Canon 100-400 II with Canon 1.4 extender II

I have read numerous places that the 1.4 extender III works great with the new 100-400 II lens. However, does anyone know how the 100-400 II pairs with the 1.4 II? I have the 1.4 II, but not sure if an upgrade to the 1.4 III would be warranted. Has anyone tried this combination of the 100-400 II with the 1.4 II? Thanks.

I have this combination and it seems to work quite well. Admittedly I don't use it very often but in some generic testing, I found that it works MUCH better on the v2 of this 100-400 lens than it did on the non-IS v1 of the 70-200 I used to own. That lens absolutely HATED the 1.4 extender which rather surprised me...

Of course, you do lose the one stop but outdoors it has not proven to be an issue.

I have been using the 400 LIS II for a few years and have been very happy with the results it produces with the 1.4x MKII. However I was a little disappointed with the results of the 1.4X MKII on the 100-400 MKII. Recently I purchased the 1.4xMKIII and it performs much better than the MKII on the new 100-400 and is a very useable combo.
Hi Ron,
could you explain in more detail your findings? I got the mk3 1.4x as a rental a few weeks, and used it on my 100-400mk2 - however after reading other reviews/comparisons regarding the 1.4x mk3 and mk2, I was under the impression that the differences were very minor.
Thanks

Hello Phil,

I have not done any testing in particular. The MKIII seems to me that little bit better in focussing, contrast and sharpness on the 100-400 MKII. I would not use the MKII extender on it for anything other than record shots.

What I find interesting is that the MKII extender works great on my 400 LIS II, but not so on my new 100-400.

Ron
