"...better than nothing" - any kind of photo-exercise is adding to the photo-skills. I have no idea how many shots I have taken in situations that where above my skills/or the abilities of my equipment - for the exercise. And off-course I'm still doing it:) . You break the wall brick by brick...

The only time I find rolling shutter to be a problem is when panning in front of verticals. You wouldn't notice it, however, in a single shot.
I'm more critical but can accept the disadvantages for BIF. Like this one, an unprocessed crop of the finch shows:

For insects I only use mec shutter because of the funny results of the electronic shutter (sorry for the of topic example):
