I concur with your statement about the utility of photography. When birding, I try to shoot everything I see and sort it out later. I quite often end up amending my eBird list because I get a better identification with the photo than I did in the field.I had to learn it too and had taken enough photos to do it unambiguously. That's the great thing about bird photography, we can study the photos at leisure. Using binoculars and telescopes you would need a photographic memory to learn afterwards.
