Your opinion about my lenses and my photography attitude?

Hey! I've got a Canon 60D with the following lenses:

Canon EF 15mm 2.8 Fisheye
Canon EF 28mm 1.8
Canon EF 100mm 2.8 Macro
Canon EF 200mm 2.8 II
(and a 430EX II flash)

As you may have noticed I'm not a big fan of zoom lenses, it distracts me too much in relating to framing, so with my four primes I have to move around a lot and composition is for me easier than with a zoom, where you first have to choose the focal length and then start to think how your final frame should look like. This may sound stupid, I don't know. I also prefer the superior IQ of the primes, as my budget isn't unlimited.

In the not to near future I am planning to go full frame. It may also been a reason I chose these four specific lenses. The plan is to get a full frame and then replace the 28mm 1.8 with a 35mm 1.4.

I like to shoot a lot of subjects, and I prefer to make spontaneous pictures, that's what I do most. You can also call it street photography. I am looking forward to make some conceptional pictures, also because I want to build up a portfolio. I shot around 12'000 pictures with my 60D (and 9'000 with my sold 400D) and I've got plenty of splendid shots. The only thing is my best shots are very broad regarding theme and subjects, and I really don't know yet what I am best at shooting or what's my favorite subjects are. Well, actually I prefer to shoot people. Until now more without a set up, also because I haven't got the opportunity to have a model and a studio at hand. Or enough free time and a model with enough free time. Whatever.

Soo, what do you think about this? What way am I going? Thank you for every opinion and reply!

DPreview Nikon D800 D4 what the professionals think

http://www.dpreview.com/articles/2896866820/nikon-d4-d800-what-do-the-professionals-think

Well normally this would have gone into the third party section, but I think it's an interesting insight into what pro photographers are looking for in a camera, and might well illustrate what design criteria Canon have used for the 5D MkIII.

Points of interest are the importance of video - good video, low light performance, and perhaps surprisingly the number of photographers who say they cannot afford to upgrade. MP count seems unimportant to most if not all, with one saying that 12MP is sufficient for print & web use.

If they are representative of pros in general then the 5D MkIII rumoured specs look to be very well placed.

Building kit around 5D Mark II...

Hey all,

Looking for a few suggestions - figured this would be the right place...

I'm an aspiring cinematographer who has decided to switch from my XH-A1 to a 5D Mark II (I saw on the forum that there is an expected price-drop on the 5D come early March - awesome). I'll most likely be purchasing the 5D Kit that includes a Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM AF Lens. However, I'm looking to have more than just one lens in my kit.

I have an extra $1500-$2k to spend and am looking to add at least 2 to 3 more lenses -- My question for you guys; Which lenses would you recommend for video on the 5D?

Thanks in advance guys!

70 - 200 f/4L vs. 70 - 300 f4-5.6 IS USM

So I have been shooting with the xsi kit lens and a nifty fifty for a while and am in the market to purchase my first telephoto lens. I have not owned a telephoto lens before, so I cannot fully list what I will be shooting. However, I suspect I will mostly be using it over the next decade to shoot my kids as they grow up (I have a 3yo daughter and a new one due the end of March). So kids playing, school plays, sports, some landscape and closeup shots (flowers etc) and any other shot that tickles my fancy in this focal range. I also hope go full frame at some point along the way (maybe a well loved 5D mkII in a couple of years).

I am struggling with the decision between going for improved IQ and AF of the 70 - 200 or take advantage of the extra reach and IS of the 70 - 300. While I don't have a camera with video yet, I plan on having one eventually, so the IS would be nice for that.

So I'm here for your opinions. What would YOU go for and why? I don't know what my needs are because I've never owned a lens in this focal range.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Maybe if I win the lottery (which I don't play) I can get myself the 5d mk III and 70 - 200 f2.8L IS II and say suck it to the poor mans L lens.

Neck Strap Loops Design

So after looking over the leaked picks, I started thinking about the neck strap loops and just wondering why they are positioned the way they are like on the 5D Mark III.

If I'm wearing the strap on my neck, the camera points down, and with a lens, can get heavy so the strap gets all funky at the loops. Why not either have something that rotates with the straps/weight or place them vertically? When holding a camera to take a shot, there is no weight on the loops so I just don't see the point of having them the way they are.

Just a small design pet peeve and also to try take my mind off of the coming announcement :)

What is the latest for the 7Dmkii/70D?

There has been nada info since the CR1 about no 7Dmk2 and you would think there would be a bit of buzz about the possible 70D and it's specs. I'd be interested in the 70D if it had an improved AF over the 60D, took CF cards, had either a dual D-4 or a single D-5 processor, a mag body and hopefully, no on board flash. 1 custom mode would be good for me. All in all no matter what it's called, 7D2 or 70D I'd just like to see a new body for the top of the crops.

Interesting camera phone from Nokia

So, found the Nokia 808 PureView through another forum, and it's a very interesting idea. Take a smallish physical size, pack it full of pixels, and then use the 'crop' factor to fake a zoom. And then (my thoughts) you can always keep it wide, and combine pixels to scale down the size of an image from humongo to normal camera phone size and get rid of some of the noise in low light.

where to buy cheaper... Tokyo / Hong Kong / Australia / home + Australian Taxes?

I'm new to this forum, so I wasn't quite sure where to post this thread... I hope it's alright :)

I'm about to travel a year around Australia and wanted to buy some lenses and maybe also a new camera. I don't think the 5DII successor will be available by then but anyway...

Someone suggested me to stop over in Japan to buy my gear. I'm not sure if it makes sense. I started to google and found also suggestions about Hong Kong. Could someone give advice on that topic?

Desired lenses:
EF 16-35mm 2.8L II (Switzerland: 1340 CHF ~ 1615 USD)
TS-E 17mm 4.0 (2260 ~ 2725 USD)
maybe something else

I guess the price difference isn't that huge between different countries? I checked at a website from HongKong and had a price difference of about 10-20%. Is the warranty on Lenses internationally valid? And will I have to pay for the australian customs tax/fees even if I'm only travelling?

Last but not least, since it's my first post, I wanted to thank CRaig so much, it's a great site...! :)

Sigma 8-16mm vs Tokina 11-16mm

I am looking for a wide angle lens and I am considering to buy one of two lenses below:

Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom

OR

Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens

Does anyone have a suggestion? Any technical comparison? Which one has the best IQ?

They are about the same price, around $700. Sigma is wider but Tokina has f/2.8. I also noticed that Tokina has announced the version II of its lens (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=1855).

Thanks

Sigma 500mm f4 or f5.6 OS lens - any hopes of one??

Canon new lens prices are climbing into the stratosphere.
Opening here for an upgrade of the Sigma 500/4.5 to an f4 with OS - at say 50-60% of the price of the latest Canon equivalent.
Question is how good is Sigma's OS system?
Time for Sigma, Sony or even Pentax to produce some competition to C and N who seem to have the long lens market to themselves.
Once had a Sigma 100-300mm f4 - a very good well made lens - I'm sorry I sold it!

5D MK3 + Headphone jack

Hello all,

Just before anyone gets the hump, I use DSLR's for photography just as much as I do for shooting commercials so please don't shoot me down for this one. I've had a play with the images of the side of the body (made negative, adjusted contrast etc etc) and I'm 99% sure that next to the mic is a headphone jack. I've compared it to the XF305 and C300 design and to me they look identical.

Just saying.

Canon 24-70mm f2.8 USM II Pre-orders!

Hey guys,

I've been going back and forth on whether I should invest my money in the new 5DMKIII that is bound to be out shortly or the new Canon 24-70 f2.8 II.

My 5DMKII does an admirable job already and I can't think of a reason why "I" would need to upgrade to the MKIII (save for tech envy) so I decided to put my money on the new 24-70 instead.

Preordered mine from BHPhoto this morning. Curious however, with a ship date of April 17th and large distributor's such as BHphoto - how long do you think it will take them to fulfill preorders? Would I be better off buying it locally or at another smaller online retailer where most people wouldn't go to?

With BH being so large, I'm sure that will impact their allotment during the initial shipment of the lens. This is my first time pre-ordering camera tech before and I'm just kind of curious what the turn around time might look like!

Thanks!

Nokia 808 - 41-megapixel sensor

Not Canon news, but a sensitive issue nevertheless.

Sensor megapixels:

http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/02/27/nokia-808-pureview-%E2%80%93-revolutionary-camera-technology-great-smartphone/

Published by Ian Delaney on February 27, 2012

BARCELONA, Spain – Today we announce the Nokia 808 PureView. This is our first smartphone to feature our exclusive new PureView technology, which completely blows away any prior expectations about the quality of camera phone photography.

The Nokia 808 PureView features a 41-megapixel sensor with our highest performance Carl Zeiss optics to date and Nokia’s brand-new pixel oversampling technology.
Sorry, did you just say 41-megapixels?

Yes, that’s right. But this combination isn’t about shooting pictures the size of billboards! Instead, it’s about creating amazing pictures at normal, manageable sizes. There’s a combination of benefits.

5D MarkIII at Focus On Imaging (UK) 4-7th March ??

Last year Canon snubbed the Focus On Imaging Event here in the UK
a grave dissapointment to many.

This year they are back.
We will definatly get to see the new 1dX

What are the chances that if the 5d III is announced on Friday 2nd that we may even see a copy at Focus?
Maybe even some lenses and the flash announced..

Canon have got some making up to do for letting us all down last year.

My guess is that you not get even close to the canon stand this year with all the hype.

Canon 400mm f5.6 L lens - upgrade needed.

This small lightweight lens desperately needs an IS upgrade.
Stop down say 2/3 stop it yields very sharp results - on a tripod.
It is marginally sharper than the the 100-400mm L at 400 (I've checked both sided by side) and I have read user reports that it is optically a better performer than the expensive 400mm f4 DO.
With the 200-400mm f4 available this year and a possible upgrade to the 100-400 coming up will Canon even bother?
It even has a sliding hood - so much convenient than the clip-ons you get these days. But without IS it is obsolete!
I am sure that an IS version would be a big seller for Canon - but maybe Canon have decided the profits are with the 8,000+USD big prime and zoom lenses rather than with this little one!
