Bees, almost bees, wasp, flies...

Can anyone help me identify this weird Loki-looking flying fire ant wasp thing? Location is Mt Timpanogos, Utah.

I have no idea about the size of your wasp but look at Polistes carolina and Polistes rubiginosus. I know noting about the wasps - just using my experience from other fields of taxonomy. I mean: take my suggestions with a (big!) spoon of salt................

I'm not a bee man. I think this is a Common Carder Bumblebee. It landed in front of my RF 100-500mm, so I took it as it looked cute and hard working.

I sent my old Sigma 18-300mm Macro back for a cleaning and calibration. It has been many years and traveled thousands of miles so I thought it should be given a little TLC. For what ever reason I hold onto this lens, most of my friends talk smack about it but it just produces, has great range and is easy to carry all day. Took a couple test shots mounted on the R50
