Rumor has it that there will never be one.

I do not take "never" rumors very seriously.
Canon never planned to make full-frame mirrorless cameras, but now they are the only full-frame cameras that Canon makes.
Never is a long time and you can't ever be proven right.

I fear you are right.
I was holding back upgrading from my R5 to a 5.2 but went ahead last week with no sightings of an R3.2 at the games.
I love my R3, but sometimes I need just a little more meat than 24.
