Why the hate for video capable DSLRs?

I've been reading on this and other forums for quite a while, and I see a lot of hate coming from photographers who are upset that Canon and other manufacturers are including video capabilities in their DSLR's. I don't get how a camera being capable of recording still images AND video is a bad thing? Does it make you take worse pictures? I own a 40D and a 60D. We have used the video capability of the 60D exactly twice. I'm not a videographer, and I'm not really interested in shooting video. I have no interest in buying a video camera when I almost never shoot video, but I'm glad that I have a camera that's capable of it when I want it.

I'm not an engineer or an expert, but my basic understanding is that the capability to record video is primarily a software thing, and the only extra piece required is a mic or mic input. Magic Lantern software has enabled video on a 50D (albeit without a mic), which supports my understanding that it doesn't require any major changes or extras in the camera. I'm pretty sure that there's thousands of people capturing fantastic images on the 5Dii and other DSLRs that can shoot video. So unless there's something about video capable DSLRs that I'm completely missing, why the hate?

Where is the T4i?

With Sony's a65 and a77 and now Nikons d800, Canon is falling behind a bit.
Sony has been on the battle field for a few months now claiming new territory
in the dslr market.
I dont expect the t4i to combat the d800, but the a65 itself is a worthy opponent.
Im guessing canon is going to try to rival this new foe even though at the consumer
level; the a65 / a77 has auto focus that works itself through video mode wonderfully,
10 fps burst shots, and HDR / panorama built in.
The 24MP ( you can bump it down ) 1080p 60FPS!
So many features that Canon has to try to face up against, for a little bit more than
900$.......... 1070$ with the kit lens.

85mm f1.2 II or 70-200mm f2.8L IS II

i own 5d m2 , 24-70mm f2.8L , and 50mm f1.4 USM. i do some portraits recently and my friend use nikon 85mm f1.4G. i was so amazed with the picture produced by the nikon lens. the bokeh is so creamy compare to my 50mm f1.4. so which one is better in term of bokeh and sharpness at wide open ? the 85mm f1.2 or the 70-200mm since both lens have similar price tag in my country.

Canon 85L vs. 135 L in terms of focal length

I have a question related to different focal lengths and want to decide which one would work better for me.

I'm planning to go full-frame this year and want to have better understanding of the difference between 85mm and 135mm focal lengths for portraits. I love fixed lenses and looked through several sample shots made using both, but there are things that you can't predict by just looking at those pictures. I'm not able to try both by myself, that's why I'm asking for help here.

The only thing that comes to mind is different "compression" you get using different focal length (the more is your focal length the less is the distance between objects).

My main question is "could there be a need to own both?"

I Need a Flash

I was originally planning to just wait until I could afford a 580 flash, but I'm kind of getting desperate without a proper flash. I'd need it mostly for in doors situations (such as inside a horse barn or in my small 1500 square foot house). In the house I'd probably point it at the ceiling to light up the whole room instead of directly at something. I will mostly be using it at night, in rooms that are relatively small (largest one is my loft at 500 square feet). I shoot animals and people.

Should I still wait even though I wanted to to get a new lens, or is there one you guys can recommend to me that's cheaper?

Would we be asking too much?

First off, I'm a photographer! If I wanted to be a videographer, they sell video cameras...

I'm not sure if Canon R&D read these posts, but I'm tired of waiting for the 5D3, I'm on the verge of packing up and heading to camp Nikon. If the 5D3 ever arrives, I don't need video...Canon please just deliver a full frame, moderate megapixels camera with a solid AF and robust ISO.

Perhaps WiFi and GeoTagging, they squeeze that stuff into watches these days, it's not too much to ask.

And keep the price within reach, don't burn us who want one in the first 6 months!!

Don't flame me for being impatient, we're all checking the Rumors page daily...

DR and RAW bit depth on Canon's forthcoming...

With all the details flying around about Canon's forthcoming releases, I'm curious if there has been anything about dynamic range and RAW bit depth for anything announced or rumored? Despite the fact that Canon claims 14-bit capability, they have not seemed to make fully effective use of it so far, with most of their cameras topping out in the 11-12 stops of DR range. Does anyone know what the DR of the 1D X is...will it have a true 14 stops like most of the recent Nikon cameras? Have there been any rumors stating DR for the 5D II successor or this possible new 40mp model?

It would be fundamentally disappointing for Canon to miss the mark AGAIN on dynamic range and keep all their loyal customers bound to an 11.7-stop limit on DR when the competition is blowing that out of the water. Of all the various improvements Canon could make, having thought about it the last few days, I would take a 5D III with the same resolution as its predecessor, same ISO range, and only the 60D's 9-point AF...if I could have better dynamic range. An extra two stops would do more for my landscape photography than anything else...including unbelievably high ISO, the 7D or even 1D X AF, etc. I could stop wasting time setting up and adjusting the single 2-stop GND filter I usually have to use, and just spend my time capturing the beauty before me as-is.

What will the 5D MK III really be?

The rumors for a 5D MK III are, as we know, 22mp or thereabouts. However, I detected some subtle comments (hints) from DPR that it might not be the case. If a announcement is coming up in three weeks, there is a outside chance that they know something.

Here are two statements that have me thinking. I doubt that they are intentionally dropping any hints... Or are they?? Something to consider.

1. From the D800 description.

Nikon's newest DSLR offers a significantly more advanced feature set, including a pixel count of 36.3MP that - for now at least - bests the competition by a comfortable margin, and is comparable only with high-end medium format digital equipment.

2. From the article on the 24-70mm MK II, and the 24 & 28mm Primes.

the most interesting thing about these launches is the fact that Canon feels the need to update various full-frame lenses, almost as if something likely to test the quality of its existing versions was in the offing.

Sigma SD1 relaunching at $2299 (DP Review)

It seemed like just yesterday that the Sigma DP1, the "45MP camera" (15M photosites * 3) without a Bayer pattern or an AA filter, was released at somewhere around $7000. Now Sigma has relaunched it at a much more competitive price, according to DP Review. Are you interested now?

In other news, that new f/0.95 Cosina mount lens for Micro 4/3 looks pretty tempting, and Olympus has released their OM reboot, but with an EVF. Exciting times all around.

24-70mm 2.8L V1 or V2

I have been looking in to buying the canon 24-70 for a few months now. And when I herd about the new one coming out I waited to see what comes out. The new one is a little out of my prise rang right now.

The old one is still a great lens. Will the old one go down in prise any time soon? And is it a good buy even though the new one is out?

Thanks

HELP! NEWBIE LENS ADVICE! 55-250mm, 70-300mm, or ___?

[size=12pt]So I've somewhat recently dived into the world with a Canon 600D + 18mm-55mm IS II.

I want something for extend range. I've narrowed it down to two.
> A bridged gap with the EF-S 55mm-250mm IS II?
> A gap with the EF 70mm-300mm IS USM?
> Or maybe something else, suggestions?

Also any suggestions below the 55mm range?

Any imput will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers! :)

What will the new mk. IV Canon Extenders have

What features should the mk. IV Canon Extenders have

  • Extended barrel so that the protuding rear element does not hit the new lenses

    Votes: 1 25.0%
  • Same barrel, same issue with new internal focussing lenses but better IQ

    Votes: 3 75.0%

This is no rumor on extenders but... what would you like to see?

Some of Canon's new lenses are internal focussing, so that their rear elements move. E.G the 70-300L is not compatible with the 2x 1.4x mk.III's since the rear element comes out a bit and can hit the moving element of the lens that is mounted.

Will Canon fix this and increase extender compatibility? Or will they not increase barrel length since it makes long lenses heavier and longer yet ? I am asking since I want the 2x with my 70-300L, but they are not "compatible" under AF.

What features, if any, made you almost choose...?

Before purchasing your canon dslr of choice, what brands' features tempted you to purchase their camera instead?

Personally, I was really tempted to get a Pentax for the weather sealing, in-camera stabalization and fps/price. Ultimately, I decided I live in a desert and weather sealing might not be most important to me. Plus, I liked the idea of buying used lenses and accessories and Pentax just didn't have as many being sold on CL and Ebay. The 7d was above what I wanted to spend, but I found a "deal" at one of those bait and switch websites. JUST before I paid for it, I read a review about who not to buy from, and it saved me a lot of grief and frustration. But, by then, I had read reviews and my heart was set on the 7d. It had weather sealing, high fps and excellent reviews, even if it was way more than I planned on spending. I have a wonderful wife who saw how much I was depressed that the too good to be true deal was, in fact, not true. She bought me the camera as an engagement present. The addiction for nice camera stuff was on. I'm so lucky to get the right brand from the beginning, but it makes me wonder why Canon only tries to compete with Nikon, and not knock out the niche markets, too.

Was there any features (weather sealing on crop sensor models? In-camera IS model? more fps? mirrorless?) that you would like to see Canon put in a body somewhere along it's line up? Where: FF or crop?
