In this patent application (2024-010559), Canon explores some new designs for macro lenses. With the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, any of the longer focal length designs are unlikely to reach production. There is a 50mm 1:1 Macro that would certainly be useful. 115mm total length is quite large for a 50mm, but it might have no observable focus breathing!
Add IS and nicely rounded aperture blades and I’ll stop talking about a 200-ish mm macro lens for a short while

The 90mm would be nice. But after seeing the new Panasonic 100mm macro, it should not be heavier (300g).

That 50 is indeed interesting ... but not quite as interesting as 180 IS would be. The others are too close to 100. Updated MP-E could compete with the 180, though.

I will not stop talking about an RF 200mm macro lens. The specs on my wishlist haven’t changed (link).

Yet another Canon 50 that is not a 1.4! lol. Slap in the face, that is.

Not sure a 90 or 110 macro really make sense, with the 100mm already out there. But as it was said, most patents do not become products in the end.

Haven't there been a L and a non-L 100mm macro? These lenses are just f/4 so maybe a cheaper macro?

I used the EF 100mm non-L for over a decade, great lens! I sold it for the same price I bought it for, inflation worked for me, for once

I use the mp-e and ef50 f/2.5 when I can’t fit the camera+lens in the space, for example insects on the ground in between shrubs. The EF-S60 in APS-C is great as well, much smaller and lighter than a 100mm.
I agree with you that for most insects a looooong macro is more useful, but there is value in having a working distance the size of your hand, so you can rest your hand on the surface and the lens on your hand. I use that when the solitary bees start emerging again.

Larger subjects, typically. The challenge is that with wider macro lenses, the working distance is very short. For example, this shot with the EF-M 28mm Macro was at 1.2:1 (the lens has a 'super-macro' mode):


The working distance for that magnification is 0.5" / 13mm...

You'll get a different sense of perspective and depth of field the same way changing focal lengths of larger objects but keeping the same framing gives a new look.

Maybe 2.8 200 IS 1:1 with good 1:1 quality from f/4 onwards - f/2.8 isn\'t necessary to be optimized for absolute quality to keep the system compact and light (moderately).
Would work well for me on APS C (300ish) and FF! Maybe compatible with teleconverters or a specialized teleconverter?!

I've really become interested in this lens since you started posting images from it. It's a good price and the only thing stopping me is I don't know about the sharpness in the corners and sides. If possible, could you post a shot with a chart or something grid like?

I hope to be proven wrong, but I think with the 24, 35 and 85mm half macros, a 50mm full macro is unlikely from Canon.
