I had to learn it too and had taken enough photos to do it unambiguously. That's the great thing about bird photography, we can study the photos at leisure. Using binoculars and telescopes you would need a photographic memory to learn afterwards.
I concur with your statement about the utility of photography. When birding, I try to shoot everything I see and sort it out later. I quite often end up amending my eBird list because I get a better identification with the photo than I did in the field.

Bateleur seen while birding in Tanzania, August, 2025.
Not the greatest of photos (shot at extreme distance during the heat of the day), but easily one of the most beautiful eagles.

I got a quite nice shot of one in Tanzania using the EF 400mm f/4 DO ii +2xTC + 5Div. I found that combo very good for BIF. (@Frodo might notice!)
