Sigma 12-24 discontinued / replaced ?

Hi,

Does anyone know anything about the Sigma 12/24 being either replaced or discontinued?

I just tried to get one from two different places in Australia and they both have it listed as out of stock with no ETA of when it will be back in stock.

I have found somewhere else that has it in stock (but at more than I was offered at JB Hifi) but if it's just about to be replaced, I could wait for the new one.

cheers

Looking for backup camera body

Well I would like to have a backup camera body, and I currently shoot with both the 5D Mark III and 1D Mark IV. There is someone that has offered me his 1Ds Mark III that was his backup body (he pre-ordered the 1D X) for $4000. It wasn't used much because his backup wasn't used much, maybe has 5-7k actuations. He did send it to Canon to have it refurbished, which it is. Well, I'm not sure it is worth it. I can get a 5D Mark II for 2k that I wouldn't use as much as my current cameras, but I've never even used a 1Ds series camera. Would it be woth it? What can the 1Ds III do that say, the 5D Mark III and II can't? Thanks for any input.

P.S. I can afford it but the issue is whether it is worth it or necessary. Ah maybe I should just sell my 1D Mark IV and get a 1D X :)

Along the sea front in Aberavon, South Wales

The weather hasn't been fantastic in my part of Wales but we have been spared (touches wood) the severe flooding that other parts of the country have suffered.

I took a stroll down to the beach with my camera and my new CZ 35mm lens to put it through its paces out and about:

Is there any reason EF mount lenses couldn't fit mirrorless cameras?

1.) Assuming that a manufacturer wanted to make them work, and was not hoping instead to sell 2x as many lenses (or to make a smaller body), is there any reason a mirrorless camera body couldn't use everyone's nice, expensive, existing "L" glass? I mean, is there any basic mechanical/operational difference necessary for a mirrorless lens vs. a traditional lens?

2.) If there is no difference, do you think Canon will nevertheless choose to make new mirrorless bodies incompatible with EF lenses?

5D3 switching bw stills/video

Is there a way to save video settings so when you're switching between stills to video you don't have to adjust the shutter speed (and other settings) every time? When shooting video I always shoot at a shutter of 1/50 (at 24), which is annoying to switch to when I'm shooting stills outside at a high shutter and need to quickly capture some video.

right time to turn pro...?

I've watched these forums for a while now although I don't ever post...

I was just wondering how everyone felt about turning pro, how it went and how it's turning out? I'm very much aware of the cons with regard to quitting a stable day job and having a guaranteed income every month with which to pay the bills but I'm also sick to death of it and the mundanity of it all.

Here's my background

18 - never touched a camera above a point and shoot 35mm but get a job as a studio assistant. worked with 5x4 cambo's and sinars & medium format hasselblads and mamiyas shooting mainly commercial product

23 - went to uni, got a degree in graphics. photography as a minor hobby. very minor.

26 - graduate, got a job as a designer but started a photography department, built it up and shoot all our product for advertising, net and brochure. mainly watches and jewellery. with the company dime i bought bowens flash heads, a canon 1Ds 3 and all the kit I wanted. cost about £8000 to set up

a couple of years ago a friend asked me if i could shoot her wedding. I'd never done it before or in fact owned a decent camera of my own so I said yes. obviously. so I went and bought a 500D and a jessops flash which was all i could afford at the time for about £800. It was a little different than shooting with the 1Ds but I got over it.

I've been doing quite a few weddings since, bought a 60D, a 7D, loads of lenses (no L's) and invested in a set up so i can shoot studio standard product shots in my kitchen (i've never charged for any work I've done for people up until I shot a rather large job for a big company last week)

my wedding shot's are ok, obviously would be better if I owned a 5Dii
my product shots are above average, obviously would better if i owned a 1Ds iii (or upcoming X)
I have a little experience with models but not much past shooting of friends that are "alt. models"

here's a bit of my portfolio : www.lewismaxwell.carbonmade.com

I'd like to actually have a conversation with someone with the experience of jacking it all in to live the proverbial dream as I sit here with my notice written out but not the guts to give it in and go it alone

help?

Recommendation for backpack

I currently live in Southeast Asia. In September I will go on a motorcycle drive in central Vietnam for a about a week. I have done several trips like this before so I know what kind of conditions I will encounter - very hot and humid and sometimes heavy rain. But I haven't done with serious camera gear. This time I will travel with a 5D3, 24-105, a longer zoom - probably 70-300L, maybe the 35L, S100 and a 270EX. I want to bring serious camera gear since I will write a couple of travel articles from this and include pics. Now since this is a motorcycle trip I will pack light. I will carry a backpack and probably one of those water proof 'soft tubes' that you would bring on a boat.

My question is about the backpack. I have looked at the Lowepro Pro Trekker 600AW. Questions around this, from those who have experience of this or the 400, is it waterproof? With above mentioned gear, will there be any other room for for example some clothes? Will the lid protect the gear against minor shock impacts? I have a couple of other Lowepro bags and I am very happy with them.

My backup plan is to use a regular larger backpack and stuff the camera gear inside, but that will make it so much more difficult to access the stuff. Also, as I will bring a couple of tools and a knife I will need one bag that I can check in, I will need a two bag solution.

Thanks in advance!

From CW: Canon Working On A DSLR With A Sensor Bigger Than Full-Frame?

Someone over at CW just came up with this idea again. CR -3? 8)
Quotation from CW:
"I was a little bit uncertain if I should post this. The rumor comes from a new source, and it is the first time I hear this very rumor. After having had some emails with the source, I had the feeling that I could trust it. However, this is a rumor, and as all rumors it has to be taken with a grain of salt. Ok, here it is: I have been told that Canon is working on a new DSLR, a camera that will be a complete game changer and that will be announced in September (Photokina). Aimed at the super-pro photo-crowd, this DSLR will sport a entirely new sensor, a sensor that is said to be bigger than a full-frame sensor. No word, unfortunately, about resolution or other core specs, nor if it will be medium format or not. Just “bigger than full-frame” (see the pic below to get an idea about sensor sizes). If the rumor turns out to be true, it would mean that Canon is expanding its territory, not only jumping (hopefully soon) on the mirror-less bandwagon, but also invading a domain where others are the main players.

This is a hot summer regarding Canon announcements, and we can expect more rumors to leak in the next weeks and months. We should see a mirror-less camera announced in the next weeks (if all the rumors I and others reported are true). Then there is Photokina in September, where most of us expect the EOS 70D and the EOS 7D Mark II to be announced. And the new, mysterious DSLR with a sensor bigger than full-frame. Stay tuned!"

Here's the link to it.

Canon 35mm f/1.4 L or Canon 50 mm f.1.2 L - for Weddings

Hello,
Can you please suggest which lens is better for shooting Weddings (still pictures)?
Is it 35mm 1.4 more useful than 50mm 1.2 or the other way?
I am not able to decide. Have budget for only one lens.
I use Canon 5D Mark III. I will be using the lens primarily for shooting bride and/or groom and groups.
I have 70-200 2.8 and 24-105 4.0 lenses as well if it helps for you to make a better suggestion.
I am kind of leaning towards 35 mm but I am afraid that I may have to get too close for the individual shots.
Thank you for your suggestions in advance!
Regards.

60D owners...help, i need reassurance before i pull the trigger

Please, post your opinion and/or pictures with your 60D. Especially if its portraits, action shots, or macro. I'm gonna buy a 60D with the 18-200 lens before the end of June since that's when the rebates stop. My newborn son is growing fast and I'm missing a lot of memories from a slow p&s. I really just need reassurance that even if the 60D is 2 years old its still capable of awesome shots! I really can't afford to wait for a 70D nor afford the price. I'm just assuming a 70D is coming out and based on the rise in price of the new rebel. Please help me out!

EF-S 18-135mm IS STM vs EF 28-135mm IS

I use the Canon EF 28-135mm IS for my "everyday" lens and it's been fine for me. However, I see there's a new EF-S 18-135mm which would give me a wider shot and probably reduce my need for the Tokina ultra wide lens I often have to carry around with me. Any thoughts on this new EF-S lens relative to the older 28-135mm - I'm considering making a switch and would appreciate any input.

microadjustment advise?

Yo! I am curious about microadjustment. I am shooting the 5D3 and get sharp shots most of the time but only get sick, tack unreal sharp shots say 1 of 50 if not more. Is this a need to microadjust? Is it possible to get that tack sharp focus more often. To be the norm not every so often. Dont get me wrong the shots are def usable for my clients but for me the ones that just pop off the screen are what get me excited. And i do shot wide open to smaller aperatures and variable shutter speeds and have found no correlation as to when these amazing sharp shots happen. They are all over the board when it happens. And this is with all my lenses. Any advice is appreciated. Thx

Let's see your film shots

Hi all,

So the other day i picked up a second hand EOS 3 for a steal just so i could play around with shooting some 35mm film again. I love the aesthetic of film and the discipline that comes with shooting with it. The cost of processing and scanning 35mm in Australia is a little steep so every time i press the shutter it costs me 1.16AUD.

Here are a couple of test shots from a roll of Kodak Gold 200 that expired in 2007. If you've been recently shooting some 35mm lets see some of your shots.

cheers
Scott

4 More DSLRs Coming in 2012? [CR2]

More to come

Received some information that Canon is far from done as far as camera launches go for 2012. I am being told that 4 more DSLRs are coming in 2012.

Which cameras?

It’s unknown if the expected mirrorless entry counts against the mentioned 4 camera bodies.

Speculation about what the 4 cameras could possibly be are below.

1) “Entry Level” full frame camera. Think of it as a direct replacement for the 5D Mark II.

2) Prosumer APS-C, possibly the 70D and not a direct replacement of the 7D.

3) The big megapixel entry, mentioned to be an EOS-1D style body.

4) A mirrorless entry.

If the mirrorless doesn’t count against the 4 purported camera bodies, I’m unsure what else Canon could have up their sleeves for the EOS line. A few people have suggested a 5D in the cinema EOS lineup, however I don’t think that’s likely until after the EOS-1D C starts shipping in late 2012.
