ND Filter system for landscape photography question

I am looking at getting a filter system for shooting landscapes. I was looking at a Cokin filter holder. I do not know too much about filters to be honest, other then the results look very nice. I was also looking at Singh-Ray ND filters. I was unsure what people recommend. a 4 x 6 or a P series filter?
As well, I heard a good start is to get a 2 stop graduated filter.

Any advice for someone starting out in the filter department?

thanks! :)

EOS-1D X now or wait for 1D neXt?

Is anyone else sitting on fence over the decision to buy the 1D X right now (when available) or wait to see what is coming next? After using my pair of 1D Mk IV bodies for over two-years now, I am debating about the benefits of selling one of them and buying a 1D X. As the 1D4's have met all of my needs; auto racing, landscape, travel, existing light, in other words, just about everything, I am hesitant to make the purchase of a 1D X right now. On the surface, it looks like the 1D X would be a great addition to my bag of tricks...it's just that the 1D4 meets all my current needs and the jury seems to still be out on the yet to be available 1D X. So, maybe it would be better to just wait a little while and see what Canon does next as there seems to be a lot of discussion of just that ? The good news in all of this, is that it has been easy to find prospective buyers for the 1D4, as there is quite the demand for them right now! Makes you wonder why/if Canon is discontinuing the model?

Lens upgrade

I've just taken the plunge and bought a secondhand 24-105L to replace my secondhand 28-135mm. Have I done the right thing? As I'm waiting for the L to arrive at the beginning of the week I'm wondering just how much better is the L than the 28-135? Suppose I'm looking for reassurance really. I've read loads of reviews, forum posts (here and elsewhere) and anything else I could find about both lenses and have come to the conclusion that for 100 posts there will be 100 different opinions! I am most concerned about the upgrade of the optical quality since my camera body isn't weather sealed having a weather sealed lens seems a bit of an unnecessary luxury. I've only tried out the L in Jessops so haven't had much experience of it though everyone raves about it. Replacing the lens with one of similar length seemed the best thing as the 28-135 was a good choice. I don't tend to shoot wide (landscapes etc) so even on a crop body the reach suits me.

I'm selling the old lens on eBay since the local independent camera shop only does secondhand sales at a whopping 25% commission and the photography section on Craigslist doesn't appear to have a lot of activity in this locality.

I just hope I don't regreat spending the extra cash.

Monopod with 3 legs - opinions?

Hi all,

I'll be traveling to Norway in several months, and I travel light. I plan on taking my 5D3 along with my 24-70L I and 24L f/1.4 II. I'd like to do some night / low light shots, so I intend to bring along a tripod or monopod. I found a general-sized tripod (a generic brand I bought at Fry's) to be too cumbersome for someone trying to travel light, yet I like to bring some good photographic equipment and general electronics (laptop, chargers, mp3s, Point and Shoot, etc.). Has anyone used monopods with the 3 legs stand while out on travel? What are your opinions? Reliable except for the most important shoots? Reliable until there are slight wind gusts? Here are two I saw at B&H that I'm considering:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/332749-REG/Manfrotto_682B_Professional_Monopod_Black.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/848843-REG/FEISOL_CM_1473_CM_1473_Rapid_Monopod_With.html

It seems like both will support a 5D3 and 24-70 without falling over.

Thanks,
-Randy

1D Mark IV and indoor basketball question

This winter I'm going to be shooting indoor basketball for a high school in Mansfield, OH. I have a 1D Mark IV that I've used extensively for outdoor well-lit sports (track mainly). To practice, I went to an open-gym just to get an idea on focal lengths and perspectives. The trouble I had was metering. There was a door open at one end of the gym letting massive amounts of outdoor light in, with a huge blown highlight area on the floor. Ok, I can work around that. However, I had trouble metering in the gym and got quite a few over and underexposed images. What is the best way to meter for these situations, such as indoor gyms? I haven't had any trouble outside because that's easier, and controlled portrait indoor light hasn't been a problem. But there are no flashes allowed and I was wondering if there is a more robust way to meter action indoors. I've never done this before. Thanks!

Lowepro Nova 170 - will it fit?

For the Olympics, I need a small bag to fit:
5D2
70-200 2.8 IS II
2x converter
24-105L
+-580EX for focus assist (not essential as I am only going to one indoor event)

The bag must be less than 25L and the smaller the better

The Lowepro Nova 170 AW looks like it might fit the bill - can anyone let me know if it will fit this gear?

Thanks for any help!

First L Lens or upgrade, looking for advice

Hello all, been a long time reader, but not poster.

Ive been shooting since T2i came out, then my needs for a better camera got me a 60D, and never really care much for buying any glass since my canon 50 1.4 covered all my needs.

But now ive been asked to shoot couple weddings.

I know im going nowhere with my kit lens. I ve been also saving up some money because i knew one day i would have to buy a L series, and we all know they are expensive. My first lens was going to be the 70 200 2.8 II but im not sure if my kit lens is going to cut it at the wedding. I also shot events and video, most of the time, low light.

These are the lenses im looking at:

17 40 f4
16 35 f2.8 II
24 105 f4
24 70 f2.8 II ?

I also dont want this lens to be exclusive for weddings, all arround lens too. And i know most ppl will say get the 24 105 f4, but i do love to shoot wide.

Ive saved enough to buy 1 really expensive lens. And by expensive i mean the new 24 70 or was by default the 70 200

Help me choose on this, Thx

Mike

aFeinberg The Documentary (The best landscape photographer in Hawaii)

We just released the documentary on Aaron Feinberg who is a Landscape photographer based out of Kauai, Hawaii. We followed him around for 3 days and found out how he creates such amazing photos time and time again. The video just got picked up by Fstoppers.com and a few other sites.

The documentary was shot on Canon 5D Mk II, 5D Mk III and 7D with various gear and some home built equipment.

Feedback would be appreciated and any questions you may have I would be happy to answer :)

5D Mark III incompatible with Metz 45CL-4?

I have used Metz strobes and Canon bodies together for nearly 20 years. When I bought my first digital, 450D, I was told I couldn't use my 60CT-4 with it. I bought a 45CL-4, SCA 3102 Canon Module, and a SCA 3045 connecting cord that all worked perfectly with the Rebel. All E-TTL functions worked great in both Manual and Tv/Av modes (fill).

I finally treated myself to my first full-frame and decided to make sure the 5DIII and Metz played well together. They did not. The flash would fire; but it was like a full manual burst. The exposure verification light would not illuminate even though the test shots were probably 8 stops over. I noticed that the flash ready light on the 5DIII was blinking intermittently; like it was indicating an error. I tried the camera in various modes; Green Box, Tv, Av, and Manual - nothing worked. I called Metz USA and they said I needed an updated 3102 module with version 5 software. Bought one from Adorama, put it on the camera, everything was the same - malfunction... I should mention that the Rebel and the Metz still function perfectly together...

Anyone else experiencing something similar? I hope - I pray - it's not the body because returning it from here in Afghanistan would be a major PITA! Any suggestions? I was thinking about buying a Canon flash just to make sure the problem wasn't with the body circuitry...

5DMKIII Autofocus help required

Hi,
I finally got my new 5D, moved up from a 400D, and I am "ashamed" to say I have been doing a lot
of reading in the camera manual :o
I've been playing with the autofocus settings while trying to take shots of some of the birds in our garden.
Attached an example that is causing me problems. The display will show me the "fields" being used for AF,
and they will all be lined up on the bird feeder. I havent been able to find a way to persuade the camera
to focus on the bird in such a situation. This is in automatic mode. If I go to spot with the 4 adjacent fields
then it seems to work better. But I want the automatic mode so I can use a tripod and set the camera up
as close as possible to the birds. Using AI Focus mode usually.
I am using the 70-200 F4 IS lens, at 200mm and pretty close to the subjects. Do I maybe want to move
further back so that I have more DOF therefore making the exact focus less important.
Generally I haven't been so happy with the results yet, but thats probably more me than the equiment.
Cheers BRian

Still enjoying the G11

I went out after work to look at the Webb Bridge in Melbourne after sunset, with a view to coming back later with a DSLR. Unfortunately, lacking a really wide angle, you can't really get interesting shots inside the bridge with the G11. I'll need to make another visit with the 5DII and the 17-40mm + 15mm fisheye. Good job I didn't just decide to take the 7D, as I don't have a lens wide enough for the 7D.

These photos were taken using the built in 3 stop ND filter, with the G11 mounted on a Gorillapod, and using a cable release. Exposures were mostly around 13 to 15s, aperture around f/3.5 to f/5.

Another point for a future visit is that I will need to do it at a time when there are fewer cyclists about, and take a 6 or 10 stop ND filter to blur away the pedestrians.

Despite the fact that there are now better cameras available, the G11 still copes quite well.

Recommendations for vacation lenses and gear

Going with my family to San Diego zoo, sea world, Disneyland, beach, etc.

I have canon 5d3, 24-105, 50 1.4, 430 ex ii.

Was looking for a good bag choice with easy access.
Also considering 70-200 f4 is can get new for $900. Tempting
40mm pancake for close to 35mm coverage at least at 2.8 and it would be light.
Only considering the 270 ex ii for flash
Possibly g1x for smaller pics and the beach day.

Any help would be appreciated as I am going in about 45 days.

Best 5D3 Settings for Wide View Sharpness?

I like to shoot wide open views, like this of the Star Spangled Sailabration in Baltimore for this week:

F-314 Thor Heyerdahl Stern View by RyanCrierie, on Flickr

The above image has been processed in Photoshop CS5 with ACR 6.7 and Shadow/Highlighted to pull out 10% shadows, and then had the basic sharpen filter applied to it.

What basic settings are ideal for the 5D3 with kit lens for maximum sharpness with autofocus for such an...expansive subject?

Reason I'm asking the CanonRumorz hive mind is that I've found that the settings you choose on the in-camera menus have a big difference on quality, due to the complexity of the auto-focus system.

Canon STM speed

I've been searching YouTube for some STM focus examples with the T4i, and it seems pretty hard to find a quality video. This is the best I could find.

Canon EOS 650D STM
Canon T4i Auto focus demonstration
Canon EOS 650D Movie Continue AF Test

I'd like to see how fast the STM is in not only the hybrid live view, but standard phase AF. I'd like to see examples of it on a non-T4i as well, such as 5d2/3 for focus speed.

Which 5d/flash to get for a first wedding kit?

So I've decided to get into the pro wedding business for real. I got to know a guy who - if my luck persists - will tell me the tricks of the local trade and coach me through my first contracts.

Until now, I shot purely for fun and learning, and now have a general idea where the shutter button is located. But in the future it'll business all over, at least that's the idea. And while it'll take a while to set me up, I'll have to get my new working gear now to become familiar with it, while keeping the cost-income relationship somewhat sane.

  • Conditions: From what I'm hearing, the basic idea when starting out is to get the job done, capture the important moments, the atmosphere and to get shots of all guests and esp. the relatives, so everyone is happy. The clients I'll be acquiring when starting off won't be concerned with corner sharpness, complicated flash setups or life-size prints.
  • My current gear: I've got the 60d as a backup body and the 100L for portraits, might be nice as a 160/2.8 on the crop body, too. I don't think the 70-300L is adequate for weddings, but from what I'm hearing, the local conditions don't necessarily call for a $2000+ 70-200 anyway. I'll have to get an uwa & some 24-70 lens and might ask about this in a separate thread - but with what body/flash?

BODY: I'll need a somewhat affordable high-iso ff body, so a 5d seems to make sense.

  • 5d2. It's half the price of the successor, and if using focus/recompose people seem to have used this successfully for wedding occasions.
  • 5d3. It's said to have higher iso performance, but looking at the raw samples I hardly can see an improvement? Is better awb, more fps (or quiet shutter), dual cards and the updated af system a noticeable improvement for weddings?

FLASH: For wedding run & gun, I guess I'll need one fast recycling flash with a battery pack, so my 430ex2 won't suffice. While shooting w/o flash might be preferable, as far as I understand it there's hardly any way around it.

  • 580ex2. Isn't sold new anymore, and obsolete ir technology. Seems to have a bug when using hss extensively. But great if combined with 3rd party triggers, esp. since these can trigger dumb ttl flashes, too.
  • 600rt. This is currently the must-have choice for the 5d3, but seems to be compatible with the 5d2 as well - and except the price there are no drawbacks (it can work with 3rd party triggers too)?
