5DS place on update roadmap

The updated roadmap looks interesting; looks like all upper end Canon products will likely have the new on chip ADC technology by the end of next year.......only thing missing from the map is the 5DS......I wonder when that will get an upgrade? Hopefully as soon as possible, as that would make it the ultimate (at least for now) landscape body! Any thoughts?

I suspect it will be a new high MP sensor in whatever body form the 5d4 comes out with, so hopefully it doesn't take them too long, and then we all have something we want and no more DR issues to discuss!

We did hear a while back that with canon's new sensor tech that the 5ds might get a relatively quick update. Still, it's only a year old, so it couldn't be within the next year- late 2017 at the earliest imo

I'm hard pressed to think of a camera costing north of $3k getting a quick (12-18 months) follow-up. I don't think it's happened since the 1D / 1Ds days -- see graphic from Northlight.

Even if they wanted to race a new 5DS through, the rollout of the 1DX II, the announcement/hype/ordering/rollout of the 5D4 and then the 6D2 all will come before it. Canon (of late) tries to not have one higher-end rig steal any attention/interest/sales away from another until it's had it's fair share of the spotlight.

Sure:

1. Assuming rather than ultimate you mean "best," why what makes you think the hypothetical 5DS with on-chip ADC is better for landscape than, say, a phase one XF 100MP?

The 5DS has very slightly better DR than the 5D MKIII. Shadow pulls above 1600 iso do look noisey when you crop images particularly if using the 1.6X crop. Ideally 14 stops of DR would be better but the camera is definately usable as it is. At 100-400 iso the 5DS sensor is definately better than the 6D and the 5D MKIII its not simply resolution but colorimage is better and it has no banding that is evident in some shots with the 6D and 5D MKIII. On this last point Ive taken shots in the same position with the 6D and the 5DS at 100 iso and same camera settings with much better evenly illuminated blue skies on the 5DS.
So I think Canon will concentrate on the 5D MKIV and the 6D MKII well before changing the 5DS/r (which I think will shrink to one camera without the AA filter).

Wasn't there a rumor that the 5DS / R would get a minor update in ergonomics and built to use synergies with the 5D4?
But I don't believe that there will be a new sensor in less than one year after the 5D4 release.

Why not? There's no competition between those two cameras.
I hope you're right. But I don't believe in Canon on that point.

A 5DSn would make sense, a bit like when they fixed some of the problems of the Canon 1D II. Knowing canon though I doubt it will happen and an update will come in about four years time after they have shot themselves thoroughly in the foot.

This happens all the time:

5D3 released with silent shutter --> 1DX users have to wait years for it to come in the 1DX II
7D2 released with anti-flicker mode, 70D comes out with DPAF, etc. --> 5D3 users have to wait years for it come in the 5D4 (or 5DS, I guess)

And yes, the 5D4 will have some new hotness the 5DS will not get. If I had to guess, it would probably a 'lite' version of the 1DX II AF system. But it might be something altogether unexpected. It happens.

Canon can't refresh all its lines so that every advancement is retroactively available to all users. There's only so much you can do with a firmware update.
