trigger older flashes (430EX, EXII, 580EX, EXII)? ... using the old protocol (non radio). I believe the 7D can do this, right?

I really don't need another flashgun, just for the radio thing, and the 430EX that I have can only work on camera, or as a slave (not master), so this would be really handy...

My wife's D80 has all this built in, and its years old. I'm getting a bit fed up with Canon short changing us on things like this...

Canon 50/1.4 focusing

Hi,

I have read several article about focusing issue about above lens. I also tried with 500d in the shop and it was terrible about 50cm range. From 5shot 2 was good. I can't make more photos unfotunatly.
Has anybody experience with this lens? With 7D?

The Sigma one could be better in focusing issue? I have read the Sigma has better image queality.. but the manufacturing quality has big deviation..
