3D or 2D really possible?

Hi All,

Just a little discussion on the possibility of a Canon 3D or 2D camera, do you really believe such a camera can be made, I'm thinking anything that could be higher than a 5D3 and below a 1DX could kill the market for a 1DX, I think Canon know this could be a deal breaker for anyone who would want to upgrade to a 1D style body, The only reason I am posting this is because I really hope there could be a possibility of such a camera range, I'm going to guess the next High Mega Pixel camera from Canon is going to be in the form of a 1D style body and just as expensive as the 1DX so no harm is done to their flag ship camera, this will leave me in a slight problem to upgrade, I'm dying to upgrade, but not as far as £4,500 ( I live in the UK )

If a high mega Pixel camera came out with no video Id even be happy, in the form of a 3D or 2D, but whats our guessing on what position this new camera will stand?

Cheers all, just a thought

Auto focus points - The more, the better? I don't think so......

Hello everyone - To get right to the point....

Auto focus points - Is it me or does it seem that canon has jumped on the bandwagon with an overwhelming amount of auto focus points?

Honestly, when i'm photographing anything from Seniors to Weddings...engagements...the whole sha-bang, I can't stand using just the center point as many photographers do, but rather I am constantly dialing between all points re-positioning my camera to get the shot.

(a quick note before low-light photographers jump in on the conversation...When I photograph in low-light situations, the primes come out and I use the AF on the back of the camera (center focus) and hold my focal length in order to focus and re-position)

So, here's my beef...what good is it to have 61 auto focus points when you shoot like me...and use them all the time. Would I have to dial all through them just to get the focus area and then miss the shot? Is this a gimmick? Similarly to the Megapixel wars? Just to entice those on the fence?

Before landscapers join in, too... most successful landscape photographers are usually shooting in manual, so please don't bother commenting on how they use all their AF points...because that's BS.

So, let me recap - landscape photogs shoot in manual or set a "Range" to focus on...low light can focus using the center focus and recompose their shot...weddings photogs either use a focus/Recompose or selective AF points...

Is the 61 AF points really just for those who were suckered into purchasing an expensive camera and can only set it to Automatic?

One last thing....Please don't mistake my humorous demeanor for the need to respond with erroneous and illegitimate information...I am honestly curious how other photographers feel about useless AF Points.

Thx.

7D Pricing Issue

Why are the prices listed on Canon Rumors (under "Price Watch") inaccurate? I've been following the prices for the 7D and i've often noticed that the price listed on this site are much lower than when you click on the retailer's website. For example, it says that Adorama is selling the 7D for $1349, but their actual current price is really $1549. You would think that the prices would be more accurate, especially since it states that the prices are updated daily.

dilemma

wondering if some of you with portrait experience can chime in on my dilemma. Up until now the majority of my work has been day time sporting events so I've ended up with a 7d, the 17-55 2.8, 70-200 f4 is, 28 1.8 (impulse buy I rarely use), 85 1.8 used mainly for family and kid portraits, and the nifty fifty 1.8. In any case I've been able to parlay my pictures of kids playing soccer, baseball, tennis, etc into a fairly steady family and children portrait side business. Now that side of the business has generated enough income to make a little investment in it. I'm considering a 5d mark ii and am having trouble deciding if I want the 24-105 that comes with the kit as it's such a screaming deal, or do I want a 135L, or sell the 70-200 f4is and pick up the 70-200 2.8ii is. Budget is $3000-3500. Right now I'm leaning towards the 135L as I'm a portrait bokeh addict. so far I've been able to get away with the 85 for older kids and families and the 70-200 when dealing with multiple active kids giving up bokeh on the zoom for versatility. I'm thinking I'm going to miss the 85 FOV on crop and will want the 135 to replace it on FF. Then again I am just overlapping focal lengths on the 70-200 so maybe the 2.8 version solves all the problems. Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated.

Techradar: 12 EV dynamic range for 650D

I just found this article comparing the Canon 650D, 600D, Nikon D5100 and Sony Alpha 37:
http://www.techradar.com/reviews/cameras-and-camcorders/cameras/digital-slrs-hybrids/canon-650d-1083870/review?artc_pg=5

If you look at the lower graph, the dynamic range of the 650D looks a lot like the Nikon counterpart with only a gap of 1EV. However i'd wait for independent confirmation of the results and for techradar to recheck their data because the labelling for the 600D is wrong (pink curve is also labelled 650D) and it seems that the 600D has the JPEG curve in the TIFF result. So we wait for the techradar people to sober up and redo the graphs.

On DxOMark the 600D scored 11EV and the Nikon D5100 scored 13EV at ISO100 screen resolution. If the 12EV figure is true that would be a modest step forward.

Canon 1D X Arrived from Crutchfield

Anyone else receive one from someplace besides B&H or Adorama? Mine just arrived from Crutchfield today to my delight. Unfortunately, I won't be able to enjoy it for a while as I am out of town.

Delivered On: Monday, 07/09/2012 at 1:50 P.M.
Shipped/Billed On:07/03/2012
Type:Package
Weight:8.40 lbs

I just had regular ground shipping. It was sent prior to the 4th of July and arrived today in mid-U.S.A.

Since I am unable to do any tests until I return home, here is a very trustworthy analysis of the 1D X sensor by a well-known astrophotographer:

Astrophotography isn't my field, but it's very interesting.

FIRST one in GERMANY

Hey guys,

Today morning I recieved a phone call from GM-Foto, a big Canon Pro Shop in Frankfurt, Germany.
They told me that they got 8 1Dx's in the morning and I am one lucky person to get one.

I ordered in Dec. 27th and so I was within one of the first people.
They also told me that Germany recieved only about 500 cameras. And I suppose to be one of the very first in the whole country to get mine!

So, it has officially reached Germany :)

Which L lens will be the first mark III?

Just something that hit me while reading the last post about 24-70 IS.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the most updated current L lenses are mark II, right? I am just counting lenses that has a "II" in its name, not stabilized/non-stabilized lenses.

Which of the current L mark II lenses do you think will be the first to be updated and receiving the mark III designation. There is one shitty EF-S kitlens currently in mark III?

My bet would be 85/1.2L III.

What would you do if you were me?

Lately, I have been thinking about how fragmented my gear really is. I currently have two different system of lenses, one being EF and the other EF-S. I have the 5D Mark II and the 550D with the 24-70L, 50mm f1.8, 18-55, and 55-250. Since these are like two different mounts, I think that I may be hampered without the compatibility to fit my lenses on all of my body. At the same time, I am thinking of revamping my kit and upgrading to something better. I usually do event photography for school, some occasional street photography, still life, and portraitures. If you had a budget of below $1500, what will you do?

I and many other 5d mkiii owners have experienced the notorious Error 80, where the camera freezes and the only way to unfreeze it is to take out the battery. It's annoying for photographers but potentially catastrophic for film makers, as the current file is lost. There are numerous reports of Eye-Fi SD cards causing Error 80, so if you've only encountered the error with Eye-Fi cards, please discount those errors as this issue is well known.

My thoughts are that if the Eye-Fi cards are definitely causing problems, then perhaps the type of card is a factor. I've had the error twice, both times with Sandisc Extreme 60mb/s CF cards (I don't think there was an SD card in the slot on either occasion).

As well as participating in the poll, please write below and say if you've had the error, and what brand / size / speed / type of cards have been in the camera at the time.

Thank you!

SX200 IS vs SX 240 HS image quality

What I actually want is a Canon compact superzoom of similar size to my SX200 IS; with the same level of controllability; RAW out of the box (no CHDK hack needed); and the APS-C sensor out of my 7D. I'm prepared to pay very good money for such pocketable convenience and image quality - but realise that I am probably in for a very long wait! ;)

Coming down to earth with a bump, I find myself needing to replace the SX200; it travels everywhere I fly on business where 6Kg of 7D and paraphenalia is a showstopper, but the front optic has picked up a scratch that is visible as a soft-focus area in the middle of nearly every photograph. Repair cost exceeds the purchase price of an SX240 HS.

I realise that there is always a new model just around the corner, but is there likely a quantum image quality improvement for compact superzooms "just around the corner"? Perhaps not my 7D's APS-C sensor, but none the less a substantial step in that direction? A new technology rather than a tweak to today's CMOS?

I ask because I borrowed an SX240 HS to help me decide whether to buy one, and found that whilst it takes images of demonstrably higher quality than my SX200 IS, they are still very obviously "compact" images with a gaping chasm to what I get from old 400D, never mind my 7D. The biggest of all the weaknesses is easily blown highlights.

Many thanks.

You want IS?

A patent for an EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS has surfaced finally, this has been a lens that has been talked about and desired for a long time.

We mentioned some time back that there were 5 or 6 version of the new 24-70, and one of them had IS. Canon decided against an IS version for reasons to do with weight, size and cost from what I’m told.

Sadly for the ones that want an IS version of this lens, I have little faith that such a lens will be coming any time soon. Patents can sometimes appear after a product has been announced, and that’s probably what has happened here.

Advice for trip to Hawaii

I am traveling to Oahu and I was hoping to get some advice. I will be shooting mostly candid shots of my family and also attempting some landscape shots (North shore, pearl harbor, etc). As I am traveling with my family I will have limited time to scout my shots and I need to travel light.

I have a flipside 400AW and the following gear:
5d Mark iii
16-35mm L
24-70mm L
70-200mm ii L
35mm 1.4L
85mm 1.8
100mm L
2x extender
430EX
manfrotto tripod

Any suggestions as to what part of my kit is a must? I figure I can get 4-5 lenses in my bag.

thanks in advance.

Unfair Dealers.

Have been monitoring the shipments of 1dx and 5d3 and the responses of sales people like "when you had ordered does not relate to where you stand on shipment queue." AND the BIG one "Our shipping queue is confidential."

All this points clearly to my mind that all is not fair and some people get their gear before others... Anytime anything is hidden, it has a reason to be hidden. Generally the reason is unfair.

There are some people who mention the dealer in their websites and promote them in other manners. Perhaps they get priority?
