Had my picture taken with the President today...

So... I had my picture taken with President Obama today (because of this: http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/07/23/president-obama-honors-outstanding-early-career-scientists ) and of course during the whole thing I was watching the White House photographers.

They were all using exclusively Canon gear. Each had a pair of 5D Mark II's. One had a 24-70L on one and a 50mm f/1.4. The other had a 24-70L and it was hard to tell what the other lens was. I think it was an 85mm f/1.2... but it might have been a 50mm f/1.4. I'm not quite sure.

The one that took the group photo was using a Pocket Wizard to set off two extremely powerful strobes that were pointed directly up (to bounce off the wall and ceiling in front of the group). They used the 24-70L to take the group shot.

It was pretty cool to watch them work... definitely professional work ethic... they followed the president around smoothly, not getting in his way while he worked through the room talking to people.

I haven't seen the photos yet, I'll post back with them when / if I ever get my hands on them. I don't know what kind of resolution to expect though ;-)

Buy 7D now or wait for 7D mark ii?

I am a short filmmaker and sports photographer looking for a new DSLR. The 7D is obviously the perfect choice, 8fps, great video, super fast auto focus. I can buy the 7D right now for 1,300 in a package that includes x2 Batteries, Charger, Case, Memory Card, Memory Card Wallet, HDMI Cable, Table Tripod, Full Size Tripod, Monopod, USB Card Reader, Dust Blower, Cleaning Kit, and the 7D body only. But it would it be smarter to wait for a maybe 7D mark ii? I DO NOT want full frame as I plan to use this for sports and want the extra reach. That package has a limited supply left. Thank You!

Reverse Engineer this please

Hi guys, Im having trouble taking my portraits to a level im happy about. Could someone explain to me how these were done, the first link being my faveourite. Has he used flash? If so would he have used an ND filter for shallow DOF?

Also if you look through his 'Strangers' Collection here im impressed with most of the light. Quite soft. I cant avoid worse shadows and hot spots when i try. Maybe im not post processing enough?

Some thoughts on this would be excellent.

1DX or 1D4

Hi Everyone

I just want to hear an opinion from the forum readers, before I decided to buy which camera. Currently I am looking to buy the 1D bodies, I shoot birds, wildlife & landscape and I am not a wedding photographer.

I like the 1D4 because it offers good AF, reasonable ISO and autofocus available at f/8 and I don't mind getting a used body (it's cheaper). On the other hand the 1DX a new AF (autofocus only up to f/5.6) and ok I admit I like the new feature such as built in HDR for my landscape and multiple exposure (something interesting), but it's pricey.

So, in your opinion which one is better to get the 1DX or 1D4?

Thanks

Is this a good time to buy 1D X?

Hi guys, I have the option to buy tomorrow the 1D X, serial number starting with 05.... I am not a professional, just a very enthusiastic amateur (I currently own the 5D II, plus 6 zoom and prime lenses). I have read about the err80 issue, and another one with the servo focusing over 10 fps. Do you think that both of these problems are firmware related, or hardware? I live in Greece, and it's probably impossible to have exchanged if is found faulty. Theoretically, I can wait to buy a bit later, but of course it's very difficult to wait... What would you advise? Warm thanks.

New 50mm f/1.2 L ?

I was going through my mail in Gmail, when I noticed an advert from Canon (attached a cropped screengrab below), it reads:

"Canon EF Lenses Range - www.canon.co.uk/ - Expand your Creativity with our new EF 50mm f/1.2L USM lens."

The link goes to: http://www.canon.co.uk/EFLenses/?WT.mc_id=147EFLens982Goo_010312&WT.srch=1

It intimates that there is a "new" version of this lens, but this could be a typo or some sort of mistake -- or there is a new 50mm f/1.2 on the way...

The 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4X

Lots of the new Canon 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x lenses on loan at the London games. I’ve spoken to a few photographers that have used it and I have yet to hear a single negative comment. That could change once they hear the price when it comes time to buy one. :)

I’ve heard the same stuff we hear about the new super telephoto lenses. It’s fast, light, well balanced and pretty creative in its design with the 1.4x teleconverter built in.

A great Canon EF 600 f/4L IS II field review

Arash Hazeghi has posted a review on his blog for the new EF 600 f/4L IS II super telephoto lens. It’s a terrific review with wonderful photographs, much better than the one we did ever so quickly. If you’re into bird photography, definitely check this review out.

Conclusion

….Especially given the fact that the EF 600mm f/4L IS II is the sharpest, fastest and lightest 600mm super-telephoto lens currently on the market that eclipses the competition. At the end of the day, value for money is a relative figure. For handhold photographers who desire to produce top notch flight images, the EF 600mm f/4L IS II can significantly increase field productivity making it the best option on the market for this group of photographers. After spending just two weeks with the lens, I can state with confidence that the EF 600mm f/4L IS II is the most impressive product from Canon I have used to date and I am not easy to impress, therefore, highly recommended!

Help with 1D X serial number

I have just received a call by my dealer, and informed me that he has just received his first 1D X (I am based in Europe) and my name is the first on his list! I am super excited about it, but before i get it tomorrow I would like to double check that it is one of the most recently produced bodies. I have the 12 digit serial number. Can I draw a conclusion by this? Warm thanks for your help!

Viewfinder vs LiveView on Manual Focus Lenses

Hi All,

This is my first 'test' and first post, so be gentle. ha!

Using 5D3 with Zeiss 85mm 1.4 at f8.0. Model: 'Bambi'..... (not her real name....)

Comparing manually focused lens through the viewfinder with audible confirmation against using LCD's Live View and magnifying x 10 to hit the focus point.

Conclusions: The viewfinder focusing was more accurate than Live View as you can see.

I've also compared the IQ of Canon's 85m f1.2L II with Zeiss and found them very close overall but the Zeiss were much richer in color.

Thoughts anyone.

Your Ultimate Gear (wish)list

OK, just for a bit of fun to take our minds of the APS-C disappointment of the EOS-M, and all those "my 1DX/5D3 is borken" threads, what would be your "money no object" kit?

Think about different use scenarios, you get to put One body and One lens into each category:

Street:
For me, it's gotta be a Leica M9 Monochrome with probably a Summilux M 35/1.4.
(Close second would be a 5D3 with the 40mm pancake, I just love that little guy)

Portable Landscaping (like the kind you take on a hike):
Probably a Mamiya 7 II with the 43mm Wideangle lens, and a pocket full of Velvia and Efke R25.
(second place would go to anyone who makes a FF mirrorless. But seeing as this is money-no-object, M9 with Summilux 21/1.4. Or maybe a Hartblei H-Cam with an IQ180/Leaf Credo back, and a TS-E 24mm or 17mm, for the widest shots ever possible...)

The "I've got Bear Grylls as a butler to carry my gear" Landscape kit:
Probably one of those nice Alpa 12 4x5" Large Format cameras, if you can get a Schneider Kreuznach Super Angulon XL 47/5.6 on it (otherwise that lens on whatever Horseman).

(Portable) Wildlife (that you have to carry yourself):
1DX and 200-400 1.4x (money may be no object for this thread, getting canon to release it is another thing).

(Truck-mounted) Wildlife:
Probably 1DX and 600mm f/4 and a handful of teleconverters.

(Studio) Portraits:
I hear good things about the Hassy (Zeiss) 110mm f/2.0 Planar, and/or the Contax 645 (Zeiss) 80mm f/2, either one mounted on a Contax 645 with an 80MP IQ180 or Leaf Credo.

Sports:
1DX with whatever lens length you need, 70-200 f/2.8 IS II, 200-400 1.4x, or a 500/600 f/4

Macro:
I wonder if I could hook up a Better Light 138MP Super 10K Scanning back to an Olympus 20mm or 38mm 4-12x Macro?

OK, that's enough to get started, what's your "ultimate" kit? (and feel free to add in other categories I haven't heard of).

(edit, forgot macro)

5dm2 multicontroller help needed (maybe)

The multi-controller button on my 5d2 seems to act weird - maybe - as I have nothing to compare it to.

Pressing it straight in - to bring up the display screen - sometimes it comes up, sometimes it needs a quick jab, sometimes it needs a long press, and never works unless the camera is first "awake" via the shutter release.

I really don't know the nature of the beast. Can somebody clue me in on this?

It seems to be "not hardware" as once I have the screen up, I can maneuver, choose, alter, save all just fine with the multi-controller. Its only that initial activation of the screen that seems to be weird. Yes... I'm very careful to press directly in, not at an angle...(as in maneuvering).

Thanks in advance!~

Upgrading from 40D, advice

As the title says, I currently have a Canon 40D body that I have been using for quite awhile now, and I am looking to move up to FF.

So I ask your opinion on what you would do.

My current options (reduced via personal preference) are:

5D2 from CLP
5D3 new
Rumored Entry FF

On my own time I am generally shooting landscapes (during light mountaineering (so weather proofing is a factor but have already used the 40D for this..)) and other stills that interest me, but I am often working for media services as well and have really enjoyed the frame rate that the 40D offered for journalism (including covering sports events).

I already own a 16-35 2.8L and 70-200 2.8L, but would use the extra money from my cheaper options to purchase another lens like the 50 1.4 USM which I enjoy using the cheaper version greatly ( 50 1.8 II at work)

I suppose my current plan, since it is the only sensible thing to do, is wait until photokina to see how it affects the full frame market as it could greatly reduce the price of the 5d2, slightly reduce the 5d3, or allow me to purchase a whole new camera line.

P.s. my only worry for getting the 5D2 is the AF (but have seen people saying that it is equivalent to the t2i which I have used my friends and didn't find it a hindrance due to my shooting style)
--So people who have used the 5D2 for some sports, what do you think?

1DX, 1D4, 5D3 outdoor church shots

I did the 1DX, 1D4, and 5D3 shots of a church this evening. I did nothing to the photos except crop to the church, as I was using a tripod. I shot at f/8, 24mm, and used Center Weighted Average on the highlight on the face of the church. The 1D4 I ran out of room, sorry. I took two shots, one at ISO 100, and another as high of an ISO I could go. Note the metering is different, as at ISO 2000, f/8, the 1DX and 5D3 give different shutter speeds to achieve the same exposure.

Canon's list of authorized dealers - how accurate?

I've noticed that some online sellers are calling themselves Canon dealers (or implying that they are) but they aren't on the list that Canon has published here:

http://www.usa.canon.com/CUSA/assets/app/pdf/dealer/CanonAuthorizedDealers.pdf

It makes me wonder if the list is up to date. Just for fun, I have started to look up some of the dealers who are on the list to see if they really exist. I've only done two so far.

I looked up Ruthie's Jewelry and Photography in Oregon. Google shows a business by that name in the high desert town of Burns. No mention of camera sales on their website. Anyone who has been to Burns knows that there isn't a real Canon dealer there, unless they are selling cameras to the cows and antelope.

I also looked up "The Camera Center" in Oregon. There was a business by that name in Roseburg, but their website appears dead.

Let's have some fun and look for more non-dealers on the list. I have a hunch that it hasn't been updated in a while.

On a hot day I left my 5d3 and lens in my car's trunk...any damage?

I forgot that I had left my 5d3 and L lens in my car's trunk for a couple days while the sun was out and the temps were in the 90's. When I opened the trunk, it felt like hot, but not like "inside the car" hot because obviously the trunk is dark.

I tried to simulate the scenario with a thermometer and it said 110. I know that one of the days was close to 100 degrees and sunny, so I'm thinking it might have been 120 or 130 at some point.

I've used the camera since, and the images and performance appear normal. The manual just says avoid high heat....I'm not sure if 125 qualifies as high heat. I know when I lived in the desert for a few years that it's sometime 115 degrees and sunny, which might subject your camera/lens to 130 degrees or more.

Has anybody ever done this? Do I have anything to worry about?

What about the lens, can a lens handle this type of heat?

Pull the trigger on a 60D? Pricing...

Hi everyone,

I just recently sold my T2i and after much thought and reserach have decided the 60D is the right camera for me. I'm a Realtor, and will be using it for home photos, and videos of my clients homes during a listing.

Here's my dilemma. How low will the 60D body only prices get? They're as low as $739.99 body only (from Canon dealers, with warranty, non refurbished). I have been watching them for about a month now, and the price has continued to slowly drop. I'm anticipating a release of a 70D (or whatever they call it) in the near future... I guess my question is this; "how low do you think the pricing will get? What has history dictated, as compared to examples... how much lower will pricing get on old models before and after a new model comes out?"

I realize it's impossible to come up with an exact answer - but does anyone have any input they can share? $739.99 for the body brand new is pretty good... but will it get better???

5DM3 is not doing all I hoped...wanting to upgrade to 1DX

Hey guys, maybe some insight here, maybe a good deal for someone, not sure. I purchased a 5DM3 kit at B&H on March 30, in that time I have been waiting for the mixed accessories to become available, as I typically shoot off a tripod (Using RRS brackets...Not yet available) and use a remote flash (New ST-E3-RT + 600EX's) and have just got to the season where we can do the photography that I purchased the camera for, night time tarpon fishing. We have tested the 5DM3, as it is a marvelous camera for daytime shooting, it is not delivering the results we hoped for, especially in the area of AF and IQ. When shooting at night, ISO is a big factor, and both cameras (based on results I have seen) appear to be the same, but the actual ability for the camera to focus and do it quickly, for what we are shooting, which you have a split second reaction time to capture the moment, is failing. I contacted B&H today, and they were not able to help me, in either a return or exchange, so I am asking here, if anyone has any insight on how I can deal with this (Minus just buying a 1DX on top of what I have already spent). I asked them if they could work with me, as since 3/30 i had spent $23,000 in their shop. They said it had been too long, nothing they could do. I would be more than willing to part with my equipment for a discounted price, so that I can efficiently make the needed upgrade. I am really up against a wall here as I desperately need the right tool for the job. Can anyone shed some light on this doom situation I have? Thanks in advance!
