</strong>The front rubber grips of some EOS REBEL T4i units produced in certain lots between May 31st through June 27th, 2012 may turn white after a short period of time. We have determined after inquiry with the rubber manufacturer and analysis, that the white substance is zinc bis (N,N’-dimethyldithiocarbamate).</p>
<p>Zinc bis is not used in the production of this product. However, the quantity of rubber accelerator used in the affected production lots was slightly higher than usual. As a result the rubber grips may turn white due to a chemical reaction with the rubber accelerator and other substances. High temperature and high humidity may contribute to this condition. Zinc bis (N,N’-dimethyldithiocarbamate), which becomes deposited on the rubber surface, is created as a result of this chemical reaction.</p>

</strong>Some EOS Rebel T4i digital SLR cameras produced from May 31 through June 27, 2012 may be affected.</p>
<p>You can use the serial number to check whether your camera is affected by this phenomenon. If the sixth digit of the serial number is “1″ please follow the procedure below. If the sixth digit of the serial number is “2″ or higher, your camera is not affected.</p>

Hello Everyone,

After many months frequenting this website, I decided to post.

I have been experimenting with slow shutter as of late and have two questions about ND Filters.

QUESTION 1: I am getting a weird effect with my ND Filter. Why? Examples below.

Here's what is used in these example photos: Canon 5D MKII, 24-70 F2.8L, Hoya Variable ND Filter, Remote Controller.

First (Good) Photo Settings: 50mm, ISO160, F18, 0.5 Sec Shutter
Second (Bad) Photo Settings: 50mm, ISO160, F18, 30.0 Sec Shutter

It's obvious that it's something to do with the shutter speed ...but isn't that the point of an ND Filter? I want to take long exposures ...but every time I do, I get this weird blue smudge.

QUESTION 2: How do you expose properly with an ND Filter? The exposure meter does not get effected when I place an ND filter on ...So how do I compensate exposure accurately when I put the filter on?

Greetings everyone! This is my first post on this forum although I've been a reader since the beginning of the year (2012). I've always loved the concept of photography but never had the budget to really get started until I ordered my first DSLR (T3i) in December of last year. I got my first camera on 01/04/2012 and have since "upgraded" to a 60D (for some of the features the T3i didn't have like Kelvin Temp WB, Small RAW file size, etc., and acquired a small collection of lenses. I would like to know what lenses others out there own, why they love/hate them, and how long they've been into such a great hobby/ profession. I realize it's a very broad forum topic and that everyone's lens needs are different.

My work background is in Audio Engineering. Music used to be my creative outlet but somewhere in the last 12 years, it has turned into more work than play and I am grateful to have found something just as fun in both a creative and technical way. I eventually want to explore the full frame world but read somewhere that building a collection of good glass should be a priority over purchasing camera bodies.

My questions for you all are:
1) What lenses do you own and why do you love/hate each of them?
2) How long have you been into photography?
3) Any random tips for a noob like myself?

There's no big reason for my questions. I'm just curious. Just geeking out on gear from one gear head to another =)

Here is a list of my lenses in order of purchase date. I know there is definitely some redundancy in my choices for purchases but sometimes you just wanna buy gear to buy gear. My business is doing well so I can afford to play a little.

1) 50mm 1.4: Thought i should get this after I purchased (and returned) the 50mm 1.8 (too loud when focusing, slow focus). My first experiences with smooth bokeh. I don't use this very much when I walk around but have used it for photo shoots with some of my artist. It's too tight for general use (for me) but works well for portraits.
2) 24-105mm L: love it's versatility. purchased after I realized how much I didn't like the 18-55mm kit lens. Can't wait to see what this feels like on a bigger sensor. I am starting to feel the low light limitations of my 60D at f/4 but by far my most used lens. So far it fairs pretty well in somewhat low light coffee house gigs. Owning this makes it hard to justify buying the 24-70 2.8 L II but I want one eventually.
3) 10-22mm: most of the "cool shot" comments I get are on pics taken from this lens @10mm. I love the distortion. It's fun to play with. Sometimes I feel like it's not very sharp but that could just be my technique. Overall, it's the lens I have the most FUN with but I can't wait to compare this to a 16-35 2.8L on a FF. Any thoughts on this comparison?
4) 35L: my favorite lens for use when doing little music videos for youtube with friends. First picture I took with it right out of the box BLEW me away. The colors were awesome. No flash needed. Just amazing. But for whatever reason, I don't use it as much as I expected myself to. Though this will stay in my kit forever or until it dies. I love the images I get. I initially purchased the Sigma 30mm 1.4 but It was front focusing like crazy and didn't want to deal with it so I decided to just go with the L.
5) 40mm pancake: just had to have it. My first "pre-ordered" lens. It's cute. Mainly purchased for long days of walking around Disneyland. (We're annual pass holders.) I strip my camera down to it's barebones minimum weight and it's like having a point and shoot (at least when compared to the weight of the body+grip+flash+24-105). I don't use it otherwise but eventually would like to get a T4i "for the wife" and take advantage of the STM for use as a second camera angle on the videos I shoot.

That's my list. I'd like to get a 100mm Macro IS or 180mm Macro, and a 70-200 f/2.8 IS II down the line but I think I want to purchase a 2nd flash first and play with multiple flash setups. OCF is also very fun. Looking forward to reading your replies! =) Good day to you all

Today I came to a realization that Canon is indeed behind in the current camera market. I LOVE Canon products and LOVE my 1D X, but I also give training to new and upcoming photographers. I get a lot of questions on what camera to buy and what is the best camera and of course I know the best camera is the one you have in your hands, but how do you currently advise a new photographer to buy Canon if they just cannot deliver?

For example... I have someone who wants a camera to use when going overseas for travelling and holiday purposes (Powershot G1X will work here) and not sure if they will get serious about photography. But they also go away to a game farm frequently and wants to get a bit closer to the birds and wildlife. (SLR territory) Video is a nice to have feature seeing that it will also be a family camera.

Now newbies don't have a clue about ISO and shutterspeed and aperture and focal length etc - they want to push the button and get a great shot. Of course they will be disappointed and then they want to learn more on how to get the better shot.

Comparing Cameras AND availability just showed me once again that Canon has seriously dropped the ball. For what this student want the EOS 600D would be sufficient, but why force him to buy a Canon because I like Canon if the D3200 is clearly the better choice? I am comparing with the EOS 600D, because Canon had to recall the EOS 650D, once again, and it is not available - so in my opinion that isn't even a contender for someone who is burning to buy a camera.

I advised about 3 or 4 people in the last week to buy Nikon, and it really hurt! I still love my Canon gear, but Canon left a deep scar with the delays of the 1D X, the delays in the 5D III and now the EOS 650.

My only way of staying positive is believing they have something big up their sleeves... a game changer. Canon was the first to release a full frame DSLR and this made A LOT of Nikon users switch to Canon and they got a big market share there. Canon will have to bring out another miracle like the full frame DSLR - or they will lose all that ground they built up with it...

Buying used, resale value, is the 85mm worth 2x the price of a 135mm etc

Hello All - looking for some help deciding on my next lens. I'm shooting with a 5D Mark III and have the 40mm, 85 1.8 and 24-105L. I'm looking for something with more reach but to also provide me with versatility as well. I want to be able to shoot my kid's soccer games, but want the ability to use the lens for more than just outdoor sports. I would certainly like the extra reach of the 70-300, but I'm afraid it won't be as versatile with the smaller max aperature. The 70-200 2.8 IS II is nice and fast, but it's expensive and won't reach quite as far. Canon's current lens rebates help for sure - so both are in budget.

Suggestions?

Hi all, new here and new to photography

Just need to ask a simple question.......
I recently took a group photo (around 8 people) using 5D3 with a 50mm 1.4 but it came out blur except where I was focused. I think I was standing around 3m.......kept backing up until I got everyone into frame.

I didn't find anything specific topic for Vanguard gear so though make one for you opinion about it.
So basic things first, I'm going to order a small package from Vanguard which holds in it:
- UP-Rise 45 bp, Alta Pro 263AT and SBH-100 ballhead.

Vanguard has nice list of TIPA prizes on different products and some of them have got it twice so I would think it's pretty well and truly trusty but I would really love to hear your opinion about it.

I don't think I've ever paid the "normal" retail price for Canon glass, as it seems like they run rebates or sales a few times per year - and I rarely need to purchase a lens under a deadline.

I'm looking to buy a new Zeiss lens, but haven't seen them go "on sale" (e.g., rebates, etc.), but haven't been watching prices too long. Has anyone ever seen Zeiss glass go on sale?

Hi,

I shoot with a 5D mk III and I need a second body for sports.
Mainly what I need is to shoot powder skiers/snowboarders coming down on the hill, and I shoot them or from the bottom of the mountain or from helicopter.
I know the best results would be with a 600 lens but I dont have it.
I was thinking that maybe the 400mm is not enough (5D3 2x TC III 70-200) so to buy a second used body.

Among crop bodies with one has the best auto focus and pretty good fps?

Any experience with that setup ether sport or wildlife? (50D/7D 2x TC III and 70-200 IS II)
If someone has some samples with that setup, please post them.

Hi, there. At some german speaking forums user report problems with EOS 7D FW2.0 which started after the firmware update.

Problems reported:
- 1 (!) user reported that third party battery packs (weiss) were no longer recognized. This could not be confirmed by anybody so far. I guess this issue is not related to the firmware update.
- Some users report that the 7D freezes from time to time and can only be revived be removing and inserting the battery pack. There are multiple reports also from experienced user, so there is a chance that this issue is indeed related to FW 2.0.

Can you confirm one of the problems above?
Did you experience other problems introduces with FW 2.0?
Please report.

I am starting to see sale pricing on the 60D. Last time I observed sale prices like this, the T4i replaced the T3i. While these are just internet prices and Canon Store prices, I will keep an eye on local brick and mortar shops in the Detroit area to confirm my suspicions.

Could this be a build up to the October anticipation of the 6D?

Is the 70D nearing release to the masses?

Hello, completed the firmeware update, all was going smooth till today.

I was shooting at a big buck still in velvet, a little dark, c1 set up for birds, ISO to auto, camera set to 800 max ISO.

To my horror after checking photos found grained out, info showed ISO at 3200???

Anyone else had any similar problems or could you test on your similar set up to see if it works for you.

Hi,
I like to travel a lot and loves a large zoom. My recent lens, EFs18-200, which is used with a 7D, has broken and has to be replaced and I'm looking for a high quality lens in the wide-tele segment. When looking at the L lenses the only one that seems to fit my needs when travelling is the L 28-300. However, it really has a 'come and get me, I have a nice lens' approach, when travelling, it is very heavy, expensive and it was launched back in 2004. So Im struggeling wheather to buy this 28-300 lens or buy the EFs 18-200 once again although I don't appreciate its quality very much. I would really appreciate tips about alternatives from you guys out there and opinions about what could be expected at the Photokina coming up in september. Does anyone think there will be 'mark II' of the 28-300 L lens or variations thereof?

Once a custom white balance setting has been recorded is there a way to delete it? I realize it is possible to record a new setting over the old one but I was wondering about clearing the setting all together.

I was at the Pro Photo Expo in Pasadena Saturday. At the Canon booth they had the 1DX demo. I also ask the canon rep about the new 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, he said its like nite and day. But when I mount my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM on the 1DX, took couple pictures and then swap the new IS II version on the 1DX. They both look little similar. Whats your feedback? Does it worth to upgrade to the IS II ?

After acquiring this recently along with an L-358 Meter together as a set, the RT is not compatible with the Elinchrom system..darn. Apparently, best I can tell, there are no Sekonic modules that work with Elinchrom SkyPorts..double darn. Though I can use the standard flash icon meter and put it in the queue, once it see the flash fire from Elinchrom DLites it does offer a fairly accurate reading but no way to do an exact sync.

If anyone in the U.S. wants to take this Module off my hands just send me a PM. If there is a module I am not aware of that does work with the L-358 and can radio sync with the Skyports I would be most interested.

I've got a few really top shots from the Olympics which I'm wanting to get printed really decent quality for framing.

I'm guessing that getting them done at Snappy Snaps probably isn't the best option but I've no idea where would be best get them printed or what type of printing / paper would be best.

I'm based in London but don't mind getting them done online if necessary.

I've attached an example (hope it works?!) so any suggestions would be very welcome

Hi,
I currently own a 7D which is my second body after a XSi that was my very first dslr. I am planning on upgrading to a 5D Mark III before the end of the year but I cannot keep the 7D so my EF-S lenses will become useless.
Here is my question: A friend is selling her Canon 28-300 L and I am thinking that this could be a great upgrade opportunity to move from my EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM and have a single EF lens for travel with a great zoom range and L quality. Is this right? Will I get better performance than with my 70-300 USM and my EF-s 17-55 f/2.8 (which the 28-300 would also replace)?
My current lenses are:
- Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
- Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM
- Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM (selling it if I get the 28-300 L)
- Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM (selling it when I get the 5D Mark III, but I will really miss this lens (maybe getting a 24-105 if I don't purchase the 28-300... options are welcome)
- Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM (which is not going to work with the full frame and I will miss... for sure I will end up getting a Sigma 12-24)

I recently purchased these lens for video work but will also certainly try them for stills as well.

Does anyone have any experience with them in either capacity? The adapters (two sets) are in the mail and I haven't been able to try them yet.

Hi all. I have been wondering if I need MRC on a 10 stop B+W ND filter. The price difference is 60 bucks more than the single coating. At 10 stops of light reduction, is it worth the extra expense?

Okay so I visited luminouslandscape's forums and I found this great technique for really natural looking hdr.

1. In bridge, choose your files, tools->photoshop->Merge to HDR pro **
2. Then all you need to do in that HDR'page'(or whatever it is, sorry don't speak perfect english) is to change the mode from 16bit to 32bit and remove ghosts.
3. Save the file as 32bit tiff.
4. Go to bridge and open the file in camera raw and do your magic

5. profit??

**You probably should first do lens correction before the hdr.
