Are prime lenses more weather resistant then zoom lenses?

So I'm leaving for Iceland next week and I'm packing my camera gear right now when I started to wonder which lens would be more weather resistant to snow and rain, my Canon 24mm 1.4 ii or my 24-70 2.8 ii I'm thinking it should be the prime as the zoom extends and snow/rain could get in the barrel.

What do you guys think? sorry if it's a bit of a stupid question.

Logically, the 24L II should be better sealed. However, the 24-70 II is a newer and very robust design. There's really no way to know for sure. I've used my 24-70 II in snow and rain without issue.

Have a great trip!

Its probably easier to seal a prime lens, but zooms that do not extend probably can be sealed just as well. The 70-200mm f/2.8L is going to seal as good as a prime imho. The 24-70 extends, so it is more difficult to seal.

In the end, it depends on the design, and if any attempt was made to seal it, and how much money was spent trying to seal it.

Of course, lenses are not sealed, just weather resistant as you mentioned. Sealing something so that it is actually sealed is extremely difficult. Hermetic sealing works well, but it is difficult. We used ceramic to metal seals for rugged components. They have to be fired at extreme temperatures, and the materials used limit the design. You can fuse glass to metal, but I wonder if the lens would be useful due to the high temps and stresses involved. Epoxy can provide a decent seal and might be best for sealing a lens, but repairs and adjustments would not be practical.

It seems that the 24L may be less prone to be affected by weather factors because it does not extend, however, it will save you from changing lenses if focal lenght change is required.
