Which 24-70 to buy for weddings & events?

I'm going to buy a 5d2 camera body next to my good ol' 60d for weddings and need a 24-70 standard zoom for it this application - or else I'd buy a 24-105. kit The question is: Which 24-70, the Tamron, the Canon mk1 or wait for the mk2?

As you see from my camera body choices, I'm on a tighter budget considering *all* things I'll need, so I really have to think about what an investment is worth in relation to return of invest and iq/af differences. Considering the clients I'll be able to acquire at first, they won't care much for iq or high mp prints but more about the picture content ("Am I on some pictures and do I look good on the group shot? Does everyone look happy?").

* Canon 24-70mk1: Good and proven lens with equally good and proven Canon usm af. This is €1800 new, and buying it used isn't that easy because they're not that much cheaper and there are said to be some duds out there. But it has a red ring which might make more of a "pro" impression to some clients?

* Tamon 24-70vc: At only $1000, this is really the lens I'm considering most. I could also dual-use it for a personal walk-around lens due to the IS. The iq is comparable to the Canon mk1 except for the bokeh, but the af is a little slower which might make the decisive difference for lower light run & gun? And is this ok enough for portraits in combination with my 100L?

* Canon 24-70mk2: Obviously not out yet, but at €2000+ this has to be good. But will it be *that* good that it beats the Tamron in combination with a good prime I could get for about the same combined price?

Edit: another advantage of Canon lenses is the cps support. But currently I'd only qualify for "silver" cutting the repair time a to max. 5 days, for the more interesting gold with max. 2 days or loaned equipment I'd need another ff body. And even with Tamron and w/o cps I can loan a lens elsewhere if the chips are down.

1dx Japan site

Today is 20th so I checked Canon Japan website to see if they had updated the release date which earlier was marked for today.

The date has vanished.

I google translated this: "EOS-1D X Niokimashite new product, currently, has received a very large number of orders, the period of time, your time will be charged before delivery of goods. We sincerely apologize to our customers is that the very We apologize for any inconvenience. So we strive to improve this situation as soon as possible, the item can be delivered promptly to our customers, We look forward to your understanding."

Damn. 'Understanding' is becoming tougher at least for me... So wanted it for my 35 days Africa trip... :(

Helsinki Samba Carnival

No place really seemed to fit this, so I put it here in the Portraits section. That's what they basically are...
Gear used. Canon 7D and the magical 70-200 f/2.8L MkII.
The shots are pretty much straight off the camera. It was quite a challenging lighting situation. Bright sunlight with very harsh shadows.

There are more on my flickr-stream if you want to check it out.

Let me know what you think:

Canon Rebel T4i/650D Video Test

i-ggHmHNT-M.jpg

I picked up my Canon Rebel T4i/650D at my local brick and mortar and did a quick video test to evaluate the video quality and the newly fangled touchscreen LCD. I did not have time to try out the new Hybrid AF tracking system because the sun was quickly fading.

The video quality was just as good as the previous T3i. I was hesitant to like the touchscreen at first but it comes handy when choosing and magnifying a focus point quickly. Other than that, the T4i is quite amazing for a Rebel.

You can view my video test on my Youtube channel here...

Canon EOS Rebel T4i Video Test

You can read my brief video evaluation here on my PhotoBlog...

http://www.chadsorianophotoblog.com/...anon-eos-rebel-t4i650d-video-test.html

I also created a modified .plist for the Canon E-1 Movie plugin v1.3 for Final Cut Pro for the Canon Rebel T4i/650D. I attached the .plist to this post for closer viewing and the instructions are listed in my photoblog link above.

Enjoy!

Finding a used 35mm f/1.4L

Is it me, or is it very hard to find a good deal on a used 35mm f/1.4L lens? I'm looking to buy one, but it is so expensive. So I thought I might go the used route, but there isn't much of a discount there.

So, I guess my other question is, what does this say about the greatness of this lens? I'm guessing people who own these lenses don't want to part with them. Am I correct? Should I just bite the bullet and buy it?

  • Poll Poll
Follow-up poll: If you're not buying a 5D3 due to price....

....would you describe yourself as?

  • An APS-C user looking to upgrade to full-frame

    Votes: 30 50.8%
  • A full-frame user that still finds the price too expensive

    Votes: 15 25.4%
  • A multi-sensor (1.6, 1.3, and/or FF) format user that still finds the price too expensive

    Votes: 14 23.7%

This isn't meant to be an poll where the full-frame elitists and APS-C users stricken with an inferiority complex to duke it out. Whether someone is a hobbyists or pro is entirely irrelevant to this poll as well. It just seems like people either really love their 5D3, or are calling bloody murder about the price. I've noticed many of the people that love it were already shooting full-frame, while those discontent about the price are often current APS-C users. My observations could be completely out of line, which is why I'm posting this poll out of curiosity.

Personally, as the owner of a 5D3 that came out of the very first batch, I obviously felt it was worth the price. However, if I were an APS-C user, I completely understand why some people are upset about the price. If that were the case, I'd probably just buy a 5D2, or if I couldn't bear the thought of dealing with such a pathetic AF system and lethargic frame rate, I'd pick up a D600 if it does indeed materialize at the rumored specs and price.

My film shot on 5D is a Semi-Finalist in Ridley Scott/Youtube's filmfest!

I can't believe it, my film "Sold" was chosen as a semi-finalist out of over 15,000 submissions for Ridley Scott's "Your Film Festival"! http://www.voteforsold.com

If my film 'Sold' is voted by the public into the top 10, I'll be flown to Venice, Italy to open the Venice International Film Festival with my film! Even more amazing, if 'Sold' wins, Scott Free Productions will award a $500,000 grant for me to make my dream movie with Ridley Scott! Please help my dreams come true and vote! http://www.voteforsold.com

Sold is about a young journalist who is inadvertently captured into a human trafficking ring while investigating the treatment of undocumented immigrants in America.

This competition is another fascinating look at how Scott Free productions has been able to use Youtube to gain more exposure for filmmakers (the first being that Life in a Day documentary).

This is the link people are using to view the film and vote:
http://www.voteforsold.com
The above link will take someone directly to the film where they can click the red "VOTE" button to the right. Voting ends on July 13th and people are allowed to vote once a day. If you like the film, please help! I can't even imagine how cool it would be to go to Venice Film Festival and open the fest with my short! If you like the film, please vote!

Setting exposure for video...where's the meter?

Hello all,

Maybe I've missed it...but I can't find how to get the exposure meter to show for video, like I can for doing manual stills.

On M for stills, I can set my shutter speed, aperture, ISO....and then if I decide to change one of these, I can then look at the meter, and change one of the other parameters till the exposure meter registers correct.

I can't find a 'live' exposure meter for the video modes on live view....am I missing something here?

I know for cinema look...at 24fps...you want to go with 1/50 shutter speed...and you have aperture and ISO to play with. But how do you know what is properly exposed? I've just been playing with aperture and ISO till the light in the live view looked....well...'about right'.

Can someone help me where I've missed something here?

Thank you in advance,

cayenne

Just a little bit of information out there

There isn’t a lot of technical information floating around about Canon’s mirrorless entry.

We’re getting more and more information that the announcement will be coming sometime in the next 30 days, but no solid date has been nailed down. Original estimates pegged an announcement in June, however Canon announcements move around pretty frequently.

Some technical stuff

We’ve heard only little bits of info about the mirrorless camera. The most notable is mentions that it will use the same sized sensor as the G1 X, and maybe even the exact same sensor. There has been no mention of the mount for the camera, that’s probably the biggest question surrounding it.

We’ve been told it will be launched with 3 lenses, which tells me we’re looking at a new mount. I don’t doubt there will be some way to make the camera compatible with at least EF lenses, and maybe EF-S as well.

It’s also been mentioned on more than one occassion, that this initial mirrorless announcement will be the “consumer” level camera and there are plans for “prosumer” and “professional” models.

I do expect more to come out in the coming weeks.

Ultra-Wide options for APS-C Body

Hey Guys,

I just got word that on my next assignment I may get a fairly unique photographic opportunity that will likely require a wider Field of View than can be accomplished with my 28-135 + 7D combination. I am looking to rent something on the wider end, not a fisheye, and wondered if anyone could offer some suggestions and experiences with the various offerings in this size bracket?

So Far I've come across the EF-S 10-22, the Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 EX, and the Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 DI-II LD.

I'd greatly appreciate y'alls input!

Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM "Pancake"

Well, this has got to be the quickest announcement->lens gallery thread ever, because I know some of you already have one (myself included).
Unfortunately I only bought it this afternoon after work, it's pitch black outside, so I can't show any photos with it (without taking shots of my messy, messy house), so here's some shots of it.

It really is tiny.

Pictured next to:
The similarly-sized Kenko Pro 300 DG 1.4x Teleconverter and 12mm extension tube. (for the record I think the rear element might *just* touch the teleconverter, but i'm not going to try it before I've even used it)
The similarly-priced and focal-length EF 50mm f/1.8 II and Asahi Pentax Takumar 50mm f/1.4.
The nothing-similar EF 70-300L and my 'alternative' street-lens Rokinon/Samyang 35 f/1.4.

Canon 100-400L, Sigma Bigma (50-500), or something else?

Hey All - I'm looking at getting a lens that has a little more reach than my current set (16-28 Rokinon, 24-70 f2.8L, 50 f1.4, 70-200 f4L) and was considering the Canon 100-400L and the latest rev of the Sigma Bigma (50-500). What are your thoughts? Any others I should look at? They're both around the $1600-1700 new range, and I'd like to keep it under $2k. Thanks!
