The Next Canon PowerShot is Coming This Year

Would love to see an APS-C zoom like the G1x III. If they had the guts to make a bright prime that would be even cooler. But a zoom isn’t so bad either. Hope the sensor can read out fast enough and that it carries the water resistance and EVF of the G1X III. In fact, if they can update the battery, sensor, and processor, I’m sure it would find an audience. Also I would request the automatic lens cap like the G7X III, a cap for a compact point and shoot feels weird and I don’t use the filter ring except for NDs and a compact should have built-in NDs. If they could stretch the aperture to f/2.5 or f/2.2 on the short end that would be very cool too.
I don't want APS-C. That just means another $1500+ camera with a slow zoom lens. What i want is a G16 or Ixus sized camera with modern tech and sensor and a good quality 24-100 or 24-200mm lens.

Yep. Canon would be better off making a soap bar RF-S body than handicapping an APS-C sensor with a compact camera lens. Concept reminds me of the LX100....

Canon just needs to make more super zoom or just good zoom around 400mm compact camera's with raw, travel buddies to take with you to everywhere there are already so much compact camera's with 2x or 3x zoom😒
While I'd rather have a high quality 2X or 3X zoom than one of these mediocre superzooms. You simply cannot combine low cost, extreme focal variation, wide open aperture and high IQ.
Sure, it is tempting to have one single "does it all" lens, but there's often a drawback to accept, optical quality and aperture.
No free lunch! :)

Still hoping for a good zoom range around 400mm and it needs to have raw and a bigger sensor, or a new G5X with new features...

But come on canon hurry up 😂 make compact camera's for photographers instead of vlogging
I am not smart enough to grasp why anyone would want a telephoto on this. The form factor is not conducive for telephoto shots. I would prefer it to be wider than current camera. It is my walk around camera and a wider lens would be nice.

400mm equivalent and a bigger sensor, don’t hold your breath. P&S cameras can have supertelephoto equivalent focal lengths because of the smaller sensors.

Everyone has different needs and preferences. Like you, I prefer wider for a walkaround lens/camera. I really like the 16-50mm (equivalent) range of my PowerShot V1 (enough so that I pre-ordered the RF 20-50/4 to use with my R8). Still, I understand that some people want/need a P&S with more range. Before my DSLR days began, I used an Olympus C-765 UZ, 4 MP with a 38-380mm (FF equivalent, 6x crop factor). One of the places it went with me was on a trip to Africa that included a safari in Tanzania and a visit with mountain gorillas in Rwanda.

Yeah, but.. Cameras without a viewfinder are so cumbersome to use with a long lens.

It's as ugly as a stump fence.
Looks like an inmate carved it out of soap.
Oh, I didn't think it was that bad...

Maybe I was just used to it, since before that I had an Olympus C-960Z (1.3 MP sensor, 35-105mm equivalent).

...and before that I had an Olympus Stylus Epic Zoom 80 (film, 35-80mm actual).

the pictures it took look great.
Thanks, and for me that's always been the point. I've never really understood why the appearance of a tool they're using matters so much to some people. I dunno...maybe the dude with the tool belt and the too-low jeans that show way too much is magically transformed into a ruggedly handsome guy when he's framing a wall using this instead of a regular old hammer.

Hey, maybe that's how Clark Gable and Harrison Ford went from construction workers to actors? Somehow, I doubt it.

I liked the G9- G12 models that were small and came with a little ovf. They are still quite popular used.
I had a G7, a nice little brick of a camera, unfortunately Canon omitted with that camera the possibility to shoot RAW. But this sort of OVF was just a sort of a peephole - no frame indicated, no rangefinder patch... I didn't like it.

beautiful - I like in particular the dreamy Gorilla. Looking at the lion, I personally would prefer to have a tele lens instead of a wide angle lens - a close-up might give you a too deep insight in the inwards of such a carnivore ;)
Thanks! The lion was in the Ngorongoro Crater, they are not shy and closely approach the safari vehicles.

Actually, my wife and I were very close to the mountain gorillas, too...

Yes, I had a G9. The viewfinder was much less impressive than e.g. the old Owl /af2 film compacts which had an ovf similar in size/quality to my Leica 36mm ovf (which is to say, better than my 5D)

Ovfs are good with primes. Still l'd like to think Canon could improve the basic formula with the zooming ovf as per the g7- g12 series, but bigger. Or, much more likely, just use an evf with ovf sim tech....the only problem with the evfs is they are often protruding out the back and therefore ruin pocketability. If set forwards (protruding out the front slightly in the same width area as the smallest prime lens protrudes) it would be much better for pockets...

I am used to classic rangefinder and SLR viewfinders, and compared to them the OVFs of these compacts are dissappointing (the biggest and brightest OVF I know has my New Mamiya 6 rangefinder). But of course, they help when it is too bright for shooting with the screen display on the camera's back.

An OVF and hot shoe takes up considerable area at the top of compact cameras. Not having both on the G7X III is a plus for me regarding size for pocket ability.

Rear views of G15, G1X I and G7X III shown.

(The black bar at the top of the rear LCD displays is the reflection of the forward edge of my background paper)
