Someone needs to explain to me why DPr is using the 50mm 1.4, arguably one of the worst lenses in canon's lineup, for a comparison of detail recovery.

Just speculating, but a 50mm f/1.4 is a lens that every manufacturer has, or possibly it's a 'reference' lens used consistently across many reviews for comparison purposes.
And the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM was Canon's sharpest 50mm prime for a very, very long time. It's no Sigma Art resolution-wise, but it's also no slouch.
