Argh! Photos don't look like 7D photos.

I don't know what's going on here. One of the things I look for when shooting portraits is that the skin has almost a "creamy" look to it. I have shot portraits like this before without issue. However when I went to take some pictures as usual in the mid-afternoon sun yesterday I ended up with terrible skin detail/tone.

This is a shot where I actually managed to achieve something:
7477790292_4bce29e87f_z.jpg

It's close to what I want, though not fully up to my standards.

This is one of my best examples, and oddly enough one of my earliest photos with this camera:
5985054218_aebf26ba69_z.jpg

However, when I went to shoot yesterday, I got a bunch of really mediocre shots that looked like they could have been shot with my point-and-shoot. Not sure what I did wrong with the settings here.

70mm f/8 1/640

Almost all of my pictures from that day ended up with sub-tier quality.

Do you think I should have shot with a wider aperture instead? Help me out here. I've been considering adding a 5d mk iii to my camera collection so I can have a second body that's better at shots of people, but I know it won't help me take better photos.

Canon 5D MKIII UK

In the UK the 5D MKIII costs £3000 (~4800 USD), i.e. is very expensive compared to the US.
Simply Electronics have it for £2250 (~3600 USD), can anybody see any issues with buying it from these people.
I have purchased flashguns and extenders from them, and everything has been okay.

Should I get 7D now or wait for MKII?

Hey guys! I'm new to this forum and new to Photography. I've always loved taking pictures of landscape, cars, people, and just random stuff. Lol So I decided that it's time for me to grab a decent DSLR.

I'm completely new to DSLR's and photography. Still doing a lot of reading and learning on which camera I should go with. Based on the stuff I've read and learned I'm leaning towards getting the 7D. But I'm concerned that when I get the 7D now couple of months later down the road the new rumored 7D MKII comes out.

So my question is should I wait for the 7D MKII (why?) or I should just get the 7D?

<strong>Here we go again…

</strong>Thank you for using Canon products.</p>
<p>The front rubber grips of some units of the Canon EOS REBEL T4i Digital SLR camera (EOS 650D/EOS Kiss X6i overseas models) may change color (turn white) after a short period of time. Customer support for this phenomenon is described below.</p>
<p>Canon continuously strives to provide our customers with high quality, reliable products that can be used with confidence. We offer our sincerest apologies to any customers who may be inconvenienced.</p>
<p><strong>Phenomenon

</strong>The front rubber grips of some EOS REBEL T4i units produced in certain lots during the sixteen-day period between May 31st through June 15th, 2012 may turn white after a short period of time. We have determined after inquiry with the rubber manufacturer and analysis, that the substance zinc bis (N,N’-dimethyldithiocarbamate) is what causes the rubber surface to turn white.</p>
<p>Zinc bis is not used in the production of this product. However, the quantity of rubber accelerator used in the affected production lots was slightly higher than usual. As a result the rubber grips may turn white due to a chemical reaction with the rubber accelerator and other substances. High temperature and high humidity may contribute to this condition. Zinc bis (N,N’-dimethyldithiocarbamate), which becomes deposited on the rubber surface, is created as a result of this chemical reaction.</p>
<p><strong>Affected Product

</strong>Some EOS Rebel T4i digital SLR cameras produced from May 31 through June 15 may be affected.</p>
<p>You can use the serial number to check whether your camera is affected by this phenomenon. If the sixth digit of the serial number is “1″ please follow the procedure below. If the sixth digit of the serial number is “2″ or higher, your camera is not affected.</p>
<p><strong>Procedure:

</strong>1) Click on the link below to enter your serial number.</p>
<p>2) Enter the 12-digit serial number (reference the image below) from your camera then click the Submit button</p>
<p>3) One of the following messages will appear.</p>
<p>· “Your camera is NOT affected” ? No further action is required</p>
<p>· “Your camera is affected” ? Please see the Support section below</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/serial/eosdigital1/x6i-650d-t4i.html" target="_blank">Click here</a></strong> to enter your serial number (hint: read this instruction before opening that page)</p>
<p><strong>Caution on Use

</strong>The amount of zinc bis (N,N’-dimethyldithiocarbamate) detected during our testing was minimal. While Canon has not received any reports of injury or allergic reactions, depending on one’s health and physical condition, in rare cases when this substance comes into contact with skin, allergic skin reactions* may develop. In addition, if eyes are rubbed after contact with the substance, symptoms, such as red eyes, may develop.</p>
<p>As a precautionary measure, thoroughly wash your hands with water if they have come in contact with the rubber grips that have turned white. (If any medical symptoms develop, please consult your physician immediately.)</p>
<p>*Please note that the occurrence of allergic skin reactions depend on the target substance, length of contact with the target substance, one’s health and physical conditions, and sensitivity of one’s skin structure, and not everyone will be affected by allergic symptoms.</p>
<p><strong>Support

</strong>Preparations are underway to provide free repair service for affected cameras by replacement of the rubber grips. Once this repair service is available (ETA of mid July 2012), we will post an update on our web site and also notify registered users via email. Please register your EOS Rebel T4i, so that we can inform you via email when the free repair service will commence.</p>

5D Mark III firmware update 1.1.3?

Just got my new 5D Mark III today and the first thing I wanted to do was update the firmware as I had read that version 1.1.2 was released. When I went to the Canon site it showed the most current version as 1.1.3. I had heard no mention of 1.1.3. Does anyone know what all that update includes? My camera already had 1.1.2 on it. I updated to 1.1.3, it only took about 3-4 minutes.

Owning the Canon 200-400 f/4L Vs 400 f/2.8L II

When the 200-400 lens becomes available I will be purchasing it or the 400 2.8 prime. The delima of which of these 2 lenses would be more effective is making me mad.

The versatility of the 200-400 with the built in ext will be excellent. To think, though, that with the 1.4X and 2X ext gives you 3 incredibly useful focal lengths is equally incredible.

Owning the 70-200 f/2.8 II and using both ext's on it often, I think that the 200 to 280mm range of the 200-400 would go unused much of the time.

I have owed the 600 f/4 300 f/2.8 and the 200 f/2. Of all of those lenses, the 300 f/2.8 was my favorite.

Has anyone else given this much thought?

B&H 1DX Order Fulfillment Tracking

I'm starting this thread to provide some relief for those of us who ordered a 1DX from B&H.

Apparently B&H is giving positive indication if your camera is due to ship soon or saying there is no update available if they are not expecting it to go out within the next few days.

We should be able to track based on date and time ordered from the users here willing to share if they have received positive feedback (or a tracking number) or negative response.

STATUS BASED ON THIS THREAD (updated 7/18/12 1:30PM EST):

It sounds like orders placed before 11:45 AM EST on 3/16 have shipped with tracking numbers. Orders placed after 3/16 11:45AM EST have no known expected shipping time. (unless someone here posts information that contradicts that, I will update regularly)

Information based on:

KoolKurle:
"Just got an email from B&H, my 1DX web order (3/14/12 ~2:30pm eastern) has shipped"

Erik S. Klein:
"Email confirmation time stamped [3/14] 3:31 EST. Tracking number for Wednesday delivery via 2 day air."

neuroanatomist:
"March 14th, 6 PM Eastern. Date: 03/14/2012
Order #: 1019890xxx
Order Type: WEB
Shipping Method: UPS Ground
Order Status: Shipped

Scheduled Arrival Date: 07/10/12"

--------------------------------------

Rules: Please post if you have checked with B&H; online chat, phone conversation, checked your order status on their site, have received either positive or negative indication of your order shipping along with the timestamp (please use EST since B&H is in NY) of your order confirmation email (please don't post order numbers)

Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II Delayed Again

<strong>Not good news

</strong><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2012/07/canon-ef-24-70-f2-8l-ii-availability/" target="_blank">Contrary to what I was told recently</a> by a few retailers, Canon has delayed the release of the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II again. This time until mid September 2012. The reason for the delay is said to be for “final adjustments in production”.</p>
<p><strong>CR’s Take

</strong>This is tough news for a lot of people. I own a lens rental business and not being able to find more new 24-70′s in Canada to add to stock has caused a few moments of stress. We were really hoping for a smooth switchover from version 1 to version 2.</p>
<p>However, if this is for quality control reasons, then the delay is worth it. No matter how much it drives us bonkers.</p>

5d Mark III (Is it worth it for me?)

Hello All!

I've been thinking over the past few weeks on wether or not I should get a 5d Mark III. (This is my first full frame DSLR i plan to buy, never owned another full frame dslr, upgrading from a t3i)

I've seen some downing reviews by those who expected more from Mark iii (especially on the sharpeness/resolution).

The nikkor ais lenses have been stepping up the game for the Mark III (Nikor Ais 50mm f1.2/Nikkor Ais 28mm f2.8) in a short film called copelandia (Canon 5D Mark III - Copelandia on Vimeo) and i feel convinced to get one.

Have any of you guys who have bought the 5d mark iii regret buying it for video with the future to come cameras like the Black Magic Cinema Camera or perhaps the future gh3? (only thing that kept me from abandoning the mark iii and going for the black magic camera was that it wasnt full frame and internal battery)

The Mark III for me, as a filmmaker, is a very big investment, I dont know if its worth it. I still have hopes for the Mark III to shine with future firmware upgrades + ML (Does anyone think the future of magic lantern can unlock the 5d Mark III's capabilities whiach canon had crippled to protect its cinema line? Will we see another "gh2-like" hack?), but i just wanted some opinions before I take this risk. ( I do have extra money from selling my old t3i to buy those nikkor lenses which have seem to suite the Mark III perfectly for video )

-Thankyou again :)

Upgrade 300 F4 IS with 300 f2.8 IS

With the new 300 F2.8 IS II available, there are a large number of used 300 f2.8 IS available for sale.

I have had my 300 F4 IS for about 4 months and have been very pleased with the results; speed, sharpness, color rendition, etc. However, what I read about the f2.8 IS says it is even better (best).

Is this a no brainer to spend the $3000-$3500 on the f2.8 IS to get superior results than the f4 IS?

Which lenses to pick up next?

Dear all,

I looked through the topics, however I wasn't able to find the same topic within 5 minutes, so I decided to just go for it and ask you guys.

My equipment is a 16-35mm, a 50mm and a 70-200mm.
Now however, I'm in need of a macro lens and I can't quite decide which one to pick: whether I should get myself the 100mm f/2.8 Macro with IS or pick up the 180mm f/3.5L.

Since I use a FF camera and am waiting for the 1D X, I thought probably those extra 80mm would be a nice thing for me. However I heard AF is pretty slow. Is it really that bad? I hope it's not like my old Sigma 70-300 which I've sold?! That one was ridiculously slow. All in all that was really what made me not buy the lens yet - it's still a lot of money.
The 100mm has plus regarding IS, f/2.8 and I could also use it as a portrait lens - with the 50mm I need to go too close to the subject for most shots IMO. If I'd get the 180mm I'd probably need the 85mm as well.

Any ideas what to pick?

Macbook pro retina advice

Sooooo, I'm in the market for a new macbook to do my editing on and general computer stuff. I'm on a tight budget!

I wanted to wait to see how much the 13 Inch macbook pro Retina [can't afford the 15inch] will cost [prob shipping oct] and more importantly, what size SSD the 'cheaper' version will ship with because I can't have less than 250G. but now I'm leaning towards getting 13 inch mbp without retina because it comes with enough space, is fast enough, within budget and can be upgraded at a later date when I have saved a bit of money. The only thing that really puts me off is the screen, its glossy [reflective] and is the lowest rez of the macbooks, even the macbook airs have a higher rez screen.

I have seen the 15inch mbp retina screen [twice] and I have to say it's pretty damn fine, for photos it's stunning. Yet there are a few drawbacks, websites look like crap atm because of the higher rez. Apps that haven't been upgraded yet have blurry text, I loaded up photoshop and imported a pic that looked amazing in aperture and it looked pretty bad. I guess apps will be updated soon enough though but some websites might even take a few years to be optimized for retina/hi rez.
Another problem is that people have reported screen burning and other faults, how long will it take before initial problems are sorted? Also the machine is non user upgradeable and difficult to repair, leaving you at the mercy of apple and the really reasonable prices they charge you to fix stuff :P

So is it better to future proof with the retina display and hope I don't need to add any upgrades and pray it doesn't break?
Or get the regular 13inch, put up with the display, enjoy cheaper repair bills and the ability to upgrade RAM and HD?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

1DX - Ai Servo Issue - Low light focus failure! Final Update 05/09/12

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 05/09/12
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally got an answer for this guys: It's a feature...

CPS London via CPS Australia:

"On the first issue of AF tracking in low light. Everything you found was correct and the camera needs to be dropped back to 10fps to AF in the lowest light conditions. At 10fps the camera can focus fast and effectively @ -2 Ev Level but at 12fps the Ev Level is changed to -0.5 Ev. This is because of the light reduction when the mirror moves at that speed. The camera does this automatically. This is what you were experiencing under the conditions of the cat walk. This is comparable to all professional 35mm products out there on the market"

On a side note: does the picture below with the 10 and 12 fps comparison even remotely look like 0ev let alone -2EV ?

Anyway - since I hadn't heard from Canon, chasing it up every day I actually switched over to a D4 setup after a mishap with the 1DX and AF assist (bug 2) at a reception - and haven't been happier - I don't have these limitation anymore. It's less a lottery and more consistent frame to frame shots, low light is substantially better AF and i can actually see what i am focusing on - finally.

Anyways hopefully this will help the PJ's understand what is happening.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 21/08
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Still no word from Canon regarding the findings. However they have replaced the my body - I now have a body starting with SN 05 rather then 04.

So changing nothing but FPS L to 10 FPS I ran a very simple test:

1dx%20v2.png

So 2nd unit, brand spanking new and exhibits same issue.

If this body doesn't have a bug with the 70-200 f2.8 II/600EX combo, I'll put up with not being able to use 12fps and hope they fix it via firmware update.

Although a month with no reply is just bad form from Canon.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 31/07
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Replicated issue with a brand new 1DX at the store I bought mine from. It's not isolated as I had hoped - staff can't believe it either.

Waiting on canon now

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 29/07
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Issue has been isolated to anything more then 10 fps when shooting in low light - Initial target lock is hindered and at times target subject can not be locked on (lens racks to infinity and stops) - af servo tracking is reduced by 80% in some instances the af tracking stops completely.

And by low light I mean - my testing area is a 60w equivalent cfw room light, 4mx4m room and my girlfriends face (porcelain skin dark eyebrows and dark eyes plenty of contrast). In direct comparison my trusty 7D locks on and tracks without issues.

Setting the servo between 3 and 10 fps fixes the issue on the 1DX

Many thanks to justaphotographer for isolating this issue.

Have reported to Canon - waiting to see a resolution - for now set fps to 10 or less.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 27/07:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK so speaking with Canon We have isolated it down to an AF function/modification. It doesn't seem to be a custom function change.

I tend to use case 1 and case 4 and modify case 4 (all sliders moved to the very left) - now I can't seem to figure out what combination of changes make the AF balls up. I had everything set as I like it last night but the second i changed over rotation to computer only (as i tend to shoot portrait mode) the af started to play up. Undoing the rotation change did not fix the issue. Had to reset to a working backup.

If I leave the af setting as stock default everything works properly.

And as it has always been this only shows up in low light Servo.

If anyone is interested I can load a broken config they can play around with and see if they can work it out.

It's a little frustrating as I don't know what I am changing that's causing the AF to bug out. As proved to me when I was shooting with canon in and underground car park the 1DX could lock onto a black car moving at 20+ km/hr in next to no light and get a ridiculously sharp image.

Canon is working on it, as am I - keep keep this updated.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok so for all those not wanting to read everything here is the conclusion:

Sat with Canon Australia Pro Support this afternoon - which they came to my work after My work hours, sat down for a coffee, gave me a few tips and fixed my problem - I really could not ask for more support from any company! And remember they are from a completely different state then I!!!

Anyways after being schooled on some af config case tweaks we took the cameras into an underground carpark probably a good -1 to -2ev at least.

They tested their camera no issue - passed it to me and it blew me way snap bang locked no issues. They grabbed mine and it went ass up - they couldn't believe it.

Went through all the settings and couldn't work out what it is. So we copied the working 1Dx's config on a memory card and loaded it on mine and it's like a brand new camera - it's like night vision tbh.

So yeah if you are having issues as per below - grab this config file: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/33440790/DXSave/WORRKSSS.CSD and load it.

Canon will get back to me as we are unsure if its something funky in the settings or setting screwed up something in servo logic. Either-way I will update this as soon as I am made aware.

Thank You Canon Australia for taking care of Me :)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not looking to bag out the DX - actually looking for help from other owners and or Photographers that can explain this phenomenon:

--

Issue: Low light Ai Servo mis-focus/no-focus
Full-size images here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/33440790/weirdservo.zip (65MB)

--
1 body – 1DX
3 Lenses – ef50 f1.4, 24-105 F4 L, 70-200 f2.8 II
Shot in Jpeg – all options on (ALO, NR, Lens Correction etc…) and then all options off.
All handheld (no tripod av)
--

I’ll preface this with; on the night prior I was out shooting under moonlight – without any notable issues – with, of all lenses - the ef 50 f1.4 (which if you know and love the lens, you know it hunts focus in low light). With my short time with the 1DX , my impressions of the 1DX’s AF is that it snaps to focus on objects You cannot physically see and locks on with near-possessed speed.

Now last night I found this issue when trying to track my cousins head/face moving through the house. It wasn’t particularly dark 3 room lights registered iso 1600-3200 f2.8 can’t remember the shutter speed. She got sick of being target practise so I turned to my dog. The 1DX wouldn’t grab focus either.

By this I mean it racks the lens to infinity and stops or just stops AFTER it’s visibly passes focus. Not and MFD issue either – after a slight mini panic attack, I swapped over lenses and same issue, swapped to the prime and exact same issue. Thought it was the changes I made to case 4 so swapped it to a default case 1 – same issue. I haven’t played around with 1st and 2nd frame preference but I then swapped it to focus preference and still no change.

Intrigued from my experiences the night before I swapped it to [One Shot] and it focused and locked on with possessed speed once again. Swap back to [Ai Servo] and it racks to infinity/racks past.

--

So in the original room there were too many variables of people moving through the house changing the light so I setup a pretty average testing area:

AJ3P3847s.jpg

This was [One shot] 24-105 at f4@24mm, 1/40, iso 25600
AJ3P3846s.jpg

This was [Ai Servo] – same settings. Just failed to focus.

--

Shot from the other side of the room:

AJ3P3841s.jpg

This was [One shot] 24-105 at f4@105mm, 1/25, iso 25600
AJ3P3840s.jpg

This was [Ai Servo] – same settings. Just failed to focus.

--

So then I thought let’s bring in 3 times more light (even with the f4/5.6 crosstypes more light can’t be a bad thing)
AJ3P3821s.jpg

This was [One shot] EF 50 f1.4 at f1.4@1/40, iso 3200 (bottom af point from memory)
AJ3P3819s.jpg

This was [Ai Servo] – same settings. Just failed to focus. (iso 4000)

--

So finally I thought it was a contrast issue – so added more contrast:
AJ3P3835s.jpg

This was [One shot] EF 50 f1.4 at f2 @1/40, iso 6400
AJ3P3837s.jpg

This was [Ai Servo] – same settings. Just failed to focus

--

I thought the Servo using ITR then needed more light so turned off ITR and it had the same issue.

I’m out of ideas for explaining this one.

Please note: I shot and tried all AF modes to acquire lock via [Ai Servo]. [One Shot] locked on with any AF mode selected.
