Looking good!

The EOS-1D X is showing up in small numbers in Singapore. I have also heard it will appear in more stores in Asia this week. I have yet to hear anything about USA, Europe or Canada stock allocation.

DSLR itch (60D / D5100 / K-5)

For long I have been wanting to get a DSLR. With a newborn at home, I guess the time has come for me take the dip into world of DSLR's. My requirements are pretty simple, I will be shooting my family both indoors and outdoors. I want my images to be as sharp as possible and with right mix of colours. My DSLR usge will be 85% stills and 15% video. In that 85% for stills, I expect 70% of photography to be done in "Auto" mode (to begin with) and the rest 30% would be experiments done with aim to learn DSLR photography. Budget is $1250 and expect to get the cam within the next month. To start with I'm looking to pair the body with a good walk around lens. Might get a prime lens / tele zoom at a later date and I'd be done with. I have no plans to upgrade the body for next 5 years.

Possible choices I have in mind ...

1. Reburb Canon 60D + Refurb Canon 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 USM
Slickdeals has a coupon code which can be use to get additional 20% off on the marked refurb prices.
For refurbs Canon provides only 90 days warranty, if we purchase the same on AMEX / VISA card do we get additional warranty ? Also can someone shed light on the refurb returns policy.

2. Nikon D5100 + Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX ED (VR)

3. Pentax K-5 + Pentax SMCP-DA 18mm - 135mm f/3.5-5.6 AL (IF) DC WR
This combo exceeds my budget by $200. I have read a lot of good things abt the K-5, but only thing which bothers is the name "Pentax". I'm not aware of their presence and after sales support across the globe.

Thanks in advance.

Can more be done with the way sensors deliver us RAW info?

I'm thinking one likely avenue for future digital camera upgrades is in the way RAW data is captured and/or returned to the user.

For example, as a sensor remains active, light photons hit diodes on the sensor and build up an electrical charge. I wonder if it's possible in the future for the end user of a '1/50 or longer exposure' shot for example to get a series (or matrix) of various images (binary numbers) recorded to the sensor and be able to layer and manipulate each series in the matrix individually.

I could see this allowing us to to visualize the evolution of the captured image as it collects on the sensor, and in editing, allow us to pick and choose the most appropriate selection or combination of selections for any given area of the final image.

I could also see changes in the way RAW data is captured and delivered eventually leading to the ability to set/alter ISO speed after the fact (at least to some degree) in RAW editing.

One other improvement this could lead to potentially, is image stabilization after the shot is taken. I know there are filters that help with this already but I am thinking if it were possible to separate out exposures at various timings of the image capturing process and then layer them in post that this would be an advantage for post image stabilization.

I will admit I know too little about the back end of our current RAW files structure and as well, I know too little about the current processes of exposure on digital imaging sensors, but I know just enough to allow my imagination to run wild, which is why I am posting.

Out and about around Chelsea, London

I was in London yesterday for meetings and a party and I took some time between the meetings and the party to take some photos along the Thames. The weather was pretty good unlike today - pouring down here in the Lake District.

Landscape Shot Question

Hey everyone, I've always wanted to ask this. I do quite a bit of landscape photography. This afternoon, say about 6:15pm in Ohio, it was hazy, hot, and humid (a 3 H's day). I was on top of Mt. Jeez near Lucas, OH and I had my 100-400L lens, with a UV haze filter on, and shot southeast across the landscape at a red barn, at 400mm, f/16, on a tripod. The two shots I took were still incredibly hazy. Normally I just deal with it post-processing but it takes a long time and I'm getting tired of it. Is there something I can do on-camera and while I take the shot? Thanks!

What's a good budget wide-angle lens?

I'm fairly new to DSLR's and I really wanted to get a wide-angle lens of some kind, I am however on a budget and I was looking at the canon 35mm f/2, but I was wondering if anyone can help suggest any other lenses out there worth looking at, whether Canon or an off name brand. I use the T3i w/ a 50mm f/1.8 lens and the 18-55mm kit lens currently if that helps.

Also, does Canon ever plan on maybe updating their 35mm f/2 or something similar like an f/1.8?

is my 5D3 faulty?

Hi Everyone,
I brought my 5D3 back in early March, and the camera has been working fine until now. Last night when I was taking some photos I noticed some orange-ish stains of lines across my photos.
I'm uploading some samples of what I mean where I take a photo of a blank A4 piece of paper at an angle using 50mm f/1.2L lens at f/2.8, 1/640s and iso 5000.
The orangey colour does move and sometimes doesn't even show.
The sample photos were taken in burst mode 6 FPS.

I tried using different f stops and a different lens (16-35mm f/2.8 II) and this fault does seem to appear on the other lens as well.

Does anyone know what is wrong with my camera? Is it that the sensor needs cleaning or is there a serious fault.

I found out there has just been a new updated firmware released for my camera, so I will try the new firmware before I take this to the camera store.

Thank you for your help.

another AF point selecton option I would like in future

It would be nice if in the future a firmware update could add another selection in the selectable AF point area where it allows only 5 AF points to be selected
the center and the 4 outer points closest to the rule of thirds intersections

this would be sweet to make it very speedy to switch AF point, these are the 5 points I use 90% of the time

anyone else see the benefits of this?

5D MarkIII Low ISO performance in shadows

Am I the only one to think that 5d MK3 has very poor performance in shadows, even in low isos like 100 or 200 ? High color noise, weird noise patterns, vertical bands/stripes all without any pushing!!!
Straight out of the box the images look terrible in the shadow areas.
Why is that? I am very disappointed. VERY disappointed ...
Even my poor old 350d did better in that domain...
Is there something wrong with my copy or is it supposed to be like this ?

Selling t3i for mark tw.... d600!?

I have mostly canon gear, love canon glass, and making videos. I do videography as a side job
and was wondering what FF to get? The mark ii is amazing -no 60 fps though and the nikon d600 looks
even better tbh. The 5D mark ii's price range has been all over the map lately and I would like to buy a FF
by the end of July. Question is, Canon 5d mark ii for maybe 1500-1600 used or the new d600 with canon mount?

Thoughts on hand straps?

Just curious about how everyone keeps a hold of their camera. Personally, I've found I love having the hand strap on my camera and just holding it. I like it better than a neck strap since it isn't as obstructive when taking a photo, and for my style of photos, it rarely requires me to have two hands free.

What is your preference? Hand strap? No strap? Neck Strap? Something else? Why?

5D2 RAW "Crosshatch" Banding

I'm wondering if anyone's seen this subtle "crosshatch" style banding on 5D2 RAW files...

EXIF:

5D2
TS-E 24/3.5L II
f/5
1/40
ISO 100
B+W 010 UV Haze Filter

By no means do I feel like I was "pushing" the camera. It was a pretty standard sunset position. This is the first I've seen this on my files, though I haven't shot much at dusk since purchasing the 5D2 a few months ago.

I could actually see the bands even more clearly on the camera LCD. Pushing the exposure up a bit in ACR reveals the pattern.

Full, Crop and Crop+3EV from different part of the image attached.

Understanding the diffrence between FF and EF-S - Question

Can some of the more tech oriented members, please explain in layman's terms, what the difference is between FF and crop lens mounts, advantages and disadvantages of each type of mount, why crops can take EF and FF cannot take EF-S? Thank you. I have heard/read all kinds of partial descriptions, but still don't have a clear picture.
