I have been doing weddings for just over a year now and use and love my 7D, EXCEPT in low light. I'm not completely satisfied with the IQ of the 7D because I'm a pixel-peeper and hate noise. I also find it not quite as sharp, even at iso 100, as I would like it to be. Like many have said before, if it were a FF camera, it would be the perfect camera. The recent rumors make it seem as if the new 5DMKIII will be just that, a full frame 7D. However, I can't base my decisions on rumors. :)

I am looking at going full frame and gain a bit better low light performance as well as sharper images overall. I have the 7D and use a tamron 17-50 2.8 lens and love it. I also have the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS lens. I will sell all of the above to make my purchase. I figure I can buy the 70-200 again in the future and a 24-70 ish zoom would be a must for weddings.

Let me know you 2 cents. Thanks.

Now I started to wonder. What do you think this "aaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!" signifies?

IS vs IQ

I use the following lenses with IS: 300, 600, 70-200, 24-105. The quality of the photos is super even when the IS is on. So am wondering why many believe that IS on a lens reduces picture quality??
Asking because the new 24-70 is without IS and so is my compact Fuji X100.
Thx for any thoughts.

70-200 2.8 is II - HELP

Hi All,

I had a little accident with my 70-200 2.8 is II lens. Simply fell out from backpack (height about 10cm, really nothing I thought) and the alloy mount hit the floor. I shot a few pics - everything was fine.

Couple days later lens produced errors with the body. Polish Canon service replaced the appreture and fixed the problem. However, after the lens returned home it prooved not to be sharp any more. No AF adjustments could solve anything, because the sharpest pictures (focused manually on Liveview with 10x zoom) were still soft.

I sent the lens back to the service, included the test shots with descriptions, as well as my body (canon 7D) to be sure they check they work together. After two weeks got the lens back with the suggestion, that they could replace USM, because it sounds like it "perhaps soon could be broken" (noisy to them - completely silent to me and other guys I asked). But otherwise the lens is optically perfect.

The results are shown on these crops (comparing to two other 2.8 lenses I have, of which this one was similar, if not the best, regarding sharpeness):

i-C2ZmLk2-X3.jpg

(different focal lengths, so different camera positions to fill the frame exactly the same. Crops from the center of the frame. All pictures f/2.8, on a tripod, mirror locked, remote release)

I am actually looking for other repair service (preferably in Europe because of shipping costs) capable of saving my lens... Polish Canon service e-csi.pl proved to be the opposite...

Any tips and recommendations are extremely welcome!

Best regards, from Poland

Hadam

aaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!

Tons of information coming in about possibly the most anticipated camera of 2012 (sorry Nikon).

Announcement date of February 28, 2012?

I have received lots of emails saying that’ll be the announcement date. I cannot confirm it to 100% certainty, so for now it’s just a guess.

Specs?

All the same specs are coming in. 22mp, 61pt af, 6.9fps. It could definitely take the spot of the 7D, if the previous rumor is true.

Shipping?

Late March or early April is the mentioned ship times for the camera. If this is true, there should be real solid leaks coming soon.

Where’s my megapixels?

A lot of people are wondering why 22mp is it, especially after Nikon announced their 36mp D800 last week. Canon’s Masaya Maeda had some interesting things to say about a large megapixel body.

…Regarding how Canon responds to the competition from Nikon’s D800 and the concern of the successor of 5D Mark II, Maeda indicates that although he cannot leak information about un-announced product, the way Canon develops new product is to satisfy the needs of professional photographers. For instance, the introduction of EOS-1D X is to satisfy professional photographers to photoshoot sports events like the Olympics, in terms of their requirement of high FPS and high image quality under high ISO settings. If Canon thinks the market wants the high resolution models such as the 30 MP of Nikon’s D800, they can easily develop such products…

The bolded part of the above quote basically translates to, “we have one, give us a bit to tear a D800 apart and make sure ours is better”.

I still want a 5D2!

There has also been a few suggestions that the 5D Mark II could remain current, even after a perceived replacement is announced.

cr

The year of the lens?

We mentioned previously Canon may have a “record year” for lens announcements in 2012. Below are more suggestions and info about new lenses.

EF 35 f/1.4L II

Suggested announcement in April/May 2012. Expect the cost to be high.

EF 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS

300 f/4L IS

400 f/4L IS

Suggested announcement in the fall. Perhaps showing for Photokina? A replacement to the EF 400 f/5.6 could realistically come in the shape of a new, and much better EF 100-400L IS. A 400 f/4L IS could fit nicely between the 100-400 and 200-400 (which is going to be very expensive). The built in teleconverter on the 200-400 is going to be a big feature to a lot of photographers and will help justify the cost. I don’t think the 300 f/4L IS needs replacement, but it may be a matter of easy manufacturing to do a 300 and 400 at the same time.

EF135 f/1.8 IS

It was suggested that this lens exists, but has been “shelved” for the time being. This seems odd considering the new EF 24-70 f/2.8L II didn’t get IS.

2013

The new lens madness may continue into 2013.

This is a first

I received a suggestion that Canon will not be making a sequel to the 7D. In other words, no 7D Mark II. The 60D replacement (70D?) will move back up to its previous position in the lineup. Does that mean the end of the 60D “super rebel” style camera as well?

I’d like to see a higher end rebel retain the scroll wheel. I also think the “Rebel” name alone may add to the sales count better than “60D”.

No timetable was given for an announcement.

Lens for Norway

Hey there,

I am going on a cross-country skiing expedition to Norway this easter and need the availability of one, allround lens - preferably something with a reasonable short end, but a pretty large long end as well. Needs to be relatively light (so no f2.8 70-20mm IS II please) as i will be carrying everything in a rucksack. Also, the lens should be able to cope with some pretty cold weather, as norway, is norway, and no doubt it will be pretty freakin' cold.

Am stuck myself, on what lens, but perhaps you can help?

Which lenses for travel kit?

I am new to the forum, but from what I have read there is a great volume of knowledge and experience here. I am seeking advice on what other forum members find to be a great travel kit. I am an amateur, and a variety of subjects interest me including sports, wildlife, street photography, landscape, macro, etc. When I am shooting locally, I can choose the right lens for the job. When I am traveling, I compromise for weight and space. I have taken several trips with the Tamron 18-270mm F3.5-6.3 Di II VC lens as a do everything with one lens solution. This lens has some good features including great focal range, effective VC, good maximum magnification, and small size. However, limitations with overall IQ and focus speed have been more important as I have upgraded my camera from a Rebel XT (8 megapixel) to a 60D (18 megapixel). I also now own more high quality Canon lenses that put the Tamron to shame. I am looking for relatively light and compact multi-lens solutions that will improve the IQ and/or versatility of my travel photography kit.

My style of travel includes both travel to cities and outdoor/hiking/adventure trips with lots of wildlife. I usually fly. For trips under 1 week, I prefer to travel carry-on only so space is at a premium. Comments on bodies, lenses, bags, and other gear are all welcome. Upcoming trips will include Washington DC, Chicago, IL, and Ashville, NC. Comments on interesting photographic opportunities in those areas are also appreciated.

Thanks
Paul

Canon PowerShot G1 X Review

Full review from Engadget

The folks at Engadget have posted their full review of the Canon PowerShot G1 X. For the most part they are quite happy with it, although there are a few issues they have with the camera, like the weak battery life.

Wrap-Up From Engadget

If you demand that an $800 camera contributes to your photography with “extras” like high ISO, interchangeable lenses or exceptional macro prowess, then the G1 X has rivals that are perhaps more worthy of your consideration. However, having used the G1 X heavily for a few days, we can look past its weaknesses — even its underwhleming battery life and uninformative OVF — and admit we’ve become quite attached to it. Our affection has everything to do with the large sensor, fast lens and the overall physicality of the camera — its design, feel, and the accessibility of its controls. If you want a tool for capturing high-impact images, and not necessarily for adding impact to your images, then the G1 X ought to suit you fine.

Is it worth waiting for an upgrade to 24-105?

I'm currently using 550D + Sigma 17-70 OS, but I plan to move to a FF body sooner or later (most likely I'll grab 5dmkII when mkIII gets released), and that's why I want to buy 24-105 now and use it on my cropped camera (as far as I know it's pretty good for APS-C cameras), but the lens is 4 years old and has some drawbacks, e.g. pretty pronounced distorsion at 24mm. So is it worth waiting to get it, or I'd better buy it now and save money for an FF body?

Focusing Screen

After a restless night today was much better. I accidently got the focusscreen out of my Canon 5D mark II, and I was under the impression that I had destroyed my camera. I went to the photostore as they opened this morning, and they replaced it for me after I bought a new one and now my camera works perfect again. They did not have the standard that is delivered with the camera, but I got a type called EG - D, which has a grid design, and I love it (being into architecture and other motives where its helpful with the lines and cross).

As I was getting the focus screen on the shelf in the store, I saw that they had a type for manual shooting with split screen. This appealed to me, since I also have a 17mm TS lens, and I am seriously thinking about getting the MP-E65.

Finally a question arises: Would a split screen focus screen be ideal? Would it not be the best of two worlds, or would the split screen focus screen interfere somehow/distort regular AF shots?

*UPDATE 2*

Hoax, misprint or other. The ISBN resolves to a 5D Mark II book by the same author. 5D Mark III and 5D Mark II on Amazon France. The 5D3 book is showing up across lots of book selling sites. Could be a placeholder, could be someone having fun.

Thanks to everyone that wrote in about it.

*UPDATE*

It has also shown up at Chapters in Canada. (thanks terry)

From Amazon France

A new book dedicated to a 5D Mark III has appeared on the Amazon.fr web site. The release date for the book is March 9, 2012. The book apparently comes from Pearson, which is pretty reputable. The author has done books for the 60D and 7D as well as others. Books appearing on Amazon before a camera announcement does happen from time to time.

5D Mark III/X Announcement date?

The last announcement date I received about the next 5D, was March 2, 2012. That’s a Friday, which is unusual, but not unique.

However, there is no date that I am 100% confident of.

Using the Built-in Flash

Long time reader, first time poster.

So I've pretty much resolved that the built-in flash on my 450D should not be used and have accordingly bought some fast primes for low light situations but am still finding times where I need more light to bring down ISO and/or increase shutter speeds. I have the intention of picking up a used speedlite 430ex ii since I think that will give me what I need (HSS would be nice) but I was wondering if in the mean time it would be worthwhile to pick up a diffuser to attach to the built-in flash?

Flash Diffuser Universal Pop-up for Canon EOS 450D 500D 300D 400D DSLR Camera

Universal Pop-up Flash Diffuser for Canon EOS 450D 500D 1000D 550D 600D 1100D

These two for example are very reasonably priced and if they give any sort of usable results, I would consider picking them up, even if just to play around with until I get a dedicated flash. If they're effective, I might even use them in the future when I don't want to carry the flash around.

Would appreciate any thoughts and comments and would love to hear any experiences with people using these types of diffusers with built-in flashes. Thanks!

24-70 too short for full frame?

I already preordered the new 24-70
II and I am really looking forward to replacing my existing 24-70.
I am also waiting for the 1D X. I never owned a full frame camera (I have a 1D IV) so I am concerned about the lens being too "short"...
I find myself having to move too close to the subject most of the time to get a close up.
With a FF the lens is going to be wider and shorter still. I wish they did a 24-105 2.8 instead. That would have been the perfect FF lens.
I also hate the new hood. I keep the hood on the 24-70 on all The time.
First of all it looks great cause you don't see the
Lens extended or retracted. Second, it protects the lens and the mechanism.
When you put the camera down the hood
Acts as support for the lens. Now, with the new hood, if the lens is extended, the pressure Point is on the tip and I believe the "play" will eventually "bend" the lens
Or at least damage the mechanism...
Also these flower type hoods leak light and flare
Like crazy.

1Dx hands review by Ron Martinsen as posted to his blog on February 12

One paragraph in his conclusion says similar things which have been discussed here as well

"Of course one difficult situation Canon has put me in is that they’ve finally built the camera I hoped I was getting when I made the leap to get my 1D Mark III, but they’ve priced it to be as insanely expensive (yet still cheaper than a 1Ds Mark III). I have a fear of ending up with the state-of-the-art promise only to be disappointed with a nightmare performance like I had with the Mark III. Fortunately, I’ve been assured by Canon that I’ll get a better chance early next year to give one of these cameras a test drive to give you my honest opinion on this camera. From everything I’ve seen so far I’m afraid I need to make a lifestyle change so I can start saving for this camera, but I’m also so pleased at what I’m seeing that I might be putting both my 1D Mark IV and 5D Mark II on the market to help pay for it."

Best gift for a photographer [humor]

So continuing humorous posts (after upgrading lens to L with a tape) this is the best gift for a photographer.

Translating from Polish: "What is best gift for a photographer? Good camera? Maybe yes but it's expensive. Today we'll show you how to make by your own an original gift, which will make for sure some fun and surprise each photography lover".

http://www.joemonster.org/art/19364/Swietny_prezent_dla_milosnika_fotografii

1. No, I didn't do it myself.
2. It's probably some Russian artwork (letters on a box).
3. Posted here in Third Party Manufacturers section :)

Explaining Canon's "Pro Level AF"

I've been wondering for a while, and haven't been able to find an understandable explanation - so I'll ask here.
Can anyone explain just how the AF will work for the non-pro bodies?

What I mean is that for the AF points not working above a certain aperture - for example (from memory) - 50D outer AF points only selectable at f/2.8 and below, and the centre point at f/4 and below

So what happens if you go above those apertures? You lose the ability to autofocus? But I'm pretty sure you can still autofocus when stepped down... so just what happens?

:-\

Canon isn't feeling brave now is it?

Im a Canon fanboy all the way but when you have the d800 roaring through
and Sony's new impressive line of dslr's / dslt's.
You start to wonder, where is Canon in all this?
Sony's a77 already has taken a large step in the right direction with its
24mp monster on a big APS-C sensor compared to canons and nikons.
12 fps shots with auto focus, full continuos auto focus, and so many new in-camera
features that its hard to bat an eye at.

Some of us are waiting for the 70d or the possible 7d mark ii, t4i even.
Some are waiting for the 5D Mark ii to go down in price after the Mark iii.
We need something from Canon soon, or I might have to try out a d800 :/
I would be fine with a 70d, but havent heard any spec rumors whatsoever...
seems more like a fairy tale now.
