Show your Bird Portraits

Great crested grebe.
It was late in the day and a low sun easily gets the whites on these birds overexposed. So I exposed for the whites and hoped for the best. I brightened the crest a bit in post so it stood out some against the background and applied some sharpening.

it never fails if I switch to a macro lens something good will appear that would be better with 100-400mm. This is the best shot of this woodpecker, mostly it was either too high or behind foliage. By the time is switched lenses, I had know idea where it went off to. This frequently happens with deer too .

On the last day of our vacation I noticed this outside the kids bedroom window;

I managed to get to where it flew of to:
20231019 0909 55 Nederland Lelystad - Canon EOS R5 - RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM at 500 mm ...jpeg
It turns out to be a Merlin, which are fairly rare here. I never thought I would get this close to a wild falcon, nor that my kids would be that close as well. I’m going to gloss over having a pane of glass in front of the bird :)

iPhone for the first pic, R5+100-500L for the second one, with a large scoop of DxO denoising.

Thank you!!! I feel like I’m pushing the limits of the 100-500 lens. I’m actually very close to lowering my FICO score and buying a 600f4! Hope the images even get better at a higher clip
Do it! I love using my EF 600mm f/4 III, and my wife hasn’t filed divorce papers over it.

Great memory from your vacation!
And I like the first photo better: I don't mean IQ! It's just a cute, very wet raptor looking at a dry place despite the obvious human presence!
And for the jock: your only mistake? You didn't left that window open (despite of the rain!):LOL:!
