PocketWizard MiniTT vs Phottix Odin for HSS

The 200th sync speed on the 5D3 is a bit limiting, 300th on the 1D4 is less limiting.
Canon HSS is a godsend but uses battery power like a hungry monster.
I'm running 580EX & 580EXII off Quantum TurboT3 batteries.

So, PocketWizard MiniTT vs Phottix Odin for HSS.
Which one works best for my current 5D3 & 1D4 with 580's?

Thanks in advance.

To macro or not to macro

I've upgraded to a 5dIII, sold my EF-s 60mm macro and now I'm stuck. Do I buy the EF 100mm macro or just use my EF 24-105mm L lens. I used the 60mm for flower photos and portraits. Should I purchase a new macro or just use the EF 24-105mm L? I've used the 24-105 several times for flowers with good results so I'm thinking I should use the money on a different lens. Thoughts?

lens problem

I may or may not have a broken lens.

I used the 100L last night and took a few pictures without any problem. I left the lens on the camera. When I picked up the camera today, I could hear elements in the lens loudly clanking together. I took the lens off of the camera and could see through the back aperture something moving. I mounted the lens back on the camera - after it focused on an object, it took a picture that looks like it focused ok and it is no longer making a clanking sound.

I tried calling Canon Support but they aren't open on Sunday. Is this normal or should I pursue this with Canon Support tomorrow?

Thank you in advance.

Great North Swim, Windermere, English Lake District

The Great North Swim finally got underway today on Windermere after being rained off for two days. I grabbed my 5D mk III and my 7D plus a couple of long lenses: 28 - 300L and Tamron 200 - 500. I haven't gone through the 7D shots yet, but here are some from the 5D:

S100 too small for my hands; upgrading to G1X (new price drop)

So it seems the going price (Amazon sellers at least) is $739 for the G1X. Meanwhile, as much as I absolutely love the S100 it finally slipped out of my hand and cracked the LCD. It still works, and I have some tape on the glass to keep it together, but I've had too many near misses with that camera. I love the size and that I can clip it on my belt, however I find it too easy to drop obviously.

So with the first price drop on the G1X I ordered one. I'm traveling next week and can't take anything bigger.

Smaller pixel means more noise can now be laid to rest!!

So says Professional Photographer in its review of the 36.3 Mp D800.

It says "...performs nearly as well as the...5D Mark III up to ISO 6400 so the idea that a smaller pixel means more noise can now be laid to rest."

The review goes on to say:

"...delivers outstanding results and levels of detail are truly astonishing ....almost as good as medium format...."

"Even the JPEGS are stunning with this camera"

"Highlight detail retained to an extraordinary level"

"The dynamic range is the best on any DSLR..."

Some camera Nikon have here!

Canon have some catching up to do!

What will a mirror less camera offer

I know nothing about mirror less other than the name implies.

I was wondering what they will offer in terms of picture quality or video quality.

Will they be better than the Rebel T4i or fall in between a point and shoot and a Rebel. Or do we need the specs first? I was just wondering what people expect that they may deliver and will a mirror less offer some advantages over the current technology?

Shorty Forty, 24mm & 28mm precursors to mirrorless announcement?

I was thinking about the shorty forty and the earlier announced 24mm and 28mm - this is an odd trio. Among all the super high end lenses they're announcing they come out with these. All three are small, high quality lenses, but are all rather oddballs. Now I ordered a 40mm which is on its way, and am seriously considering a 24mm, just because I really like small, solid primes. However I don't know of Canon ever releasing a pancake before, and the other two outliers, why? DSLR owners are scratching their heads over these lenses. Since they were announced soon before the mirror less, could these be meant as mirror less offerings, with an EF mount mirror less?

Look at it this way, imagine a mirror less with a few zooms, and put in the 24, 28 and 40 mm along side it. Seems to make more sense now. If Canon went this route, it could be their way of getting the P&S crowd to step up into the DSLR and EF lens family. First they get a mirror less with a shorty forty and a zoom, and later they can upgrade to a DSLR body and use their existing lenses.

Tell me I'm wrong or this has been discussed before ...

Gear with a budget

Well. First needs to mention, that I from Europe, but I'm going to participate a Work & Travel program. I will spend 3 months in California, so the chances for a better price is higher than here. I've experience with various of cameras, lenses(from Pentax to Canon, form rebel to 1d mk IV) but being in a budget I'm waiting for some ideas. My expectations is a good IQ system with lowlight, using for portraits, landscapes and events. I'm also interested in video side, shooting some shorts(even mf lenses, audio recording).
Any advice, experience is welcomed.
Ps:Sorry for my english.

Canon 28 1.8

Yesterday I impulse bought a 28 1.8 from B&H. Now I am reading these terrible reviews of this lens, especially photozone.de which gave 2 stars for optical quality. I bought mainly for its f/1.8 and normal view on crop factor. Most reviews points out poor contrast/color, CA, and not being tack sharp from 1.8-2.2. Is this lens that bad? Why would canon sell lens with that many issues at relatively higher price point? Anybody have experience using it? Thanks!

From NL: 3D rumored TBA by spring 2013

Just stumbled upon it...Cheers, Pedro
Keith Cooper writes:
"22nd An interesting comment (thanks) that says that the new higher MP camera will appear a year or so after the 5D3, so next spring is suggested for the launch. The emphasis was on a 'studio' camera to recapture ground from the D800, and that Canon were acknowledging that the 1D X was not it.
Just what defines a studio camera wasn't clear. I also asked if this meant a 'real' 1Ds3 replacement, but was told that if I wanted a 1 series body, then the 1D X was it... not unexpected, but I was perhaps still holding out a glimmer of hope :-)"

Canon Rebel T4i and EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Hybrid AF Video Test

i-SPt6XCV-M.jpg

I finally picked up a Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens to test the Hybrid AF system with my Canon EOS Rebel T4i/650D. I think I set my expectations a little to high but the Hybrid AF system was a disappointment. Fortunately, the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens or "shorty forty" is an affordable, portable and extremely sharp lens with great color.

Check out my Hybrid AF test on my Youtube channel here...

Here is my Hybrid AF and pancake lens evaluation on my PhotoBlog...
