A new 50mm lens on the horizon?

Over the last few days I have received a lot of hints that a new EF 50mm lens is coming down the pipeline. There are even reports of people shooting with the new lens and that it may have appeared on an updated Canon price list (I would love to see the price list). The retail price is said to be $849 on an “EF 50 f/1.4 II”.

We recently reported that an IS version of the focal length exists in prototype form. It’s pretty normal to have multiple versions of a lens.

There’s always a risk with price lists and typos, and we have seen a lens appear on a price list before it was announced. The announcement came 6 months later, so this may not be an imminent thing. The good news is that there is a lot of chatter about the focal length going around.

High dynamic Range Imaging
(HDRI or just HDR) is a set of methods used in
imaging and photography, to allow a
greater dynamic range between the lightest and
darkest areas of an image than current standard
digital imaging methods or photographic methods.
This wide dynamic range allows HDR images to
represent more accurately the range of intensity
levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct
sunlight to faint starlight, and is often captured by
way of a plurality of differently exposed pictures
of the same subject matter.

In simpler terms, HDR is a range of methods to
provide higher dynamic range from the imaging
process.

How it works:
Non-HDR cameras take pictures at one exposure
level with a limited contrast range. This results in
the loss of detail in bright or dark areas of a picture,
depending on whether the camera had a low or high
exposure setting.
HDR compensates for this loss of
detail by taking multiple pictures at different exposure
levels .....

TractionEngine3OriginalSmal.jpg

...and intelligently stitching them
together to produce a picture that
is representative in both dark and
bright areas.

HDR is also commonly used to refer
to display of images derived from
HDR imaging in a way that
exaggerates contrast for
artistic effect.

girl-hdr.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v660/firaq/girl-hdr.jpg

The two main sources of HDR images are
computer renderings and merging of multiple
low-dynamic-range (LDR) or
standard-dynamic-range (SDR)
photographs.

Tone mapping methods, which reduce overall
contrast to facilitate display of HDR images on
devices with lower dynamic range, can be applied
to produce images with preserved or exaggerated
local contrast for artistic effect.

Thanks to Canon Rumors for creating a HDR
section for the HDR enthusiasts.

Remember, it's supposed to be over exposed,
washed out, bleeding color, blurry, etc. etc.

Anyone can be
a critic, only a
few dare to be
the artists.

New Lends

I have been having a hard time deciding what lends to get for a quite a white. I currently have 5Dc 16-35L 24-70L and 70-200 F4 IS L. I have never owned any prime lenses and I am very interested in 35L 50L 135L. My budget is about $2000 so I can buy any of those lenses but I have thought about upgrading my body as well. Although my 5D is in great condition and I really enjoy shooting full frame. I understand that 35L, 50L and 135L are different lenses and often used in different occasions. I shoot a lot of city landscapes and darker indoor environment. All the research I have done I have never hear bad things about 135L. I understand this lens is ideal for portrait but I am not a professional and I do not shoot portrait often. For 50L i hear good and bad things about this lens. I am very interested in 35L and I hear also mix thing about this lens as well. Also I understand this lends is very old and I guess replacement is coming soon? I know that technology is always keep progressing but I was not sure if I should wait for new one for this lens. I really could use people's opinion and I also love to hear if you use any of those lenses please let me know what do you like to shoot the best for using those lenses. I know this is such an amateur question but I really appreciate your help. Thank you very much!

20mm f/2.8 vs. 28mm f/1.8

I'm having a hard time deciding between these two wide angle primes. I have a 7d and i'm going to acquire a 5d mark ii soon. I feel as if we can debate wider/slower versus tighter/faster. They're also about the same price. But my question is regarding optical quality. Would anyone know if one of these lenses is significantly better in terms of sharpness, CA, and the sort? If it's a tie, I think i'll pick the 20mm f/2.8

50mm f/1.8 vs. 50mm f/1.4

I currently have a 50mm f/1.8 and I'm really struggling with the AF. It's awful. I don't know if mine is screwed up after a week of shooting in the desert or if it's just screwy but i end up manually focusing at f/1.8 frequently which is a bit of an adventure especially with the microscopic focus ring on the 1.8. My question is the boost in AF performance worth the 200 or so bucks in the upgrade to the 1.4 USM? I'm a college student so the 1.2L is out of the question in terms of cost.

Looking for 18-135mm STM first impressions

I am fairly new to this hobby, just got a T4i with the 40mm pancake after I cancelled my amazon order because I couldn't wait any longer for the 18-135 STM to ship. I know some of you have ordered the lens separately from Canon and some are now showing up at best buy. I am curious to what your first impressions are with the lens, as the pancake has gotten so many good reviews (from what I have found). Just curious as to what you think about it so far...

If Canon wants to kill off Nikon/Sony/Pentax drop APS-C and Go APS-H

The next 7D with an aps-h sensor like the 1dm4 would kill! I'd buy it. Sensor size has always been one of the largest points of any camera. Bigger sensored cameras have more photo-site space and with gapless lens technology on the 1DX and 5DM3 its a big win over the Nikons non-D series sports cameras. Its also a win over Sony and others that are 1.5 or 1.6 crop. This would separate the 7d from the two digit series cameras like the 60d. It would kind of take the old helm of the sports camera but in the middle spot the 1dm2/3/4 held.

1DX vs D4 sample

Finally received my 1DX today and after the battery was charged, my mom was nice enought to serve as my model today since my dauthers and wife are out for the week. I did those very quickly for my own use and tried to keep lighting fairly the same but you will see some variation of course. Please keep in mind those are actually the first shot coming out of my 1DX. Very impressive so far I must say.

The sample shown are 100% crop and were shot with a 50mm lens in all cases. The ISO dont all match because we did those very quickly and quite frankly, I am no pro. When I have more time I will do properly. The D4 has become my day to day camera for the past three months. Felt good to shoot with my Canon glass again :D!

I will delay judgment for later once I actually know how to use the 1DX and feel as comfortable with it as with my D4. For now I can say they are both amazing cameras well beyond my own capabilities :P. Two things that are stricking however is how much colors and metering are different between both cameras...

Samples shown next ...

Brand New 5D2 banding - return?

I received my new 5D2 from B&H last week, which I bought specifically for low light use. However, I've noticed a strange banding pattern emanating from blown highlights against a plain background (examples attached, ISO 6400). It doesn't look like regular banding or sensor bloom, so I'm not exactly sure what to call it. Dark horizontal streaking, as it only occurs horizontally? I've never experienced this phenomena on my 7D (or any other camera I've owned), even at ISO 12800. Is this phenomena normal or should I send my camera back? Thanks for the advice!

Canon 1DX - AFMA reset when I turn off the camera (workaround found)

Hi !
Sorry, my english isn't very good ;)
I have a problem with Af MA on my 1DX.
I respects the manual procedure for the MA settings but if I turn off the camera and turn on, the settings are cleared, reset to 0...
For exemple, with the EF 16-35 f2.8L II, in the first setting, the LCD screen displays [00] EF 16-35, I adjust W and T, I "wrote" the serial number (because the camera doesn't recognize the serial number) and it's OK.
I turn off the camera and turn on (lens always mounted on the camera)
And, in the first setting Af MA menu, the W and T values are 0 !
If I go in the sub menu with the INFO touch, my camera displays [01] EF 16-35...

The problem is identical with my EF 24-105 f4 L, EF 50, EF 70-200 f2.8 II and EF 40 f2.8 STM.
I specified my lens are not old. Purchased this year.
The CR2025 battery seems to work because hour/minutes/day are OK.

I have also a 5D Mark III and the Af MA works perfectly.
I have 2 friends who have a 1Dx et they don'have problem with Af MA.

I wrote to CPS today, this morning. I'm waiting a response.

Do you have same problems on your 1Dx ?
Thanks a lot for your help.

2023: a look into Canon's flagship body

I am interested in hearing your ideas regarding the top of the line Canon body a decade from now. We have all been enjoying incremental changes since the flip from film to sensor and I am just wondering if there will be another leap forward in the next decade or not.

Just what will the capabilities be in a decade?

What would we like to see?

How about internet connectivity and it's unlimited storage capacity or ability to communicate?

Or maybe a thought controlled head mounted camera that becomes our eyes and allows us to view the world in a ultra wide angle or telephoto sort of way and capture images just because we though that would look nice. Or it's ability to capture everything we see and store on the net forever!

What role will an artificial neural network play in the future of photography? Will the camera learn your habits and make decisions for you while at the same time communicating with other cameras world wide and sharing these "new" methods collectively increasing the ability for all photographers?

Can you image having the knowledge of every great photographer as a literal extension of your own mind and being able to use that without any effort?

What are your thoughts?

Should/can Canon keep making its own sensors?

I see Nikon using Sony sensors, and Sony itself is using its new sensors in its new well-received bodies, and I read people discussing how the Canon sensors seem to be falling behind.

I wonder if Canon will reach a kind of "Apple Moment", like when Apple quit spending its R&D money trying to beat Intel on a component (CPU's) and started just using Intel chips like everyone else. They freed up the resources and focus to start beating the competition by doing what they did best, which was making superior products, innovating and making customers happier with them than with the competition. And now Apple went from almost disappearing to being bigger than ExxonMobil?

Canon makes better lenses than Nikon, and could focus on staying ahead on that. They could/should take a page from the perfectionist Steve Jobs, and focus on addressing all the 1000 little niggling customer gripes and wishes about cameras, and making Canons just work better and smoother than Nikon (or Sony). Outclass the competition by thinking of everything, and including it; and by not withholding simple little crap in hardware and firmware that they could instead make standard in all their cameras for very little cost. Little stuff like firmware improvements (auto ISO), or simple features like AFMA, or including more external controls, or simpler cleaner menus.

I think I am right on the little user-experience enhancements as a powerful & underutilized competitive opportunity. I may be foolishly throwing the baby out with the bathwater here on the sensor question; I don't know. I do wonder if the current "sensor gap" will or can continue. If things are no better, or worse, in a year or two maybe that is something they should think about?

1DX - Ethernet, USB 3.0 or 2.0 for transfer?

My 1DX has shipped and I'll have it by mid-week, along with a Lexar 1000X 32GB UDMA 7 CF card. I have not yet ordered the Lexar USB 3.0 card reader because: a) I'm expecting to be able to use the Ethernet port to move photos to my Windows 7 Home Premium equipped PC; b) using a USB 3.0 reader would require me to add a USB 3.0 card to my computer (yes, it's a few years old, and not a big deal but an extra step); and c) I still have a perfectly good USB 2.0 Firewire equipped card reader that I've been using with my SanDisk 32 GB (90 MB/sec) card.

So, for those lucky few (specifically thinking of Neuro, et. al.) who have received their cameras and been playing with them for the last week or so, can you weigh in on whether you have been able to make use of the Ethernet transfer capabilities and any hiccups associated therewith? Seems to require the use of the Canon Eos Utility software, rather than direct import into Lightroom, as I've done in the past. Haven't used the Eos Utility, so I'm wondering how that affects the workflow.

Looking forward to hearing about your experiences and recommendations!

40mm Pancake Killed the 50mm??

Hi,

I've had my 40mm f2.8 STM Pancake for a few weeks now. It's barely left my camera. I love it.

I'm seriously wondering if I'll ever use my 50mm f1.4 again - ?

OK, the 50mm is faster but I reckon the IQ from the 40mm is better. Plus, there's something about the 40mm that just 'works' for me.

Basically I wondering what other 40mm users think?

(I'm also thinking about selling my 50mm to fund the 135mm L, so I need a bit of convincing please!).

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Need a new flashgun

My Jessops 360AFDC Flashgun had decided to die on me just when I want to start teaching myself about flash as I know little when it comes to flash photography. Can anyone recommend a decent flashgun I could buy, I currently have a Canon EOS 450D but in the near future I would like to upgrade to FF like the 5D Mark II. One I have looked at is the Canon Speedlite 430EX II, this seems to be a popular flash, also the Canon Speedlite 580EX II, but because of the cost I would have to look at getting that one used.

Thank you very much!

Kingston Wi-Drive

I was wondering if any one has used a Kingston Wi-Drive. I have not grabbed the manuel but I seem to remember that there was a way to write to a external drive through the USB on the EOS D bodies. Was thinking that if that is so I could kill 2 birds with one stone. Be writing to the usb drive I would have 2 copies of the pics and be able to view them as the where being taken on my iPad or laptop thus not needing any of the wireless extras for the camera. PLUS I get to expand the storage on my iPad.

Thoughts anyone???

Colour Management settings for the MG8150 Printer.

If anyone could give me some advice for this problem I'd be grateful.

I've recently bought the MG8150 printer but I'm just having a bit of a problem getting it set up correctly.
Basically everything is fine except the prints look "flat or dull" in comparison to the image on my computer screen.
I've installed the ICC profile for the paper (Ilford Galerie Prestige Smooth Gloss) I'm using, and I believe everything's set correctly in Photoshop, but I suspect this is where the problem lie's.

There seems to be so many places where the colour management settings have to be input.
i.e in the printer settings and the Photoshop settings.

So, a list of all the correct settings would be my goal.
