5D3 Auto Focus Question

Sorry to show my ignorance, but are you supposed to hear a focus confirmation beep when manual focussing? I've just tried it on my 5DMkIII and ... no confirmation beep whilst manual focussing! Is this a custom setting?

What lens? Also, you must be half-pressing the shutter release or pressing the AF-ON button to get the focus confirmation during MF...

Ah, I didn't realise that you had to half-press the shutter release to get the focus confirmation beep. I've tried it and it works. Thanks for the tip. Doesn't work when pressing the AF-ON button though.

That will depend on how the C.Fn's are set up for the AF-ON button.

Checked that and the AF-ON button is set to same default function as half-pressing the shutter release. After a little trial and error though, I've found the problem i.e. I had the camera set to intelligent auto mode, which appears to disable the AF-ON button as well as a multitude of other things. Switch to another shooting mode and the focus confirmation beep works when the AF-ON button is pressed as well as when the shutter release button is half-pressed.

Yes, the green auto mode cancels/limits many functions. Personally, I use back-button AF (where AF-ON focuses, but half-pressing the shutter doesn't), so green square mode is useful when I want to hand the camera to a bystander. But that's the only time I use it (and there's no equivalent on the 1D X I'm getting...).

I have a late model 1Dmk3 and never had any problem with it's AF
I think only early models suffered from the debacle

The Mk III I had for a while was excellent too.

I think the Mk IV did a pretty good job of getting Canon back into the AF game even if we do accept that the Mk III was an unmitigated disaster.

It is possible, but after the 1D Mk III AF debacle, I'll bet Canon has put everything into this AF unit.
