Chuck Westfall - Canon 1DX in Early April

First post on here, I think I refresh this site a good 10 times a day though! I thought I'd just sign up to chime in, I'm a little shocked at how often I see people asking about if the 1DX is delayed and that more people don't do a bit of research.

I'm guessing we can take Chucks' word that it won't in our hands until April.....

Canon EF-S 15-70 f4 IS - too much too ask?

If this lens was made available with similar build quality to the EF-S 15-85 I would jump on it right away and I suspect a great many other APS-C users would too.

I will be upgrading my 40D in the near future and don't need FF so will be getting the 7D or it's newer incarnation if available by that time (wishful thinking probably). I would really like to see a 15-70 (or there abouts) constant f4 lens developed as a kit lens for a high end APS-C package in the future. Is there any technical reason why this lens could not be achieved? I certainly think there is a place for a 24-105 equivalent for APS-C bodies - it would be a nice compromise between the current 17-55 f2.8 and 15-85 f3.5-5.6.

Anyone else fancy this lens?!!

Just how strong is the Magnesium Alloy construction?

The higher end Canon cameras have bene made using a Magnesium alloy for a while - and its supposed to be pretty strong.

Just how strong is it supposed to be? It won't just crack would it?

I ask coz I uh... had a small accident.... And I'm wondering if its due to just bad luck or there being stress fractures in the body itself before, which helped it just.... uh break off...

Will post a picture for reference later...

The Price of Full Frame

Just read the rumour about the 5 Series split. I was wondering, with the D800 announced and priced ($3-$3,5k body) and Canon bound to respond within this same spec and price range (it seems for both), where does this leave average photographers - whether enthusiast or pure amateur/hobbyist.

I am almost certain there are more casual (even pro's) photographers out there that are PRICE sensitive rather than SPEC sensitive. In the film days, full frame cameras were truly available in all shapes, sizes and prices.

Being a 60D user, I regularly contemplate my upgrade path. The 7D is a very specific cam - well sealed & sports level AF. And FF appears to be that next step in IQ, low noise and DOF control everyone raves about.

What I would like to see is a rebel FF body - Call it a 6D or whatever:
- 1DX Sensor - this will give Canon another body to get volumes up on the sensor
- Upcoming 70D body and Movie features - another re-use
- Current 7D AF - paid off tech

Priced at at under $2k body only. I can then either use F4 "L" zooms or 3rd Party lenses, with a non-L primes for low light (seeing that the new 24-70 is another price shocker).

Outside of 7D users, I guess most APS-C users are also not too heavily invested in glass, and if so, I suppose some of that is crop body specific in any case. So moving to full frame is not really "switching systems" for most APS-C users. So from where I am sitting a low cost FF body might just steal some other brand customer to Canon also.

Yes the 5D mark II will be available soon second hand, but Canon doesn't make any money from that.

Am I really alone in thinking, as a Hobbyist, that a $2k FF body will be awesome and the current Price trend seems ridiculous? Can Canon make money with such a lower priced FF body with parts from the wheely bin, bearing in mind future L lens sales? Will this cannibalize sales of other bodies? Or does every single FF user out there crave for the 36MP 61 AF pt monster at $3,5k body only as rumoured?

When do you expect to see CR3 rated 5D/3D rumors?

I expect to see more solid CR3 rated rumors for the 5D/3D line by...

  • ...end of February 2012 (in time for 25th Anniversary of EOS!)

    Votes: 19 45.2%
  • ...end of May of 2012

    Votes: 11 26.2%
  • ...middle of September (Photokina 2012)

    Votes: 9 21.4%
  • ...Thanksgiving (Christmas Shopping Season 2012)

    Votes: 3 7.1%

Despite the "exciting" statistics being released since the D800 specs and sample photos, they are still only CR1 rated. Do you think we'll start seeing CR3 rated rumors soon, or is there still some time to go, for the 5D or possible 3D?

Best lens for photographing product...

... that is unusual in shape (antique US martial firearms: about five feet in length). Photos are taken from about three feet away. I currently have a T3i with the 18-55mm lens it came with. I am considering the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM Zoom Lens. However, would I be better off with a prime lens and, if so, which one? I am willing to pay a premium for the L-series lens.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

Canon 7D on it's way out?

I called my local camera shop to get pricing and availability on the 7D....they said that they are out of stock and probably not getting any more. This is from a reputable store as well, would definitely patronize them if I can.

Odd I thought since I see it available all over the web. Anyone else run into this lately?

Interesting thought

A split in the 5D line has been rumoured for a while now. This rumor was not submitted to me, instead it was sent to [NL]. It’s consistent with some things I have heard, however take this one with a large grain of salt.

5D X

45MP (With a pixel size similar to the power shot G1X)

61 points AF (Similar to the 1DX but simpler)

3.4 fps, 100-6400 (50-12800)

1 Digic 5+ Digic 4

5D Mark III

22MP

61 points AF (Similar to the 1DX but simpler)

6.9 fps, ISO 100-25600(50-51200)

Can't wait for D20

Our cycling team's spring training trip is at the end of March, which means it precedes the D20 release.

I need (aka want) something that I can just throw in my jersey pocket to have along for the ride. Although I think it would be good to have waterproof/dropproof, is it really necessary? How durable is the S100--would it be at risk in a cycling jersey pocket? What about the D10--is it any good or would it feel pretty outdated? Any other thoughts suggestions?

Which Speedlite

I'm looking to buy a flashgun and have got the choice down to the following;

Canon Speedlite 430EX II
Guide No. 43 (at ISO 100/m)

Nissin SpeedliteDi866 Pro
Guide No. 60 (at ISO 100/m)

Both are very closely priced around £200 which is a good price point for me.

I’d like a fast recycle time. From what I can gather the Canon is around 2.5secs and the Nissin 5.5secs both on full power. To compare like for like would anyone know what the recycle time for the Nissin would be at the equivalent Gn43? as that would be enough for the distances involved where I need it faster.

Looking at all other specs I’m favouring the Nissin but would the Canon being a Canon give better overall integration and ease of use?

Any thoughts/advice most appreciated (inculding any others that you feel are better at around this price)

What's wrong with the microadjustment?!

Hi guys!

I just bought another 5d2 waiting for the 1d X.

Now the 5d I have from before I microadjusted my lenses in 20 minutes and they simply work.

But for the second one I get CONSISTENT results that are WAY different if I focus from infinity down or from MFD and up.

Goes for all lenses. If I go from mfd and up it backfocuses, and if I go from infinity down, it frontfocuses. So if I adjust to make one of the accurate, the other is completely off...

Anyone know about this and how to fix it?

36+ Mp EOS dSLR (rumored): How do existing EF lenses cope?

Valentine's approaching and I'm looking for the perfect match 8) . But there's this matter with resolution :-\ . So, the thing is:

There's a lot of speculation for a new EOS in the region of 36-40Mp. Many are saying improved lenses are required to cope with this resolution. On the other hand most of us are users of exisiting gear, have older generation EF lenses, like for instance the 50/1.4 or the 300/2.8L IS. To be noted after the release of 5D2 notable upgrades to popular lenses like the 24/1.4L II or the 70-200/2.8L IS II took place matching better that camera.

So, can existing lenses take advantage of a leap to a 40 Megapixel sensor resolution? Or do we have to upgrade all our lenses too. I'd wish for a hi-res EOS announcement but if that means lens lag spare me the expense, rather wait for the 5D4 (CR3). As consumer's guide how to tell when a lens (prime/zoom) stretches its limits with sensor resolution before rushing to buy megapixel monsters, does anyone know?

First LensRental Just Arrived

I have an upcoming trip to Savannah, GA and I wanted to try out an "ultra-wide" on my 7D so I dialed up lensrentals.com (seeing as how it's associated with this site and I've had good experiences on here) and ordered up a Canon EFs 10-22.

I just received the lens yesterday and was blown away by how carefully it was packaged and what great condition it's in. I would say it's basically brand new. I don't know what I was expecting... but whatever it was this has beaten them.

The lens itself is great. I'm going to head into the mountains tomorrow to field test it before the Savannah trip... I'll post back if I snag anything good.

Anyway... I just thought that I would post about my (so far) positive experience with LensRentals.com. If any of you guys have been on the fence about using them to try out some gear: I would say go for it!

Look for a post on Saturday with some pics ;-)

What must the Japanese think?

I am a regular here. I have owned and enjoyed both Nikon and Canon systems. I find much of the angry hand wringing and somewhat attacking or threatening posts here somewhat surprising. Canon, like Nikon, is a technology company that is very interested in meeting the needs of photographers. That said, it compete in very varied and complex markets with competitors in many industries (think phones, tablets...) making strides to capture a piece of the picture taking puzzle. The offerings of each of the leaders are mind boggling even if we have no interest in most of their products. Someone must as they keep on being refreshed....

I am also frustrated at times with the selection (it is not perfect for my particular needs and budget) but I can't help but be amazed with what my current Canon equipment can do. I have progressed more in the last 6 years of digital work than in the prior 30 of 35mm and dark room work. We live in a great age of tech progress and Canon has delivered beyond what I could ever have imagined...at least that is my POV.

Are all their products priced fairly. No. Are some of their decisions on not providing hoods and other basics with the cameras and lenses sometimes annoying? Yes. Does it seem they are been cheap and predatory at times. Yup, but other companies then spring up with options. Should some basic capabilities be built into the cameras saving us the money and hassle of carrying another item? Yes. All in all, am I happy with the Canon system? Absolutely, and the feedback I get on my pictures now reinforce it on a regular basis.

I think giving Canon calm and non-threatening feedback (unlike: I am selling all my Canon gear! Goodbye Canon! Hello NIKON! etc.) is something useful for all of us. I have learned a great deal here from experts as to what the future might and should hold as far as potential innovations and features Canon or Nikon could offer. There are many here who better understand both the technical and artistic challenges to guide us and the manufactures to the next great camera and/or lens. Those who post here with positive feedback I'm sure will be more effective in making change. The Japanese with their team and consensus focused culture probably could benefit from what it is written here especially if it is in form that can accept comfortably.

I am now in the market for the replacement of the 7D but I am not hoping to buy any of the very top bodies (EOS-1D X and 5d III) being offered/discussed as I feel I am both not good enough to properly exploit them and I would like to leave some cash aside to travel to the places I plan to photograph. I still like to see what is coming out and imagine a little piece of that technology will move within reach for me in the near future.
