5D Mark II with my 3 lenses question

I want to go full frame sometime this year and it looks like I’ll be going for the 5D Mark II because of the price. I currently have 3 lenses, 17-40mm f/4 L, 70-200mm f/4 L and 50mm f/1.8. I was wondering if anybody has had experience in using these lenses on the 5D Mark II and has anyone used the 17-40mm as a general purpose lens? I would rather get something like the 24-70mm or 24-105mm as a general purpose lens, but because of a tight budget, for now I will have to stick with the 3 lenses I have.

Thanks very much!

Why so many different camera bodies?

A wide range of lenses has to be a good thing and is often stated as the reason for sticking with Canon when other manufacturers come up with a cutting edge camera body. However, it's not so obvious to me why Canon needs such a wide range of camera bodies. I'm guessing its purely a marketing thing i.e. keeping sales going by always having something new and 'better' to offer. I also understand having similar bodies, some with crippled features at lower price points to maximise market share. Are these the sole reasons for the bewildering array of Canon camera bodies on the market at any one time or have I missed something?

Ultra wide lens for APS-H sensor cameras

Judging by the last rumors 7D2 will have a APS-H sensor, many of the forum users complains about no ultra wide EF lens. So... the Poll question is:

You need a wider lens than EF 16-35mm/17-40mm for a APS-H sensor sports/wildlife dedicated camera?

What is the Basis of your opinion of APS-H?

Be honest, pretty simple question, Is your opinion based on personal experience?

  • Yes I like APS-H - I currently or have previously shot with these sensors

  • Yes I like APS-H - I have never used a camera with one of these sensors

    Votes: 9 50.0%
  • No I hate APS-H - I currently or have previously shot with these sensors

  • No I hate APS-H - I have never used a camera with one of these sensors

    Votes: 3 16.7%

I'm genuinely interested to find out how many people that hate APS-H have actually used a camera with it or if it's just opinion based on specs and theory. Be honest people. I resisted the urge to put lots of sarcastic silly options in there these 4 options cover every one with an opinion of the sensor format

Need sharp wide-open

I am having a challenge finding a lens in the 24-35 mm range that is sharp at its widest aperture. I have a 60D and a 7D and I am looking for a lens for capturing family and friends indoors in both still and video. I am not having any luck. I have FoCal software so have been able to analyze lenses with it to confirm best aperture. I had hopes for the new pancake but, despite all the wonderfully sharp images being posted at f/2.8, the copy I had was optimal at f/4.5-5.6. Today, I just tried the new 24mm f/2.8 IS, and it is quite soft at 2.8 and FoCal is recommending 4.0-5.6 for sharpness which matches what I was seeing in my images. So this too shall go back to the store. Am I asking for something that does not exist? Is there not a fast prime that is sharp at its widest aperture? One of my other problems is that I don't have the steadiest of hands, so I think I really need image stabilization for spontaneous handheld people shooting.

The prosumer market up next?

Now that Canon has addressed the “professional” space with the 5D Mark III, 1D X & 1D C (Yes, I know some want the big megapixel camera), it could be time to turn our attention to the “prosumer” space. We keep hearing bits of information about what’s planned for the segment in the coming months.

The 70D

The latest I have heard, and spoken about before, is that we’ll see the 70D move up the line. It’ll be specced close to the current 7D, however with a new higher megapixel APS-C sensor.

The 7D X

The rumor that won’t go away is that the APS-H sensor will return to the Canon lineup and fit between the 70D and 5D Mark III. Is it really possible? Maybe. I don’t think Canon needs more APS-C cameras beyond the Rebel, a 70D and possibly a mirrorless entry.

Join Forces and Influence Canon to Improve Products

Can we canonrumors fans join forces and lobby Canon to improve their products? I want to!
My top item that needs changing:
- The utterly useless and unnecessary Macro setting on all PowerShot models. There is NO reason why they cannot simply make this continuous focus. How many times have you framed up a cool shot only to get the yellow "cannot focus" box? By the time you switch over to macro the shot is frequently gone. This feature is unquestionably the most annoying on the G1 X - but it's on all PowerShots and is completely UNnecessary.

Film Camera & Film Recommendations

As the title says, I am looking for a film camera suggestions. I would like a Canon and one that works with my current EF lenses (50mm 1.8 and a few others). I'm not sure what my budget is. I know there is the 1V that I could find used for a decent price, but what do you guys recommend....

My first SLR was a Rebel T3i so i am not familiar with film based camera, however I would like to learn. I know there are things that film can do that digital still cannot.

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to everyone's perspective on a good Canon Film Camera and their film of choice :)

Hoping Sigma can make a 35L alternative

Ok, so i can't afford the 35L @ $1479 USD, and the 35mm F2.0 is not really what i am looking for.

I hope Sigma can make a 35mm F1.4 HSM just like the 50mm & 85mm, and have it price between the two.

I am sure this lens would sell well for Nikon and Sony mount as well, since the Nikkor 35mm F1.4 is ~$1650 and the Sony G 35mm is ~$1500

anybody else want the same thing?

Is SLR dead?

I have been a SLR/DSLR user since 1990s, my first cameras include Nikon N90s and FE-2. About 3 years ago I switched to Canon EOS-5D and then the Mark II.

Recently I bought a Nikon J1 for wife and decided to give it a try on my vacation to China. This is pretty much the first vacation I didn't bring a SLR/DSLR along with me. Very happy with the J1, appreciate the size/weight, especially when climbing mountains. With a 10-30mm plus a DX 70-210 I got 27-560mm coverage, plus excellent video -- all in a ridiculously small package. And the price? $400 for the body plus 10-30, $200 for an adapter(which sucks!) and $150 for the 70-210mm, total $750. My Mark II body alone cost me $2000.

This makes me wonder, is SLR heading to tomb? If you compare the testing result on dpreview, under low ISO it's hard to tell the difference between a full frame DSLR and a mirrorless. Although DSLR still have clear advantage on high ISO, I am afraid it's only time that technology will catch up and the gap will shrink(Don't think technology will eliminate the difference completely, but may make is smaller).

DSLR will always be appreciated by pros, that for sure. But for everyday amateur users, it doesn't seem to make sense to pay so much more money and carry so much weight for only limited advantage?

Just some thoughts, I am keeping my Mark II. :)

60D custom video settings?

Hi,

Thinking about getting the 60D as a second body to my 5DII. But I'm having 2nd thoughts because I've read that you can't save your custom picture settings such as Neutral profile to video...that once you switch to Video mode it's not at all like the 5D or 7D where you can just call up your Custom settings.

Is there a way around this? Or do you have to set it up and customize it (sharpness, contrast) every time you power up or switch to Video mode?

Thanks!

Scratches on front element of G11 - caused by lens cover?

A while ago I noticed some scratches on the front element of my G11's lens, which seem to be getting progressively worse. It would appear that the lens cover/shutter blades which close when the camera is switched off may be causing this.

I have seen a number of discussions on Flickr and other forums to the effect that the lens cover/shutter is causing this.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, have you approached Canon about this, and what was their reaction?

T4i Touch Screen Review

Hey Everyone- Just posted my review on the Canon T4i's Touch Screen Monitor. Its just a quick run through of all the neat things you can do with it. I would be willing to bet we will be seeing the touchscreen on most of Canon's DSLRs in the future, its a really, REALLY nice addition.

When the 5Diii came out, I was a little irked that the zoom button was moved. I don't even look for the zoom button now, I want to play with that monitor.

Enjoy!

Nikon 500mm f/8 Reflex

I picked up a Nikon 500mm f/8 Mirror lens locally for $80, and finally found time to mount it on my 1D MK IV today. I am really challenged when it comes to manual focusing, my old eyes are not that sharp. I had to fool with the exposure, and when I finally got it right, I put the camera into live view so I could use the magnifer to focus, and the exposure was 3 stops off.
For those who don't know, this breed of mirror lens has a fixed f/8 aperture, and are manual focus. As long as a adapter exists, they work equally well (or equally poorly) on all bodies.

After getting exposure set once again, I was able to get a couple of in-focus shots. Its pretty frustrating to use.
As expected, its reasonably sharp, and for a 500mm lens that only cost $80, its a steal. The sharpness is not going to blow you away, the birds were near MFD, so the depth of field is a bit shallow. The awful bokeh was a given, but those out of focus highlights were worse than I expected, when compared to a Sigma 600mm mirror lens that I had a few years back.
Still, for those who can't afford a real 500mm lens, a mirror lens is a cheap alternative. I should go out and try my 100-400mm l on the same basic shots and crop, but I know it would win. It cost 20 times as much, so it should be better!

Track Meet Photo Review with 1D Mark IV

So I was at a track meet and was positioned quite a ways from the track area. I had a 300mm f/4L lens and a 1D Mark IV. This event was nearing full dusk, so the ISO was at 1600 I believe in both cases and aperture was turned up to f/5.6. Normally for these shots I like f/11 because I like more of the background in focus than what I got, but I already had the shutter speed down to 1/400s. I did very little in processing, but I did a fairly large crop. I wanted to point this out because the resolution is awesome despite such a large crop. At the time I wasn't convinced I should really go higher ISO with the 1D4, but I guess looking at the photos now, should I have gone 1/500, higher ISO, and narrower aperture? The shot from way across the track was fairly difficult from where I was but upon cropping, looked okay, minus the fans in the background, which I didn't really like how it turned out. Thanks. P.S. If you open the photos themselves you get a full view. Thanks. Edit: I'd like some help here from you guys. You know I'd help you if I could :)
