70-200 2.8 II vs. 85mm 1.2 II - general opinion

Hello all,

I want to buy one of these two lenses within the next weeks. Having read all the articels about IQ, autofocus, weight, I don't need any advice like "my lens is sharper" or "the 85mm has a lot more/pleasing bokeh".
These are questions to those who own both lenses: Which one is you favourite for portraits and why? Do you prefer the 85 or the 70-200 when it comes to low light shooting (e.g. portraits in the woods at late afternoon)? What else do you use the two for and which one do you use more often? What makes one of the two lenses more remarkable than the other?

I currently own a 7D with the 15-85, 100L and 70-200 4.0 non IS. I usually use the 100L because of the background blur but find it slightly to long for my purpose. My 70-200 has the obvious zoom range advantage.

EOS 1D X and Lightroom 3.6

Hi

There is a chance that this is a stupid question but here goes. . . .

Can Lightroom 3.6 read 1D X RAW files? At present I have tried updating and installing ACR6.7, but still LR does not support 1D X files. I am reluctant at this stage to move to LR4.1 due to all the presets that I currently have setup in LR3.6. On that note, is there a easy way to transfer presets to LR4.1 from LR3.6.

Thank you and sorry for the blond questions :-[

What CF card for 1D X?

Hi guys,

I need some help or suggestion on CF card. I have finally received 1DX and I need good card or two to go with it. Good = speed and reliability

I will be shooting stills and videos. I understand that if I want to use full potential of this camera I should go for UDMA 7 rated cards.

What would you buy today if you had to pick one card for stills and one for video? Brand, size and why?

Any brand more reliable than other? I know I will spend some money on those card so I want to make informed decision.

Thanks for your help.. Charles

Must-have lenses for Canon 5D Mark III

So I got quite the deal on a brand new 5D Mark III, and I'm looking to buy a few lenses, these are what I had in mind:

  • EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM OR EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM
  • EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
  • EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L

I'm pretty sure I'm going to get the 50 and the 70-200, but I can't decide whether to get the 24-105 or the 24-70 (one of these will be on my camera most of the time). I definitely like the extra focal length and the IS on the 24-105mm. I'm just afraid it will be redundant as it overlaps over the focal length of the 70-200mm. Would I be better off getting the 24-70? Is it sharper? It's definitely faster, but with the incredible ISO-performance on my 5D I'm not really worried about getting into a situation where that will be a problem (if it's a low-light situation I'll be whipping out that nifty fifty anyway).

So, should I get the 24-70mm or the 24-105mm? I would like to hear all your pros and cons.
EDIT: Another possibility is waiting it out for the 24-70 Mk2, I would be willing to do that.

EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM with 1.4 converter or EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM

Planning for a motorbike travel through Vietnam in September I am going through lens options. I've done this and similar travel before but not since I became a more enthusiastic photographer. I will sell some of what I capture together with articles and hopefully some of them on their on merit but most will be for my own use. I moved to 5d MkIII a couple of months ago from 60D so I've lost some reach on what I have today. Except for the old stuff I have a 24-105L that I will bring and I might bring my 35L. I today realized that i have about 1500 USD to spend on extra equipment (apart from stuff I already planned to get like remote trigger, extra batteries etc) which means I started looking at a new zoom. So referring to the subject line, would anyone have any recommendations at which one to get between the 70-300L or the 70-200 f/4 L with 1.4 converter? I am looking at sceneries from mountain jungle where I would need some reach and candid street pictures in villages where people are not used to foreigners taking pictures. Thanks in advance for any input.

upgrading from XSi.. what to choose?

Hi! It's been a while since I've been on canon rumors and didn't keep up with all the new models and stuff. So I need help! =)

I've had my XSi for 3yrs now(first and only DSLR) and while I love everything about it.. I'm having the video itch. A while ago, I planned to upgrade to the 7D once it gets off market so its cheap but then I watched a video of the new mirrorless camera and like how easy it is to focus during video mode and how i just need an adapter to fit all my lenses. It's smaller and cheaper.

I mainly do portraits, wildlife and sports if that helps. I'll still use the XSi for photos if I do get the eos m since i want a viewfinder but then wouldn't the money be better spent for something like the 7d?

ahh can't decide! help!

A Powershot update by September?

'More announcements coming
... expect two more announcements before Photokina begins in September. ... as well as the usual PowerShot upgrades.' (CRF)

Hmm 'the usual Powershot upgrades', I wonder whatever that might mean? The S100 sensor and a Digic 5 processor plus a 24mm to 140mm zoom, in the same G12 body? Or will they try to slim it down a bit, a sort of cross between the S100 and the EOS M keeping the articulated screen but making it touch sensitive to reduce the buttons and dials?

Future of Canon APS-C System - Just entry level?

Hello - I'm new to the forum.
I've been waiting for several years now waiting to upgrade from my trusty XTi - my first DSLR. I'm waiting to see what replaces the 60D / 7D. (better high ISO performance, AF microadjustment, and 5 shot AEB for HDR - please) In the meantime I've saved and got better lenses. I've added a 17-55, 10-22, and 70-300L. Now it seems that we will see a new "entry level full-frame" DSLR soon. That will be great a great camera but 2 of my lenses are incompatible and I certainly can't afford the 1000s of dollars for their FF equivalents. So I probably will have to stay with a crop sensor camera.
While there will obviously still be APS-C cameras in Canon's line-up do any of you think Canon's corporate strategy (making money) will try to force enthusiasts to upgrade (and pay major bucks) to move out of the entry level range of Rebels?
Obviously none of us know but we all like speculation and opinions!

Zeiss 2/25 or 2/35 for everyday use in APS-C?

I'm wondering which of these lenses is the best application for everyday use in Canon 600D?

I love Zeiss lenses and already own 2.8/21, 2/50, and 2/100. I borrowed 1.4/35 about a week, and I didn't like the size, weight, and somehow I can not get sharp focus properly. Just like my old 1.4/85 before I traded it with 2/100. I never use 2/35 or 2/25 at this time.

I read reviews that 2/35 is different from 1.4/35 in several ways (tone, color, bokeh etc)... but can not find comparison between 2/35 and 2/25. Thanks in advance.

Advice before buying used 15-85 EF-S

Hi!

I'm new to DSLR (about 4 months), using 60D, 18-55IS, 50 1.8, 55-250IS. When I bought the camera paying 700-800$ for lens seemed crazy for me (yep, I was young and innocent :) ) so I preferred to start with the much cheaper 18-55 and "upgrade in the future".
Well, the future arrived faster than I thought and I feel 18-55 is not enough any more and I'm stuck with it. I'm thinking to upgrade to 15-85 ( I don't have money for L glass). I've got an offer of 625$ for 1.5 years used 15-85 with original hood, supposed to be in like new shape. New one costs here 790$ w/o the hood and has 1 year warranty.

I'm not fond of buying used things in general but I understand that with lenses it not always a bad idea. I would like to ask an advice from people that have this lens:
Do you think 165$ worth the 1.5 year use (it's from an amateur) or should I buy a new one? How does 15-85 cope with time and use? Or maybe I should buy a new 17-85 for 620$????

As always, Thank You for your help and advice!!!
