<p><strong>Two New PowerShot Cameras

</strong>Below are a couple of images of upcoming PowerShot superzooms. We have the 16x zoom PowerShot SX160 IS and the 30x zoom PowerShot SX500 IS. Both cameras  will be arriving soon.</p>

Two New PowerShot Cameras to be announced (CR1)

Two New PowerShot Cameras this month? Neither of these cameras seem like successors for the G12 I do hope this 'news' is wrong and there is a G series to be released soon.

Anyway if SX160 IS s a successor to the SX150 IS

then it probably wont have an articulated screen like the G series. As to the sensor well that's anyone's guess??? Processor is not digic 5, no raw? I'll pass.

OK fine... but

the lenses are a little slow. I enjoy my SX 230 HS as a fun little P&S camera -- but its replacement got slower at the wide end, and with these cameras the trend continues...

How about some 70D 6D 3D 7DmkII rumors.... Here's an inclusive compendium...

16x is impressive. It looks like it will fit in a pocket too. 16MP is about right as well. f/3.5 is slow, f/5.9 is only good for really brightly lit events. I would have liked to have seen f/2.8.

I worry about the noise and the shutter speed too. But, it looks like an improvement over previous ones.

With the masses using iPhones and the like, to whom is Canon marketing these cameras? Most people only need Facebook resolution, so the de facto standard smart phone is a better choice for the application.

I was just in NYC and I noticed that the tourists were either using a phone as a camera or a DSLR, very few point and shoot cameras out in the real world.

There are still a lot of people who take pictures of their kids/family and print the pictures to put on their wall. Still lots of people who travel or do outdoors stuff where an iPhone is lacking either on the zoom, focus, or detail side of things. I'm not super familiar with the iPhone, but what is its burst rate? Oh and you can't replace the batteries, so, there goes multi-day trip use. Not to mention, an iPhone by itself costs $500+.

The market for P+S's is definitely shrinking; which is why they've become more niche products. You get these super-zoom ones, or the big sensor P+S cameras like the G12/G1X. Kinda hard to find the standard cheap 5x zoom P+S anymore because of camera phones.

SX500: I'm impressed with the fact that they FINALLY moved that obnoxious frame-assist button away from the thumb grip, where I was ALWAYS hitting it by accident on the SX30/40.

I'm anxious to see the back, tho. Looks like they may have eliminated the viewfinder - which would NOT be cool.

Can't wait to see all the specs, whether it's enough of an improvement over the SX40 to lure me to an upgrade.
