Canon RF 300-600mm Update…. Again

Looooove that photo of the Mallard (y)

Was sitting on the beach one day and there was these gulls beside us. Suddenly a couple of them got in a fight and I quickly grabbed the camera and started shooting (I had the 100-500mm on at the time). I didn't have a clue what I was shooting but just pointed in the direction and amazingly some of the photos came ok.

Hmmm... Me thinks the adult is just feeding very young kid. Or that's just nasty kid...

The photo may give the impression they're on the sand but they were actually off the ground and going at it for nearly 1 minute.
I saw that. The Gulls are feeding their young by regurgitating. And it's not always without some temper.
Never mind, what I was trying to say is that there is no fight on that beach: it's not like this topic in CR ;)! Ironically today I succeeded to take some photos of the Common Mynas fights - posted already in the "Birds portraits" - similarities are not intentional :)!

It appears that this lens is not happening any time soon, if at all. I'm wondering why those who are waiting on this lens are not buying the Canon EF 200-400 f4L IS 1.4x. It's a superb lens and prices for used lenses are a fraction of what it originally sold for (so much for "big whites" holding their value).

Canon is very tight lipped on potential new lenses. I would not hold my breath on either the 300-600 mm or new 400/600 mm big white lenses.

It is odd that Canon spent significant resources developing and producing lenses with diffractive optics and built-in TCs, but have not released any RF lenses with either technology since the RF mount was announced in September 2018.

Honestly, I like what Sony has done with their 300 mm f2.8 and recently announced 100-400 mm f4.5 lenses and Nikon's push into built-in TCs and diffractive optics is also encouraging.

Both the 800 f/11 and 600 f/11 use DO.

It's not about getting one; it's all about consuming rumors - the fun part of this all. EF 200-400 is a great lens, but the weight equals two lenses. People are probably hoping to see 300-600mm in a totally different weight class. Even if it were just an RF 100-300mm with a fixed 2x extender (great lens, I have it), the weight would be significantly less than the EF 200-400mm.

I don't think anyone (else) ever expected any lens to hold the value of a new lens bought from a store. But if you bought a used EF 600mm III or EF 500mm II many years ago, you can probably sell it today for a similar amount of money you paid for it. Especially if sold to a private buyer and not a store trying to make a profit.
