B+W Filters compared to Promaster Filters?

After much thought and saving, I purchased a 135 f/2 this weekend. Love the lens already. I usually use a UV filter on my lenses and have been very happy with the B+W brand thus far (use one on a 17-40 f/4 L). I asked the salesman who sold the 135 to me if they had the B+W UV filter for this lens and he told me that they do sell the B+W filters but also sell the "Promaster" line of Filters. He said that the Promaster HGX line of filters are apparently "better" than B+W, are specifically coated for digital cameras and that B+W does not have such a coating. In the end, they didn't have the B+W UV in the 135's filter size and so I didn't buy a filter yet.

- Is anyone familiar with Promaster filters? (I assume that they are a re-branded version of another manufacturer)

- If so has anyone compared them to the B+W?

Thanks in advance for any comments/ suggestions.

With D800, are 5dII owners seriously considering switching systems? Like now?

I cannot believe what Nikon has put together! It baffles me Canon doesn't already have something near these specs. I'm just contemplating, but if Canon had a high MP DSLR that rivaled these specs we should have already heard by now.

I have a D7000 and a 5DII, which I will probably sell BOTH to buy the D800. Call me a traitor, or whatever, but I do not need high FPS and extreme ISO performance. I am still a "prosumer" and have not to this date sold any prints for any money. Sorry, but I like the best equipment for the best price. I have the following Canon glass: 28-135IS, 35L, 50 1.8 i (metal mount), 17-40L, 70-300 IS

On the Nikon side, I have the following glass: 35/1.8 DX, 50/1.8 AF-D, 85/1.8 AF-D, Tokina 28-70/2.6-2.8, 70-300 VR. I planned for an eventual switch in case Nikon had a superior product. Right now it appears they do.

A good low light- environmental portrait lens?

Hello,

I've looked throughout the forum and couldn't find any help so I thought that I would just post my question. Thanks in advance for any help!

I'm a painter who often uses photographs to work from. I just got a new Canon camera with a APS-C sensor (60D) and now I am trying to find a great lens to capture a lot of detail in low light situations and sharp enough to capture a lot of detail in the surrounding environment. I have experimented some with the 50mm f/1.4 but I'm not sure that it is the absolute best for this situation.

I also understand that I might just need to get a really good flash/continuous lighting set up in order to achieve what I want. If so, could anyone suggest a proper gear set up?

My budget is pretty much wide open and I'm simply looking for the best gear that I can get so if you have any suggestions, thank you for your time!

<strong>*UPDATE*

</strong>Canon USA pricing is now official, and it looks like a significant price bump for the Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II. It better be the best built, best focusing and have the best optical quality of any Canon zoom lens!</p>
<p><strong><strong>Available April 2012</strong>

</strong>EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM $2299</p>
<p><strong>Available June 2012

</strong>EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM $849

EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM $799</p>
<p>I am surprised the 24mm and 28mm are so closely priced. I figured the 24mm would cost a considerable amount more. These primes are NOT priced for the mass market, I’d love to hear the reason for these two lenses and their price point.</p>
<p><strong>From Canon Germany

</strong>The bad news? Below is pricing released on the Canon Germany web site. Still waiting to see official USA pricing.</p>
<p><strong>Available April 2012</strong>

EF 24-70mm 1:2,8L II USM 2299 Euro</p>
<p><strong>Available June 2012

</strong>EF 24mm 1:2,8 IS USM 829 Euro

EF 28mm 1:2,8 IS USM 799 Euro</p>

Is it a good idea to buy a Kiss X5 in the UK ?

Hi,

I'm quite noob and would need some help.

I'm about to buy a Canon EOS 600D here in the UK, but I have the possibility to buy the Kiss X5 for a much better price.

From what I know, both cameras are exactly the same, only the model name engraved on the camera body is different.
The Menu of the Kiss X5 is in Japanese but can be configured to English, so that's not a problem.

My main concern is: will I be able to make future firmware upgrades ?
Are the firmwares provided by Canon for EU and Japanese models exactly the same ?

What do you guys think of my idea of buying the Kiss X5 instead of the 600D ?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

<strong>London, UK, 7th February 2012 –</strong> Canon today launches the rugged and powerful PowerShot D20 – engineered to be a part of the adventure and capture exceptional images and Full HD (1080p) video when living life to the extreme. Housing advanced Canon imaging technology in a robust and sporty body, the PowerShot D20 is waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof and dustproof – ideal for hurtling down the rapids or conquering a mountain and bringing back the photos to prove it.</p>
<p>The PowerShot D20 is packed full of versatile technology including the advanced HS System, designed to produce fantastic picture quality, even in challenging low-light conditions. Sliding easily into a rucksack or attached to a carabiner, the PowerShot D20 is compact, lightweight and built to withstand the rigours of any adventure – freeing users to push themselves to the limits without worrying about their camera coping with the ride.</p>
<p><strong>Canon-quality with every shot

</strong>The heart of the PowerShot D20 is powered by Canon’s HS System, combining a 12.1 Megapixel, high-sensitivity CMOS sensor with the DIGIC 4 image processor for highquality performance in every situation – particularly in low-light situations.</p>
<p>Whether exploring the underwater beauty of an exotic cove or standing on top of the world after a mountain trek, glorious scenic vistas can be captured in their entirety thanks to the high-quality 28mm wide-angle Canon lens, with 5x zoom to bring users closer to the action. For rock-steady videos and crisp stills even in challenging shooting conditions, Intelligent IS automatically analyses the scene and selects the optimum settings for the optical Image Stabilizer from seven different modes1. For example, when filming movies off the beaten trail, Dynamic IS mode compensates for both hand shake and movement. Panning IS mode is perfect when shooting a flock of birds crossing the scene, ensuring the IS system stabilises in only one direction, while Macro IS mode is perfect for shooting the stunning detail of a starfish on a coral reef.</p>
<p>Breathe new life into shooting beneath the waves and capture the rare sights and closeup detail with the special Underwater Macro mode, combined with Quick AF mode to ensure rapid and accurate focus. The accuracy of Underwater White Balance is enhanced and also offers quick adjustment so that users can shoot the depths with beautiful natural colours. Allowing intrepid travellers to push the limits even further and dive into a new world, the optional WP-DC45 waterproof case with external flash support enables the PowerShot D20 to capture rare sights at depths down to 40m.</p>
<p>Handheld Night Scene mode means users can shoot dark scenes with confidence. It captures a series of high-speed shots and combines them into one crisp, well-exposed image. Giving more freedom for users to be creative, Super Slow Motion Movie mode can add tension and draw out the suspense in fast-paced events.</p>
<p><strong>Ready to go whenever and wherever you may be

</strong>Rugged enough to brave the elements, the PowerShot D20 is waterproof to depths down to 10m, and can withstand freezing temperatures down to -10°C. Active Display technology also allows users to control some camera functions by tapping the camera body, making it easier to use when wearing gloves. Built to last, the PowerShot D20 is also shockproof from drops up to 1.5m and environmentally sealed against sand and dust to protect the advanced imaging technology inside.</p>
<p>Those who wish to blaze a trail and map out the adventure for others to follow can use GPS2 tagging and the low energy consumption3 GPS Logger feature. These can be used to tag images with location data or track routes and share discoveries easily using the supplied Map Utility software and through Google Earth4. Retelling the story behind a stunning shot is now even easier with Movie Digest mode creating a ‘making-of’ film reel for a day’s images. When engaged, this mode films the last 4 seconds before each photo is taken in 720p HD resolution and combines all the clips from that day to create a movie that allows users to document their experiences in a new and exciting way.</p>
<p>When things happen fast, the PowerShot D20 is always ready to go. The dedicated Movie Record button means users can switch instantly to Full HD 1080p movie quality and zero in on the action with the 5x optical zoom without missing a moment. Users can then relive the experience on a big screen thanks to the HDMI connection with CEC, allowing them to pause, rewind and replay any clip using the remote control of a compatible HDTV.</p>
<p><strong>Easy to use, easy to explore

</strong>Even when the action is fast and furious, frame the scene perfectly with just a glance at the bright, vibrant 7.5 cm (3.0″) 460,000 dot PureColor II LCD screen with 4:3 aspect ratio. It’s also easier than ever to capture great images without needing extensive photography experience thanks to Canon’s enhanced Smart Auto feature which detects 32 different scenes, applying the best combination of camera settings to ensure every shot is well-exposed.</p>
<p>The PowerShot D20 features seven5 creative effects that can be applied to give every shot new impact, allowing photographers to explore the world and change how people view it. Landscapes offer the impression of a scale model with Miniature Effect or similar effects to those of a fish-eye lens can be applied to present a completely unique view of the world.</p>
<p><strong>Accessories for adventure

</strong>The optional Accessory Kit includes Carabiner and Shoulder Straps to keep the camera handy when hiking or climbing, a special Neoprene Pouch and a Silicon Jacket for even more protection, as well as a Float to keep the camera at the surface when swimming, making the PowerShot D20 ready for many adventures.</p>
<p><strong>Join the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY community

</strong>Owners of this new model can also join the newly updated CANON iMAGE GATEWAY, an online facility for sharing photos and video now providing up to 10 GB of personal storage capacity, perfect for storing many photos, even in full resolution. <p><strong>Introducing the world’s first wide-angle primes with IS

</strong>Canon today also launches the new EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM and EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM – the world’s first 24mm and 28mm fixed wide-angle lenses to feature optical IS technology. Ideal for landscape and reportage, both lenses offer outstanding flexibility allowing photographers to shoot an even broader range of scenes and subjects – combining fast apertures with IS to enable sharp results when shooting handheld, even in low light conditions.</p>
<p>Offering an advantage of up to 4-stops over lenses without IS, both lenses are ideal for capturing more of the scene thanks to their wider focal lengths. Both feature a wide f/2.8 aperture, allowing photographers to explore shallow depth of field, or to shoot in lower-light conditions. Wide apertures and IS technology also make each lens ideal for shooting fast-moving subjects, while Canon’s advanced IS technology is able to detect intentional panning movement and automatically switch from Normal IS mode to Panning IS mode – helping users to capture movement with greater accuracy.</p>
Silent, high-speed AF performance is provided by the inclusion of a ring-type USM and additional features including optimized AF control. Full-time manual focusing also ensures adjustments can be made even when AF is engaged, while a minimum focusing distance of 0.20m (EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM) and 0.23m (EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM) allows photographers to get even closer to smaller or more detailed subjects.</p>
<p><strong>Designed to perform

</strong>Both the EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM and EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM feature redesigned optics to improve image quality and reduce the need for post-production. An aspherical glass moulded (GMo) lens element is incorporated to correct aberration throughout the optical system, while Canon’s optimised Super Spectra Coatings reduce ghosting and flare for stand-out image quality. Externally, both models also boast a number of design similarities with Canon’s professional L-series lenses, with a similar coating on the barrel and a similar design on the focus ring. A distance scale is also included to assist with landscape photography, while the compact design makes these lenses an unobtrusive addition to any kit bag.</p>

<p><strong>Finally Announced!</strong></p>
<p>London, UK, 7th February 2012 – Canon today adds to its world-famous EF lens series with the launch of three new lenses for photography professionals and enthusiasts. The new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM professional zoom lens is an update to the popular EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM, while the new EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM and EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM are the world’s first1 wide-angle prime lenses to feature optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology. All three provide the highest levels of performance for modern digital photographers, combining premium image quality with durable, userfriendly designs.</p>
<p><strong>EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM: the ultra-high performance standard zoom

</strong>The new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM features completely redesigned optics to provide outstanding clarity, image quality and durability. A compact design makes it ideal for carrying on every shoot, and a range of optical enhancements provide improved performance – capturing greater detail across the frame while reducing distortion throughout the entire zoom range, particularly at the maximum 70mm focal length.</p>
<p>With a redesigned optical system that includes two Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) and one Super UD aspheric elements to minimise chromatic aberration and colour blurring, the lens delivers consistently sharp, high-contrast images. Each lens element also features Canon’s optimised Super Spectra coatings to reduce ghosting and flare and ensure excellent colour balance. Additionally, a fluorine coating minimises the amount of dust, dirt and fingerprints that adhere to the front and rear of the lens, helping to maintain superior image quality.</p>
<p>The EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM also enables photographers to capture their subjects up close, with a minimum focusing distance of 0.38m at all focal lengths throughout the zoom range. A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) works in combination with a highperformance CPU and advanced AF algorithms to ensure accurate, silent and ultraresponsive autofocus. For those who prefer to maintain full control in every shot, fulltime manual focusing allows photographers to precisely tweak or alter the focus of their shot at any time, even when AF is engaged.</p>
<p><strong>Distinguished L-series design

</strong>The EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM is the latest lens from the elite L-series to offer Canon’s high-grade and user-focused design enhancements. The mechanical structure of the lens has been improved to offer enhanced zoom durability and greater shake and shock resistance within the lens barrel. The size of the lens has also been reduced by 10mm compared to the previous model, providing enhanced portability and greater convenience in everyday use. A new Zoom Lock lever also enables photographers to lock the zoom position at the extreme wide end to prevent damage to the lens in transit, while a water and dustproof construction2 enables users to continue shooting in harsh conditions.</p>

Canon 1DX sample photos posted

So this CR3 said:

Canon Rumors said:
There will not be a 5D Mark III or similar announced on February 7, 2012. It is suggested the “embargo” lift on the 7th may be for samples from the EOS-1D X.

It's now Feb 7. I just check Canon JP and DC Watch. There are still no high resolution samples.

Would this embargo lift be actually related to the announcement of 24-70 f/2.8 II on Feb 7?

When will we be able to see 1D X high resolution samples like those of D800 that are available on day 1???

D800 - Sample Photos

Guessing by the slow downloads from the Nikon site that at least 50K people are busy downloading the sample photos right now after midnight.

Would be interested to hear peoples reaction of the sample photos. They're claiming detail like a medium format, and possibly so; depth of color, we'll see.

Feedback welcome.

Reddy.

D800 is finally here

I know lots of Canon fans were in denial of a 36 megapixel D800, but it looks like most of the rumored specs were 100% spot on. This is a Brazilian release translated to English, so it does read a little funny, but you can make out the specs nonetheless.

Come on Canon, I really don't want to switch, so please announce a 5D3 that can go head-to-head with this beastly Nikon.

From PB via NL: 5DII to remain in lineup, completely new model instead?

There we read:
"A tipster recently sent me word that the Canon 5D Mark II would remain in Canon’s lineup in the near future. However, another new DSLR model would be released soon (instead of a 5D Mark III) and would be a step-up from the 5D Mark II."
read more here, it has been discussed earlier at CR. A confirmation?

Is this a Pre-announcement leak for the D800?

Got it from Nikon Rumors: Brazilian sites leakes official D800 pics:

36.3mp
Native ISO of 6400
4/6FPS (Native/Battery Grip)

http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=pt&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fztop.com.br%2F2012%2F02%2F06%2Fnumeros-enormes-os-36-megapixels-da-nikon-d800%2F

The "D" on the D800 font looks a bit weird... maybe it's just the angle of the body that make it look so.

Lens protection

I'm still undecided on UV filters to protect the front element of my lenses. There seems to be 2 camps, for and against using protective filters.

On the plus side you have size & convenience (I find hoods both bulky: on the lens it makes you stand out like a sore thumb, in the bag it's a squeeze, in the pouch it doesn't fit - and finicky: annoying to screw on & off every time you take the camera out of the bag), protects against abrasions, interferes a lot less with a polariser than a hood, and as an extra bonus cuts through haze a bit.

However on the negative side is cost, extra glass to cause nasty refractions or worse (avoidable by making the cost problem worse ;-), vignetting, and as an extra bonus hoods protect against flare (even if it is minimal) - though of course there's nothing stopping you from having filter + hood.

I used to have a Hoya on my 70-300 and you really did notice the difference (in a bad way, especially loss of resolution). A guy from a shop (not where I bought it) said that was really strange and the filter might be faulty. I now have a B+W on my 24-105, I should do some pixel peeping on it someday I guess.

In the end I don't know if it is really an issue, I can't see Frank Cappa or Ansel Adams angsting over these kind of things (perhaps we angst over gear because we aren't them ;-). The arguments I've seen tend to border on the fanatical (as, I'm sorry to say, what I sometimes read about Nikon on these forums - a camera is just a tool, get over it ;-).

Thoughts on the matter...?

HELP! Can't remove dirt from 1Ds MkIII sensor!

A mate of mine is having problems with his 1Ds MkIII's sensor :'(, he keeps seeing the dust bunnies in shots, but he has cleaned the sensor five or six times with swabs and this hasn't cleared them. He's also sent the camera off for cleaning (not to Canon yet) and they don't think it's dirt... I've attached a sample image.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this could be, or how to get rid of it?

Thanks in advance.

What UWA options do I have with 77mm Filter size?

Guys what UWA lens options do I have; if I want to stay with a 77mm Filter size?

FF compatible. I already have the 24-105mm so something "noticeably" wider.

Would prefer f2.8 but can work with f4 +IS as a compromise.

I do not mind getting used gear.. so older lenses are game (as long as they are AF).

Would prefer the price to remain under $900. Appreciate the experiences of others on this.

Thanks!

FEB announcement for a new APS-C? Not for 5d II/X?

Looking back at the some of the older posts, I came across this one from CR on November 8th...

Received word today, that the next planned DSLR announcement from Canon will be in February 2012. It’s a loose date and could happen at the end of January as well. The floods in Thailand are messing with parts availability.

It will most likely be a camera using the current 18mp sensor, with some modifications. Expect DIGIC V as well

I’m told from the same person we’ll see a lens announcement before the next DSLR. No word on what.
Next “G”?

Again, the same person is saying the next “G” series camera will be a departure from what we have now.

With that information, assumably from a single source we have the following:

1. The "G" series camera was clearly the G1X, so that information was accurate... CHECK

2. The new lenses BEFORE we see a new camera body. We have the three new lenses posted today (24mm, 28mm, and 24-70mm) which may come before/with a new body.... CHECK

3. New APS-C body in february???

The source clearly has a source of reliable infomation for the first two portions, and the tip was posted months before the G1X and new lenses. Could we be seeing an new APS-C body on the predicted "feburary announcement" instead of the anticipated FF body? Only a T4i (same 18MP sensor) with the two non-L wide angle primes?
