Back to OP's original observation: CIPA statistics list what they call "fitment ratio" - i.e. number of lenses produced vs. number of bodies - fairly consistently runs around 1.6 to 1.7. Generally speaking that implies most consumers may only buy a basic kit with one zoom lens or perhaps the two zoom lens kit and never buy another lens. CR forum readers are clearly not typical, me included. My inventory is below - some of it is fairly old (discontinued even) but it does what I need it to do.

I'll soon be selling the EF 70-200 to put towards the R3 closer to its release date. I may also end up selling the EF 24-70 and EF 35mm F/1.4L II, picking up the RF 24-70 alongside the R3. It's tough being between two systems right now, but excited to get moved over.

The EF 85mm F/1.4L IS is my most recent purchase. I couldn't justify an extra $1400 for the RF 85 F/1.2, and I can't imagine an RF 84 1.4 is coming anytime in the next two-three years. I don't mind the adapter for a fairly special-use lens, either.

As for my next lens, it'll depend on a lot of things. It may very well be the RF 24-70, but I would immediately jump on and pre-order a small RF 24mm F/2.8 prime, I would love to be able to have a "small" kit with the RF 24, RF 35, and RF 70-200, I've mainly done some trips with just the 35 and 70-200, but I've normally brought the 24-70 or 16-35 just to have a wider angle. It would be nice to replace a larger zoom with a small 24mm prime when I need a quick wide shot.

Next year I'll be incredibly interested to see if Canon releases a 120-300mm f/2.8, or what they do with the RF 300 f/2.8. I primarily feel like the biggest gap left in my line-up in big, fast glass, and it would be great to add an RF 120-300mm F/2.8 after the R3 comes out. Outside of that, I will also definitely pick up the RF 100mm F/2.8 macro at some point in the next few years.

In the longterm, I could also see myself replacing the EF 16-35mm F/4L IS. I'll have to see what options Canon releases, but I'm very tempted to move up the 15-35mm F/2.8L IS for more night-time shots, sports, and astro work. It will be a tough decision if Canon also releases a 14-35mm F/4L IS to upgrade it, though.

That's certainly true. But maybe also worth pointing out that enthusiasts buying multiple bodies also drops that ratio. Your 13 lenses and 4 bodies give you a personal fitment ratio of just 3.25, if it is just the ratio between lenses and bodies. So your interpretation of the number isn't wrong, but reality might not be as dire as the number suggests. Maybe there's also a lot of folks with 2 or more active bodies, that upgrade frequently. Certainly bodies need more frequent updates than lenses.

My original Rebel is gone, as is my 5D classic, but I still have my 40D and 60D, though not used often. My 6D gets used most, but when I know I need to crop, the 5DsR is amazing. With the pandemic the number of shutter clicks in the last year is appallingly low. I hope we can resume our travels out of the country in 2022. I cannot remember the last time I used the EFS 15-85mm. All my other lenses are EF, and the 24-105 pretty much lives on my 6D when traveling. Least used EF is the 85mm f/1.8 and 300 f/4, but for BIF the 400mm f/5.6 is still my go to lens. My tabular list:
